Proton Mail is the better fit if your priority is reducing the provider’s access to stored message content and getting automatic end-to-end encryption when both people use Proton. Gmail is usually the better fit for Google integrations, familiar productivity tools, and organization-managed workflows. Neither service makes ordinary email between different providers automatically end-to-end encrypted, so the recipient and the setup matter as much as the brand.

The short answer: which service should you choose?

Choose Proton Mail when your threat model includes concern about a mail provider holding readable copies of your mailbox, and when the people you contact can use Proton-to-Proton encryption or a compatible protected-mail method. Choose Gmail when your day depends on Google services, shared organization tools, or a familiar inbox that works seamlessly with a broad productivity ecosystem.

There is no universal winner. Proton’s strongest privacy properties apply most clearly to messages exchanged between Proton accounts. Gmail’s default protection is encrypted transport (TLS), while stronger controls such as S/MIME or client-side encryption are associated with eligible work, school, or Google Workspace configurations rather than ordinary personal Gmail. Both services support two-factor authentication (2FA), including hardware security keys; that protects account sign-in, not the contents of every message.

How message encryption actually differs

Proton-to-Proton mail is end-to-end encrypted by default

When both sender and recipient use Proton Mail, Proton says messages are automatically protected with end-to-end encryption (E2EE). The message is encrypted before it leaves the sender’s device and is intended to remain unreadable to the service while stored and delivered. Proton also describes zero-access encryption for stored mailbox content, meaning the provider says it generally cannot decrypt the body of messages held in your mailbox.

That does not make every part of an email invisible. Proton says subject lines and sender and recipient addresses are encrypted in storage but are not end-to-end encrypted. Those fields can be needed for routing and mailbox functions. An attacker who compromises an account, device, browser session, or recipient can still access what that account or endpoint can read.

Messages to non-Proton addresses use a different model

An ordinary message sent between Proton and Gmail (or another outside provider) is not automatically E2EE across both providers. Proton describes TLS for the connection and zero-access encryption after the message reaches Proton’s servers. TLS helps prevent interception while the message travels between cooperating servers, but it does not prevent the receiving provider from processing or storing a readable copy.

Proton also notes that a message received from a non-Proton provider may remain accessible to the original sending provider, because that provider keeps its own copy. Moving the message into an encrypted Proton mailbox does not retroactively remove the sender’s copy or change what happened on the sender’s infrastructure.

Password-protected mail and PGP can extend protection

For an outside recipient, Proton offers password-protected messages. The recipient opens the message through a secure link and enters the password through a separately shared channel. Proton also supports PGP workflows for compatible contacts. These methods can provide end-to-end protection across providers, but only when the sender configures them correctly and the recipient can use the resulting workflow. They are not the same as ordinary, unconfigured email.

Gmail’s default is TLS in transit

Google says all Gmail messages use TLS automatically. TLS encrypts the connection while a message is moving between supported mail systems. It is important protection against network interception, but it is not the same as E2EE: the participating providers can generally access message content on their own systems when their policies and systems allow it.

Google documents S/MIME for work or school accounts and client-side encryption for eligible Google Workspace editions or configurations. Availability depends on the organization’s edition, administrator settings, certificates, and recipient compatibility. A personal Gmail account should not be assumed to have those controls simply because the Gmail interface supports secure connections.

Privacy: what each provider says it does with data

Proton’s provider-access model

Proton presents zero-access encryption and E2EE as ways to reduce its ability to read stored message bodies. Its apps are described as open source and independently audited. Those are useful transparency and assurance measures, but an audit is not a guarantee that every future change is risk-free, and encryption does not stop phishing, malicious attachments, compromised devices, or an attacker who obtains your credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The practical boundary is important: Proton can offer stronger protection for content it encrypts before or as it stores it, while metadata and messages originating outside Proton have different exposure. Subject lines and routing addresses are not E2EE, and another provider may retain its own readable copy.

Google’s stated Gmail data uses

Google’s Gmail privacy documentation says Gmail data supports service features such as smart inbox categories, Smart Compose, spam detection, performance, and security. Google also states: “We do not scan or read your Gmail messages to show you ads.” On the same explanation, Google says personal Gmail ads can be selected automatically using online activity while you are signed in. That is narrower than saying Gmail content is used to target ads, and the distinction matters.

Regardless of advertising, Gmail’s service features require processing that differs from Proton’s zero-access positioning. If your main concern is minimizing the provider’s technical ability to access stored message bodies, Proton’s encryption model is the closer match. If your concern is avoiding malicious mail, account takeover, or tracking across services, you still need account security, cautious link handling, and a review of your broader Google account settings.

Account security is separate from message privacy

Both services support 2FA and hardware security keys. Proton specifically documents YubiKey and other U2F/FIDO2-compatible keys. A hardware key can make phishing-based password theft much less useful because the attacker still lacks the physical authenticator and the origin-bound sign-in response.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2FA does not encrypt message contents. If you send an ordinary message to an outside provider, a security key will not change the transport or storage model of that message. It protects access to your account, drafts, contacts, and mailbox after sign-in.

Baseline hardening for either account

  • Turn on 2FA, preferably with a FIDO2 or U2F security key as the primary method and a carefully protected recovery method.
  • Use a unique, long password that is not reused on any other service.
  • Review active sessions, connected apps, forwarding rules, filters, and recovery addresses after enabling 2FA.
  • Keep your operating system, browser, and mobile mail app updated; encryption cannot compensate for malware on the endpoint.
  • Treat unexpected login alerts, invoices, document shares, and password-reset messages as potential phishing attempts. Open the provider’s site directly instead of following a suspicious link.

Everyday mail features and workflow

Proton’s comparison materials describe both services as offering mobile and web apps, folders, labels, filters, scheduled sending, undo-send, and automatic replies. Those similarities mean the daily mechanics of sorting and replying will feel familiar in either service. Proton also promotes dynamic hide-my-email aliases, which can give a different address to each signup and make it easier to disable an address that starts receiving unwanted mail.

Where Gmail is usually more convenient

  • Google ecosystem: Gmail is tightly connected to Google’s calendar, contacts, cloud files, meeting, and document workflows. The exact integrations available can depend on whether the account is personal or managed by an organization.
  • Organization workflows: Companies and schools already using Google Workspace may have centrally managed retention, sharing, identity, and encryption options.
  • Familiarity and compatibility: Gmail’s interface and account model are widely recognized, which can reduce training and support friction for a mixed group of users.

Where Proton is usually more convenient

  • Privacy-focused services: Proton bundles mail with its own calendar, drive, password manager, and related services. The exact bundle varies by plan, so check the current plan table before subscribing.
  • Alias-oriented signups: Dynamic hide-my-email aliases can keep your main address out of forms and newsletters.
  • Migration assistance: Proton’s Easy Switch can import messages and folders from Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook, and Proton says imports are encrypted as messages arrive.

These feature descriptions come from the providers’ own documentation and product comparisons, not an independent usability test. Your experience will depend on browser, mobile operating system, mailbox size, filters, and the organization’s policies.

Switching from Gmail to Proton Mail

Use Easy Switch for an initial import

Proton’s support documentation describes Easy Switch for importing messages and folders from Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook. The service says the import is encrypted as messages arrive. Before starting, estimate your mailbox size, identify labels that must become folders, and make a list of forwarding rules, filters, aliases, calendars, and third-party logins that use your old address.

  1. Create and secure the Proton account with a unique password and 2FA.
  2. Open Proton’s Easy Switch import tool and choose Gmail as the source.
  3. Authorize the requested Gmail access, review the folders and message categories selected, and start the import.
  4. Leave the source account available until the import reports completion; large mailboxes can take time.
  5. Check recent mail, sent mail, attachments, dates, and folder placement. Send test messages to both Proton and Gmail contacts.
  6. Update critical services one at a time, then decide whether to forward new Gmail mail or keep Gmail active for a transition period.

Importing does not move messages that other people or providers still retain, and it does not transfer every account dependency. Contacts, calendars, filters, forwarding rules, and app passwords may require separate recreation.

Desktop clients require Proton Mail Bridge

Proton says people who prefer a third-party desktop mail client need Proton Mail Bridge, which is available to paid-plan users. A browser or official mobile app does not require Bridge. If your workflow depends on Outlook, Thunderbird, or another desktop client, verify that your chosen Proton plan includes Bridge and that your operating system is supported before cancelling Gmail.

Sending protected mail to someone on the other service

For routine correspondence between Proton and Gmail, assume TLS in transit rather than E2EE across both providers. If the message contains sensitive material, choose a method that both parties can operate:

  • Use Proton password-protected mail: Set a strong one-time password and share it through a separate channel, such as a phone call or an already trusted messaging conversation. Do not put the password in the same email thread.
  • Use PGP: Exchange and verify public keys, confirm the recipient’s software supports the workflow, and understand that subject lines and routing metadata may still be exposed.
  • Use managed S/MIME or client-side encryption: This is appropriate only when the organization has enabled an eligible Google Workspace or other managed setup and both sides have the necessary certificates or controls.

If the recipient cannot use one of these methods, ordinary email is not a suitable channel for highly confidential information. A secure file-sharing or messaging system with verified recipients may be more appropriate, but the choice depends on your organization’s policy and threat model.

Common misconceptions and failure modes

“Proton encrypts every email end to end.”

Not every message. Automatic E2EE applies to Proton-to-Proton mail. Cross-provider mail normally relies on TLS in transit and Proton’s at-rest protection, unless you deliberately use password-protected mail or compatible PGP.

“TLS means Google or Proton cannot read the message.”

TLS protects the connection between mail systems. It does not by itself prevent a provider that stores or processes the message from accessing content on its own infrastructure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“A hardware key encrypts my mailbox.”

A security key strengthens authentication. It does not alter how a message is encrypted between providers or remove copies held by the sender and recipient.

“An audit proves the service is perfectly secure.”

Independent audits and open-source code can improve transparency, but they are bounded assessments. Phishing, malware, vulnerable endpoints, misconfigured forwarding, account recovery abuse, and future software changes remain possible risks.

“The free storage numbers are directly comparable.”

Proton’s free allowance starts at 500 MB and can reach 1 GB through onboarding, while Gmail’s stated 15 GB is shared with other Google storage. The numbers describe different entitlements and should not be treated as equivalent email-only capacity.

Choose according to your threat model and workflow

Proton Mail is the stronger choice when:

  • You want the provider to have less technical access to stored message bodies.
  • Your important correspondents can use Proton-to-Proton E2EE, password-protected messages, or PGP.
  • You value aliases and a privacy-oriented bundle more than deep integration with Google services.
  • You accept that larger storage, Bridge, custom domains, or additional addresses may require a paid plan.

Gmail is the stronger choice when:

  • Your work depends on Google’s calendar, documents, cloud storage, contacts, or organization controls.
  • You need a familiar workflow for a group that already uses Gmail or Google Workspace.
  • Your organization can administer eligible S/MIME or client-side encryption and manage the required certificates and policies.
  • You prefer to keep a large shared Google storage pool and accept Gmail’s provider-side processing model.

Keep both during a transition when:

  • Your old Gmail address is tied to banking, government, employment, recovery, or other high-impact accounts.
  • You need time to test imports, filters, mobile notifications, desktop access, and contact behavior.
  • Only some correspondents can use protected Proton messages and you still need ordinary Gmail delivery for everyone else.

A practical decision checklist

  1. List the messages that genuinely need confidentiality and identify which recipients can use E2EE or a protected-message workflow.
  2. Check whether your work or school requires Google integrations, shared drives, calendar delegation, or administrator-managed identity.
  3. Compare the storage you actually use with Proton’s 1 GB maximum free onboarding allowance and Gmail’s shared 15 GB figure.
  4. Confirm whether you need custom domains, multiple addresses, aliases, or a desktop client using Bridge, then verify the current plan terms.
  5. Enable 2FA and a hardware security key on whichever account you keep, and secure recovery methods before importing mail.
  6. Run a small migration test, verify attachments and folders, and keep the old account accessible until critical services have been updated.

Bottom line

Proton Mail is the better privacy-oriented choice, especially for Proton-to-Proton conversations and users who want encrypted mailbox storage with less provider access to message bodies. Gmail is the better productivity-oriented choice for people embedded in Google’s ecosystem or supported by an organization with managed encryption options. For messages exchanged across the two services, neither default setup is end-to-end encrypted; use password-protected mail, PGP, or an eligible managed encryption system when the content warrants it.
