No. A PS4 can connect to a 144 Hz monitor over HDMI, but it does not send a 144 Hz signal or make games run at 144 frames per second. The monitor can display the console’s supported signal; its higher refresh-rate ceiling does not raise the PS4’s output.
Can you connect a 144 Hz monitor to a PS4?
Yes, provided the monitor accepts the PS4’s HDMI output. Sony’s setup instructions show the connection from the console’s HDMI OUT port to the screen’s HDMI input: Sony’s PS4 setup instructions.

The monitor’s 144 Hz rating describes the maximum refresh rate it can support, not what the PS4 will send. When connected, the screen displays the console’s signal rather than adding a higher frame rate.

Frame rate is how many frames a game and console generate each second; refresh rate is how often a display refreshes its image. A faster display cannot make the PS4 generate frames faster.

Sony’s PS4 FAQ lists HDMI video standards of 480p, 720p, 1080i, and 1080p, and says frame rates up to 60 frames per second are possible. It does not list 144 Hz output. This supports the practical conclusion that a 144 Hz monitor will not unlock 144 Hz from a PS4. Sony’s PS4 FAQ dates to 2013.
“Up to 60” is not a guarantee that every game runs at 60 fps. Actual frame rate depends on the game; Sony’s wording describes a possible upper rate, not a universal performance level.

Does PS4 Pro support 144 Hz because it can reach 1440p?
No. Resolution and refresh rate are different specifications. Sony’s Portugal technical specifications describe PS4 Pro game resolution on an HD TV as ranging from 1080p to 1440p. That is a resolution statement, not evidence of a 144 Hz mode: Sony’s PS4 Pro technical specifications.
What should you check before using a 144 Hz monitor with PS4?
- HDMI input: Confirm the monitor accepts the PS4’s HDMI signal. Connect HDMI OUT on the console to HDMI IN on the display.
- Supported resolution: Check that the monitor accepts a resolution the console can output. Sony lists PS4 HDMI standards through 1080p; the PS4 Pro page’s 1440p figure concerns resolution and does not indicate 144 Hz support.
- Other devices: A 144 Hz monitor may make sense if you also use a device capable of sending a high-refresh-rate signal. For PS4 alone, do not buy one expecting 144 Hz gameplay.
- Cable: Use a working HDMI cable. A replacement is only needed if the supplied cable is missing or faulty; the cited setup guidance does not establish a need for a premium cable.
If choosing between a 60 Hz screen and a 144 Hz monitor for PS4, compare HDMI compatibility, supported resolution, image quality, size, and usefulness with your other devices. The 144 Hz rating by itself does not improve PS4 performance.
