Short answer: a PS5 cannot use an ordinary Bluetooth headset as a direct game-audio device. For headset audio, use a compatible USB headset, a wireless headset with a PlayStation Link (PS Link) USB adapter, or a 3.5 mm headset plugged into the DualSense controller. Some PS Link headsets and earbuds also use Bluetooth for a phone at the same time, but that second Bluetooth connection does not make conventional Bluetooth pairing with the PS5 possible.
The important distinction is not simply “wireless versus wired.” It is the device the console recognizes: USB audio, analog controller audio, or Sony’s PS Link system. That determines whether game sound, voice chat, microphone input, controls and 3D Audio work as expected.

The compatibility answer in one table
Sony’s PS5 FAQ says wireless third-party headsets that use Bluetooth are not supported, while most USB and analog headsets are supported. Sony’s support documentation also describes a Bluetooth audio device as incompatible with PS5 consoles. The table below translates those statements into practical choices.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Connection route | What the PS5 recognizes | What you can expect | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct Bluetooth headset | A Bluetooth audio device | Not supported for PS5 game or chat audio | Sony explicitly identifies Bluetooth audio devices as incompatible with PS5. |
| USB headset | A compatible USB audio device | Usually provides game audio and, when supported by the model, microphone chat | Sony says “most” USB headsets work; verify the exact model and microphone behavior. |
| Wireless headset with a USB adapter | The adapter as a USB audio device, or a proprietary console wireless system | Can provide wireless game and chat audio | Compatibility belongs to the specific headset-and-adapter combination. A generic Bluetooth dongle is not automatically supported. |
| PlayStation Link | A paired PS Link USB adapter and compatible PS Link headset or earbuds | Wireless audio designed for supported PlayStation devices | PS Link is Sony’s separate wireless system, not ordinary Bluetooth audio. |
| 3.5 mm analog headset | The headset connected through the DualSense controller | Simple wired game and chat audio, subject to the headset and cable | Controls and wireless features can change in cable mode; microphone support requires a suitable four-conductor cable. |
Sony says headsets connected through 3.5 mm, USB-A or USB-C can be used with PS5 3D Audio. That is a compatibility statement, not a guarantee that every headset exposes every control or microphone feature.

Why ordinary Bluetooth headphones do not pair for PS5 audio
Pairing a headset with a phone does not mean the same headset can pair with a PS5. In Sony’s support material, a third-party wireless headset that relies on a Bluetooth connection is outside the PS5’s supported headset-audio paths. The console may display an incompatibility message rather than offering the headset as an output device.
This limitation applies to ordinary Bluetooth headphones, earbuds and gaming headsets attempting to connect directly to the console. It is separate from the Bluetooth radio used for accessories such as controllers, and it is separate from a PS Link product that happens to include Bluetooth for another device.
Bluetooth on a PS Link product is a second link
Some PS Link products can maintain a PS Link connection to the PS5 while also maintaining Bluetooth to a phone. Sony gives PULSE Explore as an example: the earbuds connect to PS5 through their PS Link adapter and to a phone through Bluetooth. In that arrangement, PS5 sound travels over PS Link. Bluetooth is serving the phone, not replacing the PS5 connection.

How the supported connection routes work
USB headset
A USB headset contains audio hardware that the console can enumerate as a USB audio device. Connect its USB plug to a PS5 USB port. If the console does not switch automatically, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and choose the headset under Output Device.
USB is a direct, broadly useful route because the headset’s audio and microphone travel through one console connection. However, “USB headset” describes a connection type, not a universal compatibility guarantee. Check whether the exact model lists PS5 support, whether its microphone works on PS5, and whether it requires a special adapter, firmware or companion software that the console cannot run.
Wireless headset with a USB adapter
Many console headsets use a dedicated USB adapter. The adapter handles the headset’s wireless protocol and presents an audio connection the PS5 can use. This can work even when the headset also advertises Bluetooth for phones or computers, because the PS5 is using the adapter rather than direct Bluetooth pairing.
Do not treat every USB transmitter as equivalent. A product marketed as a Bluetooth transmitter may expose a signal or profile that the PS5 does not accept, may provide listening without microphone input, or may have controls that the console cannot recognize. Sony’s documentation does not certify generic transmitters as a class.

PlayStation Link
PS Link is Sony’s proprietary wireless system for compatible devices. A PS Link headset or earbuds pair with a PS Link USB adapter connected to the PS5. Sony describes PS Link as a “lossless” wireless connection with “ultra-low latency.” Those are Sony’s descriptions of its technology, not independent measurements comparing PS Link with USB, analog or Bluetooth.
The adapter is a required part of the PS5 connection for products designed to use PS Link. Sony’s official store identifies adapter versions CFI-ZWA2 and CFI-ZWA3. Before buying a replacement or a separate adapter, check its connector type, compatibility with the exact headset and what is included in the package.
3.5 mm analog through DualSense
Plug a compatible headset into the 3.5 mm jack on the DualSense controller. This is the simplest fallback when you do not want a USB device or wireless adapter. Audio is sent from the controller to the headset, and a headset with the appropriate microphone wiring can support voice chat.
Analog operation can be a different feature set from wireless operation. The PULSE 3D manual, for example, documents wireless use with its USB adapter and wired use with a four-conductor 3.5 mm cable. In cable mode, some wireless controls and features are unavailable. A cable with the wrong conductor arrangement can provide sound but not microphone input, so confirm that the headset and cable are compatible.
Setting up each option on PS5
USB headset or USB wireless adapter
- Insert the headset’s USB plug or its dedicated wireless adapter into a PS5 USB-A or USB-C port, as required by that device.
- Turn on the headset and complete the headset’s pairing procedure if it uses a separate adapter.
- On the PS5 home screen, open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Under Output Device, select the headset or adapter if the console did not select it automatically.
- Check the input device and microphone level in the sound settings before joining a chat. Speak and watch the input meter, then adjust the headset’s mute control and the PS5 microphone level.
- Play a short clip or game and adjust the headset volume. If you want 3D Audio, use the PS5’s 3D Audio settings with the connected headset and run the available personalization process.
The exact controls shown can differ by headset. A USB connection that produces game sound does not by itself prove that the microphone, sidetone, mute button or balance controls are supported.
PS Link headset or earbuds
- Connect the PS Link USB adapter supplied for the headset or earbuds to a compatible PS5 port.
- Power on the PS Link device and put it into the pairing mode specified by its manual if it is not already paired.
- Wait for the PS5 to recognize the adapter, then open Settings > Sound > Audio Output.
- Choose the PS Link adapter or headset as the output device if automatic switching has not occurred.
- Test both game audio and microphone chat. If the product supports a simultaneous phone connection, pair the phone over Bluetooth separately; leave the PS5 connection on PS Link.
3.5 mm headset
- Insert the headset plug fully into the DualSense controller’s 3.5 mm jack.
- Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and confirm the controller-connected headset is selected as the output device.
- Check the microphone input level and test voice chat. If other players cannot hear you, verify that the cable is a compatible four-conductor headset cable and that the controller mute button is not active.
- Adjust the controller’s headset volume and the game/chat balance where available.
Is USB audio better than Bluetooth on PS5?
For a PS5, the first comparison is compatibility: supported USB audio works, while direct Bluetooth headset audio does not. That makes USB the practical choice for a headset you want to plug straight into the console.
It is not accurate to claim that USB always has lower latency or better sound than every Bluetooth implementation. The available Sony material does not provide an independent latency test, codec comparison or numeric measurement covering USB, analog, PS Link and Bluetooth on PS5. Headset electronics, wireless protocol, processing and software can all affect the result.

Sony characterizes PS Link as “ultra-low latency” and “lossless,” while describing Bluetooth as having wider compatibility across devices. Treat those statements as Sony’s product descriptions. They explain why PS Link is positioned as a console link and Bluetooth as a cross-device link; they do not establish a universal performance ranking for every headset.
Game audio, chat and controls: what to verify
Choosing a connection only for sound can lead to a disappointing setup. Check these functions separately:
- Game output: Does the PS5 list the device under Output Device, and can you hear system and game audio?
- Microphone input: Is the headset microphone listed or active, and does the input meter respond when you speak?
- Chat balance: Does the headset or PS5 expose a game/chat mix control, or must you change the balance in software?
- Mute behavior: Does the headset mute button control the PS5 microphone state, or only the headset itself?
- Headset controls: Volume wheels, sidetone, equalizer presets and special buttons may require a supported adapter or may be unavailable in analog mode.
- 3D Audio: Sony includes 3.5 mm, USB-A and USB-C headsets among the connection types usable with PS5 3D Audio, but the experience and available settings depend on the connected device.
Which connection should you choose?
Choose USB when you want the simplest direct console connection
A compatible USB headset is a good fit for a desk or gaming setup where a cable is acceptable. It avoids direct Bluetooth pairing and normally carries both playback and microphone audio through one port. Confirm PS5 compatibility and chat support before purchase, because Sony’s wording is “most USB headsets,” not “all USB headsets.”
Choose PS Link when you want supported wireless operation
PS Link is appropriate when the headset or earbuds are explicitly designed for PS Link and include, or are compatible with, the necessary USB adapter. It offers a console-specific wireless route while allowing some products to keep a separate Bluetooth connection to a phone. Do not buy a PS Link adapter expecting it to convert an ordinary Bluetooth headset into a PS5 headset.
Choose analog when reliability and simplicity matter most
A DualSense-connected headset has no wireless battery to charge and no console adapter to pair. It is useful as a backup or for players who already own a compatible headset. The trade-offs are a cable to the controller and possible loss of wireless-only controls or features.

- Look for explicit PS5 compatibility for the exact headset model, not merely “Bluetooth” or “USB” in the specifications.
- Confirm whether the package includes the required USB adapter and whether it uses USB-A, USB-C or another connector.
- Verify microphone and voice-chat support, especially for adapters marketed primarily for audio transmission.
- Check whether the headset needs Windows, macOS or mobile software for setup; that software may not run on PS5.
- For analog use, confirm that the cable is a compatible four-conductor headset cable if microphone input is required.
- Check controls that matter to you: mute, volume, game/chat balance, sidetone and 3D Audio behavior.
- For PS Link products, match the adapter and headset generation. Sony lists adapter versions CFI-ZWA2 and CFI-ZWA3, so verify the connector and package contents before ordering.
- Do not assume a generic USB Bluetooth transmitter will work. Compatibility, microphone support and console recognition must be established for that specific model.
Troubleshooting when the headset is not heard
The headset is connected but the PS5 still uses the TV
Open Settings > Sound > Audio Output and set the headset or adapter under Output Device. If it is missing, unplug and reconnect the USB device, power-cycle the headset, and check whether the adapter is connected to the required USB port type. For an analog headset, reseat the plug in the DualSense jack.

You hear game audio but the microphone does not work
Check the PS5 input-device selection and microphone level, then inspect the headset’s physical mute control. With a 3.5 mm connection, confirm the cable has the microphone contacts required by the headset; a stereo-only cable can carry playback without carrying mic input. With a wireless adapter, verify that the adapter-and-headset pair supports chat rather than listening only.
Bluetooth pairing fails
If you are trying to pair an ordinary Bluetooth headset directly, the failure is expected: Sony identifies Bluetooth audio devices as incompatible with PS5. Use a compatible USB audio route, a supported PS Link adapter and device, or the DualSense’s 3.5 mm connection instead.
A generic Bluetooth transmitter works for sound but not chat
That result does not establish full PS5 compatibility. Some transmitters expose playback but not a usable microphone path, and Sony does not certify generic transmitters in its general compatibility guidance. Check the specific transmitter’s PS5 support and microphone implementation; otherwise use a headset-and-adapter combination documented for PS5.
Analog mode loses buttons or wireless features
This can be normal. The PULSE 3D manual, for example, documents feature limitations when the headset is connected by a four-conductor cable instead of its USB wireless adapter. Review the exact headset manual rather than assuming every control is available in wired mode.
What the official guidance establishes—and what it does not
Sony’s PS5 FAQ, published November 9, 2020, establishes the core compatibility rule: third-party wireless headsets using Bluetooth are not supported, while most USB and analog headsets are supported. Sony’s current support language also identifies a Bluetooth audio device as incompatible with PS5 consoles.
The guidance does not create a universal compatibility list for every USB headset, analog cable, wireless transmitter or third-party adapter. It also does not provide a single latency figure, codec comparison or independent sound-quality ranking for USB, analog, PS Link and Bluetooth. For a purchase or troubleshooting decision, the exact headset, adapter, cable and microphone behavior matter more than the marketing label alone.
