Proxima Centauri is part of the Alpha Centauri system. It is the same star astronomers also call Alpha Centauri C. “Alpha Centauri” can mean either the bright binary pair Alpha Centauri A and B or the complete three-star system that includes Proxima. They are therefore not two unrelated destinations: Proxima is one member of Alpha Centauri, while Alpha Centauri A and B are the close pair at the system’s center.
The practical distinction is scope. Proxima is one cool red-dwarf star with three confirmed planets, including Proxima b. Alpha Centauri A and B are two more Sun-like stars orbiting each other, with a possible but not yet confirmed giant planet reported around A. All three stars lie roughly 4.25–4.3 light-years from Earth.

The names refer to different scopes
The apparent disagreement between “Proxima Centauri” and “Alpha Centauri” comes from using one name for a star and another for a larger system. Astronomy catalogs use several labels because the system contains three gravitationally related stars.
Proxima Centauri is Alpha Centauri C
Proxima Centauri and Alpha Centauri C are two names for the same individual star. “Proxima” means nearest, reflecting its current position as the nearest individual star to Earth. The letter C identifies it as the third member of the Alpha Centauri system, alongside A and B.

Proxima is a small, cool red dwarf. It is much less massive and luminous than the two bright stars usually associated with the name Alpha Centauri. Its low brightness does not make it unimportant: it is the member around which astronomers have confirmed three planets.
Alpha Centauri A and B form the close binary
Alpha Centauri A and Alpha Centauri B are separate stars orbiting one another closely. Together they are called Alpha Centauri AB, or simply the Alpha Centauri binary. A is a near-Sun twin; B is somewhat smaller and dimmer.
When an observer says “Alpha Centauri” while discussing the bright pair visible in the southern sky, the intended object is often this A/B binary rather than Proxima. That shorthand is understandable, but it does not mean Proxima is excluded from the system.

In its broadest and most precise usage, the Alpha Centauri system means Alpha Centauri A, Alpha Centauri B and Proxima Centauri together. NASA describes it as a triple-star system. A and B make the tight inner pair; Proxima is the distant third member bound to that pair.
How many stars are in Alpha Centauri?
There are three known stars in the Alpha Centauri system:
| Star | Other designation | Relationship | General type |
|---|---|---|---|
| Alpha Centauri A | Alpha Centauri A | One member of the close A/B binary | Near-Sun twin |
| Alpha Centauri B | Alpha Centauri B | Other member of the close A/B binary | Somewhat smaller and dimmer than A |
| Proxima Centauri | Alpha Centauri C | Distant third member orbiting the A/B pair | Small, cool red dwarf |
Calling Proxima “outside Alpha Centauri” is incorrect when Alpha Centauri means the full system. Calling Proxima “the same star as Alpha Centauri A” is also incorrect: Proxima is a separate star, and A is one of the two stars in the bright binary.

Distance from Earth: Proxima is nearest, but the difference is small
NASA pages place the Alpha Centauri system at approximately 4.25–4.3 light-years from Earth. A light-year is a distance, not a travel time: it is how far light moves in one year.

Proxima currently holds the nearest-star-to-Earth distinction. Alpha Centauri AB is a very close second, so the distance difference is small on an interstellar scale. “Nearest” in this context means nearest individual star, not a separate system located far away from Alpha Centauri.
The exact figure can vary slightly by page and rounding. A statement such as “Alpha Centauri is 4.3 light-years away” is normally referring to the system as a whole, while “Proxima is about 4.25 light-years away” emphasizes the individual star’s current position relative to Earth.
How the three-star orbit is arranged
Alpha Centauri A and B complete an approximately 80-year orbit
The A and B stars are a close binary. NASA’s 2024 presentation gives an orbital period of about 80 years for their mutual orbit. Their positions relative to each other change noticeably over a human lifetime, even though both remain part of the same gravitationally bound pair.
Proxima follows a much longer orbit around the pair
Proxima is much farther from A and B than they are from each other. NASA’s 2024 presentation says Proxima takes more than half a million years to complete an orbit around the A/B pair. From a short-term observing perspective, Proxima can look like a nearby neighboring star; dynamically, it is the wide third member of the same system.

What kind of stars are they?
Alpha Centauri A: the near-Sun comparison
Alpha Centauri A is described by NASA as a near-Sun twin. That comparison concerns its broad stellar properties: it is a relatively Sun-like star rather than a cool, low-luminosity red dwarf. It is the brighter primary of the A/B pair.
Alpha Centauri B: smaller and dimmer than A
Alpha Centauri B is also part of the close binary, but it is somewhat smaller and dimmer than A. It is still fundamentally different from Proxima: B belongs to the bright pair, whereas Proxima is a much smaller, cooler red dwarf on the system’s wide outer orbit.
Proxima Centauri: a cool red dwarf
Proxima is a red dwarf, a category of low-mass, cool stars. Its lower luminosity means that a planet must orbit much closer to Proxima than Earth orbits the Sun to receive a comparable amount of visible and infrared energy. That close-in setting is important when evaluating both its planets and its exposure to stellar activity.
Planets: confirmed worlds around Proxima and a candidate around A
Proxima has three confirmed planets
NASA’s 2025 Webb report says that three planets are confirmed to orbit Proxima Centauri. The best-characterized example in the supplied NASA/JPL-Caltech material is Proxima b.
- Proxima b’s mass: 1.27 Earth masses, as presented by NASA/JPL-Caltech in 2024.
- Proxima b’s orbital period: 11 days, according to the same 2024 NASA/JPL-Caltech presentation.
- System status: Proxima is the member of Alpha Centauri with three confirmed orbiting planets in the cited NASA material.
An 11-day year does not by itself tell us whether Proxima b is habitable. Because Proxima is much dimmer than the Sun, a short orbital period can still place a planet in the star’s nominal habitable zone.
A possible giant planet around Alpha Centauri A remains unconfirmed
A 2025 Webb result reported strong evidence for a possible giant planet around Alpha Centauri A. The wording matters: the result is evidence for a candidate, not a final confirmation. It should not be counted alongside Proxima’s three confirmed planets as an established discovery.

Until additional observations validate the signal and establish the object’s nature, the careful comparison is “three confirmed planets around Proxima and a possible giant planet around Alpha Centauri A.” A candidate can become confirmed later, but its status should not be upgraded in current explanations.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHabitable-zone location is not proof of life
Being in a habitable zone means receiving an estimated range of stellar energy that could allow liquid water on a suitable surface. It does not demonstrate that a planet has an atmosphere, stable surface water or life. NASA states that Proxima b’s atmosphere cannot yet be checked with available capability, so its actual habitability remains unknown.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Radiation makes Proxima’s environment a harder habitability case
Proxima’s red-dwarf nature affects the radiation environment as well as the orbital scale. NASA’s 2018 Chandra discussion reports that a habitable-zone planet around Proxima receives about 500 times Earth’s average X-ray dose and, during a large flare, can receive up to 50,000 times Earth’s average.
Those figures describe X-ray exposure reported for a planet in Proxima’s habitable-zone environment. They are not a measurement of an atmosphere on Proxima b, and they do not prove that the planet is sterile. They do show why atmospheric retention and surface conditions are central uncertainties: repeated high-energy outbursts can erode or alter an atmosphere, while the outcome depends on magnetic fields, atmospheric composition, geological activity and other factors that have not been established.
The Chandra summary presents the Alpha Centauri AB environment as quieter in this respect, describing it as better news for the ability of possible life on planets around the pair to survive radiation bouts from the stars. “Quieter” is a comparative characterization, not a guarantee that any hypothetical planet around A or B would be habitable.
Proxima Centauri versus Alpha Centauri at a glance
| Question | Proxima Centauri | Alpha Centauri |
|---|---|---|
| What is it? | One individual star | Usually the A/B binary; in broad usage, the complete three-star system |
| Alternative name | Alpha Centauri C | Alpha Centauri AB for the close pair; “Alpha Centauri system” for all three |
| Number of stars | One | Two when referring to AB; three when referring to the full system |
| Stellar character | Small, cool red dwarf | A is a near-Sun twin; B is smaller and dimmer; the system also includes Proxima |
| Distance from Earth | Approximately 4.25–4.3 light-years for the system’s nearest member | Approximately 4.25–4.3 light-years for the system |
| Orbital relationship | Wide third member orbiting A and B in more than half a million years | A and B orbit each other in about 80 years; Proxima is the distant third member |
| Planet evidence | Three confirmed planets; Proxima b is 1.27 Earth masses with an 11-day period in NASA/JPL-Caltech’s 2024 presentation | Strong evidence for a possible giant planet around A, not final confirmation |
| Radiation context | A habitable-zone planet receives about 500 times Earth’s average X-ray dose, rising to up to 50,000 times during a large flare | The AB environment is described as more favorable than Proxima’s for surviving stellar radiation, without a stated guarantee of habitability |
Why people commonly mix up the terms
The brightest stars dominate casual usage
Alpha Centauri A and B are the conspicuous pair, so popular descriptions often use “Alpha Centauri” for them alone. Proxima is far dimmer and is identified separately in most observing and exoplanet discussions. Both conventions appear in legitimate astronomy writing; the surrounding context determines whether the author means AB or all three stars.
Best Value
The letter system resolves the ambiguity
Use the component letters when precision matters:
- A: the near-Sun-like primary of the close pair.
- B: the somewhat smaller and dimmer companion in that pair.
- C: Proxima, the distant third member.
Use Alpha Centauri AB for the binary and Alpha Centauri system for the complete three-star arrangement. Use Proxima Centauri when discussing the red dwarf or its planets.
Which name should you use?
Use “Proxima Centauri” when discussing its planets or activity
Articles about Proxima b, the three confirmed planets, red-dwarf flares or the high X-ray environment should name Proxima directly. “Alpha Centauri C” is a useful synonym when explaining the system’s architecture.
Use “Alpha Centauri AB” for the close binary
When the subject is the two bright stars orbiting one another, Alpha Centauri AB is the clearest label. It avoids implying that Proxima is part of the tight 80-year pair.

Bottom line
Proxima Centauri and Alpha Centauri are not separate systems. Proxima Centauri is Alpha Centauri C, the distant third star in the Alpha Centauri triple system. Alpha Centauri A and B are the close binary and the stars most often meant by the shorter name “Alpha Centauri.” Proxima is currently the nearest individual star, has three confirmed planets and faces intense red-dwarf radiation; A and B are more Sun-like, orbit each other in about 80 years and have only a possible, not confirmed, giant planet reported around A.
