Short answer: Sony’s detachable PS5 Disc Drive (CFI-ZDD1 series) works with PS5 consoles in the CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 model groups. Which PS5 consoles can use the detachable disc drive?
Compatibility is determined by the console’s model group, not simply by whether its name includes “Digital Edition.” Sony identifies the accessory as the CFI-ZDD1 series and supports it on the CFI-2000 Digital Edition and CFI-7000 group consoles. The drive is a separately purchased accessory rather than a feature included with every digital PS5.

Before ordering, read the model number printed on your console and confirm that it belongs to the CFI-2000 or CFI-7000 group. Do not infer compatibility from the console’s color, storage capacity, bundle name, or the fact that it is a “slim” or digital model. The model-group designation is the check that matters.

What you are buying—and what you are not
The drive is an add-on
The CFI-ZDD1 series is sold separately. A compatible digital console does not automatically include the hardware, so compare the contents of the console package with the accessory listing before placing an order. Retail price, inventory, seller and return terms can change; check those details with the retailer at the time of purchase.
The drive does not make every digital PS5 compatible
The CFI-1000 Digital Edition is expressly excluded from disc-based games and media by Sony. Buying the detachable accessory for that model group will not add disc capability. If your console is CFI-1000, the relevant decision is whether to keep using downloads or choose a different console model, not which detachable drive to install.
Keep the original console parts
Installation involves removing a cover and the short horizontal stand feet. Sony says to keep those pieces because they are needed if you later use the console without the drive attached. Put them in the drive’s packaging or another labeled location rather than discarding them.

Sony’s media support information lists the detachable-drive-compatible PS5 groups as able to use the following optical formats:
- Ultra HD Blu-ray
- Blu-ray
- DVD
- Sony’s specified recordable disc formats listed on its media-support page
The list applies to the formats Sony publishes; it is not a guarantee that every disc type, recording method or regional variation will work. Check the format and region information on the packaging and consult Sony’s current support list before relying on an unusual or recordable disc.
The same compatibility boundary applies to games and media: CFI-2000 and CFI-7000 consoles can use the supported drive, while Sony says the CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media.

Buying checklist before you order
- Read the console model number. Confirm the model group is CFI-2000 or CFI-7000.
- Reject a CFI-1000 Digital Edition match. Sony does not support disc-based games or media on that group.
- Confirm the accessory identity. Look for Sony’s CFI-ZDD1 series designation rather than assuming that any optical drive is compatible.
- Confirm the package contents. The drive is sold separately; do not assume it is included with a digital-console bundle.
- Plan for an internet connection. The console and drive must be paired online during setup.
- Check the retailer’s live terms. Verify the current price, availability, seller and return policy immediately before purchase.
- Reserve a safe installation space. You will need a flat surface, a soft cloth and enough room to remove the cover and stand feet without scratching the console.
If you cannot connect the console to the internet at setup time, postpone installation until you can. Pairing is a setup requirement, not an optional step to skip.
How to install the PS5 disc drive
Use Sony’s illustrated instructions for the exact cover shape, clip positions and orientation. The sequence below follows Sony’s required preparation and installation order while leaving the visual alignment details to the official diagrams.
1. Shut the PS5 down completely
Turn the console off rather than leaving it in Rest Mode. Wait until it has finished shutting down before moving it.
2. Disconnect power and every other cable
Remove the AC power cord and disconnect the remaining cables from the console. A fully disconnected console is easier to handle and avoids pulling on attached cables while the cover is removed.

3. Let the console cool
Allow the PS5 to cool before opening the exterior. Do not begin the cover-removal step immediately after a long gaming session.
4. Prepare a protected, level work surface
Place a soft cloth on a flat surface and set the console on it. The cloth protects the exterior while you turn the console and work around the cover and feet.
5. Remove the short horizontal stand feet and the specified cover
Follow the orientation shown in Sony’s guide. Remove only the short horizontal stand feet and the cover identified in the instructions; do not improvise by forcing another panel or using a text-only description to guess the release points.

6. Attach the drive and reinstall the cover
Seat the CFI-ZDD1 drive as shown in the diagrams, then fit the replacement cover. Pay attention to the illustrated clip and edge alignment. If a part does not settle into place with the expected movement, stop and recheck the orientation instead of applying force.

Once the drive and cover are properly seated, reconnect the AC power cord and the other cables, then start the console.
8. Complete online pairing
Connect the PS5 to the internet and follow the on-screen setup prompts. Sony states: “Internet connection required to pair disc drive and PS5 console upon set up.” The connection is needed to pair the drive with that console during the initial setup.
9. Store the removed parts
Keep the removed cover and stand feet. Sony says they are required to use the console without the drive attached in the future.
Why the internet connection matters
The internet requirement is specifically tied to pairing the drive and console during setup. A compatible model and a correctly installed drive are not enough to finish the first-time configuration if the PS5 cannot reach the internet.
- Arrange internet access before opening the console.
- After reconnecting the cables, allow the PS5 to complete its normal startup before beginning pairing.
- If setup reports that pairing cannot be completed, verify that the console is online and retry the pairing process shown on screen.
- Do not treat the drive as permanently paired simply because it fits physically; complete the online setup.

What to check after installation
Confirm that the hardware is seated
Inspect the cover and drive edges before using a disc. The cover should follow the console’s intended contours, and the drive should be seated according to the official illustrations. A gap, lifted edge or cover that will not clip into place is a reason to power down and repeat the installation rather than continue.

Test the type of disc you actually intend to use
If your purpose is physical games, test a supported game disc. If you bought the drive for films or music, use a format from Sony’s published support list. Testing the format that matters to you is more informative than assuming that one successful disc proves compatibility with every disc type.
Keep the model and accessory information together
Save the console model number and the CFI-ZDD1 documentation with the retained cover and stand feet. This makes a future reinstallation or return easier and prevents confusion if the household has more than one PS5 model.
Troubleshooting by symptom
The console is CFI-1000 Digital Edition
This is a compatibility limitation, not an installation error. Sony says the CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc-based games or media, so the detachable CFI-ZDD1 drive is not an upgrade path for that model group.
The model number is unclear
Do not order until you can read the model number and match its group to CFI-2000 or CFI-7000. Product names and retailer descriptions can cover multiple generations; the console’s model designation is the safer check.
The drive will not pair
Confirm that the console is connected to the internet, because Sony requires an internet connection to pair the drive and console during setup. Also confirm that the console belongs to a supported model group and that the drive is seated as shown in the official diagrams.
The cover or clips do not align
Power the PS5 off, unplug it and let it cool before trying again. Return to the illustrated cover-removal and drive-installation steps, checking the console’s orientation and the clip alignment. Do not force a panel into position.

Sony says those pieces are needed to use the console without the drive attached. If they were discarded or misplaced, retain the drive installation rather than removing it until you have determined how to obtain the correct replacement parts.

- Do you have a flat, cloth-covered surface and time to install the drive with the console unplugged and cool?
- Will you retain the removed cover and short stand feet?
- Does the disc format you need appear on Sony’s supported list?
Answering these questions prevents the two most expensive mistakes: buying a drive for the unsupported CFI-1000 Digital Edition, or opening a compatible console without the internet access and retained parts needed to complete setup properly.
