Proton VPN’s free access associated with Brazil was a temporary initiative for the country’s 2024 elections, not a permanent Free-plan feature. As of August 18, 2026, Proton says it does not offer free servers in Brazil. If you need a Brazilian IP address through Proton VPN, its current guidance points to a paid plan.
What Proton announced in 2024
On March 6, 2024, Proton VPN announced temporary free VPN access in selected countries around their elections. The initiative was part of Proton’s effort to help people facing censorship, misinformation, or political interference. Brazil appeared in the announcement with an election date of October 6, 2024. Proton said access would generally begin two weeks before election day and continue for one week afterward, while allowing for extensions depending on circumstances. Proton’s announcement did not describe Brazil as a permanent addition to the ordinary Free plan.
The announcement also discussed Smart Routing, which Proton describes as bare-metal VPN servers provisioned through trusted partners. That infrastructure detail does not establish that every temporary election endpoint was a conventional, permanently installed server that all Free users could select at will.
When was Brazil’s free access expected?
Applying Proton’s general timing rule to the October 6, 2024 date listed for Brazil gives an approximate window of September 22 through October 13, 2024. Those dates are an inference from the published rule, not a separately confirmed Brazil-specific activation log; Proton also said the window could be extended.

The listed date was associated with Brazil’s 2024 municipal elections, not a presidential election. Although some locations held a second-round municipal vote later, Proton’s announcement does not establish that its temporary access automatically continued through those votes.
Is Proton VPN Brazil free now?
No—not as a regular Free-plan location, according to Proton’s current documentation. Its Brazil server page says, “Proton VPN doesn’t provide free servers in Brazil.” Proton lists these countries for its Free plan: the Netherlands, Japan, Romania, Poland, Norway, Switzerland, Singapore, Mexico, Canada, and the United States. Brazil is not on that list. Proton’s Free-plan support page explains that Free users are assigned a free server and cannot manually choose a country in the usual connection flow.
Quick Connect is not a way to request Brazil: it selects a suitable available free server, not a country chosen by the user. Free users can use Change server to switch, but Proton selects another location randomly. The support page specifies a 45-second countdown for the first change and 10-minute intervals for later changes; app labels and paths can change with updates.

How to get a Brazilian IP address with Proton VPN
Proton’s current route to selecting Brazil is a paid plan. The live app is the best guide to the available locations and labels, since its interface and server network may change.
- Choose a paid VPN plan: Review Proton’s current plans at Proton’s plans page.
- Install and sign in: Download the Proton VPN app for your device and sign in to your account.
- Open the country list or map: Go to Countries, then search for or select Brazil.
- Connect: Choose a Brazilian server shown in the app and wait for the connection to complete.
- Check the result: Use an independent IP-location checker to see whether your public IP appears to be in Brazil. If location matters for a particular service, also check for DNS or WebRTC leaks and review the site’s location permissions.
Proton says paid access supports up to 10 devices simultaneously; check its Brazil page for the current offer. An IP-location checker is a useful diagnostic, not a guarantee: geolocation databases can lag or disagree with the endpoint’s actual routing.
What the Free plan can still do
If you do not need a Brazilian exit IP, Proton VPN Free may still suit basic VPN use. Proton says the Free plan has no data limits, and its available locations can encrypt traffic when you are on public Wi-Fi or want a VPN connection without paying. Connecting to a country farther away can add latency, and the Free plan’s automatic country selection makes it unsuitable when a particular location is essential.

- Free can fit: general encrypted browsing when you can accept one of Proton’s available free locations.
- Free is a poor fit: a required Brazilian IP, stable selection of a specific Brazilian city, or a service that rejects shared VPN addresses.
- Paid may fit: manual country selection or paid features such as streaming support, P2P, or Secure Core, subject to Proton’s current plan terms and the service involved.
Proton describes its service as no-logs, protected by Swiss privacy law, and supported by open-source apps. Those are Proton’s product and policy claims, not a promise that no account, payment, diagnostic, abuse-prevention, or operational data is ever processed. A VPN can help bypass some network restrictions, but effectiveness varies with the network, blocking method, and protocol.
Why people use a Brazilian VPN endpoint
A Brazilian IP can help with tasks that depend on apparent connection location: testing a website’s Brazilian version, checking localized content, accessing a service intended for users connecting from Brazil, or using a Brazilian endpoint while traveling abroad. It can also be useful for testing how a site behaves from another country. A VPN encrypts the connection between your device and the VPN server, which can reduce exposure on untrusted networks.

Why Proton has had Brazilian servers before
The 2024 election initiative was distinct from Proton’s established paid Brazilian service. Proton announced its first Brazilian VPN servers in São Paulo on September 25, 2018. The launch described four servers, with BR #1 assigned to Basic users and BR #2–4 to Plus and Visionary users. Those are historical plan names and allocations, not a guide to today’s tiers. The same announcement described Brazilian IP access, lower latency for South American users, and a Brazil Secure Core exit server for eligible paid subscribers. Proton’s 2018 announcement documents that launch.
Brazil also featured in Proton’s later account of censorship-related activity. Proton reported that signups from Brazil rose to about 600% above its day-to-day average during the 2024 dispute involving X and Brazilian Justice Alexandre de Moraes. That is Proton’s own reported measurement, not an independently audited market statistic, and it does not show that the election-related free access remained available. Proton’s 2024 retrospective provides its account.
Troubleshoot a Brazilian connection
Brazil does not appear in the app
That is expected for a Free account under Proton’s current documentation. A Free user’s server changes do not provide manual country selection; a Brazilian endpoint requires paid access according to Proton’s current Brazil page.

- Next-Gen Gigabit Wi-Fi 6 Speeds: 2402 Mbps on 5 GHz and 574 Mbps on 2.4 GHz bands ensure smoother streaming and faster downloads; support VPN server and VPN client¹
- A More Responsive Experience: Enjoy smooth gaming, video streaming, and live feeds simultaneously. OFDMA makes your Wi-Fi stronger by allowing multiple clients to share one band at the same time, cutting latency and jitter.²
- Expanded Wi-Fi Coverage: 4 high-gain external antennas and Beamforming technology combine to extend strong, reliable, Wi-Fi throughout your home.
- Improved Battery Life: Target Wake Time helps your devices to communicate efficiently while consuming less power.
- Improved Cooling Design: No heat ups, no throttles. A larger heat sink and redefined case design cools the WiFi 6 system and enables your network to stay at top speeds in more versatile environments.
A website still identifies another country
First confirm the public IP shown by an independent checker. If it appears Brazilian but a site does not, possible causes include stale geolocation records, browser location permission, GPS or Wi-Fi location data, DNS or WebRTC leaks, VPN detection, or account and CDN settings. Try a private browser window, deny the site’s location permission, and check DNS and WebRTC separately. A VPN connection cannot guarantee that a site will treat your account as Brazilian.
Streaming or another service does not work
Providers can block known VPN IP ranges, and access also depends on their licensing, account, and regional rules. Proton advertises streaming support for paid servers, but that does not guarantee access to every Brazilian streaming service—or to any particular bank, government portal, or website.
Connection performance is poor
Speed depends on your physical distance from the endpoint, ISP routing, congestion, VPN protocol, device and local network quality, and whether the route uses Smart Routing or a directly located server. Proton’s 2024 announcement was about expanding access; it did not guarantee a particular speed.
