Privacy-Friendly Alternatives to Apps That Require Unnecessary Permissions

The safest way to replace an over-permissioned app is to start with privacy-focused discovery channels, then verify each candidate yourself. On Android, F-Droid offers free and open-source software whose source code can be inspected, while App Fair presents a cross-platform catalog that says its apps contain no trackers, no spyware and no unnecessary permissions. On either platform, compare the permissions requested with the app’s core job, determine whether data stays on the device, read the developer’s collection and sharing disclosures, and check maintenance history before switching.

Apple’s permission controls and App Tracking Transparency, together with Google Play’s Data safety section, are useful screening tools. Neither replaces checking the app’s current behavior and policy. A privacy label, an alternative store listing or an open-source badge is a starting point—not proof that every implementation detail is safe.

What makes a permission unnecessary?

A permission is excessive when the app asks for access that is not reasonably connected to its primary function, or when it requests broad access where a narrower option would work. A calculator that wants your contacts, for example, needs a clear explanation before you grant access. A navigation app requesting location is different: location is central to the task, but you should still ask whether it can use approximate or “while using the app” access instead of continuous background tracking.

Permission status and data handling are separate questions. An app may request a legitimate permission and process the resulting information only on your phone. Another app may request the same permission and upload the data to a server, share it with service providers or use it for advertising. Evaluate both the access prompt and what happens after access is granted.

  • Processing location: Is the information handled on-device, or transmitted to a remote service?
  • Retention and sharing: Does the policy explain how long data is kept and who receives it?
  • Change over time: Could an update add a new permission or alter collection practices?

A 2025 Android analysis, A Comprehensive Analysis of Evolving Permission Usage in Android Apps, reports substantial differences in permission-request patterns and continuing examples of permission abuse. That is why an app’s current prompt and policy deserve attention even when the app is popular or highly rated.

Where to find lower-permission alternatives

F-Droid for open-source Android apps

F-Droid describes itself as a community repository for free and open-source Android applications. Its listings expose source code that others can inspect, build and improve, and an account is not required to download apps. This makes it useful when you want to see how an app is developed rather than relying only on a store description.

Use F-Droid to discover candidates by category, then open the app’s page and inspect its permissions, version history and source repository. Source availability improves transparency, but it does not guarantee that an app is well maintained or free of every privacy risk. Check when the last release was made, whether issues are being addressed and whether the app still supports your Android version.

App Fair for iPhone and Android discovery

App Fair states that its catalog contains no trackers, no spyware and no unnecessary permissions. It distributes through Apple and Google stores as well as alternative marketplaces. Those are the project’s stated policies, so use the catalog as a discovery filter and verify the individual app’s current store listing, permission prompts and privacy policy before installation.

Curated privacy directories

The Freedom-apps-privacy directory can help you find candidates in familiar categories. Its examples include Tor Browser, Firefox Focus, Proton Calendar, Tuta Calendar and Nextcloud Calendar. Treat directory entries as leads rather than permanent endorsements: confirm current platform support, developer activity, update cadence and feature coverage for your specific device.

Official stores as a second screening layer

Google Play’s Data safety section is completed by developers and describes collection and sharing across app versions. Google’s own example distinguishes location processed only on-device from location sent to a server; in that example, only the latter is treated as collected. Because the information is supplied by the developer, compare it with the permission prompt and the app’s policy instead of treating it as an independent audit.

On Apple devices, App Review Guideline 5.1.1(iv) says: “Apps must respect the user’s permission settings and not attempt to manipulate, trick, or force people to consent to unnecessary data access.” Apple also requires permission before tracking activity across other companies’ apps and websites on iOS and iPadOS 14.5 or later. These rules limit certain behavior, but you should still review each app’s controls and disclosures.

A five-axis test for any replacement app

Score each candidate against the same questions. This prevents a “privacy” label from overshadowing compatibility problems or an abandoned codebase.

Axis Questions to ask Evidence to check Warning signs
Permission fit Are every requested access and background capability needed for the core task? Store permission list, in-app prompts and operating-system permission manager Contacts, microphone, location or broad files access with no feature that needs it
Collection and sharing What data leaves the device, why, and with which parties? Privacy policy, Data safety section and network-related explanations Vague language, unexplained advertising partners or collection that exceeds the feature
Openness Can someone inspect the source and build process? Public source repository, license and documented release process “Open source” branding without an accessible repository or current code
Compatibility Does it support your operating system, devices, file formats and required integrations? Release notes, supported-version statement and your own test with non-sensitive data Missing platform support, broken imports or no alternative export path
Maintenance and support Will security and operating-system changes be addressed? Recent releases, resolved issues, contact method and update history Long periods without updates, unanswered reports or unclear ownership

Use the weakest axis as a veto when the app handles sensitive information. An app that requests few permissions but has not been updated for years may be a poor choice; an actively maintained app with broad, unexplained collection may also fail the test.

How to replace an Android app safely

  1. Define the minimum task. Write down the one job you need: editing a document, viewing a calendar, scanning a code or playing local media. Separate essential features from integrations you rarely use.
  2. Search F-Droid or App Fair first. Read the description, source link, license and release history. If you use a curated directory, follow its entry to the project’s current listing rather than installing an old package from an unknown mirror.
  3. Record the requested permissions before installation. Compare them with the task. A document viewer may need access to a selected file, not continuous access to all storage. A weather app may need location for local forecasts, but it should explain why background access is required.
  4. Check Google Play’s Data safety information when a Play listing exists. Note whether data is collected, shared, encrypted in transit and eligible for deletion. Remember that these statements come from the developer and can change between versions.
  5. Install without granting everything immediately. On Android, open Settings > Privacy > Permission manager to review categories, or open Settings > Apps > [app name] > Permissions for one app. Choose “Don’t allow,” “Ask every time,” “While using the app” or approximate location where available.
  6. Exercise the core feature with test data. Try importing, exporting, sharing and offline use before moving your complete library. Watch for prompts that appear outside the feature that supposedly needs access.
  7. Recheck after updates. Android can add or reset permissions after an update, and a new feature may introduce collection that was not present when you installed the app. Review the listing and permission manager periodically.

When denying a permission breaks a feature

First, identify the exact operation that failed. If a photo editor cannot open a picture, grant access only to the selected photo or use Android’s system picker when offered. If a map cannot provide directions, test “while using the app” and approximate location before allowing background access. If the app refuses to run until you grant an unrelated permission, look for another candidate rather than accepting a forced request.

For a feature that works only online, compare its value with the data it sends. An offline-capable alternative may have fewer integrations or a less polished interface, but it avoids making a remote account or continuous connection part of the task.

How to evaluate alternatives on iPhone and iPad

  1. Start with the App Fair catalog or the App Store. Check the app’s current privacy details, supported iOS or iPadOS version and update history. A listing can change after installation, so do not treat the first review as permanent evidence.
  2. Separate tracking consent from ordinary permissions. On iOS and iPadOS 14.5 or later, cross-company tracking requires user permission. Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking to review the global setting and individual app choices.
  3. Audit access by category. Use Settings > Privacy & Security, then select Contacts, Location Services, Microphone, Photos, Bluetooth or another category. Disable access that is not needed, choose limited photos or approximate location where offered, and set location to “While Using the App” when continuous access is unnecessary.
  4. Test without optional integrations. Turn off contact syncing, cloud connection or background refresh temporarily and confirm that the basic task still works. Re-enable only the integration that provides a clear benefit.
  5. Watch for coercive prompts. Apple’s guideline prohibits manipulating or forcing consent to unnecessary data access. A prompt that blocks an unrelated feature is a reason to question the app’s design and consider a replacement.

iOS generally limits some forms of access more tightly than Android, but the operating system cannot explain every server-side use of data. Read the developer’s policy and the App Store privacy information alongside the settings on your device.

Better substitutes for common high-risk permissions

If an app wants… Prefer an alternative that… Questions before switching
Contacts Lets you enter recipients manually, import a selected contact or share through the operating system’s picker Does the feature genuinely need your address book, and is contact data uploaded?
Continuous location Uses approximate or foreground-only location and supports manual location entry Does background location add a necessary function, or only convenience and profiling?
Microphone Activates recording only during an explicit action and shows a clear indicator Can you complete the task with typed input or an on-device speech option?
Camera Opens the camera only when scanning or taking a picture, with an option to select an existing image Is camera access required outside capture or scanning?
All photos or files Uses a system picker or grants access to selected items Can you limit the library to the files needed for this one task?
Calendar or reminders Supports manual entry, local-only storage or an explicit one-calendar choice Will event details be synchronized to a third-party server?

These patterns do not make an app automatically trustworthy. They show what least-privilege design looks like: the app receives the smallest amount of information needed, for the shortest time, with a visible reason.

Open source, tracker-free claims and their limits

Open source lets people inspect code, reproduce builds or submit fixes, but inspection is not the same as a completed security audit. A project can have a public repository and still contain defects, optional network features or dependencies that deserve review. Look for recent commits or releases, a documented issue process and a clear way to report a vulnerability.

Likewise, App Fair’s “no trackers, no spyware and no unnecessary permissions” description is a project policy claim. Confirm that the current version you install matches the catalog entry and review its permissions after installation. F-Droid’s source visibility is valuable evidence, but you should still check the app’s maintenance and behavior.

Privacy improvements can involve trade-offs. A replacement may lack proprietary integrations, desktop synchronization, polished onboarding, a large support team or the exact file format used by your old app. Record those costs before migrating, and keep an export of your data so that you can change apps again without being locked in.

A practical migration checklist

  • Export data from the old app in an open or widely supported format.
  • List the permissions and integrations you actually use today.
  • Choose a candidate with a narrower permission set and a credible update history.
  • Install it on one device or with a small test library first.
  • Verify offline behavior, import and export, notifications and sharing.
  • Review Android Permission manager or iOS Privacy & Security settings after setup.
  • Remove the old app’s permissions before uninstalling, then delete its account or cloud data if the service provides that option.
  • Reassess after major updates, operating-system upgrades or a change in the app’s privacy policy.

Choosing when no perfect alternative exists

Sometimes every candidate has a drawback. Use a weighted decision rather than a vague privacy score: treat permission fit and data sharing as mandatory requirements, then rank openness, compatibility and maintenance for your situation. If an app handles health, financial, location or workplace information, reject unexplained collection even when the interface is excellent. For a low-risk offline utility, you may accept a less active project if it performs locally and requests almost nothing.

The right replacement is therefore not the app with the smallest number of permissions in absolute terms. It is the one whose access is proportionate to its job, whose data practices are understandable, whose code or policies can be examined, and whose maintenance gives you a realistic path to receive fixes. Recheck that decision whenever the app, operating system or privacy policy changes.
