The PS4 20th Anniversary Edition is primarily a commemorative collector’s version, not a faster PS4. Its confirmed differences are the “Original Grey” finish inspired by the first PlayStation, commemorative packaging and a worldwide production limit of 12,300 consoles. Sony’s announcement did not describe a faster processor, upgraded graphics hardware or extra game features.
For a standard European launch comparison, Sony listed the regular PS4 at a €399.99 RRP in 2013, with a 500GB hard drive and a Jet Black finish. The anniversary model was announced at €499 in December 2014. Both figures are historical regional launch prices, not current used-market valuations.

That distinction answers the most common question: the anniversary console is not a “PS4 Pro before the PS4 Pro.” Sony presented it as a special-edition PS4 whose value comes from appearance, packaging and limited production.
What the 20th Anniversary Edition actually changes
Original Grey finish
The most obvious change is the colour. Sony described the console as wearing “Original Grey,” matching the visual identity of the original PlayStation released in 1994. The standard European launch PS4 was listed in Jet Black. If a listing shows an ordinary black console and calls it a 20th Anniversary Edition, the colour mismatch is a reason to ask for better photographs and documentation.

The grey finish is not merely a generic alternate colour in Sony’s presentation. It is the design cue that connects the limited PS4 to the first PlayStation. That historical reference is why collectors generally treat the exterior as the defining feature, even though the underlying platform remains a PS4.
Commemorative packaging
Sony said the console came in a commemorative box. The packaging therefore matters when assessing a complete collector’s example: a grey console without its original presentation box may still be a genuine console, but it does not represent the same level of completeness as a boxed set. Sony’s announcement identifies the special box but does not provide a full inventory of every item in that particular bundle.
A 12,300-unit worldwide run
Sony Computer Entertainment announced a worldwide production limit of 12,300 consoles on December 3, 2014. The number reflects the original PlayStation launch date, December 3, 1994, and is the clearest objective scarcity claim attached to the console.
“Worldwide” is important: 12,300 is a global production figure, not a per-country allocation or a guarantee that every market received the same number. It also does not tell you how many complete, unused or currently functioning examples remain. Production scarcity can support collector interest, but condition, completeness and authenticity still determine what an individual listing is worth.
Is the anniversary PS4 more powerful?
There is no documented performance upgrade in Sony’s December 2014 announcement. It presents the product as a special PS4 edition and specifies its Original Grey finish, commemorative box, price and limited run; it does not announce a different CPU, GPU, memory configuration, storage interface or operating mode.

Accordingly, do not buy the anniversary model expecting a higher resolution mode, steadier frame rate, shorter loading time or broader game compatibility than a standard PS4. Those would require an announced hardware or software distinction, and the cited announcement does not provide one.
The careful conclusion is not that every internal component has been independently proven identical. Sony’s announcement is not a teardown or a complete engineering comparison. It is that Sony did not announce upgraded game hardware, so the confirmed difference is commemorative styling and scarcity rather than performance.

Sony’s European launch FAQ from October 30, 2013 provides the clearest documented baseline for the regular PS4. It lists a 500GB internal hard drive and the core connections and wireless features expected of the launch platform.

The FAQ is specifically European, so its €399.99 RRP and Jet Black launch-colour description should not be presented as a universal worldwide launch specification. It is a useful reference point for understanding what the anniversary console was based on, not evidence of a separate anniversary performance class.
What came in the standard launch box?
Sony’s European FAQ enumerates the regular launch package as a DUALSHOCK 4 wireless controller, micro-USB charging cable, mono headset, power cable and HDMI cable, alongside the console. Those details help when comparing a used standard PS4 with a purported anniversary bundle.

The anniversary announcement confirms the special appearance and commemorative packaging but does not publish a complete contents list in the same level of detail. Avoid treating the standard FAQ as a definitive inventory for every anniversary-region bundle. Regional packaging, later retailer bundles and replacement accessories can differ.
Do not confuse the console with the anniversary controller
Sony separately announced a 20th Anniversary DUALSHOCK 4 controller on June 16, 2015. It uses Original Grey styling and the original coloured PlayStation family logo. That announcement concerns an accessory, not proof that the controller was included with every 20th Anniversary Edition console.
When a seller claims to have a complete anniversary set, verify the contents against photographs of the actual box and the listing’s itemized description. A separately purchased anniversary controller can be paired with a standard PS4, while a console bundle may contain a regular controller or a region-specific configuration. The controller’s appearance alone cannot establish that the console itself is the limited 12,300-unit edition.

Subtracting the two published figures gives a nominal €99.01 difference. That arithmetic should not be mistaken for a current premium. The products were announced more than a year apart, the standard figure is a European RRP, and neither number describes today’s used market.
Current asking prices can vary with condition, box completeness, included accessories, region, seller confidence and evidence of authenticity. The cited Sony material does not establish a current resale average, a guaranteed minimum value or present availability. A high asking price is therefore a seller’s position, not an official valuation.

How to assess a listing today
If you are considering a used console, treat the purchase as a collectible verification exercise as well as a hardware purchase. These checks do not replace an inspection or a return policy, but they separate the documented edition characteristics from unsupported claims.
- Confirm the exterior. Look for the Original Grey console rather than a standard Jet Black shell. Request clear, well-lit photographs of the entire unit, not only a stock image.
- Check the packaging. Ask whether the commemorative box is included and whether the photographs show the actual box. A generic PS4 carton is not evidence of the anniversary packaging.
- Read the contents description. Identify which controller, cables and headset are included. Do not assume that a 20th Anniversary DUALSHOCK 4 is part of every console bundle.
- Separate edition claims from condition claims. “Limited to 12,300” describes the production run; it does not certify that a particular used unit is complete, unmodified or fully functional.
- Check the region and listing date. Sony’s standard comparison figures are European and historical. Ask where the unit was originally sold and whether the seller is quoting a current price or repeating the 2014 announcement price.
- Request evidence before paying a premium. Photos of the console, box, controller and accessories are more useful than a description that only repeats “rare” or “limited.” If the seller cannot show the claimed special finish or packaging, treat the edition claim as unverified.
- Test the ordinary PS4 functions. Confirm that the console powers on, displays through HDMI, reads or downloads games as applicable, connects to the network and accepts controller input. Limited status does not exempt a unit from normal hardware wear.
These steps are especially important because the official announcements establish design and production facts, not the condition, authenticity or present inventory of individual second-hand examples.

Choose the anniversary edition for a PlayStation collector
The anniversary model is the logical choice if your priority is the original-PlayStation visual connection, the commemorative box and the documented 12,300-unit worldwide run. Those are the attributes Sony actually promoted. Pay attention to completeness and condition because a scarce console can still be a poor collectible if the set is damaged, missing key items or impossible to authenticate.
Choose a standard PS4 for ordinary PS4 gaming
If you want to play the same PS4 software and do not care about the commemorative finish, a standard model addresses the practical gaming requirement without relying on collector scarcity. The anniversary announcement does not identify a performance advantage, so the limited model should not be selected on the assumption that games run better on it.

Consider the standard model when replacement parts matter
A conventional PS4 can be easier to evaluate as a used machine because its launch specifications and package baseline are well documented in Sony’s FAQ. The FAQ also describes replacement of the internal drive within stated size and thickness limits. That does not make every standard unit interchangeable, but it provides a clearer reference for routine ownership than the anniversary announcement’s intentionally brief collector-focused description.

Buy the anniversary model only when the premium is understandable
A premium can be rational for a collector who values the finish, box and scarcity. It is harder to justify if the seller offers only a black console, a generic box or an unsupported claim that the unit is faster. Compare the actual condition and contents of the listing, not just the edition name in its headline.
Common misconceptions
“It is a special edition, so it must have upgraded internals.”
Special-edition status does not automatically mean a new processor or graphics system. In this case, Sony’s announcement identifies commemorative design and limited production without announcing upgraded game hardware.
“The €499 price tells me what one is worth now.”
It does not. €499 was Sony’s announced price in December 2014. A present-day used price depends on the individual unit and market conditions, none of which are established by that announcement.
“Any grey PS4 is the anniversary model.”
Colour alone is not enough to establish a complete limited-edition set. Check the commemorative packaging, listing evidence and the specific console being sold.
“Every anniversary console included the anniversary controller.”
Sony announced the 20th Anniversary DUALSHOCK 4 separately in June 2015. Verify the actual bundle rather than inferring its contents from the accessory announcement.
What the official record establishes—and what it does not
The official record establishes a grey, commemoratively packaged PS4, a worldwide run of 12,300 units and a €499 announcement price. Sony’s European launch FAQ establishes the regular PS4’s Jet Black launch colour, €399.99 RRP, 500GB drive and listed accessories and connections.
It does not establish a current resale average, current stock, the authenticity of a particular marketplace listing or a universal box inventory for every region. It also does not provide a complete engineering teardown proving that every internal component is identical. Keeping those limits attached to the claims prevents a cosmetic collector’s edition from being misrepresented as a faster console or a guaranteed investment.

For either one, judge a used listing by the actual console, condition, region and included items rather than by an old launch price or an unverified claim of extra power.
