Proof-of-Antiquity is not established in the available protocol documentation as a named blockchain consensus mechanism. The evidence also does not show that hardware diversity, by itself, beats wealth concentration. Ethereum offers a more grounded comparison: proof-of-work relies on computation, equipment and energy, while proof-of-stake ties consensus influence to staked ETH. Each design can face concentration pressures, but through different channels.
Is Proof-of-Antiquity a real consensus mechanism?
The name “Proof-of-Antiquity” is unverified: no attributable project, paper or protocol specification in the available material establishes it as a standalone consensus mechanism. It should not be treated as a defined alternative to proof-of-stake (PoS) without a source that specifies how it works.

Similar-sounding terms do exist, but they are not interchangeable. A 2024 paper discusses Proof of Activity and Proof of Importance, as well as its own Proof of Stake and Activity approach. Its discussion of Proof of Importance concerns using network activity signals alongside capital and notes a challenge in calculating trust scores. None of that establishes a mechanism called Proof-of-Antiquity.

Consensus is more than a test of one resource. Ethereum’s documentation describes a system of protocols, incentives, chain selection and social coordination. In Ethereum PoS, validators propose or attest to blocks, and fork choice weights validator votes according to staked ETH. Rewards and penalties apply to locked capital.

EIP-3675 records the Ethereum Mainnet upgrade that replaced proof-of-work (PoW) with PoS. The proposal, authored by Mikhail Kalinin, Danny Ryan and Vitalik Buterin, was created on July 22, 2021, and is marked final.
PoW versus Ethereum PoS: what is being concentrated?
| Dimension | Proof-of-work | Ethereum proof-of-stake |
|---|---|---|
| Resource tied to participation | Computing power, mining equipment and operating energy. | Staked ETH; validator votes are weighted by stake. |
| Documented concentration pressure | Ethereum’s documentation points to mining-hardware economies of scale, which can create nonlinear wealth-to-reward dynamics. | Ethereum’s documentation identifies large liquid-staking providers as a centralization concern. |
| Hardware access | Mining depends on computational resources and equipment. | Ethereum’s design goal is to keep hardware requirements low; that does not distribute stake or voting weight evenly. |
| Energy comparison | Ethereum.org estimated Ethereum’s use shortly before its PoS transition at approximately 78 TWh per year. | Ethereum.org estimated the reduction after Ethereum’s transition at approximately 99.98%. |
The energy figures are Ethereum-specific historical transition estimates reported by ethereum.org on a page updated April 22, 2026. They are not current electricity measurements for every network and should not be generalized to all PoW or PoS systems.

Does hardware diversity beat wealth concentration?
Not on the evidence available. Low-cost hardware can lower the technical barrier to participating in a network, but it does not establish who owns the assets that determine consensus weight, how voting power is distributed, or whether operators are independent. Hardware access and stake ownership are separate dimensions.
Ethereum’s consensus specifications state a design goal: “Minimize hardware requirements such that a consumer laptop can participate.” Ethereum.org also says validators can run on a low-powered device such as a Raspberry Pi. These are evidence of an accessibility goal for Ethereum, not proof that every laptop can run a validator under every configuration or that participants have equal influence.
Rank #3
A meaningful comparison therefore needs to distinguish the resource required to participate from who controls block-selection or voting weight, the concentration of operators and pooled services, attack costs and penalties, and energy use. A claim that one design is more decentralized needs evidence across the relevant dimensions, not hardware diversity alone.
Do the rich get richer in proof-of-stake?
Ethereum’s documentation says staking rewards scale linearly with stake. That statement does not mean stake ownership is evenly distributed or remove concerns about concentration among large liquid-staking providers. The mechanism’s effect depends on its rules and on how stake and services are distributed in practice.
Rank #4
A 2022 paper titled Proof-of-Stake Is a Defective Mechanism argues that stake-based entry and influence can become plutocratic. That is the paper’s critique, not a settled consensus. Ethereum’s official account is more qualified: it identifies liquid-staking concentration as a risk while also pointing to economies of scale in PoW mining.

There is no universal answer in the cited material. Ethereum’s documented comparison describes different centralization pressures: PoS links consensus weight to stake and can concentrate services among large liquid-staking providers; PoW can concentrate mining through economies of scale in hardware. Which network is more centralized cannot be decided from the consensus label alone.

For a specific network, assess who controls consensus weight, how concentrated operators or service providers are, what resources participation requires, and how the protocol handles attacks and penalties. Keep those measures tied to the network and the date being discussed; a low hardware barrier answers only one part of the question.
