Short answer: PS2 discs work on an original PS2 and on only certain PS3 models. A PS5 cannot read PS3 discs directly. For PS3 games on newer hardware, your practical alternatives are a verified PC emulator or cloud streaming of an eligible catalog title. The right choice depends on the exact game, your console’s full model number and region, your computer, and whether the title is currently offered for streaming.

Start with the exact game and the format you own
Compatibility is not determined by the words “PS2,” “PS3,” or “PlayStation” alone. First identify whether you have a PS2-format disc, a PS3-format disc, or a digital license. Then record the game’s region and edition. A PS3 model that accepts most PS2-format discs may still reject a particular title or run it differently from an original PS2. A PS5 has no direct PS3-disc path, while a cloud catalog may include one game but not another.

- PS2 disc: native playback is guaranteed only by compatible PS2 hardware; selected PS3 revisions can play most PS2-format discs.
- PS3 disc: PS5 consoles do not support these discs. You need a PS3, a suitable computer emulator, or an eligible streaming listing.
- Digital or catalog access: check the current platform listing, country and subscription tier rather than assuming that a physical release is also streamable.
Used-console listings are especially risky when they say only “backward-compatible PS3.” The complete model code and sales region matter more than the console’s storage size or color.

Why “a PS3” is not a sufficient specification
PS3 backward compatibility was limited to particular hardware revisions and regional variants. Sony’s disc guide lists early model families such as CECHA and CECHB, along with certain CECHE versions, among systems able to play most PS2-format discs. The exact list differs by sales region and revision, so a seller’s generic description is not enough.
How to verify a console before buying or inserting a disc
- Turn the PS3 over or inspect the original label and write down the complete CECH model code, including its final letters and numbers.
- Identify the region in which that model was sold. Compare the code with Sony’s regional backward-compatibility table, not with a forum list or a photograph of a similar-looking system.
- Check the specific game against Sony’s compatibility information where available. “Most PS2-format discs” is not the same as every disc.
- Ask a used seller for a clear photo of the model label and a demonstration that the optical drive reads a disc. A listing can be mislabeled, modified or faulty.
What to expect when a title does run
Sony cautions that backward-compatible discs can perform differently from the same software on an original PS2, and some games may not perform properly at all. The PS3’s original-format PlayStation and PS2 settings include upscaling options that alter the displayed output. Upscaling changes presentation; it does not turn the game into a remaster or prove universal compatibility. If a title has timing, texture, audio or save problems on a PS3, an original PS2 is the more predictable native route.
Can a PS5 play PS3 discs?
No. Sony’s current support guidance says PS5 consoles do not support PS3 discs. You cannot insert a PS3 Blu-ray and have the PS5 convert it into a playable PS5 title.

What can work on a PS5 instead
A PS3 game may be available through PlayStation Plus Premium cloud streaming, or it may have a separate PS4/PS5 digital release. Those are different products from reading your original disc. Check the exact game in the current PlayStation catalog and in the Cloud Streaming Game Finder for your country. Catalog availability changes over time, titles can be removed, and not every game is streamable.
Emulating PS2 games with PCSX2
PCSX2 is designed to emulate the PlayStation 2 on a computer. Its project FAQ notes that accurately reproducing the PS2’s complex hardware at full speed can require substantial PC capability. There is no single “PCSX2 performance” result: a game that runs cleanly on one machine or configuration may need different settings on another.
A sensible PS2 emulation check
- Read the current PCSX2 documentation for supported operating systems, installation requirements and configuration changes.
- Check the exact game rather than relying on a general statement that PS2 emulation works. Look for title-specific notes about graphics, audio, timing or known workarounds.
- Compare your computer with the project’s current requirements. CPU behavior, graphics hardware, drivers and thermal limits all affect sustained speed.
- Start with conservative settings, then change one option at a time if the title shows a documented issue. Keep a known-good configuration so you can undo a change.

Emulating PS3 games with RPCS3
RPCS3 maintains a living compatibility list for PS3 games. Its status entries and requirements change as the project develops, so an aggregate count or a search result snapshot cannot answer whether your particular title is playable on your computer.
How to check a PS3 title
- Open the current RPCS3 compatibility list and search for the exact game name, region and release where entries distinguish them.
- Read the status, notes and reported issues for that entry. A game marked playable by the project is not a promise of identical results on every CPU, GPU, driver or operating system.
- Review the project’s current hardware and software requirements before installing. PS3 emulation is demanding, and settings that help one title can harm another.
- Recheck the entry after major emulator updates. Compatibility labels, recommended settings and known issues are subject to change.
Do not use “RPCS3 is compatible with PS3” as a blanket claim. The useful question is whether the current entry for your game, on your computer, supports the features and stability you need.
Streaming PS3 Classics with PlayStation Plus Premium
What the service actually provides
The US PlayStation Plus page lists Classics Catalog access and Cloud Streaming as Premium benefits. It describes a wide selection of PS3 Classics as available through streaming only. That means the game is executed on Sony’s servers and sent to your supported device; it does not make a PS3 disc readable by a PS5 and does not create a universal remote-access system for discs you own.
Checks to make before subscribing
- Search the current Cloud Streaming Game Finder for the exact title.
- Confirm that the listing applies to your country and that your account has the Premium tier. Catalogs and plans vary by region and can change over time.
- Check whether the game’s required language, save behavior and other features meet your needs. Sony’s page says DLC and add-ons are not supported when streaming a title.
- Measure the connection you will actually use. Sony states a minimum of 5 Mbps and 15 Mbps for 1080p on its US service page. These are stated service thresholds, not a measured guarantee against household Wi‑Fi congestion, latency or packet loss.
- Use a wired connection or a strong, uncongested Wi‑Fi link where possible, then test the title during the hours you normally play. A fast speed-test number alone does not establish consistent streaming quality.
Streaming is convenient when the catalog contains your game and you accept subscription and internet dependence. It is not a preservation method for every disc, and a title can leave the catalog even after you have played it.

You own PS2 discs and want the least software complexity
Use an original PS2 if you want the broadest native expectation. A selected, correctly identified PS3 model can reduce the number of boxes under your television, but verify both the regional model and the individual title first.

You own PS3 discs
Keep a working PS3 for direct disc use; a PS5 will not substitute for it. If your goal is to play on a computer, check the game’s current RPCS3 entry and your machine’s requirements before assuming that emulation will replace the console.
You do not own a compatible console
Look for the exact title in the current Premium streaming catalog. If it is absent, unavailable in your region or unsuitable because you need DLC, streaming will not solve the problem; an original console or verified emulator route is more appropriate.
You are buying a used backward-compatible PS3
- Require the full CECH code and regional version in writing.
- Confirm that the optical drive reads a PS2-format disc.
- Ask about prior repairs, modifications, overheating and controller or cable requirements.
- Price the risk of returns and testing. Sony’s compatibility caveats still apply even when the model family is listed correctly.

“Every PS3 plays PS2 games.”
Stop and check the model code and region. If the console is not in Sony’s listed families, use an original PS2 or another verified route instead of risking a disc or a misleading purchase.
“The PS5 should read my PS3 disc because it plays PS4 games.”
It will not. Use a PS3, check for a separate modern release, or verify a streaming listing.

Reopen the current PCSX2 or RPCS3 documentation, match the exact title and review hardware-specific notes. Update drivers or emulator builds only after recording the configuration that worked.
“A speed test proves cloud streaming will be perfect.”
Meet Sony’s stated minimum, then test on the device and network you will use. If latency, congestion or image quality remains unacceptable, choose local hardware or emulation.

Can I use a PS2 disc in any PS3 Slim or Super Slim?
No. Sony’s backward-compatibility tables identify particular model families and regions, and the later form factors are not automatically compatible. Check the complete CECH code and the game before buying.
