The most consequential checks are Settings > System > 3D Audio, Settings > System > Battery, the Portal’s Wi-Fi connection, and the PS5’s Remote Play and rest-mode configuration.
Do not assume that a support page in one country lists the same release as your device. Sony’s regional pages have shown different latest versions, so the Portal’s own Device Information screen is the authority for what is actually installed.

1. Confirm which system software is installed
Checking the version on the Portal prevents a common mistake: changing settings described in release notes for a build that has not reached your device yet. Sony’s current path is:

- Tap Settings.
- Open System > System Software.
- Select Device Information and note the version number.
Use that number when reading Sony’s update-feature page or when contacting PlayStation Support. The version shown in Device Information is more useful than a search result or a release-note page from another region.

If more than one update is offered
Sony says a Portal that starts from an older build may need several updates before it reaches a state in which later releases install in one step. Seeing a sequence of updates is therefore not, by itself, evidence that the device is failing. Install each offered update in order, allowing the Portal to restart and return to the system screen before checking again.
2. Match the installed version to the correct release notes
Release notes explain which controls should exist on a particular build. At the time of the cited Sony pages, the Croatia support page displayed version 7.3.0, while the US page displayed 7.0.2. That difference does not prove that every Croatian device has 7.3.0 or that every US device is limited to 7.0.2; regional pages can be updated at different times.
| Release information | Setting or behavior described | How to use the information |
|---|---|---|
| 7.3.0 (Croatia page) | A 3D Audio on/off control while playing a game; live search results; a QR option to continue to PlayStation Store; general performance and usability improvements. | Look for Settings > System > 3D Audio after confirming that 7.3.0 is installed on your Portal. |
| 7.1.7 notes | An 80% default battery-charge limit, adjustable under Settings > System > Battery. | Check the Battery page because the control and its behavior depend on the installed version. |
| 7.0.2 (US page at the cited time) | The US page listed 7.0.0 and earlier details but did not display the 7.3.0 notes visible on the Croatia page. | Use the release notes that correspond to your device’s region and installed version rather than assuming the newest foreign page applies. |
Sony Interactive Entertainment says it strongly recommends installing the latest update as soon as possible after release. That recommendation does not remove the need to verify the version, because availability and displayed notes can differ by region.

3. Recheck the settings most likely to matter
3D Audio
On versions whose notes include the feature, open Settings > System > 3D Audio. Version 7.3.0 notes describe an on/off control that can be used while playing a game. Toggle it while listening to the same scene or sound effect, then keep the option that produces the clearest positional cues for your headphones or speakers. If the menu is absent, verify the installed version first; do not treat its absence as a hardware fault when your build does not list the feature.

Battery charge limit
Open Settings > System > Battery and check the charge-limit value. Sony’s version 7.1.7 notes describe an 80% default limit. The same notes say the limit can be changed above 80%, but warn that choosing a higher value may affect battery performance and overall stability and can reduce long-term battery health. The exact control can be version-dependent, so use the value and wording shown on your Portal rather than assuming every unit exposes the same choices.
An 80% limit is a battery-longevity setting, not an update requirement. It does not prevent you from installing system software, provided the Portal has sufficient charge and remains connected to power when appropriate.
Network connection
In Settings, review the connected Wi-Fi network and its connection status. For Remote Play, Sony recommends a stable, high-speed connection, 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal, and at least 15 Mbps for a better play experience. The 15 Mbps figure is a recommendation, not a guarantee of a specific latency, resolution, or frame rate.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors- Prefer 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal when your router and room layout support it.
- Connect the PS5 by wired Ethernet where possible.
- If the PS5 must use Wi-Fi, put both the console and Portal on the same network when you are playing at home.
- Recheck the network after an update if the Portal has forgotten credentials, selected a different access point, or reports a weak signal.
Public Wi-Fi can be the limiting factor even when the Portal is configured correctly. Captive portals, congestion, filtering and changing radio conditions are outside your control, so a speed test alone cannot promise smooth play.

Display and brightness
Open the Display and Brightness controls and restore your preferred screen brightness. Also review the light-bar and mute-indicator behavior if those indicators are distracting in a dark room. These are personal settings, but an update is a useful point to confirm them before blaming a game or the display for a changed appearance.
Controller response
Check vibration and trigger-effect intensity in the controller settings. A software update can make a previously selected strength feel different, and some games use these effects heavily. Lowering either control can make long sessions more comfortable and may avoid unwanted noise on a desk or in a quiet room.
PlayStation Link device
If you use a PlayStation Link audio device, open its settings and verify volume, equalizer, microphone mute and reset controls. Confirm that the expected device is selected before troubleshooting game audio. A muted microphone or a changed equalizer can look like an in-game audio problem when the Portal is operating normally.

Cloud Streaming availability
Cloud-streaming information and related accessibility options appear only for adult accounts in regions where PlayStation Plus Premium is available. If those entries do not appear, check the account age classification, subscription and regional availability before attempting a reset. Their absence is not evidence that the update failed.

4. Verify the PS5 settings that Remote Play still requires
Updating the Portal does not configure the PS5 for Remote Play. On the PS5, confirm all of the following:
- The console is connected to the internet and has current system software.
- The PS5 is signed in with the same account used on the Portal.
- Open Settings > System > Remote Play and turn on Enable Remote Play.
- If you want to wake the console from rest mode, open Settings > System > Power Saving > Features Available in Rest Mode and enable both Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
Test Remote Play once while the PS5 is awake, then test waking it from rest mode if that is part of your normal use. This separates an account or Remote Play configuration issue from a rest-mode network issue.
When the connection works but play is unstable
- Confirm the Portal is on the intended 5 GHz network rather than a distant 2.4 GHz access point.
- Use Ethernet for the PS5 if possible; it removes one wireless hop.
- Restart the router and both devices only after recording the current settings, so you can tell whether the restart changed anything.
- Try the same game on a private home network. If it works there but not on public Wi-Fi, the network environment is the likely limitation.
Sony’s 15 Mbps recommendation is a baseline for a better experience, not a service-level guarantee. Latency, interference, upload capacity and congestion can still produce delay or image breakup at higher measured speeds.
5. Keep the Portal powered safely during an update
Do not begin an installation with an insufficient battery charge, and do not turn the Portal off while the update is being installed. Interrupting the process can leave the device unable to complete the update and may require support intervention.

The Portal includes a charging cable. If you need a replacement, Sony advises using the included Portal or PS5 cable; another cable must comply with USB standards, and Sony warns that not all cables function properly. A USB Power Delivery AC adapter should provide a USB-C output of at least 5 V/3 A, as stated in the instruction manual. You do not need to purchase a new cable merely to check settings or install an update.
6. Troubleshoot an update or settings problem in the right order
The version did not change
- Return to Quick Menu > Settings > System > System Software > Device Information and record the number.
- Open Update System Software on the same System Software screen and check again.
- If several updates are listed, install them sequentially; an older starting build can require multiple stages.
- Keep the Portal charged and powered on until the installation and restart finish.
Do not use unofficial update files or undocumented installation methods. Sony specifically advises using only official files and documented procedures.
A setting mentioned in the notes is missing
Compare the Device Information number with the release note that describes the setting. Then check the support page for your region. The 3D Audio control described for 7.3.0 and the 80% battery limit described for 7.1.7 are version-dependent, so a missing menu can be expected on an earlier build or a page that has not yet been updated for your region.
The Tool Desk

- Check the Portal’s Wi-Fi status and reconnect to the intended network.
- On the PS5, verify the same-account sign-in and Settings > System > Remote Play > Enable Remote Play.
- For rest-mode startup, recheck both Power Saving options: Stay Connected to the Internet and Enable Turning on PS5 from Network.
- Prefer Ethernet for the PS5 and 5 GHz Wi-Fi for the Portal, then test on a private network.
If the update itself reports an error after these checks, note the installed version and contact PlayStation Support. Avoid repeatedly forcing shutdowns or applying files obtained outside Sony’s documented process.
