Sony says the PlayStation Store on PS3 and PS Vita will close to new purchases in July 2027 in most countries. Some PS3 Stores close sooner. Games you already own stay playable, and Sony says you can keep re-downloading them for the “foreseeable future.” That phrase is not a fixed end date, and it does not promise that every game’s online features will keep working.
When does your Store close?
July 2027 is not a universal date. Sony’s July 1, 2026 announcement sets this schedule:
| # | Preview | Product | Price | |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 |
|
LittleBigPlanet - PlayStation Vita | $34.99 | Buy on Amazon |
| 2 |
|
LEGO: Marvel - PlayStation Vita | $18.30 | Buy on Amazon |
| 3 |
|
Uncharted: Golden Abyss | $39.98 | Buy on Amazon |

| Region | What closes | When |
|---|---|---|
| Mexico, Honduras, Nicaragua | PS3 Store | Starting August 2026 |
| Additional Latin American and Middle Eastern countries | PS3 Store | Beginning in late 2026 |
| All other countries | PS3 Store and PS Vita Store | July 2027 |
Sony’s US support notice uses the broader wording “Starting July 2027.” Sony’s support page says it may be updated periodically, so check your regional PlayStation notice for local changes. Sony has not given an exact day within July 2027 in the material available here.
Recommended Free Tools
Sony’s stated reason is that the old devices cannot support the commerce, payment and security updates the Store now needs. Sid Shuman, Senior Director of Content Communications at Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote: “As the PlayStation Store continues to evolve to support modern commerce systems, including updated payment processing standards, PS3 and PS Vita are no longer able to support these updates at the level required.”

What happens to games you already own?
Playing them
Sony says you can keep playing content you already own, subject to each game’s existing online features and service availability. The Store closure itself is not an announced shutdown of every game or server. Multiplayer, leaderboards and similar features depend on each game’s own services, which Sony has not promised to keep running forever.
Downloading them again
Previously purchased content stays downloadable for the “foreseeable future.” Sony sets no calendar limit. Downloading your library to local storage before closure is sensible, but Sony’s current wording does not make it a requirement for keeping access.
PlayStation Plus
Sony’s notice says existing subscriptions are not affected by the earlier changes it lists, and that already purchased content remains accessible. It does not guarantee any future catalog benefit.

Transfers between PS3 and Vita
Since May 11, 2022, content can no longer be transferred from PS3 to PS Vita. Direct downloads to either device still work, and Sony’s page points to a PC transfer route.
How to buy what you still want
New purchases of games, add-ons and other content on the device stop once its Store closes. Since October 27, 2021, you cannot pay with a credit or debit card or PayPal directly on a PS3 or Vita. You must have wallet funds first. Sony lists these ways to add funds: a desktop computer, a mobile device, a PS4 or a PS5. You can redeem a PlayStation Store gift card or use another supported payment option.
- Confirm your region’s closure timing in Sony’s current notice.
- List the games, add-ons and DLC you still want, especially digital-only titles.
- Add enough wallet funds through one of the routes above.
- Buy on the device before its Store closes.
- Download the purchases you want stored locally.
Will PS3 and Vita games move to the modern PlayStation Store?
Sony’s announcement makes no such promise. One commenter on the announcement wrote, “At least move the PS3 and PS Vita games to the modern PS Store so they can still be bought!” That is a reader’s wish, not a plan. For a digital-only title, the closing Store may be the last official place to buy it.
Rank #3
- Versatile gameplay for the Uncharted fan: Traditional (Dualstick Analog/button) or interactive (NGP features) allows players to choose the method that compliments their playing style.
- Through utilizing the technology of the OLED screen, Uncharted: Golden Abyss delivers the signature Uncharted cinematic experience on-the-go.
- Epic single player campaign that takes players through richly detailed realistic environments and undiscovered lands.
- Experience the adventure of uniquely acrobatic Uncharted gameplay, optimized with PlayStation Vita controls
- Touch, and tap the screen to swing, jump, and traverse non-continuous game sections, like crumbling bridges and river crossings
Discs as a partial alternative
Sony has separately said it will end production of discs for new PlayStation games starting January 2028. It added that this does not affect games already released, or releasing before then, in disc format. So PS3 games on disc remain a workable route for titles that had a disc release. Availability varies by title. Discs do not help with digital-only games, add-ons or other Store content, and they do not keep a game’s online services running.
Why this may feel like a repeat
In April 2021, Sony reversed an earlier plan to close the PS3 and Vita Stores. Jim Ryan, then President and CEO of Sony Interactive Entertainment, wrote: “Upon further reflection, however, it’s clear that we made the wrong decision here. So today I’m happy to say that we will be keeping the PlayStation Store operational for PS3 and PS Vita devices.” The 2026 announcement replaces that policy with a new closure schedule. Sony cites payment-processing requirements this time, and nothing in the announcement suggests a second reversal.
