Duck.ai is the clearest documented choice if you want a hosted chatbot that does not train on your conversations by default. DuckDuckGo says chats are not recorded or stored by default, requests are anonymized before they reach model providers, and those providers must delete prompts and responses immediately and never use Duck.ai conversations for training. Optional backups, feedback, legal requests, abuse prevention and file moderation create exceptions.
Claude is a strong standalone alternative when you use Incognito chats. Anthropic says Incognito conversations are not used to improve Claude, even when Model Improvement is enabled. Consumer ChatGPT requires action first: turn off Improve the model for everyone or use Temporary Chat. Business, Enterprise, Edu and API accounts have no-training-by-default protections.

What “does not train on your conversations” really means
Training is only one part of an AI service’s data lifecycle. A chatbot can keep a conversation in your account, retain it temporarily on backend systems, send it through safety filters, or preserve a copy when you submit feedback without using it to improve a general-purpose model.

Training and retention are different promises
A no-training policy means the provider says your prompts and responses are excluded from model-improvement datasets under the stated conditions. It does not automatically mean the service never sees the text, never stores it, or deletes every copy immediately. Duck.ai’s provider contract is unusually strict about immediate deletion, but it still lists legal, abuse-prevention, moderation and optional-sync exceptions. Claude documents backend deletion within 30 days after you delete a conversation, with longer periods for certain safety, feedback and model-improvement records. OpenAI’s consumer controls stop new conversations from being used for training; they do not necessarily remove material already incorporated into training runs or trained models.

Safety review and feedback are separate paths
Services may analyze a conversation to detect abuse or policy violations even when ordinary model training is disabled. A thumbs-up or thumbs-down submission can also create a retained copy for investigation or service improvement. Treat feedback as a separate data-sharing decision: do not submit feedback from a sensitive chat unless you accept the policy that applies to that submission.
Controls can be forward-looking
Turning a setting off generally governs future conversations. It is not a guaranteed recall mechanism for data that was previously included in a training process. If an old chat contains confidential material, delete it where the service allows and review the provider’s deletion and retention terms rather than assuming an opt-out erased historical use.

Duck.ai: the simplest default for private hosted chats
What DuckDuckGo promises
DuckDuckGo’s stated default is unusually direct: “By default, Duck.ai does not record or store any of your chats, and your conversations are not used to train chat models by DuckDuckGo or the underlying model providers.” The service says requests are anonymized before they are sent onward, including removal of metadata such as your IP address.

Duck.ai also says all of its model providers agree to two conditions: delete prompts and responses immediately after generating a reply, a practice it calls Zero Data Retention, and never use Duck.ai conversations to train their models. That combination addresses both major concerns—training and routine provider retention—rather than addressing training alone.
Exceptions you must understand
- Sync & Backup: enabling this optional feature changes the no-storage default because conversations must be retained for synchronization or recovery.
- Feedback sharing: sending feedback can share the associated exchange for review or improvement under the feedback process.
- Legal requirements: Duck.ai or a provider may retain or disclose data when required by law.
- Abuse prevention: security and misuse investigations can require additional processing.
- Uploaded files: files may undergo moderation, creating a separate analysis path from ordinary prompt handling.
How to use it with the lowest exposure
- Use Duck.ai without enabling Sync & Backup.
- Do not submit thumbs-up, thumbs-down or other feedback on a sensitive exchange.
- Keep confidential identifiers, account numbers and regulated records out of uploaded files, because file moderation is an explicit exception.
- Review the current privacy controls before each major use; policies and available model providers can change.
Duck.ai is therefore the best first try for someone asking, “What AI chatbot does not train on my conversations?” Its promise is a default, not an absolute guarantee against every legally or operationally necessary form of processing.
Claude: use Incognito mode, not ordinary assumptions
Why Incognito matters
Anthropic’s consumer privacy article dated March 16, 2026 states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” That makes Incognito the decisive control. If you need Claude’s standalone assistant experience while keeping a conversation out of model improvement, start the session in Incognito rather than relying on a general account preference.

Configure Claude for sensitive work
- Open Claude’s privacy controls and check the Model Improvement setting.
- For a sensitive conversation, start an Incognito chat before entering the prompt.
- Do not send feedback from that conversation unless you have read and accepted the feedback-retention terms.
- Delete the conversation when finished if you no longer need it in your account history.
Turning Model Improvement off is useful for ordinary chats, but Incognito is the clearest documented protection because Anthropic explicitly says it overrides an enabled improvement setting.

Anthropic says a deleted conversation disappears from chat history immediately and is deleted from backend storage within 30 days. That is a deletion timetable, not a promise that every related record vanishes instantly.
- If you allow model improvement, de-identified data may be retained for up to five years.
- Chats flagged for policy violations may be retained for up to two years.
- Feedback data may be retained for five years.
These exceptions explain why “Claude does not train on my chat” is incomplete without the word Incognito and without a discussion of feedback and safety review.

ChatGPT: opt out before you type, or use Temporary Chat
Consumer accounts
OpenAI says content from individual Free, Plus and Pro accounts may be used to train models. To opt out, use Settings > Data controls > Improve the model for everyone and turn the control off. OpenAI also identifies a Privacy Portal option labeled Do not train on my content.
The setting is forward-looking: it prevents new conversations from being used for training under the opt-out policy. It does not promise removal of information already included in training runs or already reflected in trained models.
Temporary Chat
Temporary Chat is the session-level alternative. OpenAI says temporary chats are not used to improve models while temporary, do not appear in chat history, and do not create or update memories. Choose this mode before entering sensitive information; switching after the conversation has begun cannot retroactively change how earlier messages were handled.
The feedback exception
Opting out does not make every later action harmless. OpenAI states that if you submit feedback after opting out, the entire conversation associated with that feedback may be used for training. Avoid feedback controls on confidential chats, even when Improve the model for everyone is off.
Business and API accounts
OpenAI states that inputs and outputs from ChatGPT Business, Enterprise, Edu and API products are not used to improve models by default. That is a stronger starting position than individual consumer accounts, but administrators should still define retention, access, logging and feedback procedures for their organization. “Not used for training” does not eliminate the need to govern who can view prompts or how long operational records remain available.
Which option fits your situation?
Choose Duck.ai when the default matters most
Pick Duck.ai if you want the least configuration and the clearest published combination of no training, no default chat storage, anonymized requests and immediate provider deletion. Keep Sync & Backup disabled and avoid feedback or sensitive uploads.
Choose Claude when you want a major standalone assistant
Use Claude’s Incognito mode when you prefer Claude’s own interface and capabilities but want an explicit no-improvement path. Remember that backend deletion, safety flags and feedback have their own retention rules.
Choose ChatGPT with the right account control
For a consumer account, turn off Improve the model for everyone before a sensitive session or select Temporary Chat. For organizational work, Business, Enterprise, Edu and API products provide no-training-by-default terms, subject to your company’s own data-governance requirements.
A practical privacy checklist for any AI chatbot
- Check the default: determine whether no training applies automatically or only after an opt-out.
- Use the narrowest mode: Duck.ai without Sync & Backup, Claude Incognito, or ChatGPT Temporary Chat.
- Separate deletion from training: find the provider’s backend-deletion period and any longer retention categories.
- Do not confuse feedback with ordinary use: a rating can trigger a separate retained copy.
- Limit what you send: remove names, passwords, customer identifiers, health details and proprietary source code whenever possible.
- Treat uploads separately: files can be moderated or scanned even when ordinary prompts receive no-training treatment.
- Recheck settings: privacy policies, labels and available account features can change, so verify the control immediately before using the service.
Bottom line
For the simplest documented privacy posture, start with Duck.ai and leave optional storage and feedback features off. For Claude, Incognito is the key requirement. For consumer ChatGPT, disable model improvement or use Temporary Chat before sharing anything sensitive; business and API products have stronger no-training defaults. In every case, keep the distinction clear: exclusion from AI training is not the same as zero retention, zero safety review or automatic deletion of data already used in earlier training.
