Princeton University’s School of Engineering and Applied Science has awarded 21 Innovation Research Grants totaling more than $3 million in 2026. The donor-funded program gives engineering faculty room to pursue high-risk ideas, including cement made from lunar materials, a new antimicrobial approach to Cronobacter foodborne illness, and methods for detecting synaptic activity in brain wiring diagrams.
What Princeton’s 2026 grants are designed to do
The Innovation Research Grants support exploratory work in technology, health and the environment. Princeton describes them as a way to test bold concepts that may later compete for larger external awards. The 2026 round is funded by Princeton alumni, parents and other donors and contains 21 awards worth more than $3 million in total.

How the moon-base construction project works
Why use lunar materials?
Transporting construction materials from Earth to the moon would be prohibitively expensive. Professor Claire White and fourth-year Ph.D. student Sophia Bergen are therefore testing whether materials already available on the lunar surface could become a cement-like building ingredient.

Basalt is common on Earth and abundant on the moon. The team is examining basalt, lunar mare simulant and minerals including anorthosite in small cement-like cubes. The objective is to determine whether these materials can be activated sufficiently to mix, harden and eventually serve as structural material. The work does not yet show that lunar dust can be turned into usable concrete at construction scale.
What the grant enables
White’s project is backed by Princeton Engineering’s Project X Fund, which supports exploratory research defined by “creativity, tinkering and risk-taking.” The seed funding lets the researchers test formulations and material behavior before seeking larger awards. White called the seed grant “the right launching place to get such research off the ground.”

- AWARD-WINNING PRODUCTS - Blue Marble, winner of the Toy Association's prestigious Toy of the Year Award, proudly develops products that foster education, imagination, and creativity, with a U.S. support team to ensure a stellar experience!
Bergen has emphasized that the same investigation may have value on Earth as well as on the moon: “If we’re going to be investing all this time and energy into thinking about both separately, we might as well think about them together.”
The Cronobacter project is pursuing an antimicrobial, not selling one
A. James Link, a professor of chemical and biological engineering, received a Tianaderrah Foundation award for “A new antimicrobial compound to prevent Cronobacter food-borne illness.” The O’Brien Family Health Research Fund also supports the work.

The announcement identifies the goal—finding a new compound that could prevent Cronobacter illness—but does not report a finished drug, laboratory efficacy percentage, clinical trial result, regulatory status or release date. The grant should therefore be understood as support for antimicrobial discovery and testing, not as evidence that a deployable treatment is available.
What the brain-mapping award is trying to measure
Christina Kim, assistant professor in the Omenn-Darling Bioengineering Institute and Princeton Neuroscience Institute; Mala Murthy, the Karol and Marnie Marcin ’96 Professor of Neuroscience; and Sebastian Seung, the Evnin Professor in Neuroscience and professor of computer science, are collaborating on “Detecting snapshots of synaptic activity in the wiring diagram of the brain.”

The project combines engineering and neuroscience to identify moments of synaptic activity within a representation of neural connections. Its wording describes a measurement and mapping objective. It does not claim that Princeton has completed a whole-brain map, produced a clinical device or established a published accuracy figure for this particular grant.

How the three projects differ
Although all three awards are exploratory, they address different bottlenecks:
- Materials: The lunar-cement team is asking whether local resources can be transformed into a construction material.
- Biological protection: The Cronobacter project is searching for a new antimicrobial compound to prevent foodborne illness.
- Measurement: The neuroscience team is developing a way to detect synaptic activity in a neural wiring diagram.
None of the announcements claims a commercial product or clinical intervention. Their immediate value is generating evidence that can justify larger research programs.
When the next Princeton Engineering grant proposals are due
Princeton Engineering’s official report says faculty proposals for the 2027 grant round are due November 30, 2026. The program page describes Innovation Research Grants of up to $230,000 for as many as two years. That is a general program limit, not the stated amount or duration of any one of the three projects highlighted here.

Researchers considering the 2027 round should confirm current eligibility rules, submission instructions and the public application route with Princeton Engineering, because the announcement does not provide those details.
What readers can reasonably expect next
The lunar team must establish whether candidate materials harden reliably and have useful properties. The Cronobacter researchers must identify and validate a compound before any clinical or public-health use could be considered. The brain project must show that its detection approach can produce informative activity snapshots in wiring diagrams. The 2026 awards provide the starting funds for those steps; they do not guarantee a moon-building material, an approved antimicrobial or a completed brain map.
