If your property app repeatedly serves photos in three display shapes, preserve each uploaded original and create three named crop derivatives during ingest. Tie each rendition to its purpose—such as listing card, gallery, or banner—not just a ratio. This makes delivery predictable while keeping the original available for future crops. Treat that as an implementation choice, not a rule set by an image platform: the right balance of storage, processing, and flexibility depends on your workload.
Should you store multiple aspect ratios for property photos?
Usually, if the same three display surfaces consume images consistently and fast, predictable delivery matters. Keep the original as the canonical asset, then generate a derivative for each actual surface. A listing card, gallery, and banner are useful semantic names, but they are examples—not a universal set of ratios. Choose dimensions and ratios from the layouts your application really uses.
Keep the original because crop requirements can change. A new page layout, a corrected focal point, or an improved crop policy can then produce fresh derivatives without relying on an already-cropped image. This is an engineering recommendation inferred from image transformation workflows, not a vendor-mandated architecture.
Generate crops at ingest or on demand?
Ingest-time derivatives favor consistency and predictable serving: each consumer requests a known rendition. On-demand transformation can make crop rules easier to change and may avoid creating outputs that are never requested. Neither approach is universally faster or cheaper; the cited platform documentation describes transformation capabilities, not workload-specific benchmarks.

| Decision factor | Ingest-time derivatives | On-demand transformations |
|---|---|---|
| Response-time predictability | Renditions are prepared before delivery, which can make serving behavior more predictable. | Transformation occurs as part of requesting an output; measure the effect in your application. |
| Storage versus compute | Stores additional image files in exchange for generating them ahead of use. | Can defer or avoid generating unused variants, but uses transformation capacity when outputs are requested. |
| Changing crop rules | Existing derivatives need regeneration when rules change. | Rules can be changed centrally, subject to cache and delivery behavior. |
| Consistency across consumers | Named renditions give consumers a shared, explicit output to use. | Consumers can request different transformations; consistency depends on shared rules. |
| Correcting a focal point | Update the focal metadata and regenerate affected derivatives. | Update the focal guidance used for future transformations; ensure cached outputs do not preserve stale crops. |
These are decision criteria, not measured outcomes. Before committing, measure your own request patterns, image-update frequency, storage capacity, transformation costs, and cache behavior. Server-side delivery at requested dimensions can also avoid sending a full-size file to a browser merely for client-side resizing; see Cloudinary’s resizing and cropping guide.
How do you crop property photos without cutting off the house?
First decide whether the output must fill every target pixel. Cloudinary documents fill as scaling an image to fill target dimensions without distortion and cropping when the requested ratio differs. Its default gravity is center, so a centered crop can remove a roofline, room feature, driveway, or surrounding context. Gravity controls which part remains in frame. See Cloudinary’s crop-mode documentation and gravity guidance.

| Crop policy | Fills target dimensions? | Content and focus considerations |
|---|---|---|
| Fill with center gravity | Yes, when using the documented fill behavior. | Crops edges if ratios differ; center is the documented default and may miss the important property feature. |
| Fill with directional, custom, or automatic focus | Yes, when using a fill crop. | Guidance can retain a more relevant area, but inspect the result rather than assuming automation chose the right composition. Cloudinary documents compass positions, face or object focus, automatic focus, and custom coordinates in its gravity guide and custom focus-area guide. |
| Padding | Not by cropping away source edges to fill the frame; the output can add space around the image. | Useful when retaining more of the original composition matters more than filling every pixel. Cloudinary documents fill_pad and auto_pad as padding approaches, with mode-specific constraints to check before implementation. |
Content-aware cropping can help preserve specified elements while reaching a target ratio. AWS describes smart cropping in its Dynamic Image Transformation solution for Amazon CloudFront. Results still depend on the crop mode and focus guidance. Cloudinary notes that different crop modes can frame the same detected object differently; see its object-aware cropping documentation. Review high-value hero images and provide a human override when an incorrect crop would materially misrepresent the property.

What should each derivative record contain?
Store enough information to identify the rendition and reproduce it from the original. One practical design has an asset record for the uploaded original and a derivative record for each named output. This is a suggested application schema, not one prescribed by the cited services.

- Crop policy: crop mode, focal coordinates or detected focal metadata, and any padding behavior.
- Reproducibility: transformation-rule version, so changed layouts or crop logic can trigger regeneration.
Keep the original unchanged. When a focal point or layout changes, use the stored metadata and rule version to identify which outputs need to be regenerated. If you use on-demand transformations instead, apply equivalent versioning to the transformation rules and account for cached outputs when the focal guidance changes.

How should you choose the three ratios?
There is no universal trio established for property photos. Inspect the actual consuming surfaces and their image slots, then choose target dimensions that match those requirements. A banner may be wide while a card may be closer to square, but the application’s layout—not a generic property-photo standard—should determine the values.
- Inventory the display surfaces that use property images.
- Record each surface’s target dimensions, responsive behavior, and whether it requires edge-to-edge fill.
- Assign a stable semantic rendition name to each recurring use.
- Test representative images, including properties with important features near the frame edges.
- Choose ingest-time generation, on-demand transformation, or a mix based on measured traffic, update patterns, and operational constraints.
