YouTube’s published ranges are starting points—not targets to push to the maximum. Test with representative audio and motion before going live, then watch YouTube’s stream-health messages during the broadcast.
Recommended PRISM settings for a standard SDR stream
Start with YouTube’s current live-encoder guidance, then choose settings your system can sustain. YouTube recommends RTMPS for ingest, CBR, a two-second keyframe interval, and no more than four seconds between keyframes. Its current guidance lists H.264, H.265/HEVC, and AV1 as supported live video codecs. YouTube’s live encoder settings
- Ingest protocol: RTMPS, when available in PRISM’s service or connection options.
- Rate control: CBR, where the encoder exposes the option.
- Keyframes: set the interval to two seconds. Do not exceed four seconds between keyframes.
- Codec: choose a codec supported by YouTube and your encoder hardware or software. Check that your chosen codec is available in PRISM on your computer.
- Resolution and FPS: select the combination that fits the program and that your computer and upload connection can maintain consistently.
- Bitrate: use the applicable YouTube recommendation below as a range, not as a guarantee of stable delivery.
What bitrate should I use for YouTube Live?
YouTube’s current recommended ranges vary by resolution, frame rate, and codec. The following are platform recommendations, not independent tests or proof that a particular computer or internet connection can sustain the settings. YouTube’s live encoder settings
| Output | H.264 recommended bitrate | AV1 or H.265 recommended bitrate |
|---|---|---|
| 1080p at 30 FPS | 5–14 Mbps | 4–10 Mbps |
| 1080p at 60 FPS | 6–17 Mbps | 4–12 Mbps |
Bitrate is only one part of the choice. Higher resolution and frame rate generally require more upload capacity, while codec choice affects the recommended bitrate. The source material and the encoder’s available codec support also matter. A high bitrate does not automatically produce a better or more stable stream: if your upload connection fluctuates or your computer cannot encode reliably, the stream can still stutter or drop frames.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Choose a reliable point within the range
Do not default to the top of a range. YouTube advises choosing a quality level that the connection can reliably support and recommends running a speed test. Leave headroom for normal variation in your upload connection rather than planning around its best moment. YouTube’s live encoder settings
H.264 versus AV1 or H.265
The published 1080p recommendations for AV1 and H.265 are lower than the H.264 ranges in the table. That does not mean either codec is automatically the right choice: PRISM must offer it for your selected service, and your system must be able to encode it. If codec availability or compatibility is uncertain, use an option that PRISM and YouTube support in your setup and verify it in a preflight test.

Connect PRISM to the intended YouTube stream
PRISM’s interface can vary by app version and operating system, so follow the current in-app connection flow rather than relying on an exact menu label that may have changed. Begin with the YouTube channel you intend to broadcast from, and make sure the selected event in YouTube Studio is the one you want PRISM to send to.
- Connect the channel: in PRISM Live Studio, use its current YouTube sign-in or account-connection flow and authorize the intended channel.
- Select the stream: in YouTube Studio, create or select the planned live stream, then follow PRISM’s current flow for choosing or connecting to that stream.
- Configure output: in PRISM’s encoder or output settings, select RTMPS if offered, choose a supported codec, set CBR where available, and set the keyframe interval to two seconds.
- Set the video output: choose the planned resolution and FPS, then select a bitrate within YouTube’s recommended range for that codec and output.
- Check the destination: before starting the public broadcast, verify that PRISM is connected to the intended channel and event in YouTube Studio.
Test before the broadcast and monitor stream health
A settings panel cannot tell you whether your actual connection and computer will hold up during a real program. YouTube recommends a speed test and testing before the stream starts. Use a preflight run that resembles the planned broadcast, including representative movement, scene changes, and audio, rather than testing only a static screen. During the event, monitor YouTube’s stream-health messages for delivery problems. YouTube’s live encoder settings

- Test at the intended resolution, FPS, codec, and bitrate.
- Include the kind of motion and audio your audience will actually see and hear.
- Check the stream in YouTube Studio before the scheduled start, and confirm the preview and stream-health status.
- If health warnings appear, reduce the output load and test again rather than assuming the highest available bitrate is best.
Why is my PRISM stream stuttering?
Stuttering can come from an upload connection that cannot consistently sustain the output, a computer or encoder under load, or settings that are too demanding for the setup. PRISM’s desktop performance guidance is to lower broadcast resolution, bitrate, and FPS. If the computer has a dedicated graphics card, PRISM recommends choosing its hardware encoder option; the option’s name can differ by GPU manufacturer. PRISM Live Studio desktop guide
Reduce load in a controlled order
- Lower the bitrate and run another representative test.
- If instability remains, reduce resolution or FPS, then test again.
- If a dedicated GPU is installed, try the hardware encoder option in PRISM and verify the result with another test.
- Check YouTube stream health during the test so you can distinguish delivery warnings from a preview that merely looks different on your local screen.
Changing one or two output demands at a time makes it easier to see which adjustment helps. An Ethernet connection to the router can be a useful setup option if your computer supports it, but it is not required and cannot guarantee stability or fix an inadequate ISP connection, an overloaded computer, or incorrect encoder settings.

Should you use PRISM adaptive bitrate?
PRISM describes adaptive bitrate as real-time analysis of network conditions that adjusts bitrate and FPS. It can help respond to changing conditions, but it is not a substitute for adequate upload capacity or a preflight test: PRISM warns that network capacity that is too low can still result in poor viewer quality. PRISM Live Studio desktop guide
Fixed output settings make it easier to keep a known resolution, FPS, and bitrate throughout the program. Adaptive bitrate can adjust bitrate and FPS as conditions change. Choose based on your need for consistent output versus automatic adjustment, and test the selected mode before a scheduled broadcast.

PRISM’s separate YouTube HDR workflow
Use this path only when producing HDR with compatible content and a compatible workflow. It is not a general stability preset and should not be applied to a standard SDR stream. PRISM documents YouTube-HLS, Advanced output mode, H.265/HEVC at 10,000 Kbps, and its specified HDR color format, color space, and range for YouTube HDR streaming. PRISM Live Studio desktop guide
YouTube’s broader ingest guidance also identifies H.265 for HDR and says AV1 is not supported for HDR in its listed workflow. Follow PRISM’s HDR-specific color settings for this path rather than substituting ordinary SDR settings. YouTube’s live encoder settings
Or let it run in the cloud
If the goal is to keep a pre-recorded YouTube stream running 24/7, PRISM on a desktop is a do-it-yourself option that depends on that computer and its connection remaining available. StreamNeo is a cloud service for looping uploaded videos on YouTube: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. The cloud keeps the stream running without a home computer left on, and it automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. Each slot streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, with no re-encoding or quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. See StreamNeo for details.
StreamNeo is for uploaded video playback, not a live camera feed. Start with the copyright safety checklist and make sure you have the rights to stream your content. Try StreamNeo’s free first day.
