For a first playthrough, play the main Professor Layton games in release order: Curious Village, Pandora’s Box (called The Diabolical Box in North America), Lost Future (called The Unwound Future in North America), Spectre’s Call (called The Last Specter in North America), Miracle Mask, Azran Legacy, and then LAYTON’S MYSTERY JOURNEY: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy. The first six form Layton’s central adventures; Katrielle is a later spin-off with a different lead detective.
You can still access the series through Nintendo DS and 3DS cartridges, the official HD mobile edition of Curious Village on iOS and Android, and Katrielle Deluxe on Nintendo Switch. Two newer projects are scheduled beyond the currently released games: Professor Layton and the New World of Steam on December 10, 2026, and a Curious Village remake in 2027.

The best order for a first playthrough
Release order is the safest route because it follows how the characters, puzzle systems and larger mysteries were introduced to players. It also keeps the original trilogy together before moving into the prequel-era adventures and then the Katrielle-led spin-off.

What each main game contributes
1. Curious Village
Curious Village is Professor Layton’s debut adventure and the natural entry point for the series’ investigation-and-puzzle format. LEVEL5 describes the official mobile edition as bringing together more than 100 brain teasers, including slide puzzles, matchstick puzzles and trick questions. The HD release is the most straightforward modern option if you do not own compatible Nintendo DS hardware: it is officially listed for iOS and Android.
If you choose the original version, look for a Nintendo DS cartridge. Condition, region and seller availability vary, so confirm that the listing is for the correct game and that the cartridge works with the DS-family hardware you intend to use.
2. Pandora’s Box (The Diabolical Box)
This is the second entry in the original trilogy. Searchers in North America may find it under Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box; the alternate name is not a different game. Its original release platform was Nintendo DS, and the practical route today is a working cartridge obtained through the used market.

3. Lost Future (The Unwound Future)
The third original-trilogy game is titled The Unwound Future in North America and The Lost Future in other naming conventions. Keep both names in mind when searching listings or catalogues. It is a Nintendo DS title and completes the first major Layton-and-Luke arc before the series moves to its prequel grouping.

4. Spectre’s Call (The Last Specter)
Spectre’s Call, known in North America as The Last Specter, is the first game in the prequel trilogy even though it was released after the original trilogy. That release position is why it belongs fourth in a first-playthrough order. It was originally a Nintendo DS game; current access depends on finding a functioning physical copy and compatible hardware.
5. Miracle Mask
Miracle Mask begins the Nintendo 3DS portion of the recommended sequence. It remains part of the prequel trilogy, so playing it after Spectre’s Call preserves the intended progression from the DS-era prequels to the 3DS entries. Nintendo’s listing confirms the original 3DS platform. Whether a digital listing appears today depends on your region and Nintendo account rules, so check the local store and used physical listings separately.
6. Azran Legacy
Azran Legacy is the final game in the prequel trilogy and the sixth release-order stop. It is also a Nintendo 3DS title. Complete it before moving to Katrielle if you want the full Layton-and-Luke sequence in release order.
7. LAYTON’S MYSTERY JOURNEY: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy
Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy changes the protagonist focus to Katrielle Layton. It is not another numbered chapter of the original Layton-and-Luke run; treat it as a spin-off after the six core games. The original version is on Nintendo 3DS, while the Deluxe Edition is available on Nintendo Switch.

Do you need chronological story order?
No. You do not need to rearrange the first playthrough. Release order is recommended because the franchise’s official groupings place the first three games in the original trilogy, followed by the three-game prequel trilogy. The prequel label describes narrative position, not release position.
If you have already completed the series and want a story-focused replay, you can use the grouping as a guide: play Spectre’s Call, Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy together as the prequel set, then revisit the original trilogy. That is an optional replay experiment, not a requirement for understanding the games.
Where to play the released games now
Official mobile option
The official HD edition of Curious Village is listed for iOS and Android. It is the only title in the recommended list for which the supplied platform information identifies a current official mobile release. Check your device’s local app-store listing for compatibility and purchase availability.

Nintendo DS cartridges
The original trilogy and Spectre’s Call were Nintendo DS releases. Nintendo’s series hub identifies those platforms, while present-day access generally means a used cartridge and legacy hardware. Before buying, verify the exact regional title: Pandora’s Box may be labelled The Diabolical Box, and Lost Future may be labelled The Unwound Future.

The strongest physical starting point is Curious Village on Nintendo DS. Cartridge condition, region and seller availability vary, so ask for clear photos, confirm the label and check the seller’s return policy where one is offered. Avoid assuming that a listing for an HD mobile edition is the same product as the DS cartridge.
Nintendo 3DS games
Miracle Mask, Azran Legacy and the 3DS edition of Katrielle were released for Nintendo 3DS. Nintendo’s pages confirm those original platforms, but current digital-store availability can vary by region. Check your local Nintendo account and store rules, then compare that result with used physical listings. A 3DS cartridge listing is not interchangeable with a DS cartridge listing, so identify the platform before purchasing.
Nintendo Switch
The available Switch entry is LAYTON’S MYSTERY JOURNEY: Katrielle and the Millionaires’ Conspiracy Deluxe Edition. It is a convenient way to play the Katrielle spin-off without sourcing the original 3DS version, but it does not replace the six earlier Layton-and-Luke games.

Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney is an optional Nintendo 3DS crossover. Play it after the original trilogy or after the prequel trilogy. It is not required for the core Layton arc, so place it where your interest in the crossover is highest rather than interrupting the seven-game route.

Upcoming Professor Layton releases
Professor Layton and the New World of Steam
LEVEL5 states that New World of Steam begins one year after the events of The Unwound Future. Its supported platforms are Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Steam, with a scheduled release date of December 10, 2026. Because that date is later than the current released catalogue, it should be treated as an upcoming continuation rather than inserted into the completed seven-game order.
Professor Layton and the Curious Village Remake
LEVEL5 lists a worldwide 2027 release for the Curious Village remake on Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 5 and Steam. The remake is described as adding 3D character presentation, more immersive exploration and high-resolution widescreen animation. Until it releases, the original DS game and official HD mobile edition remain the available ways to start the story.
A practical buying and play plan
- Choose your starting format. Use the official HD mobile edition if you want the least hardware friction, or buy a DS copy of Curious Village if you prefer the original platform.
- Finish the original trilogy. Continue with Pandora’s Box and Lost Future, checking both regional title names when searching.
- Move to the prequel trilogy. Play Spectre’s Call, Miracle Mask and Azran Legacy in that order.
- Decide whether you want the spin-off. Add Katrielle on 3DS or Switch after the six core games.
- Add the crossover separately. Put Professor Layton vs. Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney after either trilogy if you want the optional crossover experience.
- Watch release timing. Consider New World of Steam after its December 10, 2026 launch and the remake after its scheduled 2027 release.
