ProtonVPN.exe is the graphical Windows program for Proton VPN. It is not a VPN protocol by itself: when you launch it, the interface starts the Proton VPN Windows service and works with OpenVPN, the TAP-ProtonVPN Windows Adapter V9, firewall rules, and a split-tunnel callout driver. On an official installation, the executable is normally under C:Program FilesProtonVPN<version>.
If ProtonVPN.exe will not open or connect, repairing only the visible EXE may not help. Check the Windows service, Base Filtering Engine, network adapter, firewall, and the app’s logs in the order below.

What ProtonVPN.exe does
ProtonVPN.exe is the main graphical executable in Proton VPN’s official Windows client. It provides the sign-in screen, server list, connection controls, settings, profiles, and status display. The Windows app is designed for authenticated Proton VPN users on free or paid service plans.

Normal installation location
The official installer normally places the GUI in C:Program FilesProtonVPN<version>, where the version folder reflects the installed release. A file with the same name in a temporary folder, a browser-download cache, or an unexpected user-profile directory is not automatically malicious, but it deserves verification before you run it.
Logs that identify the failing component

Open File Explorer, paste either path into the address bar, and inspect the newest entries immediately after reproducing the problem. A GUI log can show an interface or authentication failure; a service log is more useful when the window opens but a connection never completes.
Is ProtonVPN.exe safe?
The name alone cannot prove that an arbitrary copy is genuine. ProtonVPN.exe is expected on a properly installed Proton VPN Windows client, but malware can use a familiar filename. Treat the file as trusted only after checking its source, location, publisher, and behavior.

Verify the source and path
- Download the installer from Proton’s official Windows download page or obtain the application from Proton’s official software repository. Avoid repackaged installers, cracks, and unsolicited email attachments.
- In Task Manager, right-click the Proton VPN process and choose Open file location. The expected location is under
C:Program FilesProtonVPN<version>. - Right-click the file, choose Properties, and open Digital Signatures. Select the listed signature, choose Details, and confirm that Windows reports a valid signature and a publisher consistent with Proton. If there is no signature, the signature is invalid, or the signer is unrelated, do not launch that copy.
- Run your installed security software’s scan on the file and on the downloaded installer. A clean scan is useful evidence, not a guarantee that every unknown file is safe.
Signs that need investigation
- The executable runs from
%TEMP%, a random folder under%APPDATA%, or a removable drive instead of the program folder. - Windows shows a different publisher, an invalid signature, or repeated elevation prompts that do not coincide with an update or installation.
- A second process with a nearly identical spelling consumes unusual CPU, creates unexplained network connections, or appears only after opening an unrelated download.
Quarantine a suspicious copy with your security software, preserve the file’s location and signature details for review, and reinstall the client from Proton’s official source rather than replacing the file with one downloaded from a third-party site.

Supported Windows versions and installation
Proton’s current Windows guide supports 64-bit Windows 10, build 19045, and later. The download page provides separate x64 and ARM64 builds. Choose the architecture that matches Windows: open Settings > System > About and check System type before downloading.
Install Proton VPN from the official installer
- Download the x64 or ARM64 Windows installer from Proton’s official Windows page.
- Double-click the downloaded EXE. When User Account Control asks whether the installer may make changes, check the publisher and select Yes only if you initiated the download.
- Select a language in the setup wizard.
- Accept the proposed Start-menu folder or choose a different one.
- Review the optional installation of other Proton applications and clear any option you do not want.
- Finish the wizard, then open Proton VPN from the Start menu and sign in.
After installation, confirm that the program folder contains the GUI and that Windows has installed the service and network components described below. Proton’s support guidance identifies its dedicated Windows app as the preferred way to use Proton VPN on Windows 10 and later.
Components installed alongside the GUI
ProtonVPN.exe is only one part of the client. The following components explain why deleting or replacing the EXE manually can leave a broken installation.

Why ProtonVPN.exe will not start or connect
Use this sequence so that each check narrows the cause without deleting networking components prematurely.
1. Confirm Windows and architecture support
Check that the computer is running 64-bit Windows 10 build 19045 or later, or a supported Windows 11 release. If you installed an x64 package on an ARM64 system, or the reverse, download the matching build and reinstall it. Pending Windows restarts can also prevent a service or driver update from completing, so restart once before deeper repair.
2. Check the Proton VPN Service
- Press
Win+R, enterservices.msc, and press Enter. - Find Proton VPN Service.
- If it is stopped, choose Start. If it is already running, choose Restart and then launch ProtonVPN.exe again.
- Record any Windows error shown when the service starts; an account, dependency, or permission error points away from the GUI file.
Do not remove the service manually. The supported installer and uninstaller are responsible for registering and removing it.
3. Verify Base Filtering Engine
Proton’s Windows support material identifies the Windows Base Filtering Engine as a requirement. In services.msc, locate Base Filtering Engine and verify that it is running. If Windows cannot start it, repair that Windows service first; VPN firewall and kill-switch rules may fail while it is unavailable.

4. Inspect the virtual adapter and drivers
Open Device Manager > Network adapters. Look for TAP-ProtonVPN Windows Adapter V9 and any Proton split-tunneling callout driver. A down-arrow, yellow warning icon, or missing adapter indicates a driver installation problem. Reboot once, then run the Proton VPN installer again so it can repair the components. Avoid downloading a generic TAP driver from an unrelated site, because the Proton client expects its own component and configuration.
5. Check firewall and security software without weakening protection
Windows Firewall or a third-party security product can block the service, OpenVPN, or the adapter. Review the product’s blocked-app and network-event history and allow the signed Proton VPN application and service when prompted. Do not leave the firewall or antivirus disabled as a permanent workaround. If a temporary, supervised test with a third-party firewall confirms interference, restore protection immediately and create a narrow allow rule instead.
6. Test protocol and split-tunnel settings
If the window opens but connections fail, temporarily choose another supported protocol, such as WireGuard instead of OpenVPN, and disable a custom split-tunnel rule for the test. A connection that works only after split tunneling is disabled points to the callout driver or an application rule rather than ProtonVPN.exe itself. Re-enable features one at a time after a successful connection.
7. Read the logs and compare the installed release
Capture the GUI and service logs immediately after a failed launch or connection. Also check Proton’s current release notes: the stable release listed on September 8, 2026 was 5.1.8, which included a fix for split-tunneling include mode when using Proton protocols. Version numbers and feature behavior are volatile, so use the release notes for the version actually installed rather than assuming an older workaround still applies.

How to reinstall Proton VPN cleanly
Reinstalling is appropriate when the service, adapter, or program files are inconsistent, but perform the supported uninstall first so Windows can remove registered components.
- Save any settings you need to recreate, then close Proton VPN.
- On Windows 11, open Start > Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Proton VPN, select the three-dot menu, and choose Uninstall.
- On Windows 10, open Start > Settings > Apps > Apps & features, select Proton VPN, and choose Uninstall.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows. The restart lets Windows release the service, adapter, and firewall handles.
- Download a fresh installer matching x64 or ARM64 from Proton’s official Windows page and repeat the installation steps.
- Launch the new installation, sign in, and test a basic connection before restoring custom DNS, split tunneling, or kill-switch settings.
If Windows still lists a stale Proton VPN entry or the adapter remains after the supported uninstall, do not delete random registry keys or driver files. Record the remaining component and use Proton’s Windows support instructions for that specific removal problem.
How to uninstall ProtonVPN.exe and the client
There is no separate supported uninstall for only ProtonVPN.exe. Remove the application through Windows Settings so the service, OpenVPN files, TAP adapter, split-tunnel driver, and firewall integration are handled together.

Restart after the wizard finishes. If you intend to reinstall, download a new official installer rather than running an old copy left in Downloads.
