You can use a PS4 disc only in a PS5 with a disc drive, while digital PS4 purchases appear in your account library. Original PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs do not run natively on any PS5. Selected older games are available separately through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, either as downloads or streams depending on the title, plan and region.
A PS5 upgrade is a separate PS5 version of a game, not a prerequisite for playing a compatible PS4 version. Always check the current listing for the exact game before buying a disc, upgrade or subscription.

PS5 compatibility by PlayStation generation
| Original generation | What you can use on PS5 | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 | The overwhelming majority of the 4,000-plus PS4 library. Use a disc on a disc-drive PS5 or download a digital purchase from your account library. | A small number of games are marked PS4-only. A compatible title can still have missing features or errors, and Game Boost benefits vary by game. |
| PS3 | Selected PS3 games in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, generally through cloud streaming in supported markets and plans. | Original PS3 discs are unsupported. The current US catalog describes its PS3 classics as streaming-only. |
| PS2 | Selected PS2 classics offered as catalog downloads or streams, depending on the individual listing. | Original PS2 discs do not provide native backward compatibility. A catalog release is a separate version. |
| PS1 | Selected PS1 classics offered through the Classics Catalog. | Original PS1 discs do not run natively. Delivery method and availability vary by title and region. |
“Backward compatibility” therefore covers two different experiences. A PS4 game running from your disc or library is compatibility with your existing software. A PS1, PS2 or PS3 title in the Classics Catalog is a separately distributed version, not your original disc being read by the PS5.
Can you play PS4 games on PS5?
Yes, in most cases. PlayStation says the overwhelming majority of the 4,000-plus PS4 games are playable on PS5. This includes games you own physically and games attached to your PlayStation account digitally.

Using a PS4 disc
- Confirm that your console is a PS5 model with a disc drive. A PS4 disc cannot be used by the PS5 Digital Edition.
- Insert the PS4 disc. The console installs the game data and uses the disc as the ownership check whenever you play.
- Keep the disc inserted during play. Installation does not convert the game into a disc-free digital license.
Disc-based compatibility does not guarantee that every peripheral, online service or feature behaves exactly as it did on PS4. Check the game’s current support information if a particular feature matters to you.
Using a digital PS4 game
- Sign in to the PlayStation account that bought or claimed the game.
- Open your Game Library on PS5 and select the Collection or Purchased section.
- Choose the PS4 title and select Download. The PS4 version will be identified separately from any PS5 version or upgrade.
Your digital license remains tied to the purchasing account. A game can be compatible while its downloadable add-ons, saved-data format or online services have separate requirements.
Exceptions and performance changes
Some PS4 games are explicitly labelled “PS4-only” and will not launch on PS5. Other compatible games can contain errors or lose a feature. Game Boost can improve loading, frame-rate stability or resolution in selected titles, but it is not a universal performance guarantee. Look at the individual game listing rather than assuming every compatible title receives the same enhancement.

Backward compatibility versus a PS4-to-PS5 upgrade
Playing the PS4 edition on PS5 and obtaining a PS5 upgrade are separate paths:
| Path | What you receive | Typical requirement |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 compatibility | The PS4 edition running on PS5 hardware. | An eligible disc or digital PS4 license; no upgrade is inherently required. |
| PS5 upgrade | A distinct PS5 edition, often with enhanced graphics, faster loading or DualSense features. | The publisher may make it free or charge a fee. Offers can be time-limited and require an internet connection. |
| Disc-based upgrade | The PS5 digital edition associated with an eligible PS4 disc. | An eligible disc and a PS5 with a disc drive. The disc normally remains necessary as the license check. |
Because the terms differ by game, try the compatible PS4 version before purchasing add-ons intended for it. PlayStation specifically advises confirming that the PS4 experience is acceptable on PS5 first. A paid or free upgrade changes the edition you play; it does not make an incompatible PS4 title compatible.
Can PS5 play PS3 discs?
No. PS5 consoles do not read original PS3 game discs. In supported markets, selected PS3 games are offered through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, and the current US catalog identifies those PS3 classics as streaming-only.
Streaming is a service delivery method rather than disc compatibility. You do not insert the PS3 disc, and access can end if a catalog license, membership or regional offering changes. Check the live listing for the exact game and the plan available in your country.

Can PS5 play PS2 or PS1 discs?
No. Original PS2 and PS1 discs do not provide native backward compatibility on PS5. Some games from those generations appear as separately published Classics Catalog releases. Depending on the listing, the release may be downloadable, streamable or limited to one of those options.
A catalog version may differ from the disc-era release in resolution, save handling, language options, trophies or available features. Treat it as a new digital product and verify the title page before assuming that your old disc, save or accessories will carry over.
How to find older games in the Classics Catalog
The catalog is the official route to selected legacy games, not a method for running your own PS1, PS2 or PS3 discs.
- On PS5, open the PlayStation Plus area.
- Select Benefits.
- Choose Classics Catalog.
- Open the individual game listing and confirm its generation, delivery method, membership requirement and region.
- Select Download when a local installation is offered, or select the streaming option when that is the only method.
The available catalogue changes. A game shown in one country may be absent in another, and the same title can have different download or streaming options by region. The live game finder is more reliable than a static list.
Do you need PlayStation Plus to play old games?
You do not need PlayStation Plus merely to run a compatible PS4 game that you own on disc or digitally. The requirement is ownership of that PS4 license, plus a disc-drive PS5 when the license is physical.
Classics Catalog access is different. It requires the membership plan that includes the catalog in your market. The current US plan information places the Classics Catalog and cloud streaming among Premium benefits. This is a US-specific description; plans and benefits can differ elsewhere, so check your regional membership page.
Subscription access is not the same as owning a permanent copy. If a game leaves the catalog or your qualifying membership ends, access can change even though you previously played it through the service.

Streaming requirements and restrictions
PlayStation states that Classics Catalog streaming requires broadband of at least 5 Mbps. For 1080p output, the game must support that resolution and the connection should be at least 15 Mbps. If the connection drops below the required level, the stream may reduce resolution.

Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →| Item | Requirement or effect |
|---|---|
| Minimum broadband for streaming | At least 5 Mbps, according to PlayStation’s stated requirement. |
| 1080p streaming | The game must support 1080p and the connection should be at least 15 Mbps. |
| When bandwidth falls | Resolution may be reduced to keep the stream running. |
| Features disabled during streaming | Remote Play, Share Play, broadcasting, PS VR and mouse or keyboard use are unavailable. |
These figures describe the connection to the streaming service, not a guarantee of latency or image quality. Wi-Fi congestion, household traffic and distance to the service can still affect responsiveness. Downloading a catalog game, when offered, avoids those streaming-specific restrictions but still requires the appropriate membership and available storage.
Disc, download and stream: which version fits?
| Method | Ownership or access | Console and connection implications |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 disc compatibility | Your physical PS4 license. | Requires a PS5 with a disc drive; disc stays required to play. |
| Digital PS4 compatibility | Your account’s digital license. | Works on either PS5 model when the title is compatible; download requires internet and storage. |
| Classics download | Catalog access under the applicable membership and listing terms. | Downloads locally; exact availability and features are title- and region-dependent. |
| Classics streaming | Subscription-based access while the title and plan remain available. | Requires at least 5 Mbps broadband and has streaming feature restrictions. |
| PS5 upgrade | A separate PS5 edition, free or paid depending on the game. | Requires an internet connection for the upgrade; disc offers require an eligible disc and disc-drive console. |
Controller compatibility
Supported PS4 games on PS5 can work with the DualSense, DUALSHOCK 4 and licensed third-party gamepads, subject to the game and accessory’s support. PS5 games require DualSense. For PS VR on PS5, PlayStation recommends DUALSHOCK 4 for the best experience.
A controller cannot change generation compatibility: no gamepad makes an original PS1, PS2 or PS3 disc readable. Controller support is therefore an accessory consideration after you have confirmed the game’s delivery method.
A practical check before you buy or subscribe
- Identify the edition: Is the listing the original PS4 version, a PS5 upgrade or a Classics Catalog release?
- Check your console: A physical PS4 license needs a disc drive; the Digital Edition cannot read it.
- Check the access method: Confirm whether the older title is downloadable, streamable or restricted to one option.
- Check your region and plan: Catalog and membership benefits are not globally identical.
- Check connection needs: Streaming requires the stated broadband minimum and disables several features.
- Check add-ons and saves: Confirm that downloadable content and saved data apply to the specific edition you intend to use.
What the “99 percent” figure means
In a PlayStation Blog statement dated October 9, 2020, Hideaki Nishino, then CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Platform Business Group, wrote: “When the PlayStation 5 launches this November, more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4 will be playable on PS5.” That was a launch-era estimate, not a current retest of every game.
Current PlayStation support wording is less numerical: “The overwhelming majority of the 4,000+ PS4 games are playable on PS5 consoles.” Use that qualification when discussing today’s compatibility, and verify a specific game rather than treating either statement as a promise that every PS4 title works perfectly.
