Privacy settings that limit location tracking on iPhone and Android (2026 guide)

To reduce unnecessary location tracking, start with each app’s location permission, then turn off precise location where an approximate area is enough. Audit background access, device-wide location switches, wireless scanning, and stored histories separately: each control affects a different kind of location use. Emergency location transmission can still occur when you call or text an emergency number.

Start with the controls that make the biggest difference

Location privacy has four separate dimensions: which app can request a location, how accurate that location is, whether access continues in the background, and whether a service stores a history. Changing only one setting can leave the others untouched.

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. Audit app permissions. Set most apps to one-time, “while in use,” “ask,” or “never” access.
  2. Reduce precision. Use approximate location for weather, nearby recommendations, and similar features that do not need a pinpoint.
  3. Remove background access. Avoid “Always” on iPhone and “Allow all the time” on Android unless a feature genuinely needs continuous updates.
  4. Review stored history. iPhone Significant Locations & Routes and Google Account Timeline are separate from the current-location switch.
  5. Use device-wide switches only when necessary. They block ordinary app access broadly but can disable maps, lost-device tools, time-zone adjustment, local results, automations, and safety features.

The labels below are the current Apple and Google paths. Android menus can vary by manufacturer and software version, but the controls are generally under Settings > Location.

iPhone: limit location access app by app

1. Open the Location Services list

Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services. The list shows every app that has requested location and its current permission. Open each entry rather than changing only the global switch.

2. Choose the narrowest permission that still works

Use these options according to what the app actually does:

  • Never: The app cannot use location from iPhone Location Services.
  • Ask Next Time Or When I Share: iOS asks again when the app requests location, giving you a decision at the moment of use.
  • While Using the App: Location is available while the app is open and being used. Some features may continue briefly for a task you started in the app.
  • Always: The app may receive location in the background. Keep this for a clear use case such as a navigation or safety feature that must continue when the screen is not active.

For shopping, games, social apps, news, and most utilities, “While Using” or “Ask Next Time Or When I Share” is usually less permissive than “Always.” If an app does not need location at all, choose “Never.”

3. Turn off Precise Location when an area is enough

Open an app’s permission page and switch Precise Location off. The app can then receive an approximate area rather than a pinpoint position. Weather, local discovery, and regional content can often work with this reduced precision, while turn-by-turn navigation, delivery-driver positioning, and some anti-fraud checks may need greater accuracy.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Precision is independent of permission. An app set to “While Using” can still receive a highly accurate position unless you disable Precise Location; an app set to “Never” receives no Location Services position regardless of the precision setting.

4. Remove ordinary app access globally only when you accept the disruption

At Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, turn off Location Services to stop ordinary apps from using location through that system service. Apple warns that doing so limits the performance of Apple and third-party features. Maps positioning, local search, automatic time-zone changes, location-based automations, and some Find My functions may be less useful or unavailable.

Apple describes the scope this way: “When Location Services are off, apps can’t use your location from Location Services in the foreground or background.” This is a broad emergency measure, not a replacement for reviewing individual permissions.

iPhone: reduce system collection and delete stored places

Review System Services

From Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services, scroll to System Services. Review services such as location-based suggestions, location-based advertising, analytics, and other personalization features. Turn off services you do not use, understanding that suggestions, ads, diagnostics, or automations may become less relevant.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Disable Significant Locations & Routes

Open System Services > Significant Locations or Significant Locations & Routes (the wording depends on the iOS release). Turn the feature off if you do not want the device maintaining a history used for personalization.

Clear existing Significant Locations data

Use Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services > System Services > Significant Locations (or Significant Locations & Routes) > Clear History. Apple says this deletion applies across devices signed in to the same Apple Account. Turning the feature off controls future collection; clearing history removes the saved places already associated with the account.

Android: control app permissions, precision, and scanning

1. Check the device-wide Use location switch

Open Settings > Location and review Use location. Turning it off blocks ordinary app access to the device’s location. It also affects Maps, local search, time-zone behavior, location-based routines, and finding a lost device. Google documents exceptions for emergency services and carrier handling, so this switch should not be treated as a guarantee that no location can ever be transmitted.

2. Audit every app under App location permissions

Go to Settings > Location > App location permissions. For each app, select the least permissive option that supports its purpose:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Allow only while in use: The app can use location while you are actively using it.
  • Ask every time or allow when I share: Android requests permission when the app needs location, depending on the device’s wording and Android version.
  • Allow all the time: Background access remains available. Reserve it for features that clearly need ongoing updates.
  • Don’t allow: The app cannot use Android’s location permission.

Some Android builds show a one-time or “only this time” choice during a permission prompt. Use it for a task that should not create an ongoing grant.

3. Turn off Use precise location per app

On Android 12 and later, an app’s permission page can include Use precise location. Switch it off when an approximate area is sufficient. This setting is separate from whether the app is allowed to use location and from Android’s device-level Location Accuracy setting.

4. Understand Location Accuracy

Under Settings > Location, Android’s Location Accuracy controls whether additional wireless signals and sensors help calculate the device’s position. Disabling it can reduce accuracy and affect Maps, navigation, and lost-device features. It does not revoke an app’s permission: an app that is allowed to use location may still receive a less accurate result, while an app set to “Don’t allow” receives no permitted location either way.

5. Consider Wi-Fi and Bluetooth scanning

Open Settings > Location > Location Services and review Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning. Turn them off if you want to reduce the use of nearby wireless signals as additional inputs to location calculations. Nearby-device discovery and some indoor or low-signal positioning can become less reliable.

Stored location history is a separate privacy decision

Google Account Timeline

Android’s current-location switch does not by itself erase places previously saved to your Google Account. Open your Google Account’s Activity controls and review Timeline. Google says Timeline is off by default, can be turned off, and does not save places when device Location is off. Check the Timeline setting on the account that your phone actually uses, then delete existing Timeline data if you do not want the historical record retained.

Timeline retention is different from an app calculating your current position. An app can request a live location without creating a Google Timeline history, and Timeline data can remain until you delete it even after you revoke an app’s permission.

iPhone Significant Locations versus current access

On iPhone, disabling Significant Locations & Routes and clearing its history addresses stored personalization data. It does not automatically change every app’s permission, so complete the per-app review separately.

What each setting changes

Control Scope What it changes Likely trade-off
App permission One app Whether that app can request location and when The app may lose maps, nearby results, delivery status, or automations
Precise Location / Use precise location One app Pinpoint versus approximate location Navigation, geofencing, or fraud checks may be less accurate
Always / Allow all the time One app Background access when the app is not open Continuous features work, but the app can receive location outside active use
Location Services / Use location Device-wide Ordinary app access to current location Maps, lost-device, local-result, time-zone, and safety features can degrade
Location Accuracy Android device Use of wireless signals and sensors to improve calculations Lower accuracy, especially indoors or in dense areas
Wi-Fi or Bluetooth scanning Android location inputs Nearby-signal assistance for positioning Indoor positioning and nearby-device discovery can be weaker
Significant Locations & Routes / Timeline Stored history Whether travel or frequently visited places are retained Personalized history, route recall, and some convenience features may disappear

A practical privacy audit for each phone

iPhone sequence

  1. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
  2. Set apps that do not need location to Never.
  3. Change occasional-use apps to Ask Next Time Or When I Share or While Using the App.
  4. Open each remaining app and switch Precise Location off where an approximate area works.
  5. Check for unnecessary Always permissions.
  6. Open System Services, review location-based suggestions, ads, analytics, and related services.
  7. Turn off Significant Locations & Routes and use Clear History if you do not want that record.

Android sequence

  1. Open Settings > Location > App location permissions.
  2. Set most apps to Allow only while in use, Ask every time, or Don’t allow.
  3. Remove Allow all the time unless continuous background updates are necessary.
  4. Switch Use precise location off for apps that only need an area.
  5. Review Location Accuracy, then decide whether its extra wireless and sensor inputs are worth the accuracy improvement.
  6. Under Location Services, turn off Wi-Fi scanning and Bluetooth scanning if you accept weaker nearby-signal positioning.
  7. In Google Account Activity controls, review Timeline and delete saved data when appropriate.

Common problems after tightening permissions

Maps shows a broad area or cannot navigate

Turn Precise Location or Use precise location back on for the maps app, and on Android check Location Accuracy. Navigation needs repeated, high-quality fixes that approximate permissions or disabled signal sources may not provide.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A delivery, ride, or safety app stops updating in the background

Check whether its permission changed from Always or Allow all the time to While Using. Restore background access only for the duration and service that require it, then remove it again when the use case ends.

Nearby recommendations become less relevant

Approximate location can be too coarse for a small-radius feature. Re-enable precise access while using the app, or grant a one-time/ask permission and deny future requests when you finish.

Find-device features cannot locate the phone

Review the device-wide Location Services or Use location switch, the lost-device service’s app permission, and Android Location Accuracy. Disabling any of these can reduce the quality or availability of a lost-device location.

Emergency exceptions and safety trade-offs

Turning off ordinary location access does not eliminate every emergency pathway. Apple and Google document that emergency services or a carrier may still transmit location when you call or text an emergency number. This exception exists so responders can locate a person in an emergency; it is not ordinary app access.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Before using a device-wide switch, consider whether you rely on emergency location, crash detection, roadside assistance, family safety, or lost-device recovery. A per-app permission and approximate location usually reduce routine exposure with less disruption than disabling all location services.

How often to revisit these settings

  • Review permissions after installing a new app or an operating-system update.
  • Check for apps that changed from foreground-only access to background access.
  • Revisit precise-location choices when an app adds a feature that genuinely needs accuracy.
  • Clear stored Significant Locations or Timeline data on the schedule that matches your privacy expectations.
  • Read an app’s current location-data disclosure when Android flags a change in sharing practices.
