Privacy-focused browser alternatives to Chrome compared: Brave, Firefox, and Ungoogled Chromium

Short answer: choose Brave if you want substantial tracker and ad blocking with little configuration; choose Firefox if you want a non-Chromium engine with adjustable, documented tracking protection; choose Ungoogled Chromium if retaining a Chromium-style browser while removing Google web-service integration matters most and you are willing to manage more of the setup yourself.

None is an established, measured “most private” winner. Browser privacy is a collection of separate controls—tracker blocking, cookie partitioning, fingerprinting defenses, Google-service connections, Safe Browsing lookups, synchronization, and optional features. The right choice depends on which of those you value, how much site breakage you will tolerate, and whether you want a managed default or a project that expects manual configuration.

At a glance: which browser fits your priority?

Priority Best starting point What you get Main limitation
Built-in blocking with little setup Brave Shields are built in and enabled by default, with blocking for trackers, cross-site cookies, fingerprinting and related unwanted content. Stronger blocking can interfere with site features; optional services and platform-specific network behavior need review.
Non-Chromium engine with adjustable protection Firefox Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) is enabled by default, with Standard, Strict and Custom modes plus Total Cookie Protection. Strict settings can break embedded content and other site functions.
Chromium experience without Google web-service integration Ungoogled Chromium The project removes Google-specific web-service code and background requests while trying to stay close to Chromium. Some control and transparency changes require manual activation; you must understand the build and update path you choose.
A proven overall privacy or speed winner No supported winner The available documentation describes designs and features. It does not provide a current, independent, controlled comparison of all three browsers.

Brave and Ungoogled Chromium are Chromium-based; Firefox uses Mozilla’s engine and ETP model. A shared engine does not make two browsers equivalent: each project changes defaults, services and privacy controls differently.

What “privacy” means in this comparison

Leaving Chrome can address several different concerns, and they should not be treated as one score.

Tracker and ad blocking

A browser may stop known tracking scripts, social-media trackers, tracking pixels, cryptominers, and unwanted advertising resources. Blocking improves privacy, but it can also remove code that a site uses for login, video, comments, payments or other functions.

Cookie and browser-state partitioning

Partitioning limits the ability of a third party to reuse a cookie or other stored state across unrelated sites. Brave documents expanded state partitioning, while Firefox’s Total Cookie Protection confines each cookie to the site where it was created.

Fingerprinting and URL tracking

Fingerprinting defenses try to reduce the identifying information exposed by browser and device characteristics. Removing tracking parameters from URLs and reducing referrer detail can prevent links from carrying unnecessary campaign or cross-site identifiers. These controls do not make a browser anonymous.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google-service integration

Chromium is the open-source browser project on which several browsers are based; Google’s consumer browser also connects to Google services. Ungoogled Chromium’s stated scope is removing integration with Google web services, not automatically enabling every possible privacy hardening measure.

Safety checks, sync and optional services

Malware and phishing checks can involve network requests. Sync can move bookmarks, settings or other data between devices. Rewards, discovery tools and similar add-ons introduce their own data practices. A browser’s headline privacy features do not describe every request made by every optional service.

Brave: the lowest-effort route to aggressive built-in blocking

Brave describes its browser as based on open-source Chromium, with Brave changes applied as Chromium is updated. Its documented privacy features center on Shields, which are enabled by default and designed to block trackers, cross-site cookie tracking, fingerprinting and related unwanted content. This gives a new installation meaningful protection without requiring a long extension list.

What Brave adds at the browser level

  • Shields: built-in controls for blocking trackers and unwanted content, with adjustable behavior when a site needs an exception.
  • State partitioning: separation of browser state intended to limit cross-site tracking.
  • Referrer reduction: less information about the page you came from is sent to another site.
  • Tracking-parameter filtering: known tracking parameters can be removed from URLs.
  • Bounce-tracking protections: protections aimed at tracking schemes that redirect you through an intermediary site.
  • Encrypted sync: Brave says synchronized data is stored encrypted and that the decryption key remains on users’ devices.

These are descriptions of Brave’s implementation, not independent measurements of blocking effectiveness. A site that depends on a tracker or embedded third-party component may need a per-site adjustment, and changing a Shields setting changes the protection trade-off for that site.

Brave’s browsing-history statement and its qualifications

Brave’s browser privacy policy, last updated September 23, 2026, states: “Our company does not collect or retain a user’s browsing history.” Read that sentence alongside the policy’s feature-specific disclosures. Safe Browsing, sync and optional products such as Rewards and the Web Discovery Project have their own processing and data practices.

Safe Browsing is platform-dependent

Brave documents different Safe Browsing request paths by platform. On desktop, requests are proxied so that Google does not receive the user’s IP address directly. Android and iOS use platform paths with different service and IP-visibility implications. Therefore, the privacy description for a desktop installation cannot automatically be applied to a phone or tablet.

Who should start with Brave?

  • People who want strong defaults without assembling extensions.
  • Users who prefer Chromium compatibility and are comfortable making an exception when a site breaks.
  • Readers willing to disable optional services they do not need after installation.

Brave is not the right answer merely because it has many features. If minimizing Google-service integration is your primary objective, or if you want Mozilla’s non-Chromium engine, another choice may fit better.

Firefox: a non-Chromium engine with three protection levels

Mozilla documents Enhanced Tracking Protection (ETP) as enabled by default in Firefox. The desktop ETP guidance defines Standard, Strict and Custom modes, so you can choose how far to move the protection-versus-compatibility dial.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standard mode

Standard mode blocks social-media trackers, cross-site tracking cookies, fingerprinters and cryptominers. Total Cookie Protection confines each cookie to the site where it was created, limiting a third party’s ability to use one cookie across unrelated sites. In Standard mode, tracking content is blocked only in Private Windows.

Strict mode

Strict mode blocks tracking content in all windows and blocks all cross-site cookies. It provides a more aggressive baseline than Standard, but Mozilla warns that trackers can be embedded in videos, login fields, forms, payment flows and comments. If a required feature fails, Firefox lets you turn protection off for that individual site rather than changing the global mode.

Custom mode

Custom settings let you select the categories you want to block. This is useful when you understand which protection is causing a compatibility problem and want to keep the other controls enabled. The exact balance is yours to maintain as sites and Firefox change.

Additional account protection

Mozilla’s Firefox comparison page documents the ability to set a primary password for saved passwords. Treat this as a credential-storage control, separate from tracker blocking or cookie partitioning.

Who should start with Firefox?

  • Readers who specifically want a non-Chromium browser engine.
  • Users who want a clear Standard-to-Strict-to-Custom progression.
  • People prepared to troubleshoot occasional breakage by using a site-specific exception.

Firefox’s default Standard mode is not the same as Strict mode. Installing Firefox and leaving every option untouched gives you the former, not the latter.

Ungoogled Chromium: removing Google integration, not outsourcing configuration

The project describes Ungoogled Chromium as “Google Chromium, sans integration with Google.” Its repository documentation says it removes remaining background requests to web services and code specific to Google web services while trying to remain close to the default Chromium experience.

What its scope means

Ungoogled Chromium addresses a particular layer of privacy: connections and code tied to Google web services. That does not by itself guarantee aggressive tracker blocking, complete cookie partitioning, hardened fingerprinting resistance or a browser with every privacy option enabled. Those are separate decisions.

Manual activation is part of the proposition

The project notes that some changes intended to increase control and transparency require manual activation or enabling. In practice, you should expect to inspect settings, choose appropriate builds and understand which features you have enabled rather than assuming that the project’s name represents a complete configuration.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Maintenance and platform qualification

The repository information reviewed here does not establish a current release cadence or a complete platform-by-platform maintenance picture. Do not infer update speed, safety or availability for a particular operating system without checking the project’s current documentation and the build source you plan to use.

Who should start with Ungoogled Chromium?

  • Readers who want Chromium’s general model while reducing Google web-service integration.
  • People comfortable selecting a build, checking settings and managing updates themselves.
  • Users who do not require a managed, one-click privacy configuration.

If you want protections to be obvious and active immediately, Brave or Firefox provides a clearer documented default path.

How the three approaches differ

Dimension Brave Firefox Ungoogled Chromium
Engine family Chromium-based, with Brave changes Mozilla’s non-Chromium engine Chromium-based project
Default protection described by the project Shields enabled by default ETP Standard enabled by default Some privacy and transparency changes require manual activation
Cookie/state approach Expanded state partitioning Total Cookie Protection in ETP Not established as a complete project-wide privacy configuration in the cited documentation
Fingerprinting and tracking controls Shields include fingerprinting defenses; URL-parameter filtering and bounce-tracking protections are documented ETP blocks fingerprinters and offers stricter modes Scope centers on removing Google web-service integration
Google web-service integration Not eliminated; feature-specific services remain Firefox’s ETP model is separate from Chromium’s Google integration Project goal is to remove Google-specific web-service code and background requests
Sync Optional; Brave says synced data is encrypted with the key on users’ devices Not compared in the cited material Not compared in the cited material
Configuration effort Low for the documented baseline; exceptions and optional-service choices remain Low for Standard; higher if tuning Strict or Custom Higher; manual activation and build/update decisions are part of use
Compatibility expectation Chromium-derived, but no comparative test result is established Stricter protection can break site features Chromium-derived, but no comparative test result is established

The table separates documented design goals from conclusions that would require testing. A Chromium base may be a practical reason to expect familiarity with Chromium-oriented sites and extensions, but it is not proof that every site or extension behaves identically.

Installation and first-day configuration checklist

Use this sequence whichever browser you choose. It avoids treating the browser’s name as a complete privacy plan.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install from the project’s current official distribution. Confirm that the build matches your operating system and check the project’s current update information, especially for Ungoogled Chromium.
  2. Record the starting protection mode. In Firefox, identify whether ETP is Standard, Strict or Custom. In Brave, review the Shields state for a normal site. In Ungoogled Chromium, inspect which project changes are active rather than assuming all are enabled.
  3. Decide whether you need synchronization. Enable sync only for the data and devices you actually want connected. For Brave, remember that sync is optional and has its own encrypted-data design.
  4. Review optional services. Brave users should examine Rewards, the Web Discovery Project and other optional features and disable those they do not need. Safety checks are a separate decision from advertising or tracker blocking.
  5. Test essential sites. Check work applications, banking, government services, email, video, payments and password-manager extensions before deleting the old profile.
  6. Use targeted exceptions. If a site fails under stricter Firefox protection or Brave Shields, first try a site-specific adjustment instead of weakening protection everywhere.
  7. Recheck after updates. Browser defaults and web compatibility change. Revisit the protection mode, optional services and critical sites after major updates.

Compatibility, breakage and the privacy dial

Privacy controls can remove third-party code that a site uses for legitimate functions. Mozilla explicitly lists videos, login fields, forms, payments and comments as possible failure points under Strict ETP. Brave’s Shields are adjustable for the same practical reason: a site may require an exception.

There is no documented breakage rate in the available material, so do not treat one browser as measurably more compatible. Instead, classify the sites you depend on:

  • Core services: verify sign-in, uploads, payments and account recovery.
  • Media and collaboration: verify video playback, microphones, screen sharing and comments.
  • Extensions: confirm that privacy, password and accessibility extensions still function.
  • Rarely used sites: leave stronger protection enabled and create an exception only when needed.

Keeping a Chromium-derived browser may be a practical compatibility preference for someone whose workflow depends on Chromium-oriented sites or extensions. That is an inference from the shared base, not a tested result, and it does not make Brave and Ungoogled Chromium interchangeable.

Network requests and optional features deserve separate scrutiny

A browser can block page trackers while still making legitimate service requests. Safe Browsing is the clearest example in this comparison: Brave documents a desktop proxy arrangement that avoids exposing the user’s IP address directly to Google, while Android and iOS use different platform paths. The relevant question is not simply “Does this browser use Safe Browsing?” but “Which device, service and request path are involved?”

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Sync creates another boundary. Moving bookmarks, settings or other browser data between devices can be convenient, but it adds a service relationship. Brave says its synced data is encrypted and the decryption key stays on users’ devices; that describes Brave’s design, not a universal property of browser sync.

Optional features should be evaluated as separate products. If you want the smallest service footprint, leave unneeded discovery, rewards or similar features disabled and read the current policy for anything you turn on.

A decision framework you can apply in five questions

  1. Do you want a non-Chromium engine? Start with Firefox. If not, continue.
  2. Do you want protections active with minimal setup? Start with Brave. If you prefer to configure each control yourself, continue.
  3. Is removing Google web-service integration your central goal? Consider Ungoogled Chromium, while accepting its manual setup and maintenance responsibilities.
  4. How much site breakage can you troubleshoot? If you need broad compatibility and quick exceptions, begin with Brave Shields or Firefox Standard rather than Firefox Strict.
  5. Will you use optional services or sync? Choose the browser whose disclosures and controls you are willing to review on every device you use.

You can change browsers later. Export bookmarks, keep a tested fallback during migration, and make the final choice based on the sites and extensions you actually use rather than on a universal privacy label.

What this comparison can—and cannot—establish

The cited documentation establishes each project’s stated design and available controls. It does not establish a current independent ranking of privacy, speed, battery use, compatibility or update safety. No controlled side-by-side benchmark covering all three browsers is established here, so claims that one is categorically “the most private,” fastest or safest would go beyond the evidence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Browser implementations change. Brave’s policy and Mozilla’s ETP documentation have dated updates, and the Ungoogled Chromium repository is a living project. Check the linked documentation again when you install, especially if publication or installation occurs long after those dates.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Brave more private than Firefox?

The available documentation does not establish an overall winner. Brave emphasizes built-in Shields and Chromium-level privacy features, while Firefox provides ETP Standard, Strict and Custom modes with Total Cookie Protection. Your preferred engine, defaults and tolerance for site exceptions determine the better fit.

Does Ungoogled Chromium block all trackers?

No such complete configuration is established by the project description. Its stated scope is removing Google web-service integration and related background requests; some control and transparency changes require manual activation, and tracker blocking is a separate setting decision.

Should I use Firefox Strict mode immediately?

Only if you can troubleshoot occasional breakage. Mozilla says Strict mode blocks tracking content in all windows and all cross-site cookies, and warns that embedded videos, login fields, forms, payments and comments can stop working. Standard mode is the default starting point.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does using a Chromium-based browser make privacy protections identical?

No. Brave and Ungoogled Chromium share a Chromium base but differ in defaults, services and privacy features. A shared engine can inform a compatibility preference, not prove identical behavior.
