If you want an AI chatbot that handles your prompts differently from the major hosted services, choose based on the specific privacy behavior you need. Proton’s Lumo makes explicit claims about deleting prompts and encrypting saved chats; ChatGPT and Gemini offer settings worth reviewing; and tools such as Ollama and LM Studio let you run models locally. These are different trade-offs, not proof that any option is universally private or secure.
First, decide what “private” needs to mean
Two promises that often get blurred are “not used for training” and “not retained.” A training opt-out addresses whether conversations are used to improve models; it does not, by itself, mean prompts are immediately deleted, inaccessible to the provider, or never reviewed by people.

For a useful comparison, look at what happens to prompts and chat history, whether saved chats can be decrypted by the provider, whether humans may review content, whether web search or other third parties are involved, and whether the service supports the features your task requires. Published policy describes what a provider says it does; it is not the same as independent technical verification.
Hosted options with different privacy controls

Proton Lumo: a hosted alternative with specific claims
Lumo may suit someone seeking a hosted assistant whose provider explicitly describes prompt deletion and protected saved history. Proton’s support page says, “Lumo doesn’t use your chats to train the AI models.” The same page qualifies that statement: a user may expressly share anonymized feedback for Apertus 1.5. Treat both the claim and its exception as Proton’s published policy, not as independently verified technical behavior.

ChatGPT: change the training setting if that is your concern
OpenAI’s documented control is relevant if your priority is preventing new chats from being used to train its models. It should not be mistaken for a promise that those chats are never stored or reviewed. Find the current setting in ChatGPT under Settings → Data Controls → Improve the model for everyone; interface labels can change, so consult OpenAI’s linked help page if the path differs.
Gemini: inspect activity and recording settings
Google’s privacy documentation makes activity settings particularly relevant for people using voice or Gemini Live. Check Gemini Apps Activity and the current explanations of audio and Live recordings before using those features with sensitive material. The setting behavior described for Gemini Apps should not be generalized into a claim about every form of Google account or service retention.

Local models: less reliance on a hosted chatbot, not automatic privacy
Ollama and LM Studio describe software for running language models locally on a user’s device: Ollama and LM Studio. Local inference can reduce the need to send prompts to a hosted chatbot, which may be useful for sensitive drafts or experimentation.

Check the software’s current behavior and settings rather than assuming a product description proves that no data ever leaves the device. Choose by the risk you need to reduce
- You want an explicit hosted-service statement about prompts and saved history: review Proton’s Lumo privacy page, including its anonymized-feedback exception.
- Your main concern is model training on ChatGPT conversations: use OpenAI’s training control, while remembering it is not a deletion or encryption setting.
- You use Gemini voice or Live features: inspect Gemini Apps Activity and recording disclosures before sharing sensitive content.
- You want prompts handled without relying on a hosted chatbot: explore local inference with Ollama or LM Studio, then verify network and device behavior.
These options cannot be ranked as though their policy pages were equivalent security audits. The official documentation cited here describes provider claims and controls; it does not establish an independent, comparative audit of all services.
