Before you paste a portfolio, statement or financial question into an AI assistant, change the controls that govern model improvement, temporary sessions, memory, connected accounts and app actions. In ChatGPT, the essential sequence is Settings → Data controls → Improve the model for everyone → Off, then use Temporary Chat for sensitive work, review financial memories, disconnect unused finance sources, revoke unnecessary app access and exclude all payment-card data. These controls are separate: turning one off does not delete old conversations, erase memories, disconnect accounts or revoke app permissions.
Set a privacy baseline before opening your research session
Financial research often combines information that is harmless on its own with information that becomes sensitive in combination: account balances, transaction dates, employer names, tax status, addresses, investment objectives and debt obligations. An AI assistant can help organize public filings or explain a ratio, but the safest workflow is to decide what the service may retain, use for model improvement, remember, retrieve from connected sources and do on your behalf before you provide any private context.

Use this order because each step addresses a different data path:
- Disable model improvement for new consumer chats.
- Start a Temporary Chat when the subject is sensitive.
- Review and remove unnecessary memories, including financial memories.
- Disconnect bank, credit-report and other financial sources that are not needed.
- Audit connected-app permissions and action approvals.
- Remove identifying details and never enter cardholder data.
- Confirm whether your account is a consumer service or a managed business workspace.
- Verify every material answer against current primary sources before acting.
The exact labels and availability can vary by geography, account plan and workspace administrator. If a control is missing, use the provider’s privacy and data-controls documentation rather than assuming that another setting provides the same protection.

Turn off model improvement for new chats
ChatGPT path
- Open ChatGPT and select your profile or account menu.
- Choose Settings.
- Open Data controls.
- Set Improve the model for everyone to Off.
OpenAI says that, after opting out, new conversations are not used to improve its models. The choice applies across devices for the signed-in account, so you do not need to repeat it on every phone or computer.
What this switch does not do
- It does not erase conversations that already exist in your history.
- It does not remove saved memories.
- It does not disconnect a bank account, credit report or other connected source.
- It does not eliminate every operational access described in the provider’s policies.
- It does not override a workspace policy imposed by an administrator.
Do not submit thumbs-up or thumbs-down feedback on a highly sensitive conversation unless you accept the additional data use. OpenAI documents that feedback can cause the associated conversation to be used for training even when the general model-improvement setting is off.
Use Temporary Chat for a sensitive research session
Start a Temporary Chat before discussing a real household budget, an identifiable portfolio or a pending transaction. OpenAI documents that Temporary Chat does not appear in chat history and is not used to create memories. It is therefore a session-level minimization measure, not a deletion tool for information already stored in ordinary chats.
When Temporary Chat is appropriate
- You need help interpreting a redacted statement or a public filing and do not need the conversation later.
- You are testing a financial-research prompt with realistic but non-identifying ranges.
- You are working on a one-off question involving debts, income or investment goals.
When it is not sufficient
If a prior ordinary chat contains the same information, delete that conversation separately when appropriate. If an account is connected to a finance provider, disconnecting the source is a separate action. Temporary Chat also does not make an unsafe prompt safe: card numbers, CVVs and PINs should never be entered in the first place.

Audit memory, especially financial memory
Memory can make an assistant more convenient by carrying context between conversations, but persistent context is a poor fit for details that change or that you would not want reused unexpectedly. Review the memory controls before a financial-research project and remove goals, obligations, income details, risk tolerance or account information that no longer serves a clear purpose.
Review and delete saved financial context
- Open the account menu and go to Settings.
- Open the memory controls and inspect saved items.
- Look for the dedicated financial-memory area described in OpenAI’s Finances documentation.
- Delete each financial memory that is unnecessary, outdated or too identifying.
- Recheck the list after the deletion and start a new session if you want a clean context.
Deleting a memory is not the same as deleting the conversation in which the information first appeared. Treat memory, chat history and connected-source data as separate inventories.
Disconnect unused bank and credit sources
Bank accounts and credit reports are separate connections. Keep only the source required for the immediate task, and remove every unused source from the finance area. Disconnecting prevents future connected access; it does not automatically delete information that has already been copied into conversation history. Delete relevant conversations separately when appropriate.

- For a question about spending categories, export a redacted category total instead of granting ongoing transaction access.
- For a question about a credit score, provide the score range and date rather than connecting a complete report unless the connection is necessary.
- After finishing a task that required a connection, disconnect it if you do not expect to use it again soon.
- Check whether a connection can read data only or can also initiate an action; do not grant action capability for analysis-only work.
Availability, retention and disconnection behavior can differ by provider, plan and region. Read the connection’s own permission screen rather than assuming that “disconnect” means “delete all historical copies.”

Review connected-app permissions and action approvals
Connected apps have their own permission layer. Remove apps you no longer use, inspect the approval level for each remaining app and choose a setting that requires confirmation before an action whenever that option is available.
Understand the distinction between approval and access
An approval setting controls when the assistant asks before performing an action. Changing it does not revoke access that was already granted. To end access, remove or disconnect the app itself. App permissions are also independent of memory, chat retention and model-improvement choices.
Permission questions to answer for every app
- What data can the app read?
- Can it write, send, transfer, purchase or change anything?
- Does it expose full records or only the fields needed for this task?
- Will the assistant ask for confirmation before an external action?
- How do you revoke access, and where is that audit trail shown?
For investment research, read-only access is usually the appropriate boundary. Do not enable an action merely because it makes an answer faster.

Do not paste or upload a primary account number, card-security code (CVV), PIN or other cardholder data into a prompt, file or custom GPT. OpenAI’s customer-responsibility guidance specifically says not to use ChatGPT inputs—including conversations, files and GPTs—to enter, upload or share cardholder data as defined by the Payment Card Industry Data Security Standard.

Use a secure payment route instead
When a billing transaction is required, use the provider’s designated secure payment page. Do not put card details into a chat merely because the assistant is helping with a subscription, reimbursement or budgeting exercise.
Redact documents before uploading
- Cover or remove full card and bank-account numbers.
- Remove CVVs, PINs, one-time codes and login credentials.
- Delete names, postal addresses, tax identifiers and employee identifiers when they are not needed.
- Strip document metadata that can reveal an author, location or internal file path.
- Replace an account with a label such as
Brokerage Aand retain the mapping offline.
Minimize every financial prompt
The safest prompt contains the smallest amount of information that can produce a useful answer. Replace exact values with ranges when precision is not necessary, and use synthetic examples to test a method. For instance, ask how to compare a 20% stock allocation with a 30% allocation using fictional figures instead of pasting a complete personal statement.

OpenAI says authorized personnel or trusted service providers may access consumer content for limited operational reasons and advises users not to enter information they would not want reviewed or used. That is a practical reason to redact even when a setting appears protective.

Do not assume that a work email automatically gives you business-grade privacy. Confirm the actual plan and workspace policy before sending confidential research.

Business defaults do not make a workspace automatically appropriate for every regulated use. An administrator may be able to retain, review or restrict content, and a connected third-party application may have separate terms.
Verify financial answers before relying on them
An AI assistant is a research aid, not a source of guaranteed prices, filings or forecasts. The UK Financial Conduct Authority (FCA) warns that “a lot of what it’s trained on can be outdated,” advises users to double-check facts and data, and says general-purpose tools such as ChatGPT or Copilot are not regulated by the FCA. The FCA also states that AI cannot predict the future or sudden unexpected events.
A verification workflow for every material claim
- Ask the assistant to identify the date, jurisdiction and source behind each factual claim.
- Open the original filing, regulator notice, fund document, issuer release or official statistical series.
- Check that the source is current and applies to the security, account type and country you are researching.
- Recalculate important figures independently, especially returns, fees, taxes, yields and debt costs.
- Record the source links and retrieval dates in your research notes.
- Obtain qualified legal, tax or investment advice before acting on a decision with material consequences.
Ask the assistant to separate facts, assumptions, calculations and uncertainties. A fluent explanation is not evidence that the underlying information is current or correct.

The Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has warned that companies that retain or use consumer data for other purposes without clear, conspicuous notice and affirmative express consent—including by burying disclosures in hyperlinks, legal language or fine print—risk violating the law. Use the provider’s privacy policy and data-controls pages as the source of truth, and revisit them when the product, plan or connected feature changes.
Pay attention to definitions rather than headlines: “improve the model,” “retain,” “store,” “remember,” “share,” “connected source” and “action approval” describe different operations. A privacy notice that covers one operation does not automatically govern the others.
A practical preflight checklist
- Model improvement: Off for new consumer chats.
- Session: Temporary Chat selected for sensitive, one-off work.
- Memory: Unneeded general and financial memories deleted.
- Sources: Only required bank or credit connections remain; unused ones are disconnected.
- Apps: Unused apps removed; remaining permissions are read-only where possible; action confirmations enabled.
- Inputs: No card numbers, CVVs, PINs, passwords, tax IDs or full account numbers.
- Redaction: Names, addresses, metadata and unnecessary transaction detail removed.
- Workspace: Consumer, Business, Enterprise or API status confirmed, along with administrator policy.
- Evidence: Primary sources, publication dates and calculations checked before any decision.
If sensitive information has already been shared
- Stop adding related details and do not submit feedback on the conversation.
- Delete the affected ordinary chats when appropriate; disabling model improvement alone does not erase them.
- Review and delete saved memories that contain the information.
- Disconnect the bank, credit or app source that is no longer needed.
- If credentials, card data or authentication codes were exposed, contact the financial institution, replace credentials and follow its incident process.
- Check the workspace or app’s audit and retention controls if the conversation occurred under an employer or shared account.
For future sessions, begin with synthetic or redacted data and add precision only when it is essential to the analysis. Privacy settings reduce exposure; they do not turn an AI assistant into a regulated custodian, financial adviser or secure payment processor.
