Private DNS and Android’s ad privacy settings solve different problems. Private DNS protects DNS questions and answers between your phone and a resolver; it is not, by itself, an ad blocker, VPN, or universal tracker blocker. Ad privacy settings control Android’s supported advertising signals—ad topics, app-suggested ads, and ad measurement. Advertising ID is a separate, resettable or deletable identifier. You can use these controls together, but none promises an ad-free or completely untracked phone.
The difference at a glance
A DNS lookup turns a hostname such as an app’s service address into an IP address. Private DNS changes how those DNS questions and answers travel to the resolver. Android’s ad privacy controls change whether particular advertising data and identifiers are generated, shared, or available to apps. Because they operate at different layers, changing one does not substitute for changing the other.

| Control | What it changes | What it does not promise |
|---|---|---|
| Private DNS | Android can send DNS questions and answers through DNS-over-TLS to a selected resolver. You choose Off, Automatic, or a named provider hostname. | It does not filter every advertisement, stop all tracking, encrypt ordinary app traffic, or function as a VPN. Google’s wording is explicit: it “helps secure only DNS questions and answers.” |
| Ad topics | Android can derive interest topics from apps used on the device and share topics with participating apps for ad personalization. You can remove topics or turn the feature off. | Removing a topic does not guarantee that ads about that subject disappear. |
| App-suggested ads | Apps may recommend and store suggestions in Android. You can block a particular app from suggesting ads; Android then deletes that app’s associated suggestion data. | You may still see ads related to that app. |
| Ad measurement | Participating apps may share limited information used to measure ad performance, such as the time of day an ad was shown. You can turn this feature off. | It is not a general-purpose ad or network-traffic blocker. |
| Advertising ID | Google Play services supplies a unique identifier that users can reset or delete. After deletion, access attempts receive a string of zeros. | Apps can use their own settings and identifiers, so deleting this ID alone does not establish that all personalization or tracking stops. |
What Private DNS actually does
It protects the DNS exchange
When an app needs to contact a hostname, the device normally asks a DNS resolver for the corresponding address. Android’s Private DNS setting supports DNS-over-TLS, which encrypts the DNS question and the resolver’s answer while they are in transit. Someone observing that exchange on a network should not be able to read those DNS messages as plain text in the same way as an unencrypted DNS exchange.

The web page, video, image, API request, or other data that follows the lookup is a separate connection. The Android Help description therefore draws a strict boundary: “Private DNS helps secure only DNS questions and answers. It can’t protect anything else.”

Android’s three choices
- Off: Android does not use its Private DNS mode.
- Automatic: Android uses the system’s automatic Private DNS behavior when available.
- Private DNS provider hostname: You enter a resolver hostname supplied by a provider. The setting then attempts to use that named resolver over the supported secure DNS transport.
Exact labels and menu placement vary by manufacturer and Android release. Google’s general route is Settings > Network & Internet > Private DNS. If that route is different on your phone, search Settings for Private DNS.
Why choosing a provider does not automatically mean “ad blocking”
Private DNS is a transport and resolver-selection setting, not an advertising policy. The Android setting itself does not inspect every page or app request and remove ad elements. A particular DNS service might offer domain filtering as an additional policy, but that would be a characteristic of that service, not a promise made by Android’s Private DNS switch. The Android documentation does not establish any specific consumer resolver or its filtering list, so do not treat a provider hostname as a guaranteed ad-blocking solution.
App and browser exceptions matter
Android’s developer guidance says apps targeting Android 9 (API level 28) should honor the platform’s Private DNS behavior. However, apps can implement their own resolver logic, and browsers or other software may use app-specific networking. It has not been established that every app, browser, or device sends every DNS request through the system resolver. Private DNS can therefore improve protection for system-resolved lookups without giving you a universal inventory of all network connections.

What Android’s ad privacy settings control
Google’s Android ad privacy page documents three named mechanisms. They are controls over supported advertising signals, not a promise that advertising disappears from apps.
Ad topics
Android can infer topics of interest from the apps you use. Participating apps may receive those topics to personalize advertising. Google states that Android shares up to three topics at a time with an app. The system also states that it deletes your ad topics after four weeks; those are operational settings figures, not survey statistics.
You can review the topics Android has associated with you, remove individual topics, or turn the feature off. Removing a topic changes the topic data available through this mechanism. It does not prevent an app from showing an ad about the same subject using another signal, its own data, contextual information, or a direct relationship with an advertiser.
App-suggested ads
Apps can recommend ad-related suggestions and store those suggestions in Android. In the ad privacy controls, you can block a particular app from suggesting ads. Android says that blocking the app deletes its associated suggestion data. The same documentation cautions that ads related to that app may still appear, so this control should be understood as removing that app’s suggestions rather than suppressing every mention of the app.

Ad measurement
Ad measurement allows participating apps to share limited data used to assess advertising performance. Google gives the time of day an ad was shown as an example of the type of information involved. Turning the feature off prevents this Android-supported measurement mechanism from operating for you; it is not described as a filter for ads, DNS queries, or general network traffic.
Where to find the controls
Google’s documented route is Settings > Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy. Manufacturers can rename, move, or group settings differently, and availability can depend on the Android build and Google services installed. If you do not see the exact labels, use Settings search for Ads privacy, Ad topics, or Advertising ID.
Advertising ID is a separate control surface
Google Play Console Help defines the advertising ID as “a unique, user-resettable, and user-deletable ID for advertising, provided by Google Play services.” Resetting creates a new value for future use. Deleting removes the usable value: Google says that attempts to access the ID after deletion receive a string of zeros.
This identifier is distinct from ad topics, app-suggested ads, ad measurement, and Private DNS. An app may have its own account identifier, device fingerprinting approach, analytics settings, or advertising preferences. Consequently, deleting or resetting Advertising ID is a meaningful change to one signal, but it is not evidence that all ad personalization or tracking has stopped.

Private DNS and ad privacy compared by reader concern
| If your concern is… | The relevant control | Why | Remaining limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Who can read DNS lookups on the network | Private DNS | It protects DNS questions and answers in transit to the resolver. | It does not protect the subsequent app or web connection, and some software may resolve names independently. |
| Interest categories inferred from app use | Ad topics | You can inspect, remove, or disable Android’s topic-sharing mechanism. | Other ad signals can still produce related advertising. |
| Suggestions generated by a particular app | App-suggested ads | You can block that app’s suggestions and delete its associated suggestion data. | Ads related to the app may still be shown. |
| Sharing limited information to assess ad performance | Ad measurement | You can turn off Android’s documented measurement feature. | It does not block ads or unrelated analytics systems. |
| A resettable identifier supplied by Google Play services | Advertising ID | You can reset it or delete it; deleted-ID access returns zeros. | Apps may use their own identifiers or settings. |
How one app request moves through these layers
Consider an app opening a service hostname. First, it needs a DNS answer. If the app uses Android’s supported system path and Private DNS is active, that question and answer use the selected secure DNS mode. Next, the app opens its separate connection to the returned address and exchanges the requested content. Private DNS does not rewrite that later exchange.
Advertising decisions can occur independently. A participating app may receive Android-supported ad topics, use an app suggestion stored in Android, or share limited measurement information. Advertising ID may be another available signal. Turning off one of those mechanisms does not change the DNS lookup, and enabling Private DNS does not revoke an advertising signal. Thinking in this sequence helps explain why the controls can be combined without overlapping.
Choosing settings by your goal
- You want to reduce exposure of DNS lookups on a network: review Private DNS and select Automatic or a correctly supplied provider hostname. Its guaranteed scope is the DNS exchange.
- You do not want Android’s inferred interests used through its topic mechanism: open Ad topics, inspect or remove entries, or turn the feature off. Similar advertisements can still come from other signals.
- You want to stop one app from contributing suggestions: use App-suggested ads to block that app and remove its associated suggestions. This does not erase every ad related to the app.
- You do not want Android’s documented ad-measurement mechanism: turn off Ad measurement. This is not a switch for ordinary app analytics or all network traffic.
- You want to change the Play services advertising identifier: reset it for a new value or delete it. Deletion produces zeros when an app attempts to read it, but apps may still have other identifiers.
These choices are independent. There is no required order, and using one does not make the others unnecessary.

How to change the settings
Set up or review Private DNS
- Open Settings.
- Go to Network & Internet > Private DNS, or search Settings for Private DNS.
- Choose Off, Automatic, or Private DNS provider hostname.
- If you choose a provider hostname, enter the hostname exactly as supplied by that provider and save it.
- Test the apps and sites you need. If the named-hostname option causes connectivity or resolution problems, return to Automatic while you diagnose the hostname or network.
Do not interpret a successful connection as proof that all app traffic is covered. The setting’s guaranteed scope remains DNS questions and answers handled through the system’s supported path.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsReview Android’s ad privacy controls
- Open Settings.
- Go to Google > All services > Privacy & security > Ads > Ads privacy, or search Settings for Ads privacy.
- Open Ad topics to remove topics or turn the feature off.
- Open App-suggested ads to block suggestions from a listed app.
- Open Ad measurement to turn Android’s documented measurement mechanism off.
- Review the separate Advertising ID control if you want to reset or delete that identifier.
The visible switches and the list of participating apps can vary by phone, Android release, Google Play services state, and app support. A missing switch does not prove that an app has no advertising or tracking system; it may simply be outside these Android controls.
Troubleshooting after a change
If a named Private DNS hostname produces an error, check the spelling first. A hostname is not the same thing as a web address, and the field is intended for the resolver hostname supplied by its operator. Returning temporarily to Automatic is a practical way to separate a hostname problem from a broader connection problem.
If ads remain after changing ad privacy settings, that result is consistent with the documented limits. Check whether the topic was removed, whether the specific app appears under App-suggested ads, and whether Ad measurement is actually off. Then inspect the app’s own privacy and advertising controls. Android’s global switches cannot report or disable mechanisms that an app implements outside them.
Keep a short note of the original choices and the changes you make. That makes it easier to identify whether a connectivity problem followed a provider-hostname change or whether an advertising change affected only one participating app. Because manufacturers and Android releases can move menus, use Settings search rather than assuming another phone’s screenshots will match yours.
Should you use both?
Yes, if you have both kinds of concern. Private DNS addresses exposure of DNS lookups to the network. Ad privacy settings address Android’s supported ad-personalization and measurement mechanisms. They do not duplicate each other, so turning on one does not make the other unnecessary.
A sensible approach is to choose the Private DNS mode that keeps your network reliable, then review ad topics, app suggestions, ad measurement, and Advertising ID separately. Record which changes you made so that troubleshooting is possible later. If an app behaves differently afterward, its own privacy or advertising settings may be the controlling factor rather than Android’s global switches.

Common questions and failure modes
“Does Private DNS block ads?”
Not by itself. Private DNS secures DNS questions and answers. It does not promise removal of ad requests, ad graphics, sponsored content, or in-app promotions. Any domain filtering would come from a resolver’s separate policy, not from the Android setting’s basic function.
“I removed an ad topic, but I still see similar ads. Did it fail?”
Not necessarily. Topic removal only changes the topic mechanism. Google says related ads may still appear, because apps can use other signals or their own policies.
Crashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minutePC Slower Than It Used to Be?
A free scan shows the junk files, broken settings and background clutter dragging Windows down - then fixes them in one click.Free scan · Windows 10 & 11“I blocked an app’s suggested ads, so why are that app’s ads still visible?”
Blocking removes that app’s associated suggestion data. Android explicitly notes that you may still see ads related to the app.
“Will deleting Advertising ID stop personalized advertising?”
No universal conclusion follows from deletion. Google Play services makes the deleted value unavailable by returning zeros, but apps can have their own settings, identifiers, and policies.
“Why can’t I find the menu shown in a guide?”
Menu paths vary by manufacturer and Android version. Use Settings search for Private DNS, Ads privacy, or Advertising ID. The Google paths above are general routes, not a guarantee of identical labels on every phone.
“Why does one app seem unaffected by Private DNS?”
An app may use an app-specific resolver or another networking implementation. Android’s guidance for apps targeting Android 9 says they should honor Private DNS, but that does not establish identical behavior for every app, browser, or device.

Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →What these controls cannot establish
- They cannot prove that a phone is free of advertisements.
- They cannot prove that every tracker, analytics system, or identifier has been disabled.
- They cannot show that every app uses Android’s system DNS resolver.
- They cannot replace an app’s own privacy controls, account settings, or policy choices.
- They cannot turn DNS encryption into encryption for all other network traffic.
The practical distinction is therefore straightforward: use Private DNS for the DNS transport question, and use Android’s ad privacy and Advertising ID controls for the specific advertising signals they expose. Treat each as a narrowly scoped privacy setting rather than a single switch for all ads or tracking.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does Private DNS block ads on Android?
No. It secures DNS questions and answers. It does not itself remove ad requests, ad images, sponsored content, or every tracker. Filtering, if offered by a particular resolver, is that resolver’s separate policy.
What does Android share through Ad topics?
Participating apps can receive topics Android derives from apps used on the device. Android says it shares up to three topics at a time and deletes ad topics after four weeks.
Best Value
If I turn off Ad topics, will related ads disappear?
No guarantee follows. An app can use other signals, contextual information, or its own data and policies to show a related ad.
What happens when I block App-suggested ads for an app?
Android deletes that app’s associated suggestion data. You may still see ads related to the app.
What does deleting Advertising ID do?
Google Play services makes the identifier unavailable; access attempts receive a string of zeros. Apps may still use their own identifiers or settings.
Why do Private DNS menus differ between phones?
Manufacturers and Android releases can change labels and menu placement. Search Settings for Private DNS, Ads privacy, Ad topics, or Advertising ID.
Can Private DNS protect every app?
Not necessarily. Apps targeting Android 9 should honor the platform behavior, but apps and browsers can implement their own resolver logic. Universal coverage is not established.
The Bottom Line
Private DNS protects the DNS exchange; Android’s ad privacy controls manage specific ad signals. Use Private DNS when your concern is DNS transport, and use Ad topics, App-suggested ads, Ad measurement, and Advertising ID controls for the corresponding advertising mechanisms. Expect narrower protection—not a guarantee of zero ads or zero tracking.
