There is no single, provably “most private” AI chatbot. The strongest choice depends on which kind of control you need: stopping model training, keeping chats out of history, deleting stored conversations, limiting retention, reducing human review, or using a managed business account with administrator controls. ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini expose different combinations of those controls, and each has exceptions.

A training opt-out is not the same as deletion. Temporary or incognito modes are not zero-retention guarantees. The comparison below covers consumer controls documented by the providers, plus the important differences for managed workspaces.

What “private” means for an AI chatbot

When you send a prompt, several separate data paths may be involved. A provider may process the text to generate a reply, save the conversation in your account history, use eligible conversations to improve models, route material for abuse or safety review, retain feedback you submit, or preserve records required for security and legal obligations. One switch rarely governs all of these paths.

Evaluate a chatbot on six questions:

  • Training: Are new conversations used to improve the provider’s models?
  • History: Does the conversation remain visible in your account?
  • Deletion: What happens after you delete it, and when is backend storage removed?
  • Temporary use: Does an incognito or temporary mode still retain a copy for safety?
  • Human access: Can reviewers see selected conversations for safety, quality or feedback handling?
  • Administration: Do a workplace, school or API account impose different defaults and retention rules?

These are different controls. For example, turning off model improvement can stop future chats from training a model while leaving the same chats in your history.

Consumer controls compared

Service and account Training or model improvement History, deletion and temporary use Important qualification
ChatGPT consumer Turning off Improve the model for everyone means new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models. Ordinary chats can stay in history. Temporary Chats do not appear in history and do not create or update memories. OpenAI may retain a copy of a Temporary Chat for up to 30 days for safety. The training setting does not delete existing chats. OpenAI says Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare workspaces and the API are excluded from training by default, subject to account and workspace controls.
Claude consumer (Free, Pro, Max and supported Claude Code use) Chats may be used for model improvement if you allow it, if content is flagged for safety review, or through another explicit opt-in. Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude. Deleting a chat removes it from your history immediately. Anthropic says it removes the conversation from backend storage within 30 days. If improvement is enabled, relevant new or resumed chats may remain in de-identified training pipelines for up to five years. Policy-flagged inputs and outputs, and feedback, have separate retention terms.
Gemini Apps personal account With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Temporary chats are not used to train models. Keep Activity is on by default for adults. Saved activity auto-deletes after 18 months by default, with options for 3 months, 36 months or indefinite retention. When Keep Activity is off or a chat is temporary, Google keeps chats with the account for 72 hours. Some chats reviewed by human reviewers are retained for up to three years. Deleting activity does not remove chats already reviewed, and turning off Keep Activity does not stop processing needed to provide and protect the service.

The figures describe different data paths, so they are not an apples-to-apples privacy score. A 30-day safety copy, a 30-day backend-deletion target and a three-year reviewed-chat period refer to different categories of data.

ChatGPT: separate training, history and temporary controls

Turning off model improvement

In a consumer ChatGPT account, open Settings → Data Controls and switch off Improve the model for everyone. OpenAI’s stated effect is specific: “When Improve the model for everyone is off, your new conversations won’t be used to train OpenAI models.” The setting applies to new conversations; it does not erase prior chats already stored in your account.

Using Temporary Chats

Temporary Chats stay out of your chat history and do not create or update memories. They are therefore useful when you do not want a prompt to become part of your normal account record. They are not an immediate-destruction mode: OpenAI may keep a copy for up to 30 days for safety purposes.

Memory is a separate decision

Chat history, model training and memory/personalization are separate features. Disabling training does not automatically disable memory, and deleting a conversation does not mean every personalization record has been removed. Check the memory controls independently when a prompt contains personal details.

Managed accounts

OpenAI says content from Business, Enterprise, Edu and Healthcare workspaces, as well as the API Platform, is not used to train models by default. A workspace administrator can still control access, retention and audit settings, so a managed account may provide stronger organizational governance while giving the individual user less control over those policies.

Claude: incognito use and a defined deletion window

Model-improvement permission

Claude’s consumer settings allow you to decide whether chats can contribute to model improvement. Anthropic also lists safety-flagged material and other explicit opt-ins as separate routes through which content may be used. If model improvement is enabled, relevant new or resumed chats can remain in de-identified training pipelines for up to five years.

Incognito chats

Anthropic states: “Your Incognito chats are not used to improve Claude, even if you have enabled Model Improvement in your Privacy Settings.” Incognito therefore addresses the training question, but it should not be read as a promise that no safety or legal processing can occur.

Deleting a conversation

Deleting a Claude chat removes it from the visible history immediately. Anthropic says the conversation is removed from backend storage within 30 days. That is a provider-stated deletion period, not a claim that every derivative record disappears at the same instant.

Safety and feedback exceptions

Anthropic describes separate retention for policy-flagged content and feedback. Inputs and outputs flagged for Usage Policy violations may be retained for up to two years, while associated trust-and-safety classification scores may be retained for up to seven years. These periods apply to those safety records, not to every ordinary deleted chat.

Gemini: activity controls with a 72-hour service window

Keep Activity

For a personal Gemini Apps account, Keep Activity is on by default for adults. In Gemini Apps activity controls, you can turn it off or choose an automatic deletion period. The default is 18 months; Google offers 3-month, 36-month and indefinite options.

What happens when it is off

With Keep Activity off, future chats are not used to train Google’s AI models unless you submit feedback. Google says it keeps chats associated with the account for 72 hours when Keep Activity is off. Temporary chats follow the same 72-hour account-retention window and are not used to train models.

Human review and service protection

Keep Activity is not a no-processing switch. Google’s Privacy Hub says: “Even if your Keep Activity setting is off, Google still uses your chats to respond to you and help protect Google, our users, and the public, including with help from human reviewers.” Some chats selected for review can be retained for up to three years, and deleting activity does not remove chats that have already entered that review process.

Retention periods you should not confuse

Data path Provider-stated period What it means
ChatGPT Temporary Chat safety copy Up to 30 days A temporary conversation can remain available to OpenAI for safety handling even though it is absent from normal history.
Deleted Claude conversation Removed from backend storage within 30 days The visible chat disappears immediately; backend deletion follows within the stated period.
Claude model-improvement pipeline Up to five years Applies to relevant chats allowed into de-identified training pipelines, not every Claude conversation.
Claude Usage Policy records Up to two years for flagged inputs/outputs; up to seven years for related classification scores These are safety records with their own retention rules.
Gemini Keep Activity off or temporary chat 72 hours Google says chats remain associated with the account for this service and safety window.
Gemini activity auto-delete 18 months by default; 3, 36 months or indefinite by choice Controls saved activity, not material already separated for review.
Gemini human-reviewed chats Up to three years Deleting activity does not remove chats already reviewed.

How to configure the least-retentive practical setup

  1. Choose the account deliberately. Decide whether you are using a personal account, a company or school workspace, or an API integration. Managed plans can have different training defaults and administrator access.
  2. Disable model improvement before sending sensitive prompts. In ChatGPT, use Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone. In Claude, review Privacy Settings → Model Improvement. In Gemini, open Gemini Apps activity controls and turn Keep Activity off if you do not want future chats used for training, subject to the feedback exception.
  3. Select the provider’s temporary mode for one-off sensitive work. Use ChatGPT Temporary Chat, Claude Incognito, or a Gemini temporary chat. Check the provider’s stated safety-retention period rather than assuming immediate deletion.
  4. Review memory and personalization separately. In ChatGPT, inspect memory controls in addition to Data Controls. A training opt-out alone does not govern saved memories.
  5. Delete ordinary chats after use. Do this even when training is disabled, because training and account history are separate. Note the provider’s backend-deletion window.
  6. Avoid feedback on sensitive material. Submitting a thumbs-up, thumbs-down or written feedback can create a separate handling path, particularly where a provider says feedback is retained for improvement or safety.
  7. Keep identifying information out of prompts. Settings cannot make a hosted service equivalent to an offline model. Remove names, account numbers, medical identifiers, private keys and confidential files unless your organization has approved the service and its controls.

Which service fits which privacy priority?

If your priority is stopping routine training

All three services provide a consumer control that can prevent ordinary future chats from training models, but the scope differs. ChatGPT’s switch applies to new conversations; Claude’s choice has incognito and safety exceptions; Gemini’s Keep Activity-off setting has a feedback exception and still permits service-protection processing.

If your priority is keeping chats out of visible history

ChatGPT Temporary Chat and Claude Incognito are designed for this use. Gemini temporary chats also avoid normal saved activity, while Google states that a 72-hour account copy remains for service and safety purposes.

If you need a documented deletion timeline

Claude gives the clearest ordinary-chat statement: deletion from history is immediate and backend removal occurs within 30 days. ChatGPT provides a 30-day maximum for Temporary Chat safety copies, which is a different situation. Gemini’s 72-hour window applies when Keep Activity is off or a chat is temporary, while reviewed material can follow a longer retention path.

If you need organizational governance

Look at managed workspace or API terms rather than consumer settings. OpenAI explicitly states that Business, Enterprise, Edu, Healthcare and API content is excluded from training by default. Administrators may still set retention, access and auditing rules that individual users cannot change.

Common privacy mistakes

  • “I turned off training, so the chat is gone.” Training controls do not delete history.
  • “Temporary means nothing is retained.” ChatGPT can retain temporary chats for up to 30 days; Gemini keeps temporary or Keep Activity-off chats for 72 hours; Claude lists separate safety and legal exceptions.
  • “Deleting activity removes every copy.” Google says chats already reviewed by humans can remain for up to three years. Anthropic separates ordinary deletion from policy and feedback records.
  • “The personal setting applies to my work account.” Workspace administrators and plan defaults can change who controls access and retention.
  • “A privacy toggle blocks all human access.” Safety, abuse prevention, feedback and service operation can involve human reviewers under provider policies.
  • “A provider’s shortest number wins.” Retention numbers describe different data categories and cannot be ranked without knowing the processing path.

Scope and limits of this comparison

This comparison is limited to current, documented consumer controls for ChatGPT, Claude and Gemini, with the managed-account distinction noted where the providers publish it. It is not a complete ranking of every chatbot. Comparable primary documentation for services such as Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Meta AI was not established for this comparison, so no conclusion about those services is warranted here.
