The announced space is meant to help players discover anime and anime-inspired games and reach the Crunchyroll app more easily. It is not a newly announced streaming service, and Sony has not yet confirmed an exact launch date, supported countries, or membership requirements.
What Sony has announced for PS5
PlayStation leader Hideaki Nishino announced the planned hub at the first Crunchyroll Anime Future Forum, according to contemporaneous reports from Gematsu and Push Square. The concept is a dedicated space in the PS5 home experience that brings together anime, anime-inspired games, and easier access to the Crunchyroll app.

That description points to discovery and access. The announcement does not establish that the hub itself will stream video, unlock paid episodes, or change Crunchyroll membership terms. Nor does it say that the hub will be mandatory or explain how players will control its placement on the home screen.

Is Crunchyroll new to PlayStation?
No. The Crunchyroll app is already available on PS5; the planned hub is described as a way to make it easier to find and access. Existing PS5 owners have no announced need to buy new hardware for the feature, based on the announcement coverage.
Crunchyroll President Rahul Purini described the move as an extension of the companies’ relationship: “From Crunchyroll membership on PlayStation, to the upcoming Ghost of Tsushima: Legends anime series, today we take that partnership with Sony Interactive Entertainment one step further with an anime hub on PlayStation. Serving fans means meeting them where they already are.” The quote was reproduced by Push Square.

How the planned hub differs from LIVE TV on PS5
PS5 already has a separate anime option through LIVE TV, a free, ad-supported destination in the console’s Media section. Sony announced its U.S. launch on August 31, 2026. The planned hub and LIVE TV serve different purposes:

PlayStation’s LIVE TV launch post named anime such as Naruto, Sailor Moon, Hunter x Hunter, and Death Note, along with Crunchyroll channels for Black Clover and box sets. Sony Pictures Entertainment also described the two Crunchyroll channels in its announcement of the service. This existing option is distinct from the planned home-experience hub.

Will the hub require Crunchyroll Premium or PS Plus?
The announcement coverage does not confirm whether a paid Crunchyroll subscription or PlayStation Plus membership will be required. It also does not explain which hub features, if any, will be available without a subscription. Treat those requirements as unannounced rather than assuming the hub includes paid streaming access.
Why Sony is building an anime hub
The hub fits into Sony’s broader investment in anime, which the company identified as an important growth sector in its May 8, 2026 corporate strategy announcement. Sony Group said Crunchyroll had more than 21 million paid subscribers globally as of the end of March 2026. That figure is paid subscribers, not total registered users.
Sony describes its anime activities as spanning production, fan engagement, marketing, and global distribution. A PS5 hub would add a console-based discovery route to that broader effort, but Sony has not published an estimate of the hub’s audience, uptake, or financial impact.
