Recommended Free Tools
Verdict: Proton Pass is a credible cross-platform password manager whose free plan covers the essentials—unlimited logins, devices, notes and cards—while Plus adds unlimited aliases, integrated two-factor authentication, sharing, monitoring and advanced recovery tools. Proton documents end-to-end encryption, open-source apps and independent audits, but those are provider claims rather than a substitute for reading audit reports. The main privacy qualification is important: Pass vault data is encrypted, while the alias addresses needed for email forwarding are not.
What Proton Pass includes
Pass stores passwords, passkeys, secure notes and payment-card details, then makes them available through apps, browser extensions, a web app and (on paid plans) a command-line interface. Proton’s product information covers Windows, macOS, Linux, Android and iOS, plus major browser extensions. A platform listing does not prove identical feature parity in every client, so check the exact browser and device combinations you use before migrating. Proton’s download page lists the current clients.
Passkeys are available on every Pass plan. They use a public/private key pair instead of a reusable password, but a passkey can only be used when the website or service itself supports passkeys. Proton’s passkey documentation explains the feature and its limits.
Free Pass versus paid plans
The free tier is unusually complete for basic personal use. Proton’s live pricing page is the authority for current entitlements; prices and billing terms can vary by country, billing period and promotion, so check the selector or checkout immediately before subscribing. When Plus or a bundle makes sense
Plus is aimed at people who will actually use unlimited aliases, built-in 2FA, secure vault or link sharing, attachments, monitoring, emergency access or custom-domain aliases. Family is relevant when up to six people need separate use under one plan. Proton Unlimited can be good value only if you also want the other Proton services in that bundle; do not assume the bundle is cheaper without checking the current regional price.
Security and privacy: what Proton claims, and the qualification
Proton says Pass vault items use 256-bit AES-GCM encryption. Its documentation also describes OpenPGP with Curve25519 for protecting vault keys and sharing, and says the apps are open source and independently audited. These statements describe Proton’s design and disclosures; the materials do not establish the scope or date of the latest audit, so they should not be read as a particular audit finding. Proton states: “Not only are your usernames and passwords encrypted, but all metadata is also secure – not even Proton can access this data.” That statement needs to be read alongside the privacy policy. The policy, last modified July 31, 2025, says Pass credentials, passwords, notes and metadata are end-to-end encrypted and Proton cannot decrypt them. It separately says alias addresses created in Pass are not encrypted because forwarding requires Proton to know those addresses. Some alias functionality is hosted on European cloud servers contracted through Proton subsidiary SimpleLogin SAS rather than infrastructure owned directly by Proton. Read the Pass privacy policy.
In practical terms, Pass provides a strong provider-documented encryption model for vault contents, but “everything is encrypted” is too broad: forwarding addresses are an explicit exception.

Devices, browsers and everyday use
Proton lists Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS, browser extensions and a web app. The available documentation does not provide independent measurements of launch speed, autofill accuracy, battery use or synchronization reliability. Verify the browsers, operating systems and workflows that matter to you rather than treating the platform list as proof that every feature behaves identically everywhere.
Passkeys in practice
Passkeys are included on all plans and can reduce phishing risk because the private key is not shared with the service. They remain dependent on support from the individual site or app; Pass cannot add passkey support to a service that has not implemented it.

How to switch from another password manager
- In your current manager, export your vault as a CSV file. Use the manager’s export command and protect the file as you would your master password.
- Install Pass on the devices and browsers you intend to use, then sign in or create your Proton account.
- Use Pass’s import flow to select the CSV. Review the field mapping and let the import finish before closing either app.
- Check high-value records manually: banking logins, passkeys, notes, cards, shared items and any entries with custom fields.
- Delete the exported CSV securely after verifying the import, and remove the old manager only after you have confirmed access on each important device.
Proton’s product FAQ specifically recommends exporting passwords as CSV and importing them into Pass. See the product FAQ and current migration guidance.
Limitations to weigh before subscribing
- No independent comparative speed, autofill or reliability results are established here.
- Exact prices and promotional terms are not fixed; location and billing period can change them.
- Alias addresses are not end-to-end encrypted because forwarding needs them.
- Proton’s competitor comparisons are vendor-authored positioning, not neutral testing.
- CLI access and several advanced features are paid-plan benefits.
Bottom line for different readers
For someone starting from scratch, Proton Pass’s free tier is a sensible first choice: it removes common limits on logins and devices while adding passkeys and a password generator. Pay for Plus when aliases, integrated 2FA, sharing, monitoring or emergency access solve a real need. Choose Family or Unlimited only when multiple users or the broader Proton ecosystem justify the additional cost. Security-conscious users should appreciate Proton’s documented encryption and open-source approach while keeping the alias-address exception—and the lack of independently verified performance comparisons—in view.
