Wine is the general-purpose compatibility layer for running Windows applications on Linux. Proton is Valve’s Wine-based, Steam-integrated tool for running Windows games. They share core technology, but Proton adds game-focused graphics components, Steam integration and per-game management. Use Wine as the starting point for a standalone Windows application; use Proton for a Windows game in Steam.
Neither tool is a virtual machine, and neither guarantees that a particular program will work. The application’s version, graphics requirements, launcher, digital-rights management and online anti-cheat technology can all change the result.

The short answer: choose by workload
Wine and Proton are related, not competing products aimed at exactly the same job. Wine’s project scope covers Windows applications on POSIX-compatible systems, including Linux, macOS and BSD. Proton is a tool supplied for use with the Steam client; it combines a modified version of Wine with graphics API implementations intended to make Windows games run on Linux.

Think of Proton as a game-oriented distribution of Wine and related components rather than as a completely different compatibility technology.

What Wine is
A compatibility layer, not a Windows virtual machine
Wine translates or implements Windows application interfaces so that software can run on the Linux host. It does not ask you to install a complete Windows operating system as a guest. That distinction affects resource use, file locations, configuration and troubleshooting: you are managing a compatibility environment inside Linux, not booting a second operating system.
The project name originally expanded to “Wine Is Not an Emulator.” The practical point is that Wine is intended to provide Windows interfaces on a POSIX host rather than emulate a different processor architecture. Applications still depend on the interfaces they call, so success varies by program and version.
Wine’s scope
Wine’s stated scope is broad: Windows applications on several POSIX-compliant systems, such as Linux, macOS and BSD. A productivity program, utility, installer or older business application may therefore be a Wine use case even when Steam is not involved.

A program can fail because it expects a Windows component that is not implemented, a particular graphics feature, a proprietary launcher, a digital-rights check or a service that cannot run in the compatibility environment. Treat compatibility as a property of the specific application and release, not of the Windows label alone.
What Proton is
Wine plus a Steam-focused bundle
Valve describes Proton as the compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux by using a modified version of Wine and a collection of high-performance graphics API implementations. Those additions are aimed at the workloads games create: 3D rendering, modern graphics APIs, controller and display behavior, launchers and Steam’s delivery model.
Proton is used through the Steam client. Steam can download a compatibility tool, associate it with a game and keep the game’s Windows-like environment separate from other titles. This makes the first attempt much simpler than assembling and maintaining every component manually.

Why Proton feels different from a plain Wine setup
With a standalone Wine installation, you generally decide how to install Wine, where to place an application, which compatibility environment to use and how to supply any required Windows components. Proton shifts much of that work into Steam’s game settings and content management.
Recommended Free Tools
That convenience is specific to Steam games. Proton’s packaging and launch behavior are optimized for Steam’s expectations, so it should not be treated as a universal replacement for Wine when the software is an installer, office application or game obtained elsewhere.
What Proton adds to the shared foundation
Modified Wine components
Proton starts with Wine but changes and configures it for games. The exact contents and behavior can change as Proton releases evolve, so a result from one version should not be generalized to every other version.
Graphics API implementations
Windows games often target graphics APIs that are not exposed in the same way on Linux. Proton includes graphics API implementations designed to bridge that gap. This is a major reason a game can work in Proton even though a generic Wine attempt needs additional configuration—or why changing Proton versions can alter a game’s behavior.
Steam integration and launch options
Steam handles installation, updates and selection of a compatibility tool. It also provides per-game launch options. Valve’s Proton documentation describes a PROTON_LOG=1 option that can generate a log for troubleshooting. Logging is most useful after you have reproduced a specific failure and need technical details; it does not make an incompatible game compatible by itself.
Per-game prefixes
Steam Play creates a separate Wine prefix for each game. Valve’s FAQ identifies the usual location as steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/ inside the relevant Steam library. A prefix is the game’s simulated Windows environment, including its registry-like configuration, drive mappings and installed components. Per-game isolation prevents one title’s changes from automatically altering another title.

How to run a standalone Windows application with Wine
Wine is the sensible first tool when the software is not a Steam game. Distribution packaging and desktop integration differ, so the exact package-manager command depends on your Linux distribution. Use your distribution’s current Wine package instructions, then work through the application’s own installation requirements.
- Identify the exact application and version. Compatibility can change between releases. Record whether it needs a launcher, a graphics acceleration feature, a device driver, a service or an online sign-in.
- Install Wine using your distribution’s supported packages. Avoid mixing unrelated Wine builds until you know which one your distribution supports; changing builds can make troubleshooting harder.
- Create an isolated prefix for the application when practical. Separate prefixes keep configuration and installed components from colliding with another program. Give each prefix a descriptive name so you can identify it later.
- Run the application installer inside that prefix. Follow the vendor’s normal Windows installation steps, but do not assume that a successful installer means every feature will work.
- Launch the program and test its important functions. Check sign-in, file access, printing, hardware acceleration, plug-ins and updates—the features you actually need, not just whether a window opens.
- Document the working configuration. Note the Wine build, prefix location and any required settings. This record makes it easier to recover after an application update.
If the application does not start, first verify that you are using the intended prefix and that the installer completed there. Then check whether the failure is tied to a specific application version or dependency. Wine is the right category of tool for this workload, but choosing Wine does not remove the application’s own compatibility requirements.
How to enable and select Proton for a Steam game
Let Steam choose a supported tool
- Install or open Steam on Linux and locate the game. Native Linux games do not need Proton.
- Enable Steam Play compatibility tools in Steam’s settings. Steam provides options for Valve-supported titles and for other non-native titles. The wording and location of these controls can change with Steam updates.
- Install the Windows game. For a non-native title, Steam downloads the Proton libraries and creates the game’s compatibility environment.
- Launch the game normally. Start with the Proton version Steam recommends or supplies rather than forcing a different version immediately.
Force a Proton version for one game
When a title needs a different version, Canonical’s current Ubuntu guide gives this path: open the game’s Properties, choose Compatibility, enable “Force the use of a Specific Steam Play compatibility tool”, and select the available Proton version. Steam’s labels may change, but the setting remains a per-game choice rather than a global replacement.
Use this control as a troubleshooting option, not as a guarantee. A version that fixes one game can introduce a regression in another, and a game may still fail because of its launcher, DRM or online anti-cheat service.
How to check compatibility before spending time on setup
Check the exact title and release
For Steam games, consult title-specific compatibility information such as ProtonDB before changing multiple settings. Reports can differ by game version, Proton version, graphics hardware and operating-system updates. An “unsupported” label means functionality may vary considerably; it is not a prediction that every user will see the same result.

Separate basic launch from complete functionality
A game reaching its menu is only one checkpoint. Test the modes you intend to use: single-player, cloud saves, controllers, voice chat, downloadable content and multiplayer. For an application, test the files, peripherals or plug-ins that justify running it on Linux.

Look for requirements beyond Wine
- Graphics: the title may require a graphics feature that your driver or the selected Proton version does not expose correctly.
- Launcher dependencies: a separate launcher can fail even when the game executable itself is compatible.
- DRM: copy-protection checks can block startup or updates.
- Online anti-cheat: support is specific to the anti-cheat system and the game’s configuration.
- Version changes: an update to the game, launcher or Proton can change a previously working result.
Anti-cheat and multiplayer limitations
Valve documents support for some common middleware, including Easy Anti-Cheat and BattlEye, but manual configuration can be required. Support is not automatic for every title that uses those systems. Valve also states that kernel-space anti-cheat solutions are not currently supported.
Therefore, “multiplayer game” is not a sufficient compatibility category. Before installing, check the specific game’s current reports and the developer’s anti-cheat configuration. If a game depends on a kernel-space solution, changing Proton versions will not remove that limitation.
Can Proton run Windows applications outside Steam?
Proton’s documented purpose is Steam integration for Windows games. It may be possible to adapt Proton components to another launcher or application, but that is outside the straightforward workflow Valve describes and can require manual prefix, executable and launch-option management. For a standalone Windows application, Wine is the clearer first choice because it is designed for general applications rather than tied to Steam’s game lifecycle.
If the software is a non-Steam game, first check whether its publisher offers a native Linux build or whether a Wine-based tool specifically supports that launcher. Do not assume that a Proton result for one Steam title transfers to an unrelated installer.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsPrefixes, files and isolation
Wine prefixes
A Wine prefix stores an application’s Windows-like configuration and installed files in an isolated directory. Keeping separate prefixes is useful when two programs need conflicting components or settings. It also means you must back up the right directory if you need to preserve an application’s configuration.
Best Value
Proton prefixes
For Steam games, the corresponding prefix is normally under the Steam library’s steamapps/compatdata/[appid]/pfx/ path. The numeric app ID identifies the game. Steam can recreate compatibility data, so avoid deleting a prefix as a first troubleshooting step; doing so can remove per-game settings and locally stored data. Confirm where the game keeps saves before changing or removing files.
Why isolation helps troubleshooting
If one application works and another does not, separate prefixes let you change the failing program without changing the working one. Record the prefix and tool version before experimenting, and change one variable at a time so you can identify which change mattered.
A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Reproduce the failure. Note the exact step: installation, launch, loading a save, joining multiplayer or rendering a particular scene.
- Confirm the workload. Use Wine for a standalone application; use Proton settings for a Steam game. A tool mismatch can add unnecessary complexity.
- Check title-specific compatibility information. Look for reports matching the current application or game version and your intended mode.
- Return to a known baseline. Use the default or recommended Proton version, remove unusual launch options and test in the game’s existing prefix.
- Try one controlled change. For a Steam game, use Properties > Compatibility to force another available Proton version. Do not change the version, launch options and prefix simultaneously.
- Check external blockers. Verify graphics drivers, launchers, DRM and anti-cheat requirements before blaming the compatibility layer.
- Collect a log if needed. Valve documents
PROTON_LOG=1for per-game Proton logging. Use the resulting information to identify a missing component or service rather than treating the log as a fix. - Undo experiments that did not help. Restore the last known working version or prefix backup before trying another branch.
Performance: what can and cannot be concluded
Wine and Proton do not have a universal performance winner. Proton’s graphics implementations and game-specific changes can make it the practical choice for a Steam title, while a standalone application may work best with a regular Wine setup. Results depend on the application, graphics driver, Proton or Wine version and settings.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →No official head-to-head benchmark establishes a general performance advantage in the material available for this comparison. Avoid choosing solely on an assumed frame-rate difference. Verify the exact title and workload instead.
Common decision mistakes
- Using Proton for every Windows program: Proton’s Steam integration is an advantage for Steam games, not a reason to replace Wine for office or utility software.
- Assuming Wine is an emulator or virtual machine: It is a compatibility layer, so Windows drivers and services may not behave as they would in an installed Windows system.
- Treating a compatibility label as a guarantee: Reports are title-specific and can change after updates.
- Changing many variables at once: You lose the ability to tell whether a Proton version, prefix or launch option caused the result.
- Ignoring anti-cheat requirements: Middleware support is conditional, and kernel-space anti-cheat is not currently supported according to Valve.
- Deleting prefixes immediately: A prefix can contain configuration and local data. Back it up or verify save locations first.
Bottom line
Use Wine for standalone Windows applications and Proton for Windows games in Steam. Proton builds on Wine but adds game-focused graphics implementations, Steam-managed installation and per-game prefixes. Start with the tool that matches the workload, then verify the exact application or game because graphics requirements, launchers, DRM, updates and anti-cheat systems determine whether it actually works.
