Princeton’s Undergraduate Student Government (USG) Senate unanimously adopted two separate statements on September 27, 2026: one urged Princeton University to change its Title IX and sexual-misconduct policies in response to allegations involving a former Cornell student, and the other urged New Jersey regulators to deny an air permit for a data center under construction in South Brunswick.
What each statement asked for
| Statement | Institution addressed | Requested action | Concern cited |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cornell case and campus policy | Princeton University | Publicly express solidarity with Jane Doe; revise Title IX and sexual-misconduct policies, reform alternate resolution, and improve access to information about support resources. The Senate requested a substantive response by close of business October 8, 2026. | The Senate argued that Princeton’s processes can discourage reporting and leave survivors facing an unacceptable choice between timely resolution and justice. |
| South Brunswick data center | New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP) | Deny the project’s air-permit application. | The Senate said emissions from the facility’s backup diesel generators could affect health in nearby communities, including Princeton. |
What the Cornell case statement said
The Daily Princetonian reported on October 5 that Jane Doe, a former Cornell student, alleged that several men sexually assaulted her at a fraternity party in 2024. She filed a lawsuit on September 16, 2026, against multiple former Cornell students and the university, among others. These are allegations, not a criminal verdict.

The newspaper reported that Cornell expelled two of seven accused men and imposed varying punishments on the others, citing records obtained by The New York Times. It also said the lawsuit brought renewed scrutiny to Cornell’s Title IX investigation and the local district attorney’s decision not to bring charges. The district attorney issued a statement on September 28 about what Doe’s 2024 sworn statement did and did not allege; the newspaper’s account should not be treated as a substitute for that statement.

The statement also criticized Princeton’s process, saying investigations are “long and arduous,” that the Title IX office prioritizes the University’s reputation over students’ well-being, and that alternate resolution “forces survivors into an impossible choice between timely resolution and true justice.” Those are the Senate’s assessments, not independent findings established by the newspaper’s report.
The Daily Princetonian reported that USG Treasurer Marvel Jem Roth consulted former and current heads of Princeton’s Title IX office, while U-Council Chair Isaac Barsoum met with Vice President for Campus Life W. Rochelle Calhoun. Roth said administrators answered questions and provided documents but did not review the statement’s direct language before publication.

The report also said Cornell had agreed to an independent review and that New York Governor Kathy Hochul appointed Attorney General Letitia James as special prosecutor on the Thursday before publication. These reported steps do not resolve the allegations or establish the outcome of the review or prosecution.
What is known about the South Brunswick data center
The Daily Princetonian described a facility of about 341,000 square feet planned for the former Princeton Nurseries property. It reported that the project includes 20 backup diesel generators that are regularly tested. Princeton University sold the site to a developer in 2024, and South Brunswick Township approved the project in May 2025. The newspaper said the operator had not been identified at the time of publication, citing TAPinto Princeton.

The Senate’s statement argued that generator emissions would drift over nearby communities and characterized the generators’ individual “minor source” designations as misleading when considered together. That is an advocacy claim by the Senate, not an NJDEP finding. The October 5 report did not provide the permit application, emissions modeling, or an agency determination that would establish the facility’s expected pollution levels or health effects.
The report placed the dispute within broader debates about data centers, including electricity costs, water use, and local control. It also cited an Annenberg Public Policy Center August 2026 survey finding that 61 percent of U.S. adults opposed data-center construction in their area. The newspaper’s account did not provide the survey wording, sample, or field dates, so the figure should be read as the result it reported rather than as a fully described measure of local views on this specific project.

What remains unresolved
As of the Daily Princetonian’s October 5 report, the Senate’s October 8 response deadline for Princeton was still in the future. The report does not establish whether Princeton has since responded. It also does not establish the current status of the NJDEP permit application, the facility’s operator, or any final agency decision. The two statements therefore represent requests by student government, not a resolution of either the campus-policy dispute or the permitting question.
