PlayStation Plus Classics Catalog games are subscription benefits, not permanent purchases. On PS5 and PS4, open the PlayStation Plus area, choose Classics Catalog, select an eligible title and choose Download when your account has the required plan. You can also stream supported Classics, but streaming needs the correct membership and at least 5 Mbps broadband (15 Mbps for 1080p when the game supports it).
A downloaded game can stop launching if your qualifying subscription lapses, you downgrade away from the benefit, or Sony removes that title on a published end date. Saves also behave differently: streamed games store progress on PlayStation, while downloaded games store it on the console. PlayStation Plus cloud storage is the bridge when you move between those formats.

Which PlayStation Plus plan includes the Classics Catalog?
PlayStation Plus Premium includes the Classics Catalog and Cloud Streaming. Lower PlayStation Plus tiers do not provide the same Classics Catalog benefit. Your access is attached to the PlayStation Network account holding the membership, so the account that starts the game must have the qualifying entitlement or use an eligible console-sharing arrangement.
| PlayStation Plus benefit | Premium | Lower tiers |
|---|---|---|
| Classics Catalog | Included | Not included as the same benefit |
| Cloud Streaming | Included | Not included as the same benefit |
On a primary PS4 and one PS5 with Console Sharing and Offline Play enabled, selected PlayStation Plus benefits can be shared with other users on that console. Sharing does not turn the catalog into a permanent license for another account; the qualifying membership and Sony’s sharing rules still control access.

How to download a PS Plus Classics game
The download process is the same basic path on PS5 and PS4. The game must be part of the catalog in your region and your account must have the required membership.
- Sign in to the PlayStation Network account with the qualifying PlayStation Plus membership.
- Open the PlayStation Plus area from the console home screen.
- Choose Classics Catalog.
- Select the game you want to play.
- Choose Download. If the button is unavailable, check the account, plan and catalog listing before troubleshooting the console.
- Wait for installation to finish, then start the game from the console library or home screen.
Downloading copies the game files to local console storage. It does not convert the title into a purchase that remains yours independently of PlayStation Plus. The console periodically verifies that the account still has the entitlement and that the title remains available through the service.
Can you stream Classics Catalog games instead?
Yes, when the title supports streaming and your account has the required plan. Streaming runs the game on PlayStation’s servers rather than installing the complete game locally.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute- Minimum connection: at least 5 Mbps broadband for PlayStation Plus Classics streaming.
- 1080p: at least 15 Mbps, and the individual game must support 1080p streaming.
- Possible queues: demand can place you in a queue before the session starts.
- Features that Sony lists as unavailable during streaming: broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move and third-party-controller support.
A speed test above the minimum does not guarantee perfect play. Wi-Fi interference, congestion, latency and other household traffic can still affect image quality or responsiveness. If a streamed session is unstable, downloading the title (when Download is offered) removes the broadband dependency during play, although it uses console storage and still requires an active entitlement.
Do downloaded Classics games expire?
There is no fixed timer that starts when you press Download. Sony describes PlayStation Plus games as playable for as long as you remain an active subscriber. In practice, the downloaded files stay on the console, but the license is conditional.

What can block a downloaded game?
- Membership lapse: a canceled or expired subscription removes the qualifying entitlement after the paid period ends.
- Plan downgrade: when a downgrade takes effect, benefits exclusive to the previous tier are lost. Moving away from Premium therefore removes Classics Catalog access.
- Catalog removal: some Game Catalogue and Classics Catalogue titles have announced end dates. Sony publicizes those dates in advance, and access can end when the title leaves the service even if it is already installed.
- Account mismatch: signing in with an account that does not hold the membership can leave the game locked.
Renewing the qualifying membership generally restores the subscription entitlement for a title that is still in the catalog. It cannot restore access to a game that has already left the service, and it does not override a plan that no longer includes Classics.
What happens after you cancel PlayStation Plus?
Canceling turns off renewal; it does not normally end the already-paid membership immediately. You can continue using the benefit until the current subscription period ends. Once the account is no longer an active subscriber, downloaded Classics games can show a lock and streamed access is unavailable.

A game that is still listed may become playable again after the entitlement refreshes. A title removed during the gap will not be covered merely because it remains installed on your console.
Where are saves for streamed and downloaded games?
The two play methods use different save locations:
| How you play | Where Sony says saved data is stored | What that means |
|---|---|---|
| Streamed PlayStation Plus game | On PlayStation | Progress is associated with the streaming session and is not automatically placed in the console’s local game-save storage. |
| Downloaded PlayStation Plus game | Console storage on your PS5 or PS4 | Progress is saved locally, like other games installed on that console. |
Because these are separate storage locations, progress is not transferred automatically when you switch from streaming to a download or the other way around. Starting the downloaded copy can therefore look as if you have no save, even though the streamed session still has progress stored on PlayStation.
How to move a save between streaming and a download
PlayStation Plus cloud storage provides the manual transfer path. You need an active cloud-storage benefit and enough space for the save.

- Finish playing on the source format: stream or download.
- Upload that game’s saved data to PlayStation Plus online storage from the console’s saved-data controls.
- On the destination format or console, open the same saved-data controls.
- Download the uploaded save from online storage to the destination location.
- Launch the game and confirm that the expected progress appears before creating new saves that could overwrite it.
The cloud is a transfer mechanism, not an automatic synchronisation between streaming and downloaded versions. Upload before changing formats, and download before you start a new campaign on the other version. If both versions have progress, keep separate copies in cloud storage where the console’s controls allow it and verify dates before choosing which save to restore.

PlayStation Plus cloud storage provides up to 100 GB for PS5 saved data and up to 100 GB for PS4 saved data. PS4 saved data is also subject to a limit of 1,000 files. Those are service limits, so a full cloud allocation or a file-count limit can prevent an upload until you remove older saves.
Keep a recent upload for any game you intend to switch between streaming and downloading. If you play on both PS5 and PS4 versions, remember that the storage pools and game-save compatibility are not automatically interchangeable; use the save type supported by the version you are launching.
Download versus stream: which should you use?
| Consideration | Download | Stream |
|---|---|---|
| Internet during play | Not needed for continuous gameplay after installation, though entitlement checks and updates can still matter. | Broadband connection required; Sony lists 5 Mbps minimum and 15 Mbps for supported 1080p streaming. |
| Storage | Uses PS5 or PS4 console storage. | Does not require the full game installation on the console. |
| Save location | Console storage. | On PlayStation. |
| Moving progress between methods | Requires a manual cloud upload/download workflow. | Requires a manual cloud upload/download workflow. |
| Streaming-only restrictions | Not subject to the listed streaming feature restrictions. | No broadcasting, Share Play, Share Screen, Remote Play, mouse, keyboard, PSVR, PS Move or third-party-controller support; queues may occur. |
Choose Download when you have enough storage and want local saves or less dependence on connection quality. Choose Stream when you want to try a title without installing it and your connection meets the requirements. If you expect to change methods, upload the save before switching.
What to check when a Classics game is locked
- Confirm the account: make sure the console is signed in to the account that owns the qualifying membership, or that console sharing is configured on the eligible PS5 or primary PS4.
- Check the plan: verify that the subscription is still Premium. A downgrade can remove the Classics benefit when it takes effect.
- Check the subscription period: a canceled renewal may have allowed play until the end date, after which the entitlement expires.
- Check the catalog listing: look for an announced end date or confirmation that the title has left the Classics Catalog.
- Refresh the entitlement: sign out and back in, then use the console’s option to restore licenses if the membership and catalog listing are both valid.
- Protect your progress: do not delete local data while diagnosing the lock. If the game was streamed, its save is on PlayStation; if downloaded, check console storage and cloud storage separately.
License restoration cannot bring back a title removed from the catalog or add Classics access to a lower plan. Those cases require the appropriate membership and a title that is still offered.
Quick Recap
Practical rules for avoiding lost progress or access
- Record the subscription end date before canceling or downgrading.
- Upload a save before moving from streaming to a download, or before changing consoles.
- Keep cloud storage below 100 GB for each platform’s saved data and below 1,000 PS4 save files.
- Check a title’s catalog end date before investing in a long playthrough.
- Use the same PlayStation Network account when downloading, streaming and restoring saves.
- For streaming, use a wired or stable broadband connection when possible and stop competing high-bandwidth activity on the network.
