A PS5 with a disc drive can use compatible PS4 game discs; the PS5 Digital Edition cannot. PS5 does not support PS3 discs, and the available guidance does not establish a complete PS1 or PS2 disc-compatibility list.
For older games, the decisive question is not simply “PS4 or PS5?” It is how you own or access the title: a PS4 disc, a digital purchase, or a game in the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog. Your country, membership tier, the individual game and whether you need downloading or streaming can change the answer.

First, separate PS4 backward compatibility from original classics
“Classic PlayStation games” can mean two different things:
- Older games that you own as PS4 releases. These are the ordinary PS4 games that run on PS4 and, in most cases, on PS5.
- Games from the original PlayStation, PlayStation 2 or PlayStation 3 generations. These may be sold as remasters, re-releases or subscription-catalog titles, but that is different from inserting an old disc and expecting native playback.
PS5’s strongest compatibility story is the first category. Sony’s current support guidance describes thousands of playable PS4 titles on PS5. Its launch-era estimate, published in October 2020, said more than 99% of the 4,000-plus PS4 games would work on day one. That is a historical launch statement, not a current independent audit; the current practical rule is still to check the particular game.

The second category depends on how Sony has made a title available today. The supported route covered by the current guidance is the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog on PS4 and PS5, with download or streaming determined by the title and membership. An original disc is not automatically converted into a digital license.
PS4 and PS5 compared for older games
| What you want to play | PS4 | PS5 |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 games bought digitally | Play compatible purchases through the account that owns them. | Most PS4 games are playable; verify the individual title for exceptions or missing features. |
| Physical PS4 game discs | Use the disc in a compatible PS4 console. | Use the disc only in a PS5 model with a disc drive; the disc must remain inserted while playing. |
| PS4 game discs on a PS5 Digital Edition | Not applicable. | Not supported because the console has no disc drive. |
| Selected older games in the Classics Catalog | Browse eligible titles with the appropriate PlayStation Plus membership; download or stream where offered. | Same catalog route, with title, country and membership restrictions. |
| PS3 discs | Not established as a general disc-playback route by the cited guidance. | PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. |
| PS1 and PS2 discs | The cited guidance does not provide a complete model-wide compatibility matrix. | The cited guidance does not provide a complete model-wide compatibility matrix. |
| Performance improvements | Games run according to the PS4 version and its patches. | Some PS4 games may benefit from Game Boost or a separate PS5 version, but behavior is title-specific. |
How PS4 games work on PS5
For a digital PS4 purchase, sign in to the account that owns the game and look in the game library. A compatible title can be downloaded to PS5 in the same general way as other owned games. Availability can still be affected by account region, licensing and whether the title has been withdrawn from sale, so a past purchase should be checked from the owning account rather than assumed from a search result.
For a physical release, put the compatible PS4 disc into a PS5 with a disc drive and install the game. The disc acts as the license check, so it must stay in the console whenever you launch the game. This is the key hardware difference between a disc-drive PS5 and the PS5 Digital Edition.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCompatibility does not mean that every PS4 feature is identical. Sony warns that some PS4 functions may be unavailable on PS5 and that some games can display errors or behave unexpectedly. Treat “playable” as a compatibility baseline, not a promise of perfect emulation, identical peripherals or every online feature.
What the 99% figure does and does not mean
In a PlayStation.Blog article dated October 9, 2020, Hideaki Nishino wrote that “more than 99 percent of the 4000+ games available on PS4” would be playable on PS5 on day one. The number is useful context for the scale of PS5’s PS4 support, but it was Sony’s launch expectation in 2020. It should not be presented as a newly measured compatibility percentage for 2026.
What happens with PS1, PS2 and PS3 discs?
PS3 discs: do not insert them expecting playback
Sony’s current backward-compatibility guidance explicitly says PS5 consoles do not support PlayStation 3 discs. A PS3 disc therefore is not a shortcut to playing that generation on PS5. If a particular PS3 game appears in a current catalog or has a modern re-release, that is a separate license and delivery method.
PS1 and PS2 discs: avoid a blanket promise
The available official guidance does not publish a complete PS1- or PS2-disc matrix covering every PS4 and PS5 model. Some individual games have been reissued digitally or included in a catalog, while others have not. Because those releases differ by title and market, check the exact game’s current store or catalog listing instead of assuming that an original disc will work.
Using the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog
The Classics Catalog is the clearest supported way in the cited guidance to access selected older games on both PS4 and PS5. Sony’s US instructions for the Classics Catalog explain that members browse the catalog on the console, select an eligible game and then download or stream it when that option is offered. The relevant membership tier on the cited US pages is PlayStation Plus Premium. Plan names, benefits and catalogs can vary by country.

What you need to check before relying on a catalog title
- Membership: The game must be included with a suitable PlayStation Plus plan; ownership of a different plan does not automatically grant access.
- Market: Catalog lineups are country-specific. A title listed for one country may be absent in another.
- Delivery method: Some games can be downloaded, some can be streamed, and some offer both. Sony says a wide selection of classic PS3 games is streaming-only.
- Current listing: Catalog availability can change. Check the game’s listing immediately before starting a playthrough.
Download versus stream
A downloadable catalog game is installed on the console and avoids the variable latency of a cloud connection, but it still requires an active entitlement under the relevant membership. Streaming starts without a full local installation, yet it depends on the service, the game and your connection.
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for streaming Classics Catalog games. For 1080p streaming, Sony lists 15 Mbps, provided the game supports 1080p. Those figures are minimum connection guidance, not a guarantee of consistent latency or image quality; Wi-Fi congestion, household traffic and network distance can still affect play.
During streaming, Sony lists several unavailable or unsupported functions: Remote Play, Share Play, broadcasting, PSVR and third-party controller support. If one of those functions is essential to your setup, choose a downloadable version or a locally installed release when one exists.

PS5 disc-drive hardware versus PS5 Digital Edition
Choose the PS5 hardware around the way you own games, not around the word “classic.” A PS5 with a disc drive is the only PS5 route for compatible physical PS4 releases. The PS5 Digital Edition can play compatible digital PS4 purchases and catalog games, but it cannot read a PS4 disc, a PS3 disc or any other physical game disc.
If your library is mostly digital, the Digital Edition removes no disc-based games you already own digitally. If you have a shelf of PS4 game discs, buying the Digital Edition means buying digital licenses again, if those games are still sold and an upgrade or replacement is offered. Keep the physical disc with a disc-drive PS5 even after installing the game: it remains the license check.
Game Boost, PS5 versions and upgrades
Backward compatibility and a PS5 upgrade are separate things. A compatible PS4 game may simply run as the PS4 version on PS5. Some titles use PS5 Game Boost for a higher or steadier frame rate, while others offer a native PS5 version with revised graphics, loading or features.
| Situation | What it means | What to verify |
|---|---|---|
| PS4 version runs on PS5 | Basic backward compatibility; improvements are not guaranteed. | Check the game’s current support listing for known errors, missing features and Game Boost behavior. |
| Eligible PS5 upgrade | The publisher may offer a free, paid or time-limited upgrade. | Price, promotion end date, region and whether your edition qualifies. |
| Upgrade from a PS4 disc | Requires a PS5 with a disc drive, even if the upgraded software is downloaded. | Keep the disc inserted and make sure the disc region aligns with the account where required. |
| PS4 game obtained as a PlayStation Plus benefit | It is not automatically eligible for an upgrade. | Look for an explicit exception or eligibility statement. |
Sony’s PS4-to-PS5 upgrade guidance says an upgrade can be free, paid or limited to a stated period. For disc-based upgrades, the PS5 must have a disc drive, and regional alignment between disc and account may matter. A PS4 game redeemed as a PlayStation Plus benefit is not eligible unless the listing specifically says otherwise.

Save files are decided game by game
Do not assume that a PS4 save will transfer into a PS5 version. Sony’s 2020 compatibility explanation says the developer decides whether a game supports save transfer and how it works. A save may transfer automatically, require an in-game export, or remain tied to the PS4 version. Check the title’s own instructions before deleting the old installation or starting a long playthrough.

A practical check before you buy or subscribe
- Identify the exact release. Write down the game name, platform version and whether you have a disc, a digital purchase or only a subscription entitlement.
- Check the PS5 model. If the game is on a disc, confirm that the console has a working disc drive. A PS5 Digital Edition cannot accept it.
- Search the current PlayStation listing. Use the game’s store or catalog page in your country and look for PS4 compatibility, a PS5 version, upgrade terms and download or stream labels.
- Read the support notes. Look for warnings about missing features, errors, peripherals, online services and save transfer.
- Confirm the membership tier. For a Classics Catalog title, verify that your current plan includes it and that the entitlement is available in your market.
- Choose delivery. Prefer download when you need predictable latency or when streaming restrictions affect your setup. Choose streaming only when the title is streaming-only or local storage is the greater constraint.
- Preserve the old save. Back it up or leave the PS4 installation intact until you have confirmed that the PS5 version recognizes your progress.
Which console makes sense for different classic-game libraries?
You already own PS4 discs
A disc-drive PS5 gives you the broadest upgrade path: most compatible PS4 discs can be installed, and some may qualify for a PS5 upgrade. A PS4 remains sufficient if you do not need PS5-specific versions or Game Boost, but choosing a PS5 Digital Edition would abandon the discs as a playable library.
You own mostly digital PS4 games
PS5 is generally the more capable successor because it preserves access to most PS4 purchases while adding title-specific performance options. Check exceptions and account availability before assuming that every item in an old library will appear unchanged.
You mainly want catalog versions of older games
Compare the current Classics Catalog listing, not the console generation alone. Both PS4 and PS5 can use the catalog route described by Sony, but the plan, country, title and delivery method control access. A PS5 does not turn every original disc into a catalog entitlement.

You specifically own PS3 discs
Do not choose PS5 expecting those discs to work. Sony explicitly excludes PS3 disc playback on PS5. Look for a separately licensed re-release or a catalog version of the particular game instead.
Common problems and fixes
The PS5 does not recognize a PS4 disc
- Confirm that the console is not a Digital Edition.
- Clean and reinsert the disc, then check whether the disc is actually a PS4 game rather than a PS3 release.
- Verify the title’s compatibility listing and keep the disc inserted after installation.
A catalog game is missing
- Check that the membership tier is the one required for Classics Catalog access.
- Confirm the account country and search the local catalog listing.
- Look for a change in catalog status or a streaming-only designation.
The game runs, but a feature is absent or unstable
That can be a compatibility limitation rather than a hardware fault. Consult the game’s current support notes, install available patches and check whether the publisher recommends the PS4 version, a PS5 upgrade or a particular setting. Sony’s compatibility guidance warns that some features may be unavailable and some titles may show errors or unexpected behavior.
The PS5 version cannot see your PS4 save
Check the developer’s save-transfer method for that game. A PS4 save and a PS5-version save can be separate, and transfer support is not universal. Keep the original save until the new version has loaded it successfully.
Bottom line for a classic-game buyer
For a mixed modern library that includes PS4 games, PS5 is the stronger general-purpose choice, provided you buy the disc-drive model when physical games matter. For original-generation classics, neither PS4 nor PS5 should be treated as a universal disc machine: use the individual game’s current release or the PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog, and verify market, membership and streaming conditions before committing.
