A team at South Korea’s Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST) used a commercial desktop inkjet printer to fabricate a flexible, solid-state supercapacitor directly on ordinary A4 paper. The patterned device powered LEDs and a temperature-sensing demonstration.
It was not a conventional battery, a drop-in product for home printers, or evidence that consumers can reproduce the result with standard cartridges. The 2016 demonstration showed that paper, printed functional inks and a cured electrolyte can be combined into a small energy-storage component.

What “printed power source” means in this case
The device behind the headline was an all-inkjet-printed, solid-state flexible supercapacitor on paper. That wording matters. A supercapacitor stores electrical energy differently from a conventional battery and is valued mainly for rapid charge and discharge, high power delivery and mechanical form-factor options. The paper device was a laboratory component, not a finished battery pack.

Keun-Ho Choi, JongTae Yoo, Chang Kee Lee and Sang-Young Lee reported the work in the paper All-inkjet-printed, solid-state flexible supercapacitors on paper in Energy & Environmental Science. UNIST described the project in a June 28, 2016 institutional announcement, while Chemistry World covered the result in its August 3, 2016 article “A picture perfect power source.”

The team’s central achievement was manufacturing the functional layers with inkjet deposition on conventional A4 sheets, then retaining enough electrochemical activity for a flexible energy-storage device. The printer produced designed shapes rather than only rectangular laboratory coupons, which is why the work attracted attention from printed-electronics researchers.
How the paper supercapacitor was constructed
The reported design used several printable materials, each serving a different electrical or structural role. The published descriptions identify the following elements:
- Black carbon nanofiber layers: conductive, high-surface-area electrode material in the reported electrode structure.
- Activated carbon: another electrode material used to provide the surface on which charge is stored.
- Silver nanowire inks: printed conductive paths and current-collecting elements.
- A clear electrolyte: deposited between electrode pairs so ions could move while the cell operated.
- Ultraviolet curing: the liquid electrolyte formulation was cured into a solid state with UV light, making the finished component more suitable for a flexible sheet.
These are construction details of the studied device, not a consumer recipe. The reports do not provide a complete home-fabrication protocol with cartridge specifications, droplet volumes, print-head settings, layer thicknesses, curing times or an approved list of substitute materials. Inkjet printing is sensitive to viscosity, surface tension, wetting, registration and curing, so buying a generic printer and conductive ink would not establish that the same performance can be achieved.

What the reported fabrication workflow did
At a high level, the process can be understood as a sequence of patterning and solidification steps. The sources describe the result and its materials rather than a reproducible consumer procedure, so the outline below explains the architecture without implying an exact laboratory protocol.

- Define the electrical pattern. The printer can place electrode and conductor regions in letters, map-like artwork or other planned geometries instead of being limited to a standard cell outline.
- Print the conductive and electrode layers. Silver nanowire and carbon-based inks form the current paths and charge-storing surfaces on the paper.
- Place the electrolyte between electrode pairs. The clear liquid formulation is printed where ionic conduction is needed, separating the opposing electrodes.
- Cure the electrolyte with ultraviolet light. The liquid becomes a solid electrolyte, producing the solid-state form described in the paper.
- Build the required cell arrangement. Individual printed cells can be wired in series or in parallel. Series connection raises the available voltage; parallel connection increases the combined capacitance and current capability for a given design.
- Connect the printed component to a load. The demonstrations attached the paper supercapacitors to LEDs and to electronics in a temperature-sensing cup.
Because the source material does not state every deposition condition, this sequence should be read as an explanation of the reported design logic rather than instructions for operating a printer.
Why the shapes could be letters, maps or custom patterns
Inkjet deposition is digital: a pattern can be changed in software without manufacturing a new metal mask or cutting a rigid circuit board. UNIST reported that the cells could be printed as designed letters or other patterns and then combined electrically. The institution also showed a map-shaped printed supercapacitor powering LEDs.
Patterning affects more than appearance. The printed geometry determines electrode area, the length of conductive paths and how several cells can be connected. A designer could therefore tailor the outline to a surface, reserve blank paper for other components or place several cells wherever a flexible object has room. The announcement describes this as user-customized voltage and capacitance through series and parallel connections; it does not give a universal equation or a single set of values that applies to every pattern.

LED illumination
The team connected printed supercapacitors to light-emitting diodes. This is a proof that the device could deliver useful electrical output to a simple load, not a claim that a sheet of paper could run household lighting or a phone. LED demonstrations are common in early energy-storage work because they make charging and discharging visible without requiring a large or complex system.

A temperature-sensing cup
The more integrated demonstration combined printed supercapacitors with an LED and a temperature sensor in a cup designed to sense temperature. The cup showed how a printed energy store might sit beside a sensor and indicator in an object whose shape is not a conventional electronics enclosure. The result was a prototype integration, not a packaged commercial sensor platform.
What the 2,000-cycle result tells you
UNIST’s 2016 account says the devices maintained reliable electrochemical performance over 2,000 cycles and remained mechanically flexible. That is the clearest numerical performance figure attached to this demonstration. It should be read as a reported laboratory result under the team’s test conditions, not as a guaranteed service life for a product.
| Reported point | What it supports | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 2,000 cycles | The institutional account reports repeatable electrochemical operation through that number of charge/discharge cycles. | It is not a warranty, a calendar-life estimate or a claim that every printed cell will reach 2,000 cycles in use. The announcement does not specify a consumer duty cycle or operating environment. |
| Mechanical flexibility | The component could bend as part of a paper-based form factor. | It does not state a bend radius, number of bends, folding procedure or durability under continuous flexing. |
| LED and sensor integrations | The device delivered enough output for the reported proof-of-concept loads. | No capacity, energy-density, voltage, current or run-time specification for those demonstrations is provided in the cited accounts. |
| A4 paper substrate | The work used familiar sheet material rather than a specialized rigid package. | It does not show that office paper, any printer or any ink combination will produce equivalent cells. |
Supercapacitor versus conventional battery
A battery and a supercapacitor can both power electronics, but they solve different engineering problems. The following comparison combines the broad context given by Chemistry World with what was and was not measured for the paper device.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Comparison axis | Printed paper supercapacitor | Conventional battery |
|---|---|---|
| Storage mechanism | Electrochemical charge storage at high-surface-area electrodes with an electrolyte; the reported cell is solid-state and flexible. | Electrochemical reactions in a battery cell; construction and chemistry vary widely. |
| Charge and discharge speed | Supercapacitors are generally discussed as charging and discharging faster than batteries. A speed value for this specific paper cell is not stated. | Usually optimized for storing energy over a longer period rather than accepting the very highest power pulses; exact behavior depends on chemistry and design. |
| Energy per mass | Chemistry World gives a broad, general comparison of supercapacitors’ energy-per-mass behavior; no energy-density figure is reported for this prototype. | Battery energy density is not measured or compared numerically in the cited account. |
| Size and form factor | The demonstrated device is thin, patterned and flexible on paper. | Many commercial batteries are rigid or packaged, although flexible and thin battery formats also exist. |
| Fabrication | Functional layers were deposited by an all-inkjet process and UV-cured into a solid-state component. | Established battery manufacturing normally uses dedicated electrode coating, assembly and packaging processes. |
| Demonstrated use here | LEDs and a temperature-sensing cup prototype. | No battery product was tested in the cited demonstrations. |
The same Chemistry World context notes that supercapacitors can be larger than other portable power sources. That observation is general, not a dimensional specification of the A4-paper design. A practical engineer would choose between a battery, a supercapacitor or a hybrid system after measuring required energy, peak current, recharge time, thickness, flexibility and safety.

Why printing on paper mattered to the researchers
The attraction was not simply making an unusual shape. Inkjet printing can place material only where a digital pattern calls for it, which may reduce tooling and make customization easier than with fixed masks. A paper substrate is light, inexpensive and naturally flexible, and a solid electrolyte avoids the free-flowing liquid found in some conventional cells.
Professor Sang-Young Lee, as quoted by UNIST, said:
“Due to the simplicity/scalability of its process and design universality, the inkjet-printed SCs presented herein hold substantial promise as a new class of monolithically-integrated flexible power sources that are urgently needed for the forthcoming IoT and flexible/wearable electronics.”

Possible applications—and the boundary between potential and proof
UNIST and the article discuss relevance to the Internet of Things, wearable electronics and smart objects. In those categories, a power source could be patterned around a surface, combined with a printed sensor or placed where a rigid battery is inconvenient. The temperature-sensing cup illustrates that kind of integration at prototype scale.
However, the demonstrations do not establish operation in a deployed sensor network, washable clothing, medical device, outdoor installation or mass-produced package. Those uses would require additional evidence on energy capacity, environmental sealing, humidity, mechanical fatigue, charging circuitry, electrical safety, shelf life and manufacturing yield. None of those product-level specifications is supplied for this 2016 device.
Can an ordinary printer reproduce it?
Not on the evidence available. The report says a commercial desktop inkjet printer was used, but that does not mean an unmodified office printer can safely handle the same formulations or align every functional layer. The device depends on purpose-made carbon, silver-nanowire and electrolyte inks, controlled deposition and ultraviolet curing. Paper absorbency and surface treatment also affect whether a printed line remains conductive and whether adjacent layers stay separated.

Therefore, “printed on paper” should not be interpreted as “printable with ordinary ink cartridges.”
Commercial status and how to interpret the date
The underlying article and UNIST announcement are from 2016. They describe a research prototype and its demonstrations; they do not identify a retail model, accessory, replacement part or consumer-ready manufacturing service. The available accounts also do not establish a current commercialization or licensing status. A headline about a paper power source should therefore be read as a report of what the team demonstrated at that time, not as evidence that the same device is sold today.
There is no verified market-size statistic or current commercial-performance number attached to this specific technology in the cited material. Claims that it has become a mainstream replacement for batteries would require later product and field data that are not provided here.
A checklist for evaluating similar “printed battery” claims
- Identify the storage technology. Confirm whether the device is a battery, supercapacitor, fuel cell or another component; the name determines what performance trade-offs are relevant.
- Separate the substrate from the active device. Paper may be the support, while the electrodes, conductors and electrolyte provide the actual electrical function.
- Look for measured numbers. Capacity, energy, voltage, current, energy density, cycle conditions and run-time are more informative than a photograph of an LED.
- Check the test conditions. A cycle count needs its charge rate, discharge rate, voltage window, temperature and failure criterion to be meaningful.
- Ask whether the pattern is electrically functional. Decorative printing and a connected, characterized cell are not the same thing.
- Distinguish a laboratory printer from a consumer workflow. A desktop machine in a university experiment may still require specialized inks, curing and calibration.
- Verify the date and availability. A prototype announcement does not prove that a product, process or license exists years later.
The UNIST demonstration is important precisely because it answered a narrow question: can a flexible energy-storage device be formed by printing functional layers onto paper? It showed that the answer can be yes under laboratory conditions, while leaving the harder questions of energy density, durability, manufacturing scale and commercial availability open.
