It can play compatible PS4 and PS5 discs, download digital games, and leave you free to choose physical, used or digital editions later. A PS5 Digital Edition is the better fit when you are comfortable buying everything through PlayStation Store and do not need disc games or disc-based media.
That is a conditional recommendation, not a claim that one format always costs less. Your existing collection, household-sharing setup, handling preferences, local prices and exact console model matter more than a blanket “digital versus physical” rule.

Digital purchases
A digital game is licensed to the PlayStation account that bought it. After signing in, you find it in that account’s game library and can download it to a PS5. The console still installs the game to internal storage, and updates or additional content may require downloads. If you move to another PS5, signing in to the purchasing account makes eligible purchases available again, subject to Sony’s account and license rules.

Digital ownership is therefore account-based rather than a transferable object. Do not treat a digital purchase as something you can freely lend, sell or hand to another account.
Disc games
A disc is a physical key and installation source, not a complete replacement for the console’s storage. Sony’s disc-installation instructions explain that a game installs to console storage the first time you play it, and the disc must remain inserted each time you start that game. Read the exact requirements in Sony’s disc-game installation guide.
That means a disc-drive PS5 does not let you avoid storage management. You still install the game, download patches when required and keep enough free space. The physical advantage is that access is represented by the disc: a different user can play when the disc is available, without the original buyer’s account being the only route to launch.
Compatibility with an existing PS4 or PS5 collection
If you already own PS4 discs, the choice is straightforward: you need a disc-drive PS5 to use them. A Digital Edition without an add-on drive cannot read those discs. The same applies to compatible PS5 disc editions. A disc-drive model also runs digital games, so buying the drive-equipped console does not lock you into physical purchases.
Sony’s current ecosystem page says there are “more than 4,000 games ready to play on both PS4 and PS5.” That is a catalog statement covering both generations, not a count of PS5-native titles. Check an individual game’s compatibility and edition before assuming a particular disc will work; region, publisher support and special peripherals can affect the experience.

Sony’s launch-era 2020 FAQ described compatibility as “more than 99% of the 4,000+ PS4 games.” That figure belongs to the original launch announcement, not a newly verified 2026 test. The historical FAQ is available at PlayStation’s PS5: The Ultimate FAQ.
How discs and digital games behave day to day
Starting a disc game
- Insert the game disc into the drive-equipped PS5.
- Allow the console to install the game to internal storage.
- Install any required update and downloadable content.
- Leave the disc inserted whenever you play; the console checks it as your license.
Removing the disc after installation does not turn the game into a digital purchase. You must insert it again for the next session. Sony also documents supported disc and USB media at Disc and USB media support.

Starting a digital game
- Sign in to the account that bought the game, or use a PS5 enabled for that account’s Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Open Game Library, select the purchase and download it.
- Install updates and any required game data.
- Launch without swapping media; account, license and console access remain the controlling conditions.
Both routes use console storage and can require online downloads. A disc is not guaranteed to contain every patch, online service or post-launch feature, so physical ownership should not be described as a complete offline backup.
Sharing games in a household
Sony’s Console Sharing and Offline Play setting lets other users on one enabled PS5 play games purchased and downloaded by the account owner, including while that PS5 is offline. The account can enable the feature on only one PS5 at a time.
This is useful for a family console: the purchaser downloads the game, enables Console Sharing and Offline Play on that PS5, and other local profiles can play the installed title. It does not mean digital games can be freely transferred between accounts or resold. If you change the enabled console, the sharing benefit moves according to Sony’s account rules.

Physical sharing works differently. Anyone using the console can launch a disc game while the disc is inserted, but the disc cannot be in two consoles at once. A disc-drive PS5 therefore offers a choice between account-based sharing for digital purchases and possession-based access for discs.
Convenience, storage and handling
Why digital can feel simpler
- No disc swapping when moving between installed games.
- No shelf space, damaged labels or misplaced cases.
- Games can be bought and downloaded without visiting a shop.
- The entire digital library appears under the purchasing account.
Those are practical consequences of the access model, not measured claims about loading speed or performance. Installation, updates and storage use still apply.
Why physical can be preferable
- You can keep a tangible edition and choose boxed releases.
- Physical retail may include new and used listings, depending on your market.
- You can lend a disc to someone who has a compatible drive, subject to the game’s rules and the need to get the disc back to play.
- A drive-equipped console preserves the option to buy either format later.
Used-game access and resale are potential benefits, not guaranteed savings or guaranteed resale value. Prices, stock and regional editions change, so compare the exact game and edition at the time of purchase.
Price: compare the exact edition, not the format label
No universal lifetime-cost advantage has been established for digital or physical games. Digital storefront prices, physical retail discounts, used listings, bundles, deluxe editions and temporary promotions all vary by title, region and date. A disc-drive console may open more purchasing channels, but that does not guarantee that every disc is cheaper than its digital equivalent.
Before buying, compare:
- The standard, deluxe and complete editions of the same game.
- Current PlayStation Store pricing in your account’s region.
- New and used physical prices, including shipping or local taxes.
- Whether a disc edition requires an account, code or download for substantial content.
- Storage size and the cost of deleting and redownloading games later.
Prices and available editions are volatile. Treat any price shown by a retailer as time- and region-specific rather than a permanent format rule.

Can a Digital Edition gain a disc drive later?
Some newer Digital Edition consoles can accept Sony’s separately sold detachable drive, but this is model-specific. Sony identifies CFI-2000 and CFI-2100 Digital Edition groups for the CFI-ZDD1-series drive; Sony’s US product information also describes the accessory for PS5 Pro, identified in support material as the CFI-7000 group. The original CFI-1000 Digital Edition does not support disc games or disc media through this accessory.
Model references differ between Sony pages, so read the model number on the console or packaging and match it against Sony’s compatibility information before buying. Do not assume that every PS5 Digital Edition accepts the drive. During initial setup, pairing the add-on drive requires an internet connection. Compatibility checklist for an add-on drive
- Locate the exact CFI model number.
- Confirm that it belongs to a supported CFI-2000, CFI-2100 or PS5 Pro/CFI-7000 group.
- Confirm the accessory model and regional availability on Sony’s current support page.
- Plan an internet connection for first-time pairing.
- Buy the drive only if the total console-plus-drive cost makes sense for your library.
PS4-to-PS5 upgrades: an important disc distinction
Selected PS4 games offer a PS5 digital-version upgrade. Sony says an offer may be free, paid or limited-time, depending on the game. For a disc-based upgrade, you need a drive-equipped PS5, the disc region must match the account region, and the original disc must remain inserted whenever you play the upgraded PS5 version.
A disc upgrade does not convert the disc into an account-only digital license. If you later use a Digital Edition without a drive, you cannot launch that upgraded copy. Digital PS4 purchases can be upgraded on either PS5 type when the publisher offers the feature, subject to the game’s rules. Hardware performance and storage differences
For the original 2020 PS5 and original Digital Edition comparison, Sony stated: “No. The consoles’ performance is identical, outside the existence of a disc drive.” That quotation comes from the FAQ published November 9, 2020 and should not be read as a blanket comparison of every later hardware revision.

Sony’s current US purchase page lists the standard PS5 with 1TB of storage and the Digital Edition with 825GB. Storage capacity, chassis revision and included accessories can differ by model and market, so verify the listing for the exact console you are considering. A larger listed capacity does not remove the need to manage installations: disc and digital games both occupy console storage.
What Sony’s January 2028 notice means
The current US PS5 page carries a notice saying that, from January 2028, newly released PlayStation games will be available for purchase digitally only. It also says discs for games released before January 2028 can continue to be played on the console. This is a notice on Sony’s US page with a future effective date; it does not say that older discs stop working.
If you are buying a console for a long-lived collection, a drive-equipped PS5 preserves access to pre-January-2028 disc releases while also supporting digital purchases. A supported Digital Edition can add the drive, but the CFI-1000 Digital Edition cannot, so model identification matters more than the word “Digital” on the box.
Choose the format that matches your situation
Choose a disc-drive PS5 when:
- You already own PS4 or PS5 discs.
- You want boxed editions, used-game listings or the possibility of lending and reselling physical copies.
- You want one console that accepts either format.
- You are unsure how your buying habits will change over the life of the console.
- You want a straightforward path for disc-based PS4-to-PS5 upgrades.
Choose a Digital Edition when:
- Your existing collection is entirely digital or you are starting from zero.
- You are happy to buy through PlayStation Store and do not need disc media.
- You value a disc-free setup more than access to physical editions.
- You have checked the exact model and are comfortable with the account-based access model.
- The console’s price and storage specification make sense after comparing the equivalent disc-drive model.
Consider a supported detachable drive when:
- You own a CFI-2000 or CFI-2100 Digital Edition, or a supported PS5 Pro model.
- You have verified compatibility with the exact CFI number.
- You need discs occasionally but prefer the smaller initial Digital Edition configuration.
- You have internet access for first-time pairing and have included the drive’s separate cost in your budget.
A practical buying checklist
- Inventory your PS4 and PS5 games. Mark each as disc or digital and note region-specific editions.
- Decide whether anyone else in your household needs offline access through Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Compare the current local price of the standard PS5, Digital Edition and, where compatible, the detachable drive.
- Check storage capacity and estimate how many large games you will keep installed.
- For each disc you own, confirm PS5 compatibility and whether a PS5 upgrade is offered.
- Read Sony’s current compatibility and account pages immediately before purchase because model and sharing details can change.
- Keep discs, account credentials and region information together so future upgrades and launches do not fail unexpectedly.
Bottom line for your library
Buy the disc-drive PS5 if flexibility is the priority: it accepts compatible discs and digital purchases, supports disc-based upgrade paths and leaves physical buying open. Buy the Digital Edition if your library is—and will remain—digital, and you accept account-based access with no disc support unless your exact model takes Sony’s add-on drive. Neither format has a proven universal price advantage; the better library is the one that matches the games and ownership model you already use.
