They overlap, but they solve different problems: Proton is the direct Steam path; Lutris is a multi-store game manager that coordinates runners.
What Proton and Lutris actually are
Proton is Steam’s compatibility tool
Valve describes Proton as “the compatibility layer that allows Windows games to run on Linux by using a modified version of Wine and a collection of high-performance graphics API implementations.” In practical terms, Proton translates the Windows game’s expectations into services Linux can provide, while Steam handles downloading, updating and selecting Proton builds.

Proton is intended to be used from the Steam client. Valve’s Proton repository states: “Most users should use Proton provided by the Steam Client itself.” That is why a Steam purchase normally needs no separate game manager: install the game in Steam, enable Steam Play if necessary, and let Steam apply a Proton version.

Lutris is a library manager built around runners
Lutris describes itself as an open gaming platform and library manager for Linux. It can connect games from services such as Humble Bundle, GOG and Steam, and integrate launchers including Battle.net, Epic Games Store, EA App and Ubisoft Connect. Lutris does not sell games; it helps you install and launch games you obtained from those services. Its FAQ explains that multi-store support is a central purpose.
Instead of one fixed compatibility layer, Lutris uses “runners.” A runner can be a compatibility layer such as Wine or an emulator. During installation, a Lutris entry can specify a runner and configuration appropriate to that game. This makes Lutris useful when the game is outside Steam, when a launcher must be installed first, or when you need to keep several runner configurations in one library.

Choose Proton for a Steam game
If the title is in your Steam library, Proton is the least complicated first attempt. Steam already owns the library metadata, downloads the game and manages the compatibility-tool selection. You do not need to create a second library entry or reproduce the installation in another manager.

This path also keeps Steam’s per-game controls in one place. If the default Proton version gives trouble, you can select another available version for that title and test the result without moving the game. Valve’s Steam Support explanation of Steam Play is deliberately cautious: Windows-only games can “potentially work” on Linux. Treat Proton as the appropriate first path, not a guarantee.
Choose Lutris for a mixed library
Lutris is more practical when you want one Linux interface for games acquired from several stores. Its integrations can place Steam, GOG, Humble Bundle and launcher-based games alongside one another, instead of making you remember which client owns each installation. The benefit is organization and installation control, not a promise that every launcher behaves identically.
Choose Lutris for non-Steam configuration work
A non-Steam installer may need a particular Wine runner, a launcher installed before the game, or a separate prefix and configuration. Lutris exposes those choices as part of a game entry. That is a better fit than forcing a non-Steam title into Steam merely to obtain Proton’s interface.
When neither choice can answer the question alone
If a specific title fails, the name of the manager is only one variable. Anti-cheat technology, a game update, graphics-driver behavior, your Linux distribution, hardware and runner settings can all change the result. Check current compatibility information for the exact game and system before deciding that Proton or Lutris is inherently defective.

How to set up a Steam game with Proton
Use Steam’s supplied Proton first
- Install and start the Steam client on your Linux system, then sign in to the account that owns the game.
- Open Steam’s settings and locate the Steam Play or Compatibility section. The exact label can vary between client releases.
- Enable Steam Play for supported titles. If the client offers a default compatibility tool, leave the Steam-provided Proton selection in place for your first test.
- Install the Windows game from your Steam library. Steam downloads the game and the selected Proton components through its normal installation flow.
- Launch the game normally. If it starts, keep the working configuration and record the Proton version so you can restore it after a later change.
The setting names and available Proton builds can change as Steam updates. The important distinction is that Steam manages the supplied tool; you do not need to download a separate Wine package for this basic path.
Override Proton for one title
For a game that does not work with the default, open that game’s properties in Steam and find its compatibility setting. Enable the option to force a particular Steam Play compatibility tool, then choose another installed Proton version. Test one change at a time so you know which setting affected the result.
Steam also provides a launch-options field for per-game runtime overrides. Valve documents this mechanism in the Proton repository. Use a documented option for the specific problem you are investigating; avoid copying an arbitrary string from an unrelated game, because launch options can alter startup behavior without fixing the underlying compatibility issue.

Install a local Proton build only when you have a reason
Advanced users can install a locally built or otherwise separately obtained Proton tool and select it from Steam’s compatibility settings. Valve notes that Steam must be restarted to detect a newly installed local tool. This route adds maintenance: you must track where the build came from, update it yourself and remove it if it causes regressions. For most players, the client-provided versions remain the sensible baseline.

How to set up a game with Lutris
Choose the Lutris package format deliberately
Lutris’s download guidance says that users running a typical package installation should install a recent Wine version and suitable graphics drivers for Windows games. The same guidance says that this separate Wine installation step is not needed when Lutris is run from Flatpak. Follow the current instructions for your Linux distribution, because package names and driver setup differ by distribution and hardware.
Add the store or launcher that owns the game
- Install Lutris using the package format supported by your distribution or the Flatpak option described in Lutris’s download instructions.
- Open Lutris and use its available service or launcher integration for the store that owns your game. Lutris documents integrations for services and launchers such as GOG, Steam, Battle.net, Epic Games Store, EA App and Ubisoft Connect.
- Sign in to the relevant service when prompted and select the game or installer you want to add. Lutris does not provide a game license; the purchase or account remains with the original store.
- Choose a runner for the entry. For a Windows title this is commonly a Wine-based runner; emulators are used for other platforms.
- Review the installation and runner settings, complete the installer, then launch the game from the Lutris library.
Runner names, installer scripts and available integrations change over time. If an integration is unavailable or an installer fails, use the current Lutris instructions for that service rather than assuming the Steam procedure applies.
Understand the package-versus-Flatpak difference
The Wine requirement is the most important setup distinction documented by Lutris. With a normal distribution package, Wine and graphics drivers are separate prerequisites. With the Flatpak build, Lutris’s instructions say you do not need to install Wine separately. That does not eliminate every permission, driver or launcher issue; it changes how the compatibility components are supplied.

There is no honest universal winner
The official material does not provide a compatibility percentage or a benchmark comparing Proton with Lutris. A manager can be the right choice for the library and still fail on one particular title. Conversely, a game that has trouble in one configuration may work after changing its runner or Proton version.
For a fair comparison, hold the game, Linux distribution, hardware, graphics driver and game version constant. Then compare the configuration that actually launches and plays correctly. A different storefront or launcher can introduce another variable, so do not interpret a launcher failure as proof that the underlying Wine-based compatibility code is slower.
Factors that can change the result
- Anti-cheat: a game’s anti-cheat implementation may restrict Linux play or require a compatible configuration.
- Game updates: a patch can change behavior even when your Proton or Wine version has not changed.
- Graphics drivers: driver quality and version affect rendering and stability.
- Linux distribution: libraries, packaging and defaults differ between distributions.
- Runner or Proton version: a newer build can fix one title and introduce a regression in another.
- Per-game settings: launch options and runner configuration can determine whether a title starts.
Because these variables interact, use current reports for the exact game and hardware. Neither Valve’s Steam Play wording nor Lutris’s platform description supports a blanket claim that all Windows games work.
Troubleshooting: a practical decision path
The Steam game will not launch
- Confirm that Steam Play is enabled and that the game has a selected compatibility tool.
- Retry with another Proton version offered by Steam, changing only that setting.
- Remove any unverified launch option and test the unmodified configuration.
- Check current reports for the exact game, distribution and graphics hardware. Look specifically for notes about anti-cheat or a recent game update.
- If you installed a local Proton build, restart Steam so it can detect the tool, then verify that the per-game selection points to the intended build.
The non-Steam Lutris game fails during installation
- Identify whether you installed Lutris as a distribution package or Flatpak; the Wine prerequisite differs.
- For a package installation, verify that a recent Wine version and working graphics drivers are installed as required by Lutris’s download guidance.
- Check that the game’s store or launcher account is valid and that the installer is still available from that service.
- Try the runner recommended for that Lutris entry before changing several options at once.
- Search for current reports for the game and runner combination. Record the runner version and any error message before switching configurations.
The game launches but behaves badly
Separate startup problems from in-game problems. A successful launch does not prove that every feature works. Test the title after a game update, graphics-driver update or runner change, and keep the last known-good configuration. If the issue is limited to one store launcher, compare the same game’s behavior without changing the underlying hardware or distribution.
Can Lutris replace Proton, or can Proton replace Lutris?
They are not direct substitutes. Proton is the compatibility layer Steam integrates into Steam Play; Lutris is the manager that organizes games and assigns runners. A Steam-only player can use Proton without Lutris. A player with several launchers can use Lutris to organize the library while selecting an appropriate runner for each entry.
Using Lutris for a Steam-owned game may add a second layer of library and account management without solving a problem. Using Steam alone for every non-Steam installer may hide the runner and launcher controls that made Lutris attractive. Pick the layer that addresses your actual obstacle: Steam integration, or multi-store and runner management.
A simple choice checklist
- Game purchased on Steam: install and test it with Steam’s Proton first.
- Games purchased from several stores: use Lutris to consolidate the library and launcher entries.
- Non-Steam installer with custom Wine needs: use Lutris and select the runner appropriate to that title.
- Need a different Proton build for a Steam title: stay in Steam and use its per-game compatibility selection; install a local build only if the supplied versions do not meet your need.
- Game still fails: investigate the exact title, update, anti-cheat behavior, driver, distribution and runner settings rather than declaring one tool universally better.
Bottom line
Proton is the better first choice for Windows games already in Steam because it is the client-integrated Steam Play path that Valve supports. Lutris is the better organizational and configuration layer for libraries spread across stores and launchers, or for non-Steam games that need a particular runner. Neither guarantees compatibility or performance for every title, so the final decision should follow the game’s store and the configuration it actually supports.
