PS5 Emulation vs. PS5 Remote Play: Which Is Better for Playing on a PC?

For most PS5 owners, PS Remote Play is the better way to play on a PC screen. It is Sony’s documented Windows workflow: your PS5 runs the game and sends the video and audio to the computer while your controller inputs travel back to the console. Setup is defined, supported games are identified by Sony, and the main variable is the quality of the connection between the console and PC.

PS5 emulation is a very different proposition. Projects such as KytyPS5 are experimental, can boot some 2D titles and a selection of 3D games, and remain limited by crashes, graphical errors and poor performance. An emulator may be interesting for development or testing, but a game reaching a menu is not evidence that it will run reliably from start to finish.

What the two options actually do

PS Remote Play streams a PS5 you already own

Remote Play does not turn a computer into a standalone PlayStation 5. The game executes on your physical console. The PS Remote Play application receives the rendered picture and sound, displays them in a window on the PC, and sends controller commands back over the network.

Sony requires a PS5 console and a PlayStation account. The console must be connected to broadband, and the computer must run the PS Remote Play application. You can therefore use a laptop or desktop as a display and input device without moving the console, but the console remains the hardware doing all game processing.

  • PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.

PS5 emulation attempts to run console software locally

An emulator reproduces enough of a console’s operating environment for game software to execute on PC hardware. KytyPS5 is an open-source project for Windows and Linux with experimental macOS support. Its project description says it can boot 2D games and some 3D games, while also warning that development is early and compatibility is limited.

That distinction matters when reading compatibility reports. “Boots” can mean only that a title reaches a logo, menu or first scene. It does not establish that graphics render correctly, that sound works, that saves function, or that the game remains playable through a complete campaign.

PS5 emulation vs. Remote Play at a glance

Factor PS Remote Play PS5 emulation
Where the game runs Your PS5; the PC receives a live stream. The emulator attempts to execute PS5 software on PC hardware.
PS5 ownership Required under Sony’s Remote Play guidance. Not identified as a requirement by KytyPS5’s project description; you still need legally obtained game files and system software.
Compatibility Works with compatible PS5 games. Titles that require PlayStation VR or other additional peripherals are excluded from Remote Play. Limited and dependent on the individual game, emulator build and PC. The project warns of crashes, graphical glitches and poor performance.
Network dependence Requires a broadband path between the PS5 and PC. Sony recommends at least 5 Mbps upload and download, and 15 Mbps in each direction for best performance. The game is not streamed from your PS5. Local PC hardware, drivers and emulator compatibility determine the result.
Setup character A documented application, account sign-in, console setting and controller connection. Experimental software whose builds and supported titles change over time.
Best fit Someone who owns a PS5 and wants dependable access from a computer display. A technically curious user interested in emulator development or testing a particular title.

Can you play PS5 games on a PC without owning a PS5?

Remote Play cannot satisfy that requirement. It is a streaming feature for a console you own and have configured; the PC has no game to receive when there is no PS5 online.

Emulation is not currently a dependable general replacement. KytyPS5’s own status description reports limited compatibility and instability rather than a broad, finished PS5 library. If you do not own a console, choosing emulation means accepting that a specific game may not boot, may display incorrectly or may stop working after an update. The project also states that it does not distribute games or copyrighted system software, so obtaining those files is the user’s responsibility and must be lawful in the applicable jurisdiction.

Remote Play requirements on a Windows PC

Sony lists the following minimum PC requirements for its Windows Remote Play application:

  • A gaming icon in your hands - Enjoy a comfortable, evolved design with an iconic layout and enhanced sticks. Hear higher-fidelity** sound effects through the built-in speaker in supported games
  • Multi-device connectivity - Connect using a USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth technology and easily play on more devices including Windows PC and Mac computers.
  • Elevate PC gaming with advanced features like haptic feedback and adaptive triggers in a range of blockbuster PC titles.
  • Windows 10 64-bit or Windows 11.
  • A seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later.
  • At least 2 GB of RAM.
  • At least 100 MB of available storage.
  • A display resolution of 1024 × 768 or higher.
  • A sound card.
  • An available USB port.

Sony lists DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 controllers as compatible. Its Windows instructions call for connecting the controller to the PC with a USB cable. A controller is optional only if your intended setup provides another supported input method; the documented path is a compatible PlayStation controller over USB.

Internet speed and what the numbers mean

Sony’s baseline recommendation is at least 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download. For best performance, Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps upload and 15 Mbps download. These figures are recommendations, not a latency or quality guarantee: Wi-Fi interference, congestion, packet loss and the route between the console and PC can still cause delay or a degraded picture.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Upload capacity matters because the console must send the game stream. Download capacity matters because the PC receives it. When the console and PC are on the same home network, your internet service may not carry every packet between them, but the local network still needs sufficient capacity and stability.

How to set up PS Remote Play

1. Prepare the console

  1. Turn on the PS5 and sign in with the PlayStation account you intend to use on the PC.
  2. Open Settings, go to System, then open Remote Play.
  3. Enable Enable Remote Play.
  4. If you want to start the console remotely, open the PS5 power-saving settings and enable the options that keep it connected to the internet in rest mode and allow it to be turned on from the network.

The rest-mode options are only needed for wake-on-network use. If you always turn the PS5 on manually, you can leave that convenience feature unused.

2. Install and sign in on Windows

  1. Install Sony’s PS Remote Play application for Windows.
  2. Launch the application and sign in with the same PlayStation account used on the PS5.
  3. Select PS5 when the application asks which console you want to connect.
  4. Connect a DualSense, DualSense Edge or DUALSHOCK 4 controller to the PC with a USB cable when prompted.

The application searches for the configured console. If it cannot find the PS5, confirm that the console is powered on or correctly prepared for rest-mode wake-up, that both devices are online, and that the same account is being used.

3. Test before changing image quality

Start with the default application settings and play for several minutes in the same room and network conditions you expect to use regularly. Check controller response, audio, image stability and whether the console remains connected when the display changes. A short test identifies network or account problems before you spend time tuning resolution or moving hardware.

Improving a Remote Play connection

Prefer a stable local path

When practical, connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet. A wired connection removes one Wi-Fi hop and usually makes congestion easier to diagnose. If the PC is also wired, the stream has a more predictable path. If the computer must use Wi-Fi, place it near the access point, use a clear band and avoid saturating the network with downloads or video uploads while playing.

Interpret symptoms instead of guessing

  • Blocky or soft video: the stream is reducing image quality to remain connected. Check congestion and signal strength before assuming the PC is underpowered.
  • Buttons feel late: round-trip network delay is affecting input. Test with both devices wired or on a less congested wireless network.
  • Frequent disconnects: verify the console’s connection, the PC’s connection and whether the router is changing bands or renewing its link.
  • The console is not found: confirm the account match, Remote Play enablement and rest-mode network settings if you are trying to wake it remotely.
  • No controller response: reconnect the supported controller by USB and check that Windows detects it before launching the session.

Sony’s 15 Mbps recommendation describes throughput, not a promised frame rate or input latency. There is no universal delay figure in the cited guidance, so the only reliable way to judge a particular home is to test it under normal use.

Game compatibility and controller limits

Remote Play supports compatible PS5 games rather than every experience available on the console. Sony specifically excludes games that require PlayStation VR or other additional peripherals. A title can therefore be installed and playable on the PS5 while still being unsuitable for a Remote Play session.

Controller compatibility is similarly practical rather than theoretical. Sony names DualSense, DualSense Edge and DUALSHOCK 4 for Windows and directs users to USB connection. If a game depends on a peripheral that is not available through the PC session, Remote Play will not remove that requirement.

What PS5 emulation can realistically do today

Compatibility is title-specific

KytyPS5’s reported ability to boot 2D games and a selection of 3D games should be read as a project status statement, not a library-wide compatibility rating. Results can differ between games and between emulator builds. A patch that improves one title can leave another unaffected or introduce a new regression.

Expect visible and functional failures

The project warns about crashes, graphical glitches and poor performance. Those problems can appear independently: a game may render a scene but crash when loading the next one; it may reach gameplay with missing effects; or it may run so slowly that input is unusable. Audio, shader compilation, save behavior and online features can also require separate implementation work, and the cited project information does not establish reliable support for them.

PC specifications are not a simple pass/fail test

Unlike Remote Play, which shifts game processing to the console, emulation asks the PC to reproduce console behavior locally. A faster processor or graphics card may help, but hardware alone cannot fix an emulator feature that a game requires. Because no controlled latency measurements, benchmark results or independent compatibility percentages are established here, do not infer that a particular PC will deliver console-like performance.

A cautious workflow for trying emulation

  1. Identify the exact game and the emulator build you plan to use. Check the project’s current compatibility information rather than relying on an old video or forum post.
  2. Obtain game files and any required system software through lawful means. KytyPS5 does not distribute copyrighted games or system software.
  3. Read the project’s installation notes for your operating system. Windows and Linux are identified platforms; macOS support is described as experimental.
  4. Back up configuration files and saves before testing new builds. Experimental software can change settings or fail during a session.
  5. Test one title at a time. Record whether it boots, reaches gameplay, renders correctly, accepts input, saves and survives a longer session.
  6. When a game fails, compare the result with the project’s issue and compatibility information before changing several variables at once. That makes it possible to tell an emulator limitation from a local configuration problem.

Do not treat a successful boot report as a promise of a complete playthrough. The project’s own warnings make experimentation the appropriate expectation.

Which option is better for different readers?

You own a PS5 and want to play from a laptop

Choose Remote Play. It is the supported workflow, requires no duplicate local emulation layer, and lets the console handle the game exactly as it normally would. Your decisions are mainly network placement, controller connection and whether the particular game is compatible.

  • Play on more devices using the USB Type-C cable or Bluetooth to connect easily to Windows PC and Mac computers, Android and iOS mobile phones as well as your PlayStation 5

You want to play in another room or use a small PC display

Remote Play is designed for this use. Enable the console settings, sign in with the matching account and test the network path from the destination room. If the connection is unstable, improve the local network before changing game settings.

You are evaluating emulator development

KytyPS5 can be relevant as an experimental software project. Focus on the specific title and build, read current compatibility notes and expect debugging rather than a finished console replacement. The value is in testing and learning, not guaranteed access to a broad library.

You do not own a PS5 but want a dependable PC library

Neither option delivers that outcome today. Remote Play has no console to stream, while the cited emulator project reports limited, unstable compatibility. Selecting emulation means accepting that the game you want may not be playable even after setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Ownership, accounts and practical trade-offs

Remote Play’s major prerequisite is a PS5, a PlayStation account and a network capable of carrying the session. Once those are in place, the PC requirements are modest: Sony lists 2 GB of RAM, 100 MB of storage and a seventh-generation Intel Core processor or later. The trade-off is dependence on the console being available and on the network remaining stable.

Emulation removes the need to stream from the console during play, but it replaces that dependency with experimental software maintenance. You may need to change builds, investigate title-specific issues and accept that an update can alter behavior. The project’s limited status means there is no equivalent to Sony’s documented minimum specification that guarantees a playable result.

How to make the decision

  1. Confirm console ownership. If you do not have a PS5, cross Remote Play off the list immediately.
  2. Define your tolerance for troubleshooting. A straightforward session favors Remote Play; debugging and compatibility testing point toward emulation.
  3. Check the game’s requirements. Remote Play excludes VR and other peripheral-dependent experiences. Emulation requires a title-specific compatibility check.
  4. Assess the network. Use Sony’s 5 Mbps baseline and 15 Mbps best-performance recommendation as throughput targets, then test the actual route and latency in your home.
  5. Choose the failure mode you prefer. Remote Play usually fails through connection quality or account setup. Emulation can fail through the emulator, game compatibility, graphics, performance or changing builds.

For a PS5 owner who simply wants the games on a PC display, those criteria point to Remote Play. Emulation makes sense only when experimentation itself is the goal or when you are prepared to verify a particular title and tolerate an incomplete result.
