If your requirement is that prompts and documents stay on your computer, use a downloaded model with a local-capable application such as Ollama or LM Studio, then run it with cloud and web features disabled. “Local” describes where the model generates its answer; it does not automatically mean the application makes no network connections. Apple Intelligence is a privacy-oriented hybrid, not a strictly offline AI: many tasks run on-device, while more complex requests can be sent to Apple’s Private Cloud Compute.
What “private AI” means in practice
There are three different questions behind the phrase private AI:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Where is inference performed? A local model generates tokens on your computer. A cloud model sends at least part of the request to a provider’s servers.
- Does prompt content leave the device? This is the decisive question when handling confidential text. A local model can satisfy a strict no-upload requirement, provided the application does not route the request to a cloud model or web service.
- What other network activity occurs? An application may check for updates, search a model catalogue, download model files, send diagnostic metadata, or offer optional web search even when your selected model runs locally.
Consequently, “local” is not a synonym for “air-gapped.” It describes the location of model inference. You still need to check the application’s privacy policy, selected processing mode, model source, update behavior and network controls.

| LM Studio with a downloaded local model | On your device, including offline use | Downloaded models can run without an internet connection | Turn off optional cloud models and web search; use the internet only when downloading models or checking for updates |
| Apple Intelligence | On-device for many tasks; Private Cloud Compute for some complex requests | Apple describes non-retention protections for Private Cloud Compute and provides transparency logging | Check device, language, region and feature availability, and determine whether the particular task is sent to Private Cloud Compute |

Ollama: local inference with an explicit cloud boundary
What its policy says
Ollama’s privacy policy states: “We do not collect, store, transmit, or have access to your prompts, responses, model interactions, or other content you process locally.” The same policy says Ollama collects limited device and usage metadata. It also explains that content sent to cloud-hosted models is processed transiently to provide that service. These are Ollama’s own policy claims, not an independent audit.
How to create a local-only session
- Install Ollama on a computer capable of running the model you intend to use.
- Download the model files while you have an internet connection. A model must be present on the computer before it can run without network access.
- In the Ollama interface or client you use, select the downloaded local model. Do not select a cloud-hosted model or a feature that describes remote processing.
- Test the model with non-sensitive text first. Observe whether the application indicates local operation and whether any cloud option is enabled.
- For a strict no-upload workflow, disconnect the computer from the internet or block the application’s external connections with your operating system or network firewall after downloads and updates are complete.
- Keep a record of which model file and application version you approved. Recheck the mode after updates because an application can add or change optional online features.
What this protects against—and what it does not
When Ollama is actually running a local model, its policy says the provider cannot access the local prompts and responses. That does not mean every file on the computer is automatically protected, nor does it cover content you deliberately send to a cloud-hosted model. It also does not eliminate metadata collection described in the policy or network activity from your operating system, extensions and other software.
LM Studio: an offline-capable desktop workflow
Local and optional online features are separate
LM Studio’s privacy policy says: “If you download and run models locally, none of your messages, chat histories, and documents are ever transmitted from your system – everything is saved locally on your device.” The policy separately describes optional cloud requests as transient and not retained after the request completes. Do not extend the local-use statement to optional cloud services or to every third-party model distributor.
LM Studio also describes update checks and model searches or downloads. Those activities require internet access even if the eventual chat runs offline. Its optional cloud model and web-search features create additional paths for data to leave the device.
Steps for an offline LM Studio setup
- Install LM Studio and let it perform any required update or catalogue checks before you isolate the machine.
- Download the model you plan to use. Model downloads are a separate network activity from generating a response.
- Load that downloaded model in the local chat interface and verify that the interface identifies local inference rather than a cloud model.
- Disable or avoid cloud-model and web-search controls. If the application offers a setting that permits fallback to a remote model, turn it off for sensitive work.
- Disconnect the computer from the internet and send a harmless test prompt. The model should continue responding if all required files are local.
- Store chat histories and documents according to your own retention policy. LM Studio’s statement describes transmission, not a promise that files on your computer are automatically encrypted, backed up or deleted.
When LM Studio is not truly offline
A local model can coexist with online model search, update checks and web retrieval. If your policy is “no prompt content leaves this device,” those features may be acceptable when they do not receive the prompt. If your policy is “the application must make no network connection at all,” use a disconnected computer or enforce a firewall rule after completing downloads and updates.
Apple Intelligence: private by design, but not fully offline
On-device processing and Private Cloud Compute
Apple’s support guide says: “In many cases, Apple Intelligence models run entirely on device so that a task can be completed without data leaving your device.” It also explains that more complex requests can use Private Cloud Compute (PCC). Apple says data processed there is not stored or made accessible to Apple after the request is fulfilled.

That makes Apple Intelligence a hybrid option. It can reduce exposure for many everyday tasks, but it cannot satisfy a rule that forbids every request from leaving the device unless you use a mode that guarantees on-device processing for the specific task. Feature routing can depend on the request, device, language, region and software availability.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →What Apple says PCC records
Apple’s Apple Intelligence and Privacy documentation says it may collect limited, non-content information about a PCC request, such as approximate request and response size, features used and processing time. Apple says this information does not include the request content or returned result, is not identifiable and is not linked to an Apple Account. Apple also describes transparency logging so you can inspect requests sent off-device.
These controls improve visibility and limit retention according to Apple’s documentation, but they are different from never sending a request away from your device. Review the transparency information when your work requires a strict local boundary.
Hardware example, not a minimum requirement
Apple’s 2025 technical report describes an approximately 3-billion-parameter on-device Apple Foundation Model optimized for Apple silicon: Apple Intelligence Foundation Language Models: Tech Report 2025. This is a description of Apple’s compact model, not a general minimum specification for local AI. Other models can require substantially different amounts of memory and processing capacity.
Choosing hardware and a model without false certainty
Local inference is constrained by the computer you already own and by the model you choose. Larger or more capable models generally demand more memory and processing resources, while compact models are easier to run locally but may be less capable for difficult tasks. The supplied primary sources do not provide a current compatibility matrix, minimum computer specification, benchmark or energy comparison for Ollama, LM Studio and Apple Intelligence.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Before downloading a model, check:
- Whether your operating system and processor architecture are supported by the application.
- How much system or unified memory the model documentation recommends.
- Whether you need long documents, image understanding, coding, translation or another capability that the particular model supports.
- How much disk space the model files require and whether your backups will include chat histories or documents.
- Whether the model license permits your intended personal, business or research use.
Do not treat a vendor’s compact-model figure as a promise that every model of the same size will run equally well. Parameter count alone does not determine practical speed, quality or memory use.

A privacy checklist for local AI
Define the boundary before installing anything
Write down whether your requirement is “prompt content must not be uploaded,” “the application must never connect to the internet,” or “the provider must not retain content.” Those are different requirements. A local application can meet the first while still checking for updates; a private cloud can claim non-retention while still processing a request off-device.
Verify the selected processing mode
- Look for an explicit local or on-device indicator.
- Check the model name and location. A downloaded model and a similarly named cloud model may appear in the same application.
- Disable cloud fallback, web search and remote tools when handling sensitive material.
- After an application update, review these choices again.
Control network access when the requirement is absolute
Use airplane mode, a disconnected network or a firewall rule during sensitive sessions if you need a technical guarantee that the application cannot reach a server. Test the workflow with an innocuous prompt first. Remember that reconnecting later allows update checks, telemetry or other services to resume.
Consider the model supply chain
Downloading a model requires an online step. Review where the file comes from, who publishes it and whether the application contacts a model catalogue. LM Studio’s privacy statement about local messages does not establish the practices of every third-party model distributor. Keep approved model files and checksums under your own control when that matters to your threat model.
Protect data on the computer itself
Local processing moves the trust boundary to your device. Use operating-system accounts, disk encryption, screen locking and backups appropriate to the sensitivity of your files. Clear chat histories and temporary documents according to your retention policy. A provider’s statement that it cannot access local prompts does not protect data from another person or program that can access your computer.
Capability, privacy and convenience trade-offs
| Decision factor | Downloaded local model | Apple Intelligence hybrid |
|---|---|---|
| Prompt content leaving the device | Can be prevented when the model and application stay local and network access is controlled | Many tasks stay on-device, but complex requests may go to PCC |
| Internet requirement | Internet is needed for application and model downloads; generation can work offline | Availability and routing depend on Apple’s supported devices, software, languages and services |
| Web information | Unavailable while disconnected unless you deliberately enable a web feature | Not equivalent to an offline model; inspect the task’s processing path |
| Provider visibility | Ollama and LM Studio make policy statements about local content; both also describe optional online activity | Apple describes limited PCC metadata, non-retention of processed data and transparency logging |
| Hardware needs | Depends on the chosen model and computer; no universal minimum is established here | Apple’s report gives an approximately 3-billion-parameter model optimized for Apple silicon, not a general requirement |
Common failure modes and fixes
The model stops working after you disconnect
The model files may not have finished downloading, or the application may be trying to use a cloud model. Reconnect temporarily, verify that the complete model is installed, select the local version and test again before disconnecting.
A “local” app still shows internet traffic
Update checks, model searches, downloads, crash reporting or optional web features can explain traffic without the prompt being uploaded. If you require zero network activity, block the application at the firewall or keep the computer offline. If you only prohibit prompt uploads, inspect which service made the connection and whether it received content.

The answer quality is not adequate
Try a model suited to the task and your computer’s available memory rather than assuming every local model has the same capabilities. A larger model may improve difficult work but can be slower or impossible to run comfortably on the same hardware. Apple Intelligence uses PCC when you expected on-device processing
That behavior is consistent with Apple’s description of a hybrid system in which complex requests can use PCC. Consult Apple’s transparency information for the request and decide whether the task is appropriate for a service that processes it off-device, even with Apple’s stated non-retention protections.
Which approach fits your privacy requirement?
Choose local Ollama or LM Studio when zero upload is non-negotiable
Download the model, verify local mode, disable cloud and web features, and isolate the computer during sensitive sessions. This is the clearest route when you need prompts and documents to remain on your device.
Choose Apple Intelligence when managed hybrid privacy is acceptable
Apple Intelligence may be convenient for supported Apple devices and can complete many tasks locally. It is appropriate only if you accept that some complex requests may use PCC and you are comfortable with Apple’s stated processing, metadata and transparency model.
Use a cloud service only with an explicit data decision
If a task needs current web information or capabilities unavailable from your local model, treat cloud processing as a deliberate exception. Check the provider’s current policy, avoid sending material outside the approved scope and do not infer legal, medical or regulated-data compliance from consumer privacy statements.
Policies change, so recheck before sensitive work
Ollama’s and LM Studio’s privacy pages, Apple’s support documentation and Apple’s legal privacy page are provider-controlled documents that can change. Revisit the current wording when you install a new version, enable a new feature or begin handling more sensitive information. Preserve the exact processing choice alongside your organization’s own security controls; no vendor policy replaces a threat model, access control or retention policy.
