Private Search Engines in 2026: How to Choose One That Tracks Less

For search privacy, DuckDuckGo, Brave Search, Startpage, and Kagi each describe a different approach—but none can guarantee privacy after you leave the results page. The practical choice depends on what you want to limit: identifiable search records, provider-linked queries, reliance on another search provider, or data collection tied to a free service. These are provider policy statements, not independent audits, and they do not establish which engine returns the best results.

What “doesn’t track” should mean

A search engine’s privacy claim is useful only when you know what data it covers. Check whether the provider keeps the words you search, whether it can connect them to your account, device, or IP address, and whether it retains de-identified query trends. Those are different practices: a provider might say it does not keep an identifiable search history while retaining anonymous queries to improve its service.

Also separate search activity from other features. Accounts, location-based results, AI or chat tools, fallback search, and ad measurement can involve different data handling. Finally, privacy at the search engine does not prevent a destination website from tracking you once you click through.

How the four search engines describe their privacy practices

Search engine Search data and linkage Index or result source Business model and feature caveats
DuckDuckGo DuckDuckGo says it does not save or share identifiable search history and does not store an IP address alongside searches. Its policy says it may retain anonymous queries disconnected from identifiers to improve its search index. The reviewed policy does not establish a comparable, current account of index independence or ranking quality. It describes search ads as contextual to the results page. Ad clicks are handled through Microsoft’s advertising system.
Brave Search Brave says it stores de-identified query text along with platform, operating system, country, language, and date, without linking those data to an individual, device, or IP address. Brave says its search index is independent. Optional Google fallback mixing, local results, ad measurement, and Ask Brave have their own relevant privacy disclosures.
Startpage Startpage says it removes IP addresses and other identifying metadata before sending an anonymized query to search and content providers, and says it does not log searches. Its policy allows it to record or block an IP when systems detect suspected automated abuse. It describes sending anonymized queries to search and content providers; the reviewed sources do not establish a comparable, current ranking-quality test. Review the provider’s current disclosures for any particular feature you use; search privacy claims do not describe what happens on the destination site.
Kagi Kagi says it does not use analytics or telemetry and does not track which result a user clicks. The reviewed policy does not establish a comparable, current account of index independence or ranking quality. Kagi is a paid service. Its policy explains that operating a paid service may require basic customer information, so account and payment privacy are separate from query privacy.

The statements in this comparison reflect the providers’ official privacy disclosures accessed October 8, 2026. They describe provider policies; they are not independent verification of how every system behaves.

DuckDuckGo: identifiable history versus anonymous queries

DuckDuckGo’s policy states: “We don’t save or share your search, chat, or browsing history when you search on DuckDuckGo, chat on Duck.ai, or use our apps and extensions.” This is DuckDuckGo’s statement about its own services, not a promise that ad systems, clicked websites, or other parties never receive data. The policy also distinguishes identifiable history from anonymous queries it may keep to improve its index.

Its search ads are described as contextual to the results page rather than based on a saved profile of search history. However, ad clicks are handled through Microsoft’s advertising system, which is a separate data flow from the search page itself.

Brave Search: an independent index with de-identified query records

Brave says it retains de-identified query text alongside technical and contextual fields such as platform, operating system, country, language, and date. It says those records are not linked to an individual, device, or IP address. That is not the same as saying no query data are retained.

Brave states: “We do not store any additional data associated with the search query that could link it with an individual user, their device, or IP address.” Brave also says its index is independent. If you enable optional Google fallback mixing, or use local results, ad measurement, or Ask Brave, consult the applicable feature disclosures rather than assuming the general search policy covers every detail.

Startpage: anonymizing queries sent to providers

Startpage says it strips IP addresses and other identifying metadata from a query before sending the anonymized query to search and content providers. Its policy states: “We don’t log your searches.” It also describes a narrow exception: when systems detect suspected automated abuse, Startpage may record or block an IP address.

Kagi: paid search and a separate account privacy question

Kagi says it has no analytics or telemetry and does not track which search result you choose to click. Its policy states: “Unlike most search engines, we do not track which search result you choose to click.” Kagi is paid, and its policy notes that basic customer information may be needed to operate the service. What happens when you click an ad

A 2023 peer-reviewed study by Salim Chouaki, Oana Goga, Hamed Haddadi, and Peter Snyder measured redirectors in sampled ad-click flows. It found redirectors on 100% of sampled DuckDuckGo ad clicks, 100% of sampled Startpage ad clicks, 100% of sampled Google ad clicks, 86% of sampled Qwant ad clicks, and 4% of sampled Bing ad clicks. The study also reported that ad systems passed unique IDs to advertisers in most observed ad clicks.

These figures describe the advertising systems and clicks the researchers measured in 2023. They do not establish what happens on every current click, nor do they show that every search on an engine shares the same behavior. They do illustrate why a search engine’s handling of your query and an ad network’s handling of a click should be considered separately.

Which search engine should you use?

Choose according to the privacy distinction that matters most to you, not an unsupported universal ranking. The reviewed sources do not provide a current, comparable test of result relevance, regional coverage, or completeness, so privacy policies alone cannot identify the most accurate engine.

  • If limiting identifiable search history is your priority: DuckDuckGo says it does not save or share identifiable search history or store an IP alongside searches. Keep its anonymous-query retention and Microsoft-handled ad clicks in view.
  • If you want an independent index: Brave says its index is independent. Its stated practice includes retaining de-identified query text with several contextual fields, and optional features may have separate caveats.
  • If you prefer queries to be anonymized before being sent to providers: Startpage says it removes identifying metadata before forwarding queries. Its policy also describes an exception for suspected automated abuse.
  • If you prefer a paid service and want a policy that says it does not track result clicks: Kagi makes that claim, while acknowledging basic customer information may be needed to operate its paid service. Query handling and payment/account handling are distinct considerations.

Before choosing, check each provider’s current policy and the settings or disclosures for any optional feature you plan to use. Consider what information a destination site may collect after you navigate away from search results.
