The download is not necessarily damaged. Sign in with the account that bought or redeemed the game, confirm that the relevant PS Plus membership and game access are still active, then restore licenses. If another account owns the entitlement, correct console-sharing or primary-console settings before reinstalling anything.
What the padlock means
PlayStation treats the game files and the right to use those files as separate things. Your console can retain every downloaded file while the account check that authorizes launch fails. That produces an installed game with a padlock and a message asking you to purchase, subscribe, or verify the license.

The icon therefore does not, by itself, prove that the download failed. Common causes include signing in with a different account, an expired PS Plus membership, a Game Catalog title that reached its published removal date, a console that has not synchronized licenses, or sharing settings that no longer identify the owning account correctly.

Diagnose the lock before changing anything

Write down the exact on-screen message before proceeding. Wording such as “renew your subscription,” “cannot use this content,” or a numeric error code points to different branches of the diagnosis.
1. Confirm the account that owns the game
Digital rights are attached to the PlayStation Network account that purchased the game, redeemed the monthly-game benefit, or accessed the catalog. A console can contain several user profiles, but installing a title while signed in to one profile does not transfer ownership to the others.
- On the locked console, switch to the profile that normally purchased or redeemed the game.
- Open that account’s transaction or purchase history and look for the game, the redemption entry, or the PS Plus claim associated with it.
- Check the transaction date and edition. A trial, beta, add-on, or different edition may appear similar to the full game but does not grant the same launch entitlement.
- If the transaction is absent, sign out and test the account used by the person who originally bought or claimed the title. Do not repurchase until ownership is established.
If the game was obtained through a code, verify that the code was redeemed on the intended account. A redeemed code cannot normally be moved to a different account simply because that account is now the main user of the console.
2. Check PS Plus membership and the game’s service status
Monthly games
Monthly games are available to download and play at no additional charge while the associated PS Plus membership remains active. If the subscription ends, games obtained through that monthly benefit become unavailable even when their files remain installed. Renewing the membership on the account that claimed the game restores the entitlement, provided the title was actually claimed by that account.

Game Catalog and Classics Catalog
PS Plus Extra includes the Game Catalog. PS Plus Premium includes the Game Catalog and the Classics Catalog. Catalog access is conditional: a title can have a published end date and leave the service while your membership is still active. Once it leaves, the catalog entitlement no longer authorizes launch, so an installed copy can show a padlock.
- Open the PlayStation Plus area on the console or the current PlayStation account page.
- Confirm the membership tier and its next billing or expiration date.
- Search the title in the catalog, not only in your installed-games library.
- Read the title’s availability or end-date notice. If it has left the service, the choices are to buy the game separately, use another valid entitlement, or stop using that installation.
Do not confuse a catalog removal with a temporary service outage. A removed title will remain unavailable after repeated license restores; an outage usually affects sign-in, store, or multiple games and may clear when service is restored.
3. Restore licenses on PS5 or PS4
Restoring licenses asks PlayStation to refresh the console’s record of the digital rights associated with your account. PlayStation specifically recommends this action when a game displays a padlock. The procedure does not delete saved data, installed games, or the account’s purchase history.
PS5
- Sign in to the account that purchased or redeemed the game.
- From the home screen, open Settings.
- Select Users and Accounts.
- Choose Other.
- Select Restore Licenses, choose the affected title if prompted, and confirm.
- Wait for the process to finish, then restart the PS5 and try the game again.
PS4
- Sign in to the purchasing or redeeming account.
- Open Settings from the function screen.
- Select Account Management.
- Choose Restore Licenses and confirm.
- After completion, restart the PS4 and launch the title from the owning account.
Restoring licenses cannot create an entitlement. It will not unlock a monthly game after the membership has ended, bring back a title removed from the Game Catalog, or move a purchase from one account to another. It is useful when the entitlement is valid but the console’s local record is stale or inconsistent.

4. Fix account sharing and console activation
PS5: Console Sharing and Offline Play
PS5 Console Sharing and Offline Play allows other users on one PS5 to use selected games and benefits from the account that enabled the setting. If the owning account is not enabled on that console, another household profile may see a padlock even though the owner can launch the game.
- Sign in to the owning account on the PS5.
- Go to Settings > Users and Accounts > Other > Console Sharing and Offline Play.
- Enable the setting if this is the PS5 designated to share that account’s benefits.
- Return to the secondary user profile and test the game while the console is connected to the internet.
The setting is intended for one PS5 at a time. Enabling it on a different console can disable sharing on the previous one, so check which device is currently designated before changing it.
PS4: Activate as your primary PS4
On PS4, the owning account must activate the console as its primary PS4 for other local users to use selected purchased games and PS Plus benefits.

- Sign in to the owning account.
- Open Settings > Account Management.
- Select Activate as Your Primary PS4.
- Choose Activate, then sign in to the profile that was seeing the padlock and test the game.
PlayStation allows selected PS Plus benefits to be shared on one primary PS4 and one PS5 with the relevant settings enabled. Sharing does not transfer ownership, and it does not make a catalog title usable after it leaves the service.

5. Follow the repair sequence if the license is valid
Use these steps in order. Test the game after each major change so you know which action resolved the problem.
Check service status
Look for an active PlayStation Network or account-management incident. A service interruption can prevent the console from validating an otherwise valid license. Wait for the incident to clear before repeatedly restoring licenses or reinstalling the game.
Install the latest system software
Open the console’s system-software update screen and install any pending update. Keep the console connected to the internet until the update and restart are complete. A system update can correct compatibility and account-validation problems that a license restore alone does not address.
Restart completely
Use the console’s restart command rather than simply putting it into Rest Mode. After the reboot, connect to the network, sign in to the owning account, and launch the game from the library.
Delete and redownload
Only use this step after confirming that the account still owns the game or has an active catalog entitlement.
- Highlight the affected game, press the options button, and choose the console’s delete or remove command.
- Restart the console.
- Open the Game Library or PlayStation Plus page while signed in to the entitled account.
- Download the title again and allow all updates to finish before launching.
Deleting the application does not erase cloud or local save data when you remove only the game installation, but verify your backup situation before selecting any option that mentions saved data or storage management.
Use Safe Mode database repair
If the game remains locked or the library behaves incorrectly after a valid license restore and clean redownload, use Safe Mode’s cache-clearing or database-rebuild option offered by the console. These tools reorganize local system information; they are not substitutes for an active entitlement.

- Turn the console off completely.
- Press and hold the power button until the second beep to enter Safe Mode.
- Connect the controller with a USB cable when prompted.
- Choose the cache-clear or database-rebuild option available for your model, following the on-screen warning.
- Allow the process to finish without disconnecting power, then restart and test the game.
Safe Mode menus differ between PS5 and PS4 firmware versions. Do not choose an option that resets or initializes the console unless PlayStation Support has specifically instructed you and you have verified backups.

Prepare an effective PlayStation Support request
Support can troubleshoot an entitlement faster when the report identifies exactly which account, console, and title are involved. Gather:
- Your PSN online ID and the email address used for the purchasing or redeeming account.
- Console model: PS5 or PS4, plus the installed system-software version.
- Game title, edition, and whether it was purchased, redeemed as a monthly game, or accessed through Extra or Premium.
- The exact padlock message or error code.
- The date and time of the failed launch, including your time zone.
- The steps that reproduce the issue, such as selecting the game from the library while signed in as a secondary user.
- A screenshot or short video showing the padlock and message, with payment details and personal information hidden.
- The results of license restoration, subscription verification, sharing checks, restart, redownload, and Safe Mode repair.
Do not send passwords, full payment-card numbers, or two-factor authentication codes. Use only the official support channel associated with your region and account.

Prevent the padlock from returning
- Claim monthly games on the account that will actually retain the PS Plus membership.
- Before deleting a game, check whether it is a monthly benefit, a catalog title, or a separately purchased copy.
- Note catalog end dates for games you are still playing; an active subscription does not guarantee permanent catalog access.
- Keep the owning account’s email, password, and two-factor authentication method available when changing consoles.
- Designate only the intended PS5 for Console Sharing and Offline Play and the intended PS4 as primary.
- Install system-software updates and connect periodically so the console can validate digital entitlements.
- Back up important saves before deleting applications or using any Safe Mode option that mentions storage changes.
Bottom line
A padlock on a downloaded PS Plus game is usually an entitlement-validation issue, not proof of a bad download. Establish which account owns the right, verify that the membership and title are still eligible, restore licenses on the correct console, and fix sharing settings when another profile is relying on that entitlement. Only after those checks should you update, restart, redownload, rebuild the database, or escalate with a complete error report.
