Proton Pass or Dashlane? Choose the Password Manager That Fits in 2026

Proton Pass is the better fit if you want a useful free plan, hide-my-email aliases, and support for Linux; Dashlane is the better fit if you want phishing and scam protection, a VPN bundled with an individual plan, or a family plan for ten accounts. Neither is a universal winner. Compare the features you will actually use and the annual price shown for your region at checkout; Dashlane changed personal-plan prices in February 2026, and a stable price was not available in its published plan text.

At a glance: which service fits your needs?

Your priority Better fit Why
A free plan for an individual Proton Pass Its Free plan includes unlimited logins and devices, passkeys, password-health alerts, and ten hide-my-email aliases. (Proton plan details)
More accounts in one family plan Dashlane Friends & Family is for ten accounts; Proton Pass Family supports up to six users. (Dashlane plan details; Proton plan details)
Aliases and integrated 2FA in a password manager Proton Pass Free includes ten hide-my-email aliases and up to three 2FA items; Pass Plus adds unlimited aliases and 2FA codes. (Proton plan details)
Phishing/scam protection and a VPN bundle Dashlane Its personal plans list AI-powered Scam Protection and Wi-Fi VPN. Friends & Family VPN access is limited to the plan manager. (Dashlane plan details)
Linux support Proton Pass Proton lists a Linux app alongside its web, browser, mobile, and other desktop options. (Proton platform details)

These are differences in plan features and availability, not proof that one service has a stronger security architecture. Neither vendor comparison establishes an independent head-to-head security audit.

What do the free and paid plans include?

Proton Pass: free basics, with privacy features to add

Proton Pass Free includes unlimited logins and devices, password generation, passkey support, weak- and reused-password alerts, import support, ten hide-my-email aliases, and up to three 2FA items. That makes it a practical starting point if you want to try a password manager without an individual subscription.

Pass Plus adds unlimited aliases and 2FA codes, secure vault and link sharing, dark-web monitoring, file attachments, advanced account protection, Emergency Access, custom alias domains, and CLI access. Pass Family extends Plus to up to six users, with an admin panel for one or two plan managers. Check Proton’s current plan details for the full feature breakdown.

#1 Best Overall
Yubico - Security Key C NFC - Basic Compatibility - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-C or NFC, FIDO Certified
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.

Dashlane: paid individual or ten-account family plan

Dashlane’s current personal options are Premium for one user and Friends & Family for ten accounts. Both list unlimited password storage and devices, secure sharing, password generation, dark-web monitoring, AI-powered Scam Protection, Wi-Fi VPN, secure notes with 1 GB encrypted file storage, password history, account recovery options, and 2FA. The VPN is not shared equally across a family plan: invited members do not receive VPN access; the plan manager does. See Dashlane’s current plan comparison.

Dashlane says it no longer sells its former Free, Premium Plus, Premium Plus Family, Essentials, or Advanced plans, and no longer offers monthly subscriptions. Its personal plans are annual subscriptions. The plan comparison was updated September 17, 2026. (Dashlane plan and pricing help)

Password Safe
  • Requires 3 "AAA" batteries (included)
  • Unit auto-locks for 30 minutes after 5 consecutive incorrect PINs
  • Choose Proton Pass Family if six or fewer people need Pass Plus features and its aliases, 2FA, sharing, and monitoring fit your household.
  • Choose Dashlane Friends & Family if you need up to ten accounts and value its protection features. Do not count the VPN as a benefit for invited members; Dashlane limits that access to the plan manager.
  • Check the sharing details before you move family members’ passwords. Secure sharing is listed on both services’ paid plans, but plan membership and a shared vault are not the same thing.

Neither service’s stated account limit alone determines the best household value. Compare the annual checkout total for your region, and confirm which features each person can use.

Aliases, two-factor authentication, and security alerts

Proton Pass stands out if you want to create email aliases from inside the password manager: Free includes ten hide-my-email aliases, while Plus makes aliases unlimited and adds unlimited 2FA codes. Its Free plan’s three-item 2FA allowance may be enough for a small trial, but check the plan limits against how many accounts you intend to protect.

Dashlane emphasizes AI-powered Scam Protection and dark-web monitoring on both current personal plans. Proton Pass Plus also lists dark-web monitoring. Those features address different concerns: aliases can help limit exposure of your primary email, 2FA adds a sign-in step, and monitoring or scam alerts can surface potential risks. They do not replace unique passwords or careful review of unexpected links and messages.

Passkeys, device support, and security claims

Both services support passkeys, but feature availability can differ by app. Dashlane documents passkey management on web, Android, iPhone, and macOS; it also says passwordless login with a security key is available in the web app for personal plans. Check the relevant platform row in its device and feature documentation rather than assuming every feature works identically everywhere. A security key is optional, not a requirement for ordinary password-manager use.

Proton lists apps for iOS, Android, Windows, macOS, and Linux, along with a web app and browser extensions. That makes it the clearer choice if Linux support matters. Its product page says saved passwords, passkeys, credit cards, usernames, and web addresses are protected with end-to-end encryption; this is Proton’s own description, not an independent finding. (Proton platform and product details)

Dashlane’s plan comparison describes its security features, including account 2FA and phishing alerts. The available product information does not establish a direct cryptographic equivalence between the services or independently rank their security. Choose using the protections and platforms you need, not a blanket claim that one is “more secure.”

What will Dashlane cost in 2026?

Dashlane announced personal-plan price changes for its website and app stores starting in mid-February 2026. Its September 8, 2026 help article says existing customers are notified before renewal when their price changes. Because the published plan text does not provide a stable current numeric price, check the annual total at checkout for your country before subscribing or renewing. Confirm the billing period and the plan shown; do not rely on an older monthly price or legacy tier. (Dashlane pricing-change notice; Dashlane pricing)

Use the same discipline when comparing Proton’s paid plans: compare the total and billing period presented for your region, and make sure you are weighing equivalent needs, such as a single-user plan against a single-user plan or a household plan against a household plan.

Moving from another password manager

Proton’s published workflow is to export logins from your existing manager as a CSV file, then import them into Proton Pass. An import should be treated as a transfer to verify, not as proof that every item type moved intact.

  1. Export the records from your existing password manager using its own export process.
  2. Import the CSV into Proton Pass using its import flow.
  3. Review important logins and check attachments, passkeys, and 2FA details individually. Verify that the records you rely on are present and usable.
  4. Keep the original vault available until you have checked the imported records and confirmed that you can sign in where needed.

Proton describes the general CSV workflow in its Pass product and import information. Transfer behavior can depend on the source manager and item type.

How to make the final choice

  • Pick Proton Pass Free if you need an individual password manager with unlimited logins and devices, and its ten aliases and three 2FA items cover your immediate needs.
  • Pick Proton Pass Plus if unlimited aliases or 2FA codes, secure sharing, file attachments, Emergency Access, or dark-web monitoring justify a paid plan.
  • Pick Proton Pass Family if you need Plus features for up to six users.
  • Pick Dashlane Premium if you want its phishing/scam protection and VPN bundle for one user.
  • Pick Dashlane Friends & Family if ten accounts matter more than VPN access for every member; only the plan manager receives VPN access.

Before paying, check platform support for the devices you actually use and compare the current annual checkout totals. That gives you a decision based on your household, workflow, and budget rather than a generic winner.
