For Android users, PS Remote Play is the documented way to play PS4 games on a phone or tablet. The game continues to run on a PS4, PS4 Pro or PS5, while the Android device receives the video and sends your controls. That is streaming, not local PS4 emulation.

Local emulation would make the Android device reproduce the PS4’s hardware and run the game itself. The checked shadPS4 project describes an early emulator for Windows, Linux and macOS, but its project description does not list Android. That evidence does not establish a supported, dependable Android release, and it does not prove that every experimental or unofficial port is impossible.

Remote Play and emulation are different technologies

PS Remote Play: the console does the work

With Sony’s PS Remote Play, a compatible game runs on your PS4, PS4 Pro or PS5. The console renders the game, encodes the picture and streams it to the Android device; inputs from touch controls or a paired controller travel back to the console. Sony therefore requires a console, a compatible game, a PlayStation account, the free PS Remote Play app and an internet connection. See Sony’s PS Remote Play overview and its mobile-device setup instructions.

Your phone is a screen and control client in this arrangement. It does not contain a PS4 emulator, and closing the connection does not leave a locally installed PS4 game on the phone.

Yojaro 4Pack Silicone Suction Phone Case Mount, Silicon Adhesive Smartphones Stand Sticky, Hands-Free Phone Accessories Holder for Selfies and Videos (Black & White & Translucent & Light Pink)
  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
  • 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
  • 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
  • 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Local emulation: the Android device would run the game

An emulator attempts to reproduce a console’s processor, graphics system, memory, operating-system behavior and other hardware in software. A compatible game image would then execute locally, without a continuously reachable PS4 or PS5. That is fundamentally different from Remote Play, cloud gaming or a streaming wrapper.

The project source checked for this comparison describes shadPS4 as an early PS4 emulator for Windows, Linux and macOS. Android is not listed in that description. Consequently, the available evidence does not provide an Android installation procedure, validated phone requirements, a supported-device list or a dependable Android game-compatibility list.

Quick comparison

Question PS Remote Play on Android Local PS4 emulation on Android

Is a console required? Yes. Sony’s requirements include a PS4 or PS5 and a compatible game. Sony Not inherently for emulation, but the checked source does not establish an Android release or setup path.
Android versions documented Android 9 or later for on-screen controls; Android 10 or later for DUALSHOCK 4 over Bluetooth; Android 12 or later for DualSense. Sony No Android support is listed in the checked shadPS4 project description. Project repository
Main constraint Console availability, network quality, Android/controller compatibility and game compatibility. Whether a credible Android project exists, whether it supports your device and whether it runs your game; those points are not established by the checked project source.
What can be recommended from the documented evidence? The supported, documented route for Android play. Not a dependable Android option on the evidence available here.

What you need for PS Remote Play

Core requirements

  • A PS4, PS4 Pro or PS5 console that is configured for Remote Play and reachable through your network.
  • A compatible PlayStation game installed or otherwise available on that console.
  • The free PS Remote Play app on a compatible Android phone or tablet.
  • A PlayStation account for the app and console connection.
  • An internet connection meeting Sony’s published baseline.
  • Either Android touch controls or a controller supported by your Android version and device.

Sony’s current U.S. guidance says, “At least 5Mbps internet – we recommend at least 15Mbps for a better experience.” The 5 Mbps figure is a minimum and 15 Mbps is a recommendation, not a guarantee of a particular resolution, frame rate, latency or level of smoothness. The wording and thresholds are from Sony Interactive Entertainment’s Remote Play guidance checked in 2026; consult the current page if Sony changes them.

Android version and controls

Android software Control option documented by Sony
Android 9 or later On-screen touch controls in the Remote Play app.
Android 10 or later DUALSHOCK 4 connected over Bluetooth, subject to the device’s driver support.
Android 12 or later DualSense connected over Bluetooth, subject to the device’s driver support.

These are minimum Android versions for the listed functions, not a promise that every handset behaves identically. Manufacturers can vary Bluetooth implementation, button mapping, power management and driver support. If a controller pairs but behaves incorrectly, test the app with touch controls to separate a controller issue from a Remote Play or network issue.

Touch controls versus a physical controller

A physical controller is optional. On Android 9 or later, Sony documents on-screen controls, so you can start without buying an accessory. Touch input is convenient for menus and short sessions, but the controls occupy part of the display and may be less suitable for games that need precise analog movement or many simultaneous buttons.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Sony names the Backbone One – PlayStation Edition as compatible with Android phones running Android 10 or later. Backbone says its PlayStation Edition is the model supported by the official PS Remote Play app on Android and reiterates that a PS4, PS4 Pro or PS5 console is still required. Check the exact connector and phone-model compatibility before purchase; the accessory is optional and does not replace the console. The manufacturer’s information is at Backbone’s PlayStation Remote Play page.

How to set up PS Remote Play on an Android phone or tablet

Use Sony’s current console and mobile instructions for account-specific screens, power settings and regional differences. The practical sequence is:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Prepare the console. Make sure the PS4 or PS5 is connected to the internet, signed in to the PlayStation account you intend to use and configured to accept Remote Play. Sony’s setup page explains the console-side preparation for the applicable system.
  2. Install the app. Download the official PS Remote Play app on the compatible Android phone or tablet.
  3. Sign in. Open the app and use the same PlayStation account associated with the console.
  4. Connect to the console. Follow the app’s connection prompt and select the PS4 or PS5 it discovers. The console must be powered on or in a state that Sony permits for Remote Play; a completely unavailable or disconnected console cannot supply the stream.
  5. Choose controls. Start with the app’s touch controls, or pair a supported DUALSHOCK 4 on Android 10+ or DualSense on Android 12+ according to the controller and phone instructions.
  6. Start the game on the console. Remote Play displays the console interface, so launch the compatible game through that interface rather than expecting a local Android installation.
  7. Check the connection before troubleshooting the game. If the picture is delayed, blocky or frequently disconnected, first test the network and console connection; changing graphics settings inside the game will not fix an unstable stream.

Sony’s detailed sequence, including console configuration and mobile-data warnings, is documented at Control your PS4 console from a mobile device.

Network requirements, latency and mobile-data costs

What the 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps figures mean

Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation describe the internet connection needed for Remote Play service use. They are not laboratory performance results and do not promise a fixed image quality or response time. Latency, Wi-Fi interference, congestion, the console’s own connection and the route between locations can still affect controls and picture quality even when a speed test exceeds 15 Mbps.

For a more stable session, put the console and Android device on a reliable network, reduce competing traffic and avoid judging the service from download speed alone. A fast connection with high delay or packet loss can feel worse than a slower, cleaner connection.

Using cellular data

Remote Play can use mobile data when your phone is not on Wi-Fi, but Sony warns that this consumes your subscriber’s allowance and may create charges if you exceed it. Video streaming can use data quickly, so check your carrier’s plan, monitor usage and disable cellular access for the app if an unexpected bill would be a problem. Sony’s warning appears in the official setup guidance and the Remote Play overview.

Android TV is a separate compatibility case

Do not transfer phone requirements to a television. Sony’s Android TV support page specifies Android TV OS 12 or later, a PS4 or PS5, a PlayStation account, high-speed internet and a DualSense or DUALSHOCK 4 controller. It repeats the 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation. Those requirements apply to Android TV, not ordinary Android phones and tablets. See Sony’s PS Remote Play on Android TV guidance.

The Android TV case also lists a physical controller, whereas Sony documents touch controls for Android 9+ mobile devices. A television setup therefore has different hardware and input assumptions even though both use Remote Play.

What is actually established about PS4 emulation on Android?

The checked project evidence

The shadPS4 repository describes an early PS4 emulator targeting Windows, Linux and macOS. Its checked project description does not list Android. It also does not provide, in the material used here, validated Android phone specifications, an Android installation guide, a supported-game matrix for Android or performance figures for Android devices.

That is an evidence boundary, not a universal statement that no developer has ever produced an experimental Android build. Android-port announcements, downloadable packages and videos should be treated as unverified until a dependable project source documents the target, installation method, device requirements and game compatibility. A PC emulator running through another compatibility layer is not the same thing as native Android PS4 emulation.

Why phone specifications cannot be filled in from PC information

Even if a desktop emulator names a processor, graphics API or operating-system requirement, that information cannot be converted into a trustworthy Android minimum without a documented Android build. Mobile firmware, graphics drivers, thermal limits, memory bandwidth and emulator port quality can change the result. No validated Android minimum specification, frame-rate claim or game-success rate is established by the sources used for this comparison.

How to assess an Android-emulator claim

If you encounter an Android PS4-emulation claim, check these points before installing anything:

  • Project identity: Is there a maintained project page that explicitly names Android as a supported target, rather than a video title or download mirror?
  • Installation evidence: Are the Android package, permissions, architecture requirements and update history documented by the project itself?
  • Compatibility evidence: Does the project publish reproducible game reports, or only show an unverified clip with no device, build or settings?
  • Source safety: Is the download hosted by the project or a verifiable release channel? Avoid repackaged APKs that demand unrelated permissions or account credentials.
  • Terminology: Does the claim actually describe Remote Play, cloud streaming, a PC streamed to a phone or a compatibility layer? None of those is native local PS4 emulation.
  • Version date: Emulator projects can change quickly. Check the current release notes and support statement instead of relying on an old post.

On the evidence available here, these checks do not turn shadPS4 into a documented Android solution; they explain what would need to be established before calling any Android port dependable.

Which option fits your situation?

Choose Remote Play when you own a console

Remote Play is the practical choice if you already have a PS4, PS4 Pro or PS5 and want to use an Android screen elsewhere. It has a published app, documented Android version thresholds and a defined setup path. Its trade-offs are the need for the console, a compatible game and a sufficiently stable connection. Touch controls let you begin without extra hardware.

Do not buy a phone expecting it to run PS4 games locally

There is no documented Android support in the checked shadPS4 project from which to derive a reliable phone-shopping specification. A newer or more expensive handset is not, by itself, proof that a PS4 emulator will install or play a particular title. Treat claims of universal compatibility, guaranteed frame rates or a simple one-click Android setup as unsupported unless a credible project source supplies that evidence.

Use the distinction when searching for help

Search terms such as “PS4 Remote Play on Android,” “PS4 emulator for Android” and “Can I play PS4 games on Android?” describe different goals. Add “Remote Play” when you have a console and need streaming instructions. Add “local emulation” only when you are evaluating an emulator project that explicitly supports Android. This prevents a streaming tutorial from being mistaken for an emulator guide.

Common problems and the right first check

The app cannot find the console

Confirm that the console is online, the app is signed in to the intended PlayStation account and the console-side Remote Play configuration is complete. Recheck Sony’s setup sequence before changing controllers or reinstalling games. A phone cannot connect to a console that is powered off, disconnected or not prepared for Remote Play.

The picture is blurry or controls feel delayed

Check the connection first: compare it with Sony’s 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation, reduce competing traffic and test whether the problem follows the network. These figures do not guarantee latency, so a speed test alone cannot prove that the stream will feel responsive.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The controller will not work

Verify the Android threshold for the controller: DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth support is listed from Android 10, and DualSense support from Android 12. Driver support remains device-specific. Try the app’s touch controls; if touch works while the controller does not, focus on pairing, firmware or handset compatibility.

Cellular play is using too much data

Review the app’s network permission and your carrier allowance. Sony explicitly warns that Remote Play over mobile data counts against the subscriber’s data plan and can incur charges after the allowance is exceeded.

Bottom line

For Android today, the documented route is PS Remote Play: the PS4 or PS5 runs the game, while the phone or tablet streams it. Sony documents touch controls from Android 9, DUALSHOCK 4 Bluetooth from Android 10 and DualSense from Android 12, with at least 5 Mbps required and 15 Mbps recommended for a better experience. Local PS4 emulation is a separate proposition; the checked shadPS4 project lists Windows, Linux and macOS rather than Android, so its evidence does not support presenting Android emulation as a dependable option.
