Private Search Engines That Don’t Personalize Results From Your Browsing

DuckDuckGo, Startpage and Brave Search all say they avoid building a personal search-history profile that changes your results. That does not mean every person sees identical links, or that a search is anonymous from every party. Query wording, language, approximate location, index coverage, ranking systems and optional settings can still change what appears. The practical distinction is whether your previous searches and browsing are tied to you and fed back into later rankings.

What “not personalized” means

A personalized search engine uses signals associated with an individual—such as previous queries, clicks, account activity or browsing history—to alter later results. A non-personalized service says it does not connect that history to your identity and use it to rank your next search.

  • Identical results: Two people can receive different results because they use different words, languages, country settings, regional indexes, device settings or ranking experiments.
  • Complete anonymity: Internet routing still exposes an IP address to network providers and, after a click, the destination website can collect its own data.
  • Neutrality: A service can avoid personal-history profiling while still applying its own ranking rules, editorial policies, spam controls and index limitations.

The services below describe their own handling of history. Those are provider statements, not a guarantee that every current query behaves identically or that every third party in the search journey is privacy-safe.

Which private search engines say they do not use your browsing history?

Service History and query handling Result source and controls Advertising or post-click detail
DuckDuckGo Its policy says it does not save or share search or browsing history and cannot create an individual history. It may retain anonymous queries in disconnected form to analyze trends and improve its index. Results and local search can vary by query and region. Local search uses a random nearby location that DuckDuckGo says is not logged to disk. Search ads are based on the current results page rather than a personal profile. The policy says ordinary routing exposes IP addresses and visited sites have their own policies.
Startpage It says it submits searches anonymously and does not retain search history or personalize results from past searches. It acts as an intermediary to other providers. Its provider feed can differ from what that provider gives a direct user, so results are not necessarily identical. Ads are described as contextual to the search term. Anonymous View can proxy a visit to a result page.
Brave Search Its notice says it stores de-identified query text plus limited context such as platform, operating system, country, language and date. Queries are not grouped by user, device or IP address. It says it uses an independent index. Optional anonymous local results use the device’s broadcast IP without storing or sharing it. Google fallback mixing is an optional setting when results do not meet expectations. Privacy handling for an Ask Brave conversation differs from ordinary search: the conversation can be retained on its servers until it is automatically erased after 24 hours of inactivity.

DuckDuckGo: no individual search history, but normal web limits remain

DuckDuckGo’s privacy policy states: “We don’t save or share your search, chat, or browsing history when you search on DuckDuckGo, chat on Duck.ai, or use our apps and extensions.” The company says that means it cannot build an individual history to personalize later results. It also says anonymous search queries may be retained in a disconnected form for trend analysis and index improvement; that is different from attaching a record to your account or IP.

Its local-search design illustrates why non-personalized does not mean location-free. DuckDuckGo says it uses a random nearby location for local results and does not log that location to disk. A restaurant or service query can therefore change when local intent is involved even though your previous searches are not used.

DuckDuckGo says search advertising is selected from the current results page, not from a profile of the person. Its policy separately notes that Microsoft manages ad clicks under a commitment not to associate click information with an individual profile or retain or share it beyond accounting purposes. That statement concerns the described ad arrangement; it does not control what a destination website does after navigation.

Startpage: an anonymous intermediary to other providers

Startpage describes a different architecture. It says it removes personal data at an initial server layer, submits the query anonymously to results providers, receives their feed and returns the results. The provider therefore cannot determine the searcher’s identity or use that person’s past history to personalize the response. Startpage’s support material describes the outcome as a standard set of results with no additional personalization.

Because Startpage is an intermediary, its page is not guaranteed to match a direct search at the underlying provider. Startpage says the feed it receives can differ from what the provider returns to a user who searches directly. Differences can also come from language, country, timing, ranking updates and the query itself.

Startpage describes its result ads as contextual to the search term rather than based on a personal search profile. Its separate Anonymous View feature acts as a proxy when you open a result, reducing the direct connection between your browser and that destination. The destination still controls its own content and privacy practices.

Brave Search: de-identified records and optional local results

Brave Search says it keeps de-identified query data, including the query text and limited context such as device platform, operating system, country, language and date. Its notice states: “Search queries are not grouped based on the user, device or IP address the search query originated from.” In practical terms, Brave describes retaining operational data without constructing a sequence of searches tied back to you.

Brave says its index is independent, so coverage and ranking can differ from services that license or relay another provider’s results. It also offers optional Google fallback mixing when its results do not meet expectations. Turning on a fallback changes the result source; it does not by itself prove that your history is being used for personalization.

Local results are another explicit choice. Brave says anonymous local results can use the device’s broadcast IP to estimate locality without sharing or storing that IP, and that users can opt out. If you discuss or use Ask Brave rather than ordinary web search, read the separate handling carefully: Brave says a conversation may be processed on its servers and retained for the conversation, then automatically erased after 24 hours of inactivity.

How much can personalization change search results?

A 2017 study titled “Measuring Personalization of Web Search” compared results for 200 Google users and 100 Bing users. Under that study’s method, an average 11.7% of Google results and 15.8% of Bing results differed because of personalization. The share varied by query and by result rank. The researchers reported no noticeable personalization on DuckDuckGo in their test.

Those figures are historical, method-specific measurements, not a current universal score for any engine. Search systems, interfaces, indexes and privacy settings change. The useful lesson is that personal-history signals can produce measurable differences, while a single study cannot establish how every present-day query behaves.

Are private search engines really private after you click?

Privacy at the search box does not transfer automatically to the rest of the web. DuckDuckGo’s policy says ordinary internet routing still exposes IP addresses to providers, and every visited site has its own practices. Startpage’s Anonymous View is designed to add a proxy layer for a result visit, but it cannot rewrite the destination’s privacy policy.

A 2023 measurement study of search advertising systems tested Google, Bing, DuckDuckGo, Startpage and Qwant. Across the study’s sampled destination pages, 93% included a tracker or another privacy-harming resource. The paper also measured navigation-based tracking in 100% of the sampled DuckDuckGo, Google and Startpage ad clicks, 86% of Qwant clicks and 4% of Bing clicks. These are results from the researchers’ tested ad-click flows and sample, not timeless rates for ordinary searches or every destination.

Use the findings as a boundary: selecting a privacy-oriented engine can reduce personal-history profiling by the search provider, but it cannot guarantee that an advertiser, redirector, analytics script or destination site will not collect information after a click.

How to search without your history changing the results

  1. Choose an engine whose stated policy matches your goal. Use DuckDuckGo if you want a provider that says it does not save or share search and browsing history; Startpage if you prefer an anonymous intermediary to other providers; or Brave Search if you want an independent index with de-identified query handling.
  2. Check local and fallback settings. Local-result features use approximate location signals, and Brave’s optional fallback mixing changes where results come from. Disable those options when they are not useful, or leave them enabled when local intent is the point of the search.
  3. Do not sign into a personal account unnecessarily. An engine’s no-history policy does not prevent an account, browser extension or other service from adding its own activity records. Keep the search service separate from identity-linked tools when that separation matters.
  4. Search in a way that avoids accidental carry-over. A private browser window can keep the local browser from reusing its saved history and cookies, but it does not make you anonymous to the network, search provider or destination site. Clear saved autocomplete entries if another person uses the device.
  5. Inspect the destination before clicking. Prefer a direct organic result when practical, be cautious with ad redirects, and use a proxy-style feature such as Startpage’s Anonymous View when its limitations fit the site you need to visit.
  6. Recheck the policy when the feature changes. Privacy statements describe current handling, while indexes, local-result systems, ad partners and AI features can evolve independently.

Choosing among the three

Choose DuckDuckGo when

  • Your priority is a clear statement that search and browsing history are not saved or shared as an individual profile.
  • You want ads selected from the current results page rather than from a history-based profile.
  • You understand that local results use a random nearby location and that a clicked website has separate tracking practices.

Choose Startpage when

  • You want an intermediary that anonymously submits queries to other providers.
  • You prefer standard provider results without personalization based on your past searches.
  • You value a separate proxy-style Anonymous View option for opening result pages and accept that its feed may differ from a direct provider search.

Choose Brave Search when

  • You want an independently maintained index rather than an intermediary feed.
  • You accept de-identified query records containing limited context but not grouped by user, device or IP.
  • You need optional anonymous local results or the ability to mix in a fallback provider, and you are willing to review those settings.

What “private” still does not cover

  • Your network connection: IP addresses are part of normal internet routing.
  • Your browser and device: Local history, cookies, extensions and account sign-ins can preserve activity even when the search provider says it does not.
  • Destination websites: They set their own collection, advertising and analytics rules.
  • Search quality differences: Independent indexes, provider feeds, language, country, ranking updates and query wording can produce different results without personal profiling.
  • Separate AI features: Ask Brave’s stated retention period differs from ordinary Brave Search handling.

The right test is therefore specific: does the engine connect your past activity to your identity and use that connection to alter later results? DuckDuckGo, Startpage and Brave Search each say they avoid that form of personalization, while exposing different trade-offs in data retention, result sources, local features and post-click protection.
