There is no universal long-term winner. In the United States, the PS5 Digital Edition costs less at purchase, while the disc model charges a premium for access to existing discs, used games, retail discounts and resale. The cheaper choice depends on your country, the games you already own, where you buy future games and whether you sell them afterward.
The short answer: compare your game library, not just the console price
A Digital Edition is the lower-cost starting point, but its saving is fixed and immediate: you pay less for the hardware and then obtain games digitally. A disc-equipped PS5 costs more initially, yet it can use PS5 and PS4 game discs, second-hand copies, retail promotions and discs you already own. Those options may reduce software spending, but the drive does not guarantee that every physical copy is cheaper than a digital purchase.

The right calculation is personal. Add the console price premium to the price of every game you expect to buy, include taxes and delivery, subtract any money you realistically recover by selling or trading physical copies, and compare the totals over the period you expect to keep the console. A buyer who never purchases discs cannot recover the disc model’s premium. Someone with a shelf of PS4 discs may value the drive before buying a single new game.
Prices, bundles, promotions, local taxes, exchange rates, used-game supply and digital discounts change by country and date. The figures below establish a United States baseline only; use current prices in your own market for a purchase decision.

Sony Interactive Entertainment announced the $50 recommended-price difference for the United States on March 27, 2026, with the prices taking effect April 2. The same announcement listed other territories, so do not convert the US amounts directly into a local comparison. The catalog check also shows that storage differs between the listed configurations: 1 TB for the disc model and 825 GB for the Digital Edition. A bundle with a different game, storage tier or accessory is not an equivalent comparison.
What the disc model lets you do
Use games you already own
The standard console can read PS5 and PS4 Blu-ray game discs. If your PS4 collection is physical, the drive is what makes those purchases usable on the new console. Sony says more than 99 percent of the 4,000-plus PS4 games are playable on PS5. That statistic describes compatibility, not a monetary saving, and individual titles can still have edition, region or upgrade requirements.
Disc ownership also matters for games borrowed from family, purchased from a local shop or bought second-hand. You normally need the disc inserted when launching a disc-based game, even if the console installs game data to its internal storage. A disc is therefore an access key as well as a physical package; it is not equivalent to a digital license that follows your account.

Shop across more than one sales channel
Physical games can be discounted by retailers, cleared out after launch, sold used or traded in. Those opportunities are optional rather than guaranteed. A new disc can cost more than a digital sale, while a heavily discounted digital version can undercut every local retailer. Compare the same edition and included downloadable content, and include shipping, sales tax and any travel or marketplace fees.
Resell or trade copies
When you sell a physical game, the relevant number is your net proceeds after platform fees, postage, transportation and the value of your time. If you keep every game, resale contributes nothing to the calculation. If you routinely finish a game and sell it, record the actual amounts you receive instead of assuming a standard resale percentage; no typical resale value is established for this comparison.
What the Digital Edition changes
Lower initial outlay and a simpler library
The Digital Edition removes the optical drive and is intended for games downloaded from PlayStation Store or accessed through digital services. It can be a sensible fit when your existing library is digital, you buy during online sales, or you prefer not to change discs. The lower purchase price is certain at checkout, whereas future digital discounts are variable.
Disc games do not work without disc capability
A Digital Edition cannot read a PS4 or PS5 game disc in its original configuration. Eligible digital purchases are available through the account that owns them, but a physical copy does not become a digital license merely because the game is also sold online.

Sony sells a separate Disc Drive for compatible slim Digital Edition consoles and PS5 Pro consoles. The product information confirms the compatibility, but the drive’s current price and stock must be checked at the time of purchase. Include the complete cost of the console plus drive, including tax and any required shipping, when comparing that route with buying the disc model from the outset. Confirm your console’s model number before ordering; compatibility is not a promise that every older Digital Edition accepts the accessory.

A break-even method you can calculate with your own games
Use one country, one currency and one purchase date for both consoles. Then compare the same game list and ownership period. A spreadsheet makes the assumptions visible and prevents a few unusually cheap or expensive purchases from deciding the result.
- Set the hardware baseline. Record the disc console price and the Digital Edition price for the same generation, storage tier, bundle contents and retailer. Add tax and delivery. If you plan to add a drive later, record its current price as a separate hardware cost rather than treating it as free.
- List your existing physical games. Mark every PS4 disc you intend to keep using and every PS5 disc already on your shelf. Give each one a value based on the digital replacement price you would otherwise pay, but do not count a game you would not actually play again.
- Build a future game basket. List the titles you realistically expect to buy during your ownership period. For each title, record the lowest comparable physical price, the lowest comparable digital price, tax, shipping and whether the copy includes the same edition, expansions and language options.
- Record your buying pattern. Separate new retail discs, used discs, digital sales, subscriptions and free-to-play games. A subscription catalogue is access rather than permanent ownership, so do not treat a month of access as the same product as a purchased license.
- Estimate resale conservatively. Enter the amount you expect to receive after fees and delivery, using your own past transactions where possible. Set this value to zero if you rarely sell games.
- Calculate each total. For the disc route, add the disc console cost and all physical or digital game costs, then subtract net resale proceeds. For the Digital Edition route, add its console cost, any later drive cost, all digital game costs and any resale value (usually zero for digital purchases).
- Run more than one scenario. Make a cautious case using ordinary digital sales and no resale, an optimistic physical case using discounts and regular trade-ins, and a library case that includes your existing discs. The result is a range, not a universal number of games or years to break even.
In compact form:
Disc total = disc-console cost + game purchases − net physical resale
Digital total = Digital-console cost + optional drive cost + game purchases

The disc option is cheaper when the additional value of usable discs, lower physical prices and resale exceeds its hardware premium. The Digital Edition is cheaper when those benefits do not outweigh the lower starting price.
Decision factors that can change the result
Your existing PS4 collection
Existing discs are the clearest reason to choose the drive model. Rebuying a large physical library digitally would create a cost that the Digital Edition’s lower console price may not offset. Count only games you still want to play and verify whether a title’s PS5 version or upgrade has special conditions.
How often you buy games
Someone who buys one or two games over several years has fewer opportunities for physical discounts or resale to recover the premium. A frequent buyer has more chances to compare stores, purchase used copies and sell finished games, but also has more exposure to periods when digital sales are cheaper.
Whether you keep games permanently
Choose the ownership model you actually use. A disc can be lent, resold or retained independently of an online account, while a digital purchase is tied to account access and store policies. If you never lend or sell games, those physical advantages have little financial value.

Digital discounts vary by title, season and region. Subscription catalogues can reduce the number of games you purchase, changing the importance of a disc drive. Do not assume that a game will remain in a catalogue or that a subscription includes the same edition as a discounted retail copy.

Storage and downloads
The October 13, 2026 US catalog listed 1 TB for the disc model and 825 GB for the Digital Edition. Installed games occupy storage regardless of whether the license began on a disc, but an all-digital buyer may download more often and should consider internet data limits, download time and the price of additional storage. Storage capacity is a practical difference in those listed configurations, not evidence that one format has a lower lifetime game cost.

On July 1, 2026, Sony announced that production of physical discs for all new games releasing on PlayStation consoles will be discontinued starting in January 2028. The announcement says new games will be available in digital formats through PlayStation Store and retailers. This narrows the assumption that every future release will have a retail disc.
It does not say that existing discs stop working, that previously purchased games become unusable, or that every game available before January 2028 will disappear from stores. A disc model can still provide value for your current PS4 and PS5 collection, used-market purchases and any physical releases available before the change. For a console you expect to keep well beyond 2028, assign less value to the possibility of buying every future title on disc and more value to the library you already own and the releases you expect before that date.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
- Comparing unlike bundles: A console bundled with a game or extra controller is not directly comparable with a bare console. Remove the value of included items or compare equivalent bundles.
- Using a sale price as a permanent price: Record the date and duration of a promotion. A one-week discount should not represent the price you expect for every future purchase.
- Ignoring local costs: Add VAT or sales tax, delivery, import charges and marketplace fees. The US figures cannot be assumed for another country.
- Counting resale money twice: Subtract proceeds only once, after fees. A game you trade in is no longer available in your library unless you buy it again.
- Assuming every disc is cheaper: Compare identical editions and current digital promotions. Physical pricing varies by retailer and inventory.
- Forgetting the add-on drive cost: A Digital Edition plus drive is a different package from the original Digital Edition. Verify the accessory price and stock when you make the comparison.
- Treating compatibility as a guarantee of upgrades: More than 99 percent of PS4 games are playable on PS5, but compatibility does not promise a free PS5 upgrade, identical performance or access to every add-on.
- Buying storage based only on format: The listed models have different capacities. Include the cost and inconvenience of future storage expansion if your library is large.
Who should choose each model?
Choose the disc model when
- You already own PS4 or PS5 discs you want to keep using.
- You regularly buy used or discounted retail games.
- You lend games, trade them in or resell them after finishing.
- You want Blu-ray or DVD playback from the console.
- You prefer the option to buy physical copies even if you mostly buy digitally.
Choose the Digital Edition when
- Your current library is entirely digital or you are starting fresh.
- You buy mainly during PlayStation Store sales or through digital subscriptions.
- You rarely lend, trade or resell games.
- You value the lower initial price more than access to physical-media bargains.
- You accept that a compatible drive, if purchased later, is an additional cost with price and stock that can change.
Consider a Digital Edition plus drive only after checking the numbers
This route can spread the purchase over time, but it is not automatically a bargain. Add the console and drive prices, confirm compatibility with the slim model, and compare the combined amount with the disc console’s current price. A later purchase may make sense if you are certain you need discs only occasionally; it is less attractive if the combined price approaches or exceeds the disc model while offering no other benefit.
What Sony’s price announcement means for your calculation
In its March 27, 2026 announcement, Isabelle Tomatis, Sony Interactive Entertainment’s vice president of global marketing, said: “With continued pressures in the global economic landscape, we’ve made the decision to increase the prices of PS5, PS5 Pro, and PlayStation Portal globally.” That statement explains why a price checked in an older article may not match the April 2026 US recommended prices or a later retailer listing. Treat every price as dated information and recheck it before ordering.
A practical worksheet
| Input | Disc route | Digital route |
|---|---|---|
| Console and tax | Enter the current equivalent disc-model total | Enter the current equivalent Digital Edition total |
| Optional drive | Usually none; verify bundle contents | Add only if you plan to buy the compatible accessory |
| Existing discs | Count the games you will actually use | Enter the cost of digital replacements only where you would really rebuy them |
| Future purchases | Record physical, used and digital prices for the same editions | Record digital prices, sales and subscription access |
| Resale or trade | Subtract net proceeds you realistically receive | Normally enter zero for digital licenses |
| Ownership period | Use the same years and same game list for both totals | |
Keep receipts or screenshots for unusually low prices and mark whether each figure is a promotion, a recurring price or a one-time bundle. Recalculate if your preferred retailer changes its policy, if a game leaves a subscription catalogue or if you decide to sell games instead of keeping them.
Bottom line
The Digital Edition is cheaper to buy, but the disc model can be cheaper for a player who uses existing discs, consistently finds lower physical prices or recovers money through resale. Sony’s announced move away from producing discs for new releases from January 2028 makes future physical availability less certain, not current discs worthless. Use your local prices, your actual library and a complete game basket; no sourced figure establishes an average lifetime saving or a guaranteed break-even number of games.
