Prologue to Tau ends when the player-controlled Vessel delivers the material it gathered to Praghasa, the Sentient mothership intended to carry the Tenno toward Tau. It is deliberately a launch point, not the Tau expedition itself. The quest confirms how the crossing is being prepared while leaving what happens in Tau for later Warframe content.

What Prologue to Tau is really setting up
Digital Extremes added Prologue to Tau to the Warframe Codex on October 15, 2026. It is a permanent quest tied to the long-running Tau storyline, rather than a temporary chapter that disappears with an event. You can begin it after meeting its prerequisites and complete it at your own pace.
The title matters because Tau is not an unexplored destination in Warframe lore. It is the distant system the Orokin sent the Sentients to terraform. The Sentients eventually returned from Tau and began the Old War, the conflict that shaped the Tenno, the Orokin collapse and much of the present-day setting. A mission that prepares a route back to Tau therefore points directly at the source of the game’s central historical trauma.
#1 Best Overall
The prologue does not show the Tenno arriving in Tau, resolving the Sentient conflict or explaining every unanswered question about the system. Its job is narrower and more practical: establish the vehicle, gather what that vehicle needs and hand the gathered resource to the force meant to open the crossing.
How to unlock Prologue to Tau
You need to finish both The Hex and The Old Peace. Once those quests are complete, use the Orbiter’s Codex and open the Prologue Quest/Chapters entry. The quest is not dependent on keeping the limited Epoch Operation: Taubound active; it remains in the Codex after that operation ends.
- Complete The Hex.
- Complete The Old Peace.
- Return to your Orbiter and open the Codex.
- Select Prologue Quest/Chapters and choose Prologue to Tau.
If the entry is absent, check the two quest completions first. The documented unlock path does not list a separate resource purchase, rank requirement or event-token condition.

The quest route, step by step
1. The conversation in the Dark Refractory
The documented route begins in the Sanctum Anatomica’s Dark Refractory. The Operator and Drifter speak there, framing the mission as a shared step toward the Tau crossing rather than a routine star-chart assignment. Their conversation leads into a memory sequence.
2. The memory sequence
The memory section connects the immediate preparation to the characters’ past experiences. It is a narrative transition: the quest uses memory to place the Operator and Drifter in the right emotional and historical context before the practical work begins. The sequence is part of the prologue’s story route, not a separate Tau destination.
3. Preparing a Vessel at Kronia Relay
After the memory sequence, travel to Kronia Relay. There, the player prepares a Vessel. This is the first time the player-controlled Vessel is given a clear operational role in the Tau plan. The Vessel is not simply a lore reference or a passive object; the quest puts it to work as the agent that can gather and deliver the required material.
4. The Eris Dermacrust mission
The next selection is the Eris Dermacrust node. In that mission, defeating enemies provides the material needed for Praghasa. The event description identifies Moonflesh gathered on Eris as fuel for the crossing, so the combat objective has a direct story purpose: the fighting supplies the energy or material that allows the Tau plan to proceed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThis structure explains why the mission can feel like a conventional Warframe combat activity while still advancing the plot. The enemies are not merely an abstract kill counter. Their drops represent the resource the Vessel is collecting for the mothership.
What the Vessel is doing
The Vessel’s role is preparation and delivery. It is sent into the Eris operation, gathers the material produced by the defeated enemies and then carries that material back to Praghasa. The quest therefore gives the Vessel a logistical function in the Tau project: it is the player-controlled means of collecting what the mothership needs.
That role also clarifies the relationship between the Vessel and the larger expedition. The Vessel is not presented as the ship that crosses the system by itself. Praghasa is the intended mothership and route-enabler; the Vessel performs the ground-level work required to make Praghasa’s crossing possible.
The distinction is important for reading the ending. When the Vessel finishes its task, the prologue has completed its immediate objective, but the Tenno have not completed their journey. The Vessel’s success is a prerequisite being fulfilled, not a destination being reached.

Praghasa is presented in this setup as the Sentient mothership intended to take the Tenno toward Tau. The crossing requires extraordinary energy, which is why the story sends the player to Eris to collect Moonflesh and related material. Praghasa is consequently both a character in the plan and a piece of infrastructure: without it, the route to Tau cannot be opened in the way this prologue describes.
The mothership also connects the new quest to the Sentients’ historical identity. Tau was the place where the Sentients were sent to terraform, and their return triggered the Old War. Praghasa’s role reverses that historical direction: instead of the Sentients coming from Tau to the Origin System, the Tenno are preparing to travel toward Tau.
The quest does not establish every capability Praghasa has, nor does it show the full mechanics of the crossing. What it establishes is sufficient for the prologue’s purpose: Praghasa is the intended vehicle or enabler, and the material collected on Eris is meant to provide the extraordinary energy needed to use it.

The ending explained
After the Vessel sequence, the Vessel offers what it gathered to Praghasa. The handoff is the final story beat, and the quest ends immediately afterward. There is no Tau expedition in this prologue and no final confrontation that resolves the wider storyline.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →In practical terms, the ending confirms three things:
- The Vessel can carry out the preparation work required by the Tau plan.
- The Eris material has a purpose beyond the individual mission: it is intended to fuel or otherwise support Praghasa.
- Praghasa is ready to receive the gathered resource, but the actual crossing and expedition remain future story material.
That unresolved ending is intentional. A prologue promises a beginning, and this one closes at the moment the launch preparations become viable. Treating the handoff as the end of the Tau story would overstate what the quest shows. It is the end of the setup chapter.
What the ending means for the larger lore
A return to the source of the Old War
The Tau plan carries unusual weight because Tau is where the Sentient project began before the Sentients returned to fight the Orokin. The Tenno’s relationship with the Old War is already personal and traumatic; a journey to Tau would bring them to the system associated with the conflict’s origin. The prologue deliberately invokes that history without repeating the entire Old War narrative.
The Tenno are moving from defense to pursuit
Much of Warframe’s earlier history concerns surviving the consequences of the Sentients’ return. Preparing Praghasa changes the direction of travel. The Tenno are no longer waiting for Tau’s influence to reach them; they are organizing a deliberate expedition toward it. The ending marks that strategic shift, even though it does not reveal the expedition’s objective beyond reaching Tau.

The Vessel has a concrete place in the plan
Before this quest, the Vessel could be understood primarily through its existence and mystery. The prologue gives it an observable task. It gathers a resource, transports it and delivers it to the mothership. That practical role may not answer every question about the Vessel’s nature, but it does explain why the player is involved in the preparation phase.

The two pieces of content are connected by the Tau setup but should not be treated as the same quest. Their availability, purpose and rewards are different.
| Aspect | Prologue to Tau | Epoch Operation: Taubound |
|---|---|---|
| Availability | Permanent Codex content; it remains after the operation ends. | Limited operation scheduled to end on November 17, 2026. |
| Type of content | Story quest and Tau narrative setup. | Resource-gathering operation with event activities. |
| Access | Complete The Hex and The Old Peace, then select it in the Orbiter Codex. | Access follows the operation’s event availability rather than the prologue’s Codex prerequisite route. |
| Core activity | Follow the Vessel through the memory, preparation and Eris Dermacrust sequence. | Gather resources connected to the event, including Moonflesh on Eris for the Tau crossing. |
| Story payoff | The Vessel delivers its gathered material to Praghasa and establishes the next major journey. | Provides event rewards and daily dialogue separate from the quest. |
Digital Extremes describes Prologue to Tau as a permanent addition to the Warframe Codex that can be completed at your leisure. That wording is the clearest reason not to rush the quest merely because Taubound has a closing date. The operation’s end date affects the limited event, not the prologue’s continued presence in the Codex.
Dialogue and rewards from Taubound are not part of the prologue. Conversely, completing the prologue does not turn the operation into permanent content or reproduce its daily activities. If you are trying to follow the story, play the quest; if you are trying to complete the event’s activities, treat Taubound as a separate, time-limited track.
Common questions about the ending
Does the quest take the player to Tau?
No. It prepares the crossing and ends when the Vessel delivers material to Praghasa. The actual expedition to Tau is left for later content.
Is Praghasa the Vessel?
No. The quest presents them as different parts of the plan. The Vessel gathers and delivers material; Praghasa is the Sentient mothership intended to enable the journey.
Why does the player fight enemies on Eris?
The Eris Dermacrust mission supplies the material required by Praghasa. The event description identifies Moonflesh collected on Eris as fuel for the crossing, giving the combat objective its story context.
Is Prologue to Tau removed when Taubound ends?
No. The prologue is permanent Codex content. Taubound is the limited operation with the November 17, 2026 end date.
Can the prologue be started before The Hex and The Old Peace?
The documented unlock requirements are completion of both quests. The Codex entry is expected to become available after those prerequisites are finished.
How to read the final scene
The final handoff is best understood as a checkpoint. The Tenno have supplied Praghasa with what it needs for the next stage, but the story has not shown the ship departing, reaching Tau or revealing what awaits there. The scene closes the preparation loop introduced at the Dark Refractory and leaves the destination deliberately unresolved.
That approach lets the prologue do two jobs at once. For players following the lore, it makes the Vessel’s purpose and Praghasa’s role concrete. For the wider narrative, it creates a clear point from which a future Tau chapter can begin without pretending that the expedition has already happened.
