Proxmox Virtual Hardware Explained: Machine Types, CPU Models, and Device Emulation

Use a stable machine type, select a CPU model that every possible migration target supports, and prefer VirtIO devices when the guest has the required drivers. Keep emulated hardware for legacy compatibility. In Proxmox VE, these choices define what the guest sees, how much host CPU work is required, which instruction features are available, and whether the VM can move safely between nodes.

What Proxmox virtual hardware actually is

Proxmox VE runs QEMU/KVM virtual machines. QEMU presents each VM with a complete virtual computer: a virtual motherboard and chipset, CPU, memory controllers, storage controllers, disks, network adapters, display hardware, firmware, USB devices and other peripherals. The guest operating system treats those components much like physical hardware.

That abstraction is why an unmodified operating system can run in a VM. A conventional emulated disk controller or network card looks familiar to the guest and can work with drivers already included in an old installer. The trade-off is that the host must emulate more of the device’s behavior in software, consuming CPU time and adding overhead.

Paravirtualized devices take a different approach. A VirtIO disk or network adapter exposes an interface designed for virtualization, allowing the guest driver and hypervisor to cooperate instead of pretending that every operation came from a physical legacy device. This normally lowers overhead and improves efficiency, but only when the guest has a functioning VirtIO driver.

There is no universally “best” virtual hardware profile. The right combination depends on the guest OS, its installed drivers, the host CPU generations in the cluster, live-migration targets, boot firmware and the features the workload needs.

Machine type: the VM’s virtual motherboard contract

A machine type is the virtual motherboard and chipset definition exposed to the guest. It determines which virtual buses, controllers and motherboard-level features exist and forms part of the VM’s compatibility baseline. Once an operating system is installed and stable, treat the machine type as a versioned contract rather than a setting to change casually.

What to choose for a new VM

For a new VM, use the current machine type offered by the Proxmox VE and QEMU versions running in your environment unless you have a documented reason to select another one. A current type can expose newer virtual hardware, but the exact options and defaults vary by software version. Check the machine-type choices presented by your installation and confirm that the guest OS supports the resulting hardware.

Do not select a machine type solely because it is the newest entry. A long-lived VM may need to move between nodes with different package versions, or it may depend on a controller layout established during installation. Stability and migration compatibility are usually more valuable than an unneeded feature.

When changing an established VM is justified

Change the machine type only for a specific compatibility, feature or upgrade requirement. Examples include a documented QEMU/Proxmox upgrade recommendation, a guest feature that the current virtual chipset cannot provide, or a known incompatibility that the newer definition fixes. Record the previous setting and make a backup before changing it.

A machine-type change can alter the virtual devices or buses that the guest enumerates. The guest may assign different device paths, require a driver, or fail to boot if its boot disk is no longer presented in the expected way. Test the change on a clone or restore point when the VM is important.

Machine type, firmware and boot layout

Machine type and firmware are related but distinct decisions. BIOS and UEFI determine how the guest starts; the machine type determines the virtual platform it starts on. Keep the firmware choice consistent with the installed operating system and its boot layout. Switching from BIOS to UEFI, or the reverse, can require a different partition layout or bootloader configuration and should be planned as a migration, not treated as a cosmetic toggle.

During Proxmox upgrades, consult the release-specific guidance for machine-version pinning, particularly for Windows guests. Pinning can keep an established guest on a known virtual hardware definition while the host software changes. Verify the exact behavior in the Proxmox version you operate.

CPU models: balancing features and migration

The virtual CPU model controls the processor identity and instruction extensions visible inside the guest. It is a cluster-level decision: a model that performs well on one node is unsuitable if a destination node cannot provide the same features.

host CPU mode

The host model exposes the host CPU as closely as the virtualization stack allows. This can make additional instruction features available to applications and may be useful for workloads that explicitly require them. It also ties the VM to that host’s CPU feature set.

Use host only when every node on which the VM may run has the same CPU model and compatible features. “The same vendor” is not enough: different generations, firmware settings or feature masks can still produce an incompatible destination. A VM configured with host can run correctly on its current node and then fail to start or migrate when moved to a node with a different feature set.

Generic x86-64-v<X> models

Generic models such as x86-64-v2, x86-64-v3 and x86-64-v4 define progressively richer, standardized feature baselines. Select the highest baseline that every current and planned destination supports. A lower common baseline is safer for a heterogeneous or expanding cluster; a higher one can expose instructions that the workload needs but narrows the set of eligible nodes.

For a cluster with different CPU generations, or one likely to gain new hardware later, a generic x86-64-v<X> model is generally safer than host. The objective is not maximum features on one server; it is a CPU identity that remains valid across the migration domain.

Custom CPU models and flags

Custom models are defined in /etc/pve/virtual-guest/cpu-models.conf. The reference supports a reported model, additive and subtractive CPU flags, KVM hiding, a Hyper-V vendor ID and reported physical address bits. These controls are useful when a guest needs a precise feature mask, but each extra exception becomes part of the VM’s compatibility contract.

Pay particular attention to physical address bits. Setting the value to host can prevent live migration to a CPU whose physical-address-bit value differs. If you need a custom model, document the required flags and verify the same definition and capabilities on every destination node before enabling migration.

Emulated versus VirtIO devices

Compare every device choice on four axes:

  • Guest-driver availability: can the operating system install and boot with the selected device?
  • Performance overhead: how much host CPU work is needed for each I/O operation?
  • Portability: will the device remain available on another node or hardware platform?
  • Feature exposure: does the workload need a capability that only a particular virtual or physical device provides?

Legacy emulation usually wins compatibility. VirtIO usually wins efficiency. Host-specific CPU exposure and physical passthrough provide the most direct access to hardware but reduce portability.

Storage controllers and disk buses

VirtIO SCSI is a common paravirtualized storage choice when the guest has the appropriate driver. It reduces the emulation burden while providing a virtual SCSI-style controller. IDE, SATA and other emulated options can be preferable for an older installer or guest that lacks VirtIO support.

Confirm the guest driver plan before changing a boot disk controller. A data disk can often be tested first, but moving the boot disk to a controller that the guest cannot recognize can produce an inaccessible-root-disk or boot failure. Install or inject the required driver using the guest OS’s supported method, verify that it is active, and keep a recovery path before changing the controller.

Storage choice Compatibility profile Typical reason to use it Main caution
VirtIO SCSI Paravirtualized; requires a guest driver Lower virtualization overhead and efficient storage I/O Do not move a boot disk until the guest can load the VirtIO driver
IDE, SATA or emulated SCSI Broad legacy compatibility Older operating systems, installers or recovery environments More emulation work and potentially higher overhead

Network adapters

VirtIO networking is the normal efficiency choice when the guest driver is available. It lets the guest and hypervisor exchange packets through a virtualization-aware interface with less emulation overhead.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use an emulated network model for an older guest that cannot use VirtIO. Compatibility is more important than theoretical throughput if the operating system cannot reliably initialize the paravirtualized adapter. Before switching a production interface, confirm the new adapter’s driver, interface naming and network configuration inside the guest; the OS may treat it as a new network device.

Display, console and graphics

Select the display model according to guest support and how the VM will be administered. A graphical guest may need a compatible virtual display for the Proxmox console, while a server that is managed remotely may need only a basic console path.

GPU passthrough and mediated devices are separate, host-dependent designs. They provide more direct graphics access but introduce device assignment, reset and migration constraints that ordinary virtual display settings do not solve. Treat them as a deliberate hardware architecture rather than an upgrade to an emulated display.

USB, TPM, audio, random-number generator and passthrough

Add optional devices only when the workload needs them. A virtual TPM may be required by a guest security design; audio is relevant to interactive workloads; a virtual random-number generator can supply entropy; USB devices support peripherals that cannot be represented by ordinary virtual hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Physical passthrough gives the guest direct access to a host device. That can improve access to specialized hardware, but it binds the VM to a particular host, consumes an assignable device and can prevent or complicate live migration. Remove or redesign passthrough before expecting a VM to move freely across the cluster.

A practical selection method

  1. Identify the guest baseline. Record the operating system edition, kernel or driver state, boot firmware and whether it supports VirtIO storage and networking.
  2. Define the migration domain. List every node where the VM must run now and every node likely to be added. Compare CPU generations and available instruction features.
  3. Choose the machine type conservatively. Use the current supported type for a new VM; retain the established type on an existing VM unless a documented change is required.
  4. Choose the CPU model for the cluster. Use host only for nodes with the same CPU model and features. Otherwise select the highest generic x86-64-v<X> baseline supported everywhere.
  5. Choose paravirtualized devices where drivers are ready. Prefer VirtIO networking and a VirtIO SCSI storage design for supported guests. Keep emulated devices for legacy compatibility.
  6. Add optional hardware last. USB, TPM, audio, RNG and passthrough should have a workload requirement and a migration plan.
  7. Test before committing. Shut down or snapshot according to your operational policy, change one hardware category at a time, boot the guest, verify drivers and services, and test migration to a representative destination.

Changing settings without losing the VM

In the VM’s hardware and options views, record the current machine type, CPU model, firmware, controller, disk bus, network model and any passthrough assignments. Keep a backup or tested clone. Make one related change at a time so a failure has a clear cause.

Changing the CPU model

First check the CPU capabilities on all migration targets. Change the VM’s CPU type to the selected generic baseline or, only in a uniform cluster, to host. Boot the guest and verify that applications still see the required instruction extensions. Then perform a live-migration test to a destination node; a successful reboot on the original node is not proof that migration will work.

Changing a storage or network device

Install and verify the guest driver before changing the virtual device. For a boot disk, confirm that the driver starts early enough for the guest to mount its root volume. After the change, check disk identity, interface naming, static addresses, firewall rules and service bindings. Keep the previous device definition available until the new configuration has survived a reboot.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing machine type or firmware

Schedule downtime unless your test proves the change is safe. Export or back up the VM configuration, note the prior machine type and firmware, and confirm the guest’s partition and bootloader requirements. If the guest does not boot, restore the previous machine type or firmware first; troubleshoot the guest conversion separately rather than changing several variables at once.

Common failure modes and fixes

The VM will not migrate

Check for a host CPU model on unlike nodes, custom flags unavailable on the destination, physical-address-bit differences, passthrough devices or a machine type that the target software does not provide. Move to a common generic CPU baseline, remove or redesign host-bound devices, or align the destination’s software and hardware capabilities.

The guest loses its boot disk

The usual cause is a controller change without a loaded guest driver, or a firmware change that no longer matches the partition and bootloader layout. Restore the prior controller or firmware, install the required driver using the guest’s recovery process, and repeat the change only after a verified backup.

The network interface appears new

Changing the virtual network model can cause the guest to create a new interface identity. Reapply the intended address and naming configuration, remove stale definitions only after confirming the new interface works, and check services that bind to a specific interface name.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A workload needs an instruction extension that is missing

Confirm that the extension exists on every node where the VM must run. If all eligible nodes support it, choose an appropriate generic CPU baseline or a carefully documented custom model. If only one host provides it, exposing the feature may be incompatible with live migration; keeping the VM on that host is a deliberate availability trade-off.

Operational checklist

  • Keep the machine type stable for established guests.
  • Match the CPU model to the entire migration domain, not just the current server.
  • Use host only with identical CPU models and compatible features on all destinations.
  • Use the highest common x86-64-v<X> baseline for heterogeneous or growing clusters.
  • Prefer VirtIO storage and networking after confirming guest-driver support.
  • Retain emulated devices when legacy compatibility is the priority.
  • Document custom CPU flags and avoid host-dependent physical-address settings when migration matters.
  • Treat firmware changes, machine-type changes and passthrough as planned compatibility changes.
  • Test reboot and migration after each hardware change.
