Choose PlayStation Portal if your main goal is simple, dedicated access to games installed on your PS5. It is designed around Remote Play, includes controls shaped like a DualSense controller, and requires very little configuration after pairing. Choose the Steam Deck OLED if you also want a portable Steam gaming PC and are comfortable installing and configuring the community application Chiaki-ng for PS5 streaming.
Neither device makes PS5 games run locally. In both cases, the game is rendered by a PS5 and streamed over a network. The screen refresh rate, panel type, or handheld specifications do not by themselves prove lower input lag or a more stable stream; Sony says Remote Play quality varies with the network environment.

What each handheld actually does
PlayStation Portal: a focused PS5 companion
PlayStation Portal is a purpose-built Remote Play handheld. It connects to a paired PS5 and displays compatible games installed on that console over Wi-Fi. The controls resemble a split DualSense, and supported games can use features such as haptic feedback and adaptive triggers.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Portal is therefore best understood as an accessory for an existing PS5, not as a second console. The PS5 remains responsible for running the game, saving progress and sending the video and audio stream. Portal supplies the screen, controls and network connection. You cannot take it somewhere and play PS5 software without access to a reachable PS5 unless you use Portal’s separate cloud-streaming feature.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Portal also supports a separate cloud-streaming mode for eligible games. That feature is not the same as Remote Play from your own console: it requires PlayStation Plus Premium, is limited by country and title eligibility, and can operate while your PS5 is off or being used by another account. Ordinary Remote Play from your PS5 does not itself require PlayStation Plus.
Steam Deck OLED: a handheld PC with PS5 streaming as one use
Steam Deck OLED runs SteamOS and is primarily a portable PC for Steam games. PS5 access is possible by installing Chiaki-ng, an independently maintained Remote Play client, then configuring the Deck’s controls and connection. This is not native PS5 software and should not be described as Sony-supported Steam Deck functionality.
Chiaki-ng provides mappings for the Deck’s sticks, trackpads, gyro and haptics, and documents DualSense input options. The setup gives you much broader control over the handheld, but it also introduces software installation, account pairing and troubleshooting that Portal users generally avoid.
Recommended Free Tools
The Deck can also run locally installed PC games and desktop applications when you are away from the PS5. That versatility is its main reason to buy it for this comparison. If PS5 Remote Play is the only planned use, the extra operating-system and client configuration may offer little practical benefit.
Specifications that matter for this decision
| Decision axis | PlayStation Portal | Steam Deck OLED |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Dedicated PS5 Remote Play device; also supports eligible Portal cloud streaming | SteamOS handheld PC; PS5 streaming is added through Chiaki-ng |
| Display | 8-inch LCD, 1920 × 1080, up to 60 frames per second capability | 7.4-inch HDR OLED, 1280 × 800, refresh rate up to 90 Hz |
| Controls | DualSense-style controls; compatible games may use haptics and adaptive triggers | Full-size sticks, trackpads, gyro and configurable controls; Chiaki-ng documents Deck gyro and haptic mappings |
| Operating scope | PS5 Remote Play and eligible cloud streaming | Steam games, desktop and other PC uses, plus configured PS5 streaming |
| Battery information | A comparable PS5-streaming runtime is not established by the cited specifications | 50 Wh battery; Valve estimates 3–12 hours of general gameplay, not a measured PS5-streaming runtime |
| Network requirement | Broadband with at least 5 Mbps; Sony recommends at least 15 Mbps | Remote Play is likewise dependent on network conditions; the Deck does not remove streaming latency |
The Portal’s 1080p panel has more vertical pixels than the Deck OLED’s 800-pixel display, while the Deck offers HDR and a refresh rate of up to 90 Hz. Those are display specifications, not a controlled comparison of image quality, responsiveness or stream stability. No official source establishes a winner for those performance measures.
The 90 Hz ceiling on the Deck does not make a PS5 stream 90 frames per second. The source console, Remote Play software and network path still determine what arrives. Likewise, Portal’s stated capability of up to 60 frames per second is not a promise that every game or connection will deliver that rate.
Which is easier to set up?
Portal setup
Portal is the straightforward choice when you want a console-like process:
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- Make sure the PS5 is connected to the internet and signed in to the account you will use.
- On the PS5, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network if you want Portal to wake the console from Rest Mode.
- Connect the PS5 to your router with Ethernet when possible. Sony recommends 5 GHz Wi-Fi for Portal.
- Turn on Portal, follow its pairing prompts, and press the on-screen connection button for the paired PS5.
The PS5 must be powered on or in Rest Mode and paired with Portal. A completely shut-down console cannot be awakened through Remote Play. If several people use the console, confirm that Portal is paired with the intended account and console before leaving home.
Steam Deck OLED setup
The Deck requires an additional software layer:
- Enable Remote Play on the PS5 using the same Settings > System > Remote Play path.
- Install Chiaki-ng using the project’s current SteamOS instructions. The application is community software, so its menus and installation method can change independently of Sony’s PS5 firmware.
- Pair Chiaki-ng with the PS5 account and console. The client will require the account and console information described in its documentation.
- Choose the appropriate PS5 profile and map the Deck’s controls. Chiaki-ng documents layouts for sticks, trackpads, gyro, haptics and DualSense input.
- Test the connection near the router before relying on it away from home. Resolve pairing, audio or control issues while you still have access to the PS5.
Do not treat this as a one-button replacement for Portal. SteamOS updates, Chiaki-ng updates and PS5 software changes can each affect the setup. The benefit is flexibility: you can adjust controls and use the same handheld for Steam and desktop applications.

A sensible first test is to launch a game from the same room as the router, verify every button, check audio output and then repeat the test from the place where you expect to play. This separates a basic configuration error from a problem caused by distance or network conditions. Keep the PS5 available during initial pairing because the client may need information from the console or account.
Network requirements and how to improve the connection
Sony lists 5 Mbps as the minimum broadband speed for Portal Remote Play and recommends at least 15 Mbps. These figures are thresholds, not guarantees. Sony also states that Remote Play quality and connectivity vary with the network environment.

- Use Ethernet for the PS5: A wired console connection removes one wireless hop and is Sony’s preferred arrangement when available.
- Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the handheld: It can provide more capacity at short range, although walls, distance and local interference still matter.
- Reduce congestion: Pause large downloads and other high-bandwidth activity on the home network while playing.
- Check the complete path: Away-from-home play depends on the internet connection at the PS5 and the connection at the handheld’s location, not only the speed test beside one device.
- Use Rest Mode deliberately: For Portal to wake the PS5, both network-related Rest Mode options must be enabled and the console must remain in Rest Mode rather than fully powered off.
- Test the actual playing location: A strong signal beside the router says little about performance in a bedroom, hotel or another floor of the house.
The same network limits apply to Chiaki-ng on Steam Deck. A faster Wi-Fi radio or a 90 Hz screen cannot eliminate delay introduced by the network, the PS5’s encoding, or congestion. Neither handheld is a substitute for a reliable connection, and neither should be selected on the assumption that it removes streaming latency.
Do you need PlayStation Plus?
Remote Play from your own PS5
No PlayStation Plus subscription is required simply to stream games installed on your PS5 to Portal or to Chiaki-ng. If a particular game requires a subscription for its own online multiplayer, that separate requirement still applies. Remote Play and online multiplayer are different services, so check the game’s listing when multiplayer access matters.
Portal cloud streaming
Portal’s cloud-streaming option is a different service. It requires PlayStation Plus Premium, and availability depends on your country or region and on whether a title is eligible. Because the game runs in the cloud rather than on your PS5, your console can be off or occupied by another account. Do not use the cloud-streaming requirement as evidence that ordinary Remote Play needs Plus.
Controls, audio and comfort
Portal’s DualSense-style layout
Portal’s controls are integrated into the device and closely follow the DualSense arrangement. In compatible games, haptics and adaptive triggers can be available through Remote Play. That makes it the closest of these two options to picking up a familiar PS5 controller with a built-in screen.

Those choices cover quiet personal play, a wired setup and casual listening without requiring an additional console accessory.
Deck controls and Chiaki-ng mappings
Steam Deck OLED has full-size analog sticks, rear controls, trackpads and a gyroscope in addition to its standard buttons. Chiaki-ng’s documentation covers mapping those inputs and configuring haptic behavior. Its described DualSense setup notes that DualSense haptics require a USB connection, while Deck controller haptics can be mapped through the handheld’s own controls. Adaptive-trigger support is documented for a connected DualSense controller rather than being an inherent feature of the Deck’s triggers.
The practical trade-off is control depth versus simplicity. Portal gives you a known console layout with fewer decisions. Deck lets you tailor layouts for unusual games or accessibility needs, but every custom mapping is another setting to maintain. A layout that works well for a strategy game may be less suitable for a fast action title, so expect occasional per-game adjustments.

Battery, display and portability expectations
Valve specifies a 50 Wh battery for Steam Deck OLED and estimates 3–12 hours of general gameplay. That is a broad device-level estimate, not a measured PS5 Remote Play runtime. Streaming workload, display brightness, wireless conditions and the particular game can all affect actual use. No comparable official PS5-streaming battery figure establishes a winner between the two handhelds.

If you play in varied locations, the availability and quality of Wi-Fi will usually be more important than panel technology.
Which games and features are incompatible?
Remote Play works with compatible PS5 games installed on the console. Sony notes that games requiring PlayStation VR hardware or additional peripherals may be incompatible. A title that depends on a camera, specialized instrument or another accessory should be checked before you plan to play it remotely.
Portal cloud streaming has its own catalog and regional eligibility rules. A game being playable from your PS5 does not automatically mean it is available through the cloud-streaming catalog. Conversely, cloud availability does not change the compatibility rules for ordinary Remote Play.
Choose by your actual use case
Choose Portal when…
- Your PS5 is the main gaming system and you want to play it away from the television.
- You want the least configuration after the console’s Remote Play settings are enabled.
- You value an integrated DualSense-style layout, including supported haptics and adaptive triggers.
- You do not need Steam, desktop software or a general-purpose portable PC.
- You understand that it is a network client rather than a device that runs PS5 games locally.
- You want built-in options for PlayStation Link, wired 3.5 mm audio or speakers.
Choose Steam Deck OLED when…
- You want one handheld for Steam games, PS5 streaming and broader PC use.
- You are comfortable installing Chiaki-ng and repeating setup work when software changes.
- You want trackpads, gyro, rear controls or custom mappings that Portal does not provide.
- You prefer an HDR OLED display and up-to-90-Hz refresh capability, while accepting that these specifications do not prove lower Remote Play latency.
- You want the option to play locally installed PC games when the PS5 or network is unavailable.
- You are willing to troubleshoot community software rather than use a dedicated Sony interface.
Consider both only if…
You are deciding between a specialized accessory and a general-purpose computer. Buying the Deck for PS5 streaming alone means accepting more setup without evidence of better latency or stability. Buying Portal while expecting Steam games or desktop applications will leave those needs unmet. The sensible choice depends on whether the second device’s broader PC function will be used often enough to justify the added complexity.
Common mistakes and fixes
“Portal will work even when my PS5 is fully off”
It will not. Put the PS5 in Rest Mode, enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network, and keep Remote Play enabled. A full shutdown prevents network wake-up.
“The 15 Mbps recommendation guarantees smooth play”
It does not. The recommendation concerns available broadband capacity; latency, packet loss, Wi-Fi interference and congestion can still degrade the stream. Wire the PS5, use 5 GHz Wi-Fi near the handheld and test from the location where you intend to play.
“Steam Deck runs PS5 games natively”
It does not in this setup. Chiaki-ng receives a Remote Play stream generated by your PS5. The Deck’s processor is not running the PS5 game code.
“I need PlayStation Plus to use Remote Play”
You do not need Plus for ordinary streaming from your own PS5. Check the game’s online-multiplayer requirement separately. Plus Premium applies to Portal’s distinct cloud-streaming feature.

“A higher refresh rate means the Deck has less input lag”
Refresh rate describes how often the display can update; it does not measure the complete network-to-controller response. No controlled comparison establishes a latency advantage for either handheld.
“Every PS5 game will work remotely”
Games that require VR hardware or other peripherals may be incompatible. Confirm the game’s requirements before relying on Remote Play.
“A speed test at home proves away-from-home play will work”
It does not. Remote Play uses the connection at the PS5 and the connection where the handheld is being used. Test both ends, and remember that hotel, public or congested networks may behave differently from your home connection.
“Cloud streaming and Remote Play are interchangeable”
They are not. Remote Play streams from your own PS5 and does not itself require Plus. Portal cloud streaming uses an eligible cloud catalog, requires Premium and can function while the console is off or in use by another account.

Can I use Steam Deck OLED for PS5 Remote Play without Chiaki-ng?
In this comparison, PS5 streaming on the Deck is performed through Chiaki-ng. SteamOS does not provide the same dedicated Portal workflow, so installing and configuring the client is part of the Deck approach.
Does Portal need my PS5 turned on?
The PS5 must be powered on or in Rest Mode. To wake it remotely, enable Remote Play, keep the console connected to the internet and enable both relevant Rest Mode network options. A fully shut-down PS5 cannot be awakened this way.
Which device has the better screen?
They make different trade-offs. Portal has an 8-inch 1080p LCD capable of up to 60 fps, while Steam Deck OLED has a 7.4-inch 1280×800 HDR OLED panel with refresh up to 90 Hz. Those specifications alone do not establish better Remote Play image quality or responsiveness.
Can either handheld play PS5 games without a network?
No. Portal depends on a network connection to the PS5 or its separate cloud service. Chiaki-ng also receives a network stream. The Deck can play locally installed PC games offline, but that does not make PS5 games local.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Do adaptive triggers work on Steam Deck?
Adaptive-trigger support is documented for a connected DualSense controller in the described Chiaki-ng setup, not as an inherent feature of the Deck’s own triggers. Portal integrates DualSense-style controls, and compatible games may use adaptive triggers through Remote Play.

Is Steam Deck OLED guaranteed to have less lag because it supports 90 Hz?
No. Refresh rate is only one display specification. Network delay, packet loss, congestion and console encoding affect the complete response, and no controlled comparison establishes a latency winner.
Bottom line
For a PS5 owner who mainly wants a handheld screen and DualSense-style controls, PlayStation Portal is the direct, low-maintenance choice. For someone who also wants a SteamOS gaming PC and accepts community-software configuration, Steam Deck OLED is the more versatile device. Both stream PS5 games over a network, so choose based on purpose and setup tolerance—not on unsupported assumptions about latency, stability or battery life.
