Choose PlayStation Portal if you want a dedicated handheld with integrated DualSense-style controls for PS5 Remote Play and you normally have dependable Wi‑Fi. Choose a phone or tablet if you already own a compatible device, need PS4 as well as PS5 support, or want the option of using mobile data. In both cases, the game is streamed from your console, so network conditions and the game itself determine responsiveness and image stability.

The decision in one minute

PlayStation Portal and a phone or tablet running the PS Remote Play app do the same fundamental job: they show and control a game running on a PlayStation console over a network. The important differences are the console models they support, how you hold and control the game, and whether you can connect through cellular data.

  • Pick Portal when you own a PS5, want controls that feel like a normal handheld immediately, prefer a larger dedicated screen, and can provide stable Wi‑Fi.
  • Pick a phone or tablet when you already have suitable hardware, want PS4 compatibility, need more freedom to use mobile or public networks, or do not want another dedicated device.
  • Either option can work well on a strong connection and struggle on a congested or unstable one. Neither removes streaming latency, and Sony does not promise identical performance in every game or location.

The figures below are Sony Interactive Entertainment recommendations and specifications from its official support and product pages, not independent latency tests or a head-to-head laboratory benchmark.

What each option actually is

PlayStation Portal

Portal is a dedicated Remote Play handheld. Its two halves provide physical sticks, buttons and triggers similar to a DualSense controller, with an 8-inch HD screen between them. The touchscreen can provide mapped touch-pad functions when a game uses the controller touch pad. Audio can come from the built-in speakers, a wired headset or earbuds connected to the 3.5 mm jack, or compatible wireless devices using PlayStation Link, including PULSE Explore and PULSE Elite.

PS Portal + Case + Charging Station
  • Put Your PS5 in the Palm of Your Hand - PlayStation Portal Remote Player gives you access to the games on your PS5 over your home Wi-Fi*, letting you jump right into gaming without needing to play on a TV.
  • Play Your Game Collection - PlayStation Portal Remote Player can play compatible games you have installed on your PS5 console, including your favorite games for PS5 and PS4.**
  • Store and Protect – Sturdy outer shell, molded interior and dual zipper pulls provides protection for the PlayStation Portal remote player
  • Charging Cable Pass-through – Allows a charging cable to be plugged into the PS Portal while stored inside the case
  • Charge and Display – Charge the PlayStation Portal remote player and display it next to your PlayStation5 console

Portal is a screen-and-controller endpoint, not a standalone console. The PS5 supplies the game, saves and processing. A PlayStation account and an internet-connected PS5 are therefore part of the requirement.

Phone or tablet Remote Play

A supported Android phone, Android tablet, iPhone or iPad runs Sony’s PS Remote Play app. The app can connect to either a PS5 or a PS4. You can use on-screen controls, or pair a supported PlayStation controller. A phone or tablet therefore gives you more device choices, but the control experience depends on the screen and whichever controller you bring.

Compatibility at a glance

Question PlayStation Portal Phone or tablet with PS Remote Play
Console supported PS5 only PS5 or PS4
PlayStation account Required; use the account associated with the PS5 Required; sign in to the account used by the console

Screen Built-in 8-inch HD display Your phone or tablet display; size and resolution depend on that device
Network choices Wi‑Fi connection Wi‑Fi, and mobile data where the device, carrier and app settings permit
Audio choices Built-in speakers, 3.5 mm wired audio, or compatible PlayStation Link devices Audio depends on the phone or tablet and any connected headset or controller
VR and extra-peripheral games Not supported when a VR headset or unsupported peripheral is required Not supported when a VR headset or unsupported peripheral is required
Games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership Not supported through Remote Play Not supported through Remote Play

The PS Plus Premium exclusion concerns games that must be streamed from Sony’s cloud service. It is separate from Remote Play. Remote Play itself does not require a PS Plus membership, although a particular game’s online multiplayer may require the membership level specified by that game.

Network requirements and the setup that matters most

Portal bandwidth guidance

Sony lists broadband Wi‑Fi of at least 5 Mbps for Portal and recommends at least 15 Mbps for a better experience. These are product recommendations, not a guarantee of a particular frame rate, resolution or latency. A fast internet plan can still perform poorly if the local Wi‑Fi is crowded, the console is connected over a weak wireless link, or the route between your home and the device is unstable.

Sony’s preferred arrangement is to connect the PS5 to the internet by Ethernet whenever possible and connect Portal to a 5 GHz Wi‑Fi network. If the PS5 also uses Wi‑Fi, Sony advises placing both devices on the same Wi‑Fi network. If your router’s band-steering feature repeatedly moves Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, Sony advises disabling band steering so the handheld remains on the intended band.

Mobile-device bandwidth guidance

For mobile Remote Play, Sony recommends 5 Mbps upload and 5 Mbps download as a standard baseline and at least 15 Mbps for best performance. The app can use mobile data when you enable that option, but the feature’s availability depends on the device, carrier and network conditions.

Sony explicitly warns that Remote Play uses much more data than most video-streaming services. A session over cellular data can therefore consume a substantial part of a capped plan, and roaming charges or carrier restrictions can add an unexpected cost. Treat mobile data as a flexibility option, not as a promise of unlimited play away from home.

The console settings both options share

The PS5 must be online, signed in to the same PlayStation account you use on the Remote Play device, and configured for Remote Play. To wake it from Rest Mode, Sony says to enable Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network. If those options are not enabled, a remote device may be unable to wake the console after it enters Rest Mode.

How to set up PlayStation Portal

  1. Prepare the PS5. On the console, sign in to the PlayStation account you intend to use, enable Remote Play, and confirm that the PS5 has an internet connection.
  2. Configure Rest Mode if you need remote wake-up. Turn on Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network in the PS5 power-saving settings.
  3. Improve the wired side first. Connect the PS5 to the router by Ethernet where practical. This removes one wireless hop between the console and router.
  4. Connect Portal to 5 GHz Wi‑Fi. Use the 5 GHz network when its signal reaches your playing area reliably. If band steering keeps changing bands, disable that router feature as Sony recommends.
  5. Keep the first test local. If the PS5 uses Wi‑Fi, put it and Portal on the same home network for initial pairing and troubleshooting. Test a game that does not require VR or an unsupported peripheral.
  6. Check audio and controls. Pair compatible PlayStation Link audio, plug in a 3.5 mm headset, or use the built-in speakers. The physical controls should be available without adding a separate controller.

If the first session is unstable, test the connection before changing game settings: move closer to the access point, remove unnecessary wireless congestion, and confirm that the PS5 has not lost its network connection.

How to set up Remote Play on a phone or tablet

  1. Verify the device and operating system. Install Sony’s PS Remote Play app on a supported phone or tablet. Android on-screen controls require Android 9 or later.
  2. Prepare the console. Enable Remote Play on a PS5 or PS4, connect the console to the internet, and sign in with the PlayStation account you will use in the app.
  3. Open the app and sign in. Use the same PlayStation account as the console, then select the PS5 or PS4 you want to connect to.
  4. Choose controls. The app displays touch controls when you tap the screen. For a more conventional layout, pair a supported controller before starting a long session.
  5. Decide whether to permit mobile data. Enable cellular use only if your plan and carrier allow it and you understand that Remote Play consumes considerably more data than ordinary video streaming.
  6. Test on Wi‑Fi first. A local Wi‑Fi session makes it easier to separate an app, controller or console problem from a carrier or public-network problem.

The exact pairing screens can vary by operating-system version and device model. Check Sony’s current compatibility list before buying a controller or assuming a particular phone feature will work.

Controls, operating systems and accessories

On-screen controls versus physical controls

Touch controls are the lowest-cost way to try mobile Remote Play, but they occupy part of the game image and do not provide the tactile separation of sticks, triggers and buttons. They can be adequate for menu navigation, turn-based games or a short check-in. Games that demand frequent camera movement, precise aiming or simultaneous inputs are usually more comfortable with a physical controller, but the choice remains yours.

Portal puts the physical controls in the same integrated layout every time. Its touch screen supplies touch-pad functions where a game maps them, so you do not need to carry a second controller. That convenience is the main reason to choose it over a phone you already own.

Android support

Sony lists Android smartphones and tablets running Android 9 or later for on-screen controls. Android 10 or later can pair a DUALSHOCK 4 controller, while Android 12 or later supports DualSense. Sony also lists Backbone One-PlayStation Edition compatibility for Android phones on Android 10 or later. Confirm the exact model and operating-system support before purchasing because Android manufacturers can implement controller and Bluetooth features differently.

iPhone and iPad support

Sony’s US Remote Play guidance lists DUALSHOCK 4 support on iOS 14 or later and DualSense support on iOS 14.5 or later. Backbone One-PlayStation Edition compatibility is listed for iPhone devices running iOS 15 or later. iPad screen size can make the touch interface easier to see, but it does not change the underlying network requirements.

What may not carry over from a console controller

Sony cautions that DualSense features on mobile can vary and that some features may not be available. Audio output and haptics are examples of features that can differ from the console experience. If a game depends on a particular controller effect, test that combination before planning to use it as your primary setup.

Can you play PS5 games on a phone, and can Portal play PS4 games?

A compatible phone or tablet can connect to a PS5 through the PS Remote Play app, so it can display PS5 games that meet Remote Play’s game requirements. The same app can also connect to a PS4. Portal’s console compatibility is narrower: it connects to PS5, not PS4.

That distinction matters if your household still uses a PS4, if you plan to replace a PS4 later, or if you want one Remote Play app that can reach either console. It also changes the value calculation: a phone you already own can serve both generations, whereas Portal is a PS5-focused purchase.

Can you use Remote Play away from home?

Yes, Remote Play is designed to connect over the internet rather than only across the same room. Away-from-home reliability depends on the PS5’s home upload path, the network where your phone or tablet connects, the mobile carrier if you use cellular data, and the route between those networks. Public Wi‑Fi may block peer-to-peer traffic or become congested at busy times.

Portal’s official requirement is a Wi‑Fi connection, so travel with Portal means finding a suitable Wi‑Fi network. A phone or tablet can use Wi‑Fi too and may additionally use mobile data when the app and carrier permit it. That flexibility is useful, but it exposes you to the data warning Sony gives for Remote Play and to the security and login requirements of the network you are using.

Game compatibility limits

Remote Play is not a universal mirror of every PlayStation mode. Sony excludes titles that require a VR headset or additional peripherals beyond supported PlayStation controllers. Games that must be streamed through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership also cannot be played through Remote Play. A game can therefore be installed on the console yet unavailable through a Remote Play session if it falls into one of those categories.

Online multiplayer is a separate question. Remote Play itself does not require a PS Plus membership, but the game’s own multiplayer rules may require one. Check the game’s requirement rather than assuming the Remote Play connection changes it.

Latency, image quality and troubleshooting

There is no universally faster choice between Portal and a phone or tablet. Sony’s Portal FAQ says, “The quality and connectivity of your play experience may vary depending on your network environment.” The same principle applies to mobile Remote Play: the console, local network, internet route, receiving device and game all contribute to the result.

If controls feel delayed

  • Test the same game on the same network at a less congested time to see whether the problem is temporary.
  • Use Ethernet for the PS5 where possible and 5 GHz Wi‑Fi for Portal, following Sony’s recommended arrangement.
  • Move the receiving device closer to the Wi‑Fi access point and avoid placing it behind dense walls or near sources of interference.
  • On mobile, compare Wi‑Fi with another permitted network before blaming the controller; carrier routing can be the limiting factor.
  • Remember that a game with a high precision or fast-camera demand makes a small delay more noticeable than a menu or turn-based title.

If the connection drops

  • Confirm that the PS5 remains online and that Rest Mode network wake settings are enabled if you are connecting after the console sleeps.
  • Check whether the router moved Portal between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz; disable band steering if that switching is recurring.
  • On cellular, verify that the app is allowed to use mobile data and that your carrier has not restricted the service.
  • Try a local same-network session. If that works while an away-from-home session fails, the remote network or internet route is the likely constraint.

If a game will not start

Check whether it needs a VR headset, a peripheral that is not supported through Remote Play, or cloud streaming through a PlayStation Plus Premium membership. Those categories are excluded regardless of whether you use Portal or a mobile device.

Which option fits common situations?

Your situation Better starting point Reason
You own a PS5 and want a handheld-like control layout without assembling accessories. Portal Its physical controls, touch-pad functions and screen are integrated.
You own a PS4, a PS5, or both and want one app to reach either console. Phone or tablet The mobile app supports PS4 and PS5; Portal is PS5-only.
You already have a recent phone or tablet and play only occasionally. Phone or tablet You can start with the device you own and add a controller only if touch controls are unsuitable.
You travel where dependable Wi‑Fi is uncertain but your cellular plan is generous. Phone or tablet Mobile data may be available, subject to the device, carrier, signal and data cap.
You mainly play action games and dislike touch controls. Portal, or a phone/tablet with a supported controller Both can provide physical controls; Portal includes them, while mobile requires an additional compatible controller.
You want the largest screen available among devices you already own. Whichever is larger and supported Portal has an 8-inch HD screen, while mobile screen size depends on your phone or tablet.
You use VR or a game-specific unsupported peripheral. Neither for that title Remote Play excludes games requiring those devices.

What you are committing to

Choosing Portal

You are buying a purpose-built endpoint rather than reusing a screen already in your pocket. In return, the controls, display and basic audio choices are always together, and you do not need to balance a phone in a controller mount. The trade-off is narrower console compatibility and dependence on Wi‑Fi. Portal is most sensible when PS5 is your main console and Remote Play is a regular habit rather than an occasional experiment.

Choosing a phone or tablet

You avoid a dedicated handheld purchase if you already have a supported device. You can select touch controls for convenience or add a compatible DUALSHOCK 4, DualSense or listed mobile controller. You also retain the option of PS4 access and, where supported, mobile data. The trade-offs are accessory decisions, operating-system compatibility checks, possible loss of some DualSense features, and greater exposure to data charges when you are away from Wi‑Fi.

Adding a controller or headset

A mobile controller is optional, not a prerequisite for the app. Buy one only if touch controls interfere with the games you play. Likewise, Portal’s PlayStation Link earbuds are optional; Portal can use its speakers or a wired 3.5 mm headset. Treat these as comfort upgrades rather than requirements for Remote Play.

A practical decision checklist

Answer these questions in order:

  1. Which console must you reach? If the answer includes PS4, start with a phone or tablet. If it is PS5 only, both paths remain open.
  2. Do you already own a supported mobile device? If yes, install the app and test it before buying hardware. If no, Portal may be the simpler dedicated setup, provided Wi‑Fi is reliable.
  3. Are physical controls essential? If yes, choose Portal or budget for a supported controller for your phone or tablet.
  4. Will you play on cellular data? If yes, confirm carrier support and check your data cap because Sony says Remote Play uses much more data than most video streaming.
  5. Can your home network meet Sony’s guidance? Plan around the 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps recommendation for Portal, or the 5 Mbps upload/download baseline and 15 Mbps best-performance recommendation for mobile.
  6. Do your favorite games use VR or unsupported peripherals? If they do, Remote Play is not the right way to play those titles on either device.

If your answers point to PS5, integrated controls and dependable Wi‑Fi, Portal is the direct fit. If they point to an existing phone or tablet, PS4 access or mobile-data flexibility, use the mobile app and add a controller only when your games justify it.
