Short answer: a PS5 does not read original PS1 or PS2 discs, and PSP media is not a PS5 format. You can play selected older games only when Sony has released that title as a digital classic, remaster, remake, or supported stream. The exact selection depends on the game, your country, your PlayStation Plus plan and whether Sony still lists the title. Check the live regional catalog before buying or subscribing for a specific game.
Can I play my old PS1 or PS2 discs on PS5?
No. The PS5 safety documentation for the disc model says PlayStation-format and PS2-format software cannot be played from disc. In practical terms, inserting an original PS1 or PS2 disc will not turn it into a playable PS5 game. A PS5 also has no drive or slot for PSP UMD media, so a PSP game cannot be inserted and launched either.

| Original system | Original media on PS5 | What can work instead |
|---|---|---|
| PlayStation (PS1) | Original discs do not play | Selected digital classics, remasters or remakes when separately released |
| PlayStation 2 | Original discs do not play | Selected downloadable remasters/remakes and, in some markets, selected original PS2 games streamed through PlayStation Plus Premium |
| PSP | UMD media is not a PS5 format | Selected PSP games released as digital Classics Catalog downloads |
This is why “PS5 backward compatible with PS1, PS2 and PSP” is misleading without a qualification. The console is not accepting the old media directly; it is running a separately packaged version of a particular game through an official digital or streaming route.
Three different ways an older game can appear on PS5
Digital classic
A digital classic is an older game Sony has packaged for a modern download. Some original PS1 and PSP games have been offered this way through the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. The release is a PS5-compatible product in the store; it is not a license that automatically covers every game from that original console.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Remaster or remake
A remaster or remake is a new release based on an older game. It may have updated graphics, controls, performance or other changes and may be sold as a normal digital game. Sony treats downloadable remastered or remade PS2 games separately from original PS2 titles available for streaming. Buying a remaster therefore does not mean that the original PS2 disc is supported.
Streaming
Some selected original PS2 titles have been available to stream through PlayStation Plus Premium in selected markets. Streaming runs the game on Sony’s servers and sends the video and audio to your PS5; it does not install or authenticate your physical disc. A streamed title can disappear when its catalog term ends, even if the underlying game remains historically associated with PS2.
Which PS1 games can you play?
There is no permanent, worldwide list of every PS1 game that works on PS5. Sony has offered selected original PlayStation games as digital Classics Catalog downloads, but inclusion is title-specific and can differ by country and date. A PS1 disc collection is therefore not a compatibility list.
To play a particular PS1 game, look for the exact digital listing in your country’s PlayStation store or Classics Catalog. Confirm that the listing identifies the edition available for PS5 and that your current membership or purchase option is eligible. A title shown in another country’s catalog, in an old announcement or in a past subscription lineup is not proof that it is available to you now.
Some PS1 games may also return as a separately sold remake or remaster. Treat that as a distinct product: the disc, save data, features and price can differ from the original, and the product may be available even when the original classic is not.

Which PS2 games can you play?
Original PS2 discs are not playable on PS5. PS2 access is split between two products that are easy to confuse:
Downloadable remasters and remakes
These are modern releases that you download to the console. They can be purchased or included in a promotion according to the individual product listing. They are not evidence of general PS2 disc compatibility, and a remaster’s presence does not imply that every game in the same series is available.
Original PS2 games offered by streaming
In selected markets, Sony has offered some original PS2 titles through the Premium tier’s catalog for streaming. Availability is controlled by the live catalog and can change. Streaming also depends on the service being offered in your country and on the title remaining licensed and listed.
When comparing a PS2 option, identify the delivery method before you commit: a downloaded remaster is installed locally, while an original PS2 stream requires an active service connection and an eligible membership. Neither method authorizes an original PS2 disc to run.
Which PSP games can you play?
PSP UMDs are not readable by PS5, and PSP hardware media cannot be converted into a PS5 license simply by owning the disc. Sony has nevertheless offered selected original PSP games as digital downloads in the Classics Catalog.

- Feel you in-game actions and environement simulated through haptic feedback
- Experience varying force and tension at your fingertips with adaptive triggers
- Chat online through the built-in microphone
- Connect a headset directly via the 3.5mm jack

PSP availability is especially title- and region-dependent. Search for the exact game rather than assuming that a whole franchise, publisher or PSP library is supported. If the game is absent from your local store and Classics Catalog, the PS5 has no official way to launch your UMD directly.

Use the live listing, not a general compatibility claim. On a PS5, the basic catalog path is:
- From the Games home screen, open PlayStation Plus.
- Choose Benefits.
- Open Classics Catalog.
- Search the exact game title, including the spelling and regional version shown on its original packaging.
- Open the game’s product page and verify whether it is downloadable, streamable or both.
- Check that the required membership tier is active and that the listing is available in your account’s country.
Also use Sony’s official PlayStation Plus games finder. It can reveal a difference between a title that is purchasable as a standalone digital release and one that is included only while your subscription remains eligible. If the game finder and your console show different results, trust the current listing tied to your account and region.
- Do not rely on a disc: the original PS1 or PS2 disc will not supply the license.
- Check the edition: a remake, remaster and original classic can have separate store pages.
- Check the access method: download and streaming have different requirements and ownership terms.
- Check dates: catalog games can have announced end dates or be removed when availability changes.
Download versus stream versus remaster
| Option | How it runs | Typical access condition | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Digital classic download | Installed on the PS5 from a supported store or catalog listing | Eligible purchase or the required PlayStation Plus benefit | Only selected titles and regions are supported |
| PS2 stream | Runs on Sony’s servers and is delivered over the internet | Premium membership, supported market and listed title | Requires a reliable connection and can leave the catalog |
| Remaster or remake | Modern downloadable game released separately | Product-specific purchase or promotion | May differ from the original game and does not support the old disc |
The choice matters if you want reliable offline play, original presentation or the lowest long-term dependence on a catalog. A download avoids the need to stream every session, but a subscription download can still depend on membership rules. A stream is convenient when supported, yet image quality and responsiveness depend on your connection. A remake or remaster may be the easiest current purchase, but it is not necessarily the same version you remember.
PlayStation Plus requirements and streaming limits
Current US PlayStation materials place Classics Catalog access under the Premium tier. Sony’s service names, tiers and benefits can differ by market and can change over time, so check the plan displayed for your account rather than assuming that a lower tier includes classics.

Sony states that a minimum broadband speed of 5 Mbps is required for game streaming. For 1080p streaming, the game must support that resolution and the connection must reach at least 15 Mbps. These figures describe streaming requirements; they do not guarantee that a particular PS1, PS2 or PSP title is in the catalog or that it is available in your country.
Catalog access is also not the same as permanent ownership. A title can be added, given an end date or removed as the service changes. If a game is important to you, record whether the store page describes a standalone purchase, a subscription entitlement or streaming-only access before you start it.

Regional catalog differences
Licensing and service libraries are country-specific. A title listed on a US page may not be offered in another market, and a game available in one country may use a different edition or rating in another.
Membership mismatch
Classics Catalog access requires the applicable plan. A game may be visible in the finder but locked when your account lacks the required tier.

Sony can change the lineup and publish end dates. An announcement or launch article from 2022 describes the service structure at that time; it is historical context, not a current promise that every listed title remains available.

Different product, similar name
A store result may be a remake, remaster, soundtrack bundle or regional edition rather than the original classic. Open the full product page and confirm the platform and delivery method.
Streaming availability or network problem
If the listing is stream-only, downloads will not be offered. If streaming fails, test the connection, use a wired connection where practical, pause other heavy network activity and confirm that the service meets the stated speed requirement. None of these steps can make an unsupported disc playable.
What Sony’s launch FAQ actually said
In its November 9, 2020 PS5 launch FAQ, Sony answered the question “Can I play original PlayStation, PS2, or PS3 games on PS5?” with “No, PS5 will play PS5 games and more than 99% of PS4 games, including PlayStation VR games, only.” That statement explains the console’s original launch position, but it should not be read as a claim that later digital Classics Catalog releases do not exist. The later catalog route is a separate, title-by-title offering.
The “more than 99%” figure in that FAQ concerns PS4 compatibility. It is not a measurement of PS1, PS2 or PSP support and cannot be used to estimate how much of those older libraries can run on PS5.
A practical decision checklist
Before spending money or renewing a subscription for an older game, verify all of the following:
- The exact title and regional edition are listed for your account’s country.
- The listing says PS5, or clearly identifies a supported Classics Catalog version.
- You know whether access is a one-time purchase, a subscription download or streaming.
- You have the required PlayStation Plus tier if the game is a catalog benefit.
- Your internet connection meets the streaming requirement when streaming is the only route.
- You understand that catalog availability can change and that an original disc remains unsupported.
If none of those conditions is met, the honest answer is that the PS5 cannot officially play that particular PS1, PS2 or PSP copy. Keeping the original hardware is the only way to use the original disc or UMD itself; a PS5 accessory or controller cannot add an unsupported disc format.
