For an Amazon.com U.S. listing main image, the cited Amazon guidance calls for a pure white background (RGB 255, 255, 255), but that is not a universal target for every category or ad placement. Keep a human review step for uncertain cutouts and hold images that have not been checked against the applicable requirements.
What a background-removal preset should control
A preset is a repeatable starting point, not proof that an image complies with a marketplace’s rules or faithfully represents the product. Organize presets around where the image will appear and what job it serves; do not rely on a single setting for every product photo.

- Destination: Name the marketplace or channel the image is intended for.
- Image role: Distinguish a listing main image from secondary listing images and ad creative.
- Category: Add a category-specific preset or review requirement when the destination’s rules vary by product type.
- Background and export: Record the target background, file format, dimensions, and other export settings required for that destination. Confirm technical requirements against the current destination guidance.
- Review triggers: Document which results must be checked or corrected manually before upload.
Keep the rule source and its last review date with each preset. Retain original captures and editable masks, and use output filenames that identify the destination and preset version. These are practical governance measures, not steps Amazon prescribes verbatim.

How to set the Amazon.com U.S. listing-image default
Amazon’s U.S. product-image guidance specifies a pure white background—RGB 255, 255, 255—for product main images. It also directs sellers to category-specific instructions and notes that only a limited number of product types may use a lifestyle main image, subject to restrictions including no text or extra logos. For a main-image preset intended for Amazon.com in the U.S., set RGB 255, 255, 255 as the default background target, then verify the complete image—not just the background color. The product should remain fully visible, and the edit should not change its color or imply objects or components that are not included.
When to stop automation and review the image
Use these as internal quality-control triggers, not as a quoted Amazon checklist. Route the image to a person when any of the following applies:

- The cutout removes, invents, or materially changes a product detail, color, shape, or included component.
- Edges around fine details, transparent or reflective materials, fur, mesh, or shadows look uncertain or visibly artificial.

- The destination, image role, or category is unknown, or category guidance may allow a different presentation.
- The image is for an advertising placement rather than a listing image; check the ad placement’s own specifications.
Amazon says images that fail technical requirements cannot be uploaded, and images that fail product-image requirements may be removed. It also warns that a listing without a compliant main image may be temporarily removed from search until one is supplied. Keep listing presets separate from ad presets
Amazon Ads publishes separate specifications for ecommerce display creatives, with rules that depend on the placement and creative context. Identify the intended placement first, then create or select the matching ad preset; a listing main-image setting should not be carried over by default. What background-removal software can—and cannot—establish
Adobe describes a Photoshop Remove Background feature for isolating products and making white or transparent backgrounds. That describes a software capability; it does not establish that every material, edge, or product shape will be handled accurately. Review the output against the original capture and use editable masking or selection tools when a cutout needs correction. - Identify the destination and use. Record the marketplace, country, image role, and—if relevant—the ad placement before processing.
- Check the applicable rule. Consult current general and category-specific requirements. For an Amazon.com U.S. main image, use the cited white-background target unless the applicable category guidance specifies an allowed exception.
- Choose a named, versioned preset. Include destination and image role in its name, and record background, export settings, rule source, and last review date.
- Process from the original capture. Preserve the original and any editable mask so the result can be revisited without treating a flattened output as the only source.
- Inspect the full result. Check the product’s visibility, color, shape, included components, edge quality, and background. Send uncertain outputs for manual cleanup.
- Hold before upload when requirements are unresolved. Do not publish until the image has passed the applicable review and any required correction.
- Revisit the preset when guidance or the workflow changes. Keep the rule source and review date available so teams can identify which default produced an output.
A white backdrop or tabletop sweep can help capture a clean original image, but it is a capture aid—not a background-removal method or a guarantee of compliance. Amazon’s photo guide recommends photographing products against a white background. Amazon’s product-photography guide
