The transfer applies to the purchased GTA$ balance attached to that profile; it is not a separate redemption of a PS4 card or code on the PS5 console.
Do PS4 Shark Cards work on PS5?
They do when “work” means that Shark Card funds already credited to your GTA Online profile carry over through an eligible PlayStation 4-to-PlayStation 5 profile migration. Rockstar treats Shark Card proceeds as purchased GTA$, which can transfer between platforms in the same console family during migration. Rockstar’s GTA$ transfer policy specifically identifies PS4 to PS5 as a same-family route.

This is a profile-balance transfer, not a guarantee that an unused PS4-specific card or code can be redeemed independently on PS5. Rockstar’s PlayStation instructions describe purchasing Shark Cards from the in-game PlayStation Store tab.
Which GTA$ transfer: purchased or earned?

The distinction matters if you are changing platforms: the rule allowing earned cash to transfer across platform families does not apply to Shark Card funds. Rockstar’s policy was last updated October 4, 2024.

Do you need to migrate your GTA Online character?
Yes. The Shark Card balance transfers as part of GTA Online profile migration; simply installing or launching the PS5 game is not the migration step. Use the Rockstar and PlayStation accounts associated with the profile you intend to move, and review the confirmation prompts before completing the process.
- Launch GTA Online on PS5 and follow the migration option from the landing page. Rockstar also documents a route through the Pause Menu for players who have already reached the game.
- Choose the eligible PS4 profile and review the information and prompts shown for that profile.
- Confirm migration only when you are ready to proceed.
Rockstar’s profile migration instructions, last updated February 24, 2026, say that profiles may be ineligible, including in cases involving a suspension or ban, or insufficient or illegitimate progress. Follow the current in-game prompts and support instructions for your account’s specific status.

What happens to your PS4 progress after migration?
Migration does not keep progress synchronized between generations. Rockstar says the original profile remains on PS4, but progress made on PS4 and PS5 after migration will not sync between the two versions. Treat migration as a transition of the profile rather than an ongoing link between separate PS4 and PS5 progress.

- Start a GTA Online session.
- Open the Pause menu and select the PlayStation Store tab.
- Choose a Shark Card and complete checkout.

Rockstar says PS4 GTAV owners can access the PS5 version through its PS5 PlayStation Store product page; if you own a physical PS4 disc, keep the disc inserted so the console can verify ownership.
