For institutional crypto investors, an exchange brokerage typically provides access to trade on a particular venue; a prime brokerage may bundle execution with multi-venue access, custody, financing and settlement. The label alone does not guarantee any specific service, custody protection or trading outcome. The meaningful comparison is between the actual contracting entities, account terms and operating workflows.
What is the difference between a crypto prime broker and an exchange?
An exchange brokerage is generally organized around trading on one exchange. A prime brokerage is a broader service arrangement that can bring together trading, access to multiple liquidity sources, custody, financing and settlement. Providers use the term differently, so treat it as a product description rather than a standardized package.

For example, Coinbase markets Prime as combining execution, financing, futures, custody and staking. Kraken describes Prime as combining trading, custody and financing. These are providers’ descriptions of their own offerings, not independent assessments of service quality or a guarantee that every feature is available to every client.

How do the models compare?
| What to compare | Exchange brokerage | Prime brokerage |
|---|---|---|
| Trading access | Typically centered on a particular exchange or venue. | May aggregate liquidity or route orders across venues; the actual access and routing depend on the provider and account. |
| Custody | Depends on the exchange account and its custody arrangements. | May include custody, but the exact custodian, account structure and asset treatment must be verified. |
| Financing | Availability and terms depend on the venue and account. | May offer financing or cross-margining, subject to eligibility and contract terms. |
| Settlement and asset movement | Follows the venue’s funding, trading and withdrawal workflow. | May coordinate settlement across services, but some products require assets to be transferred or swept before trading. |
| Protection and legal treatment | Depends on the asset, account, contracting entity and jurisdiction. | Also depends on those specifics; the prime-broker label does not itself confer a particular legal protection. |
| Cost and realized execution | Must be assessed using comparable quotes and the applicable fee schedule. | Must be assessed using comparable quotes, financing and service costs; provider claims alone do not establish an advantage. |
What do current provider examples show?
Coinbase Prime
Coinbase describes Prime as an institutional platform spanning execution, financing, futures, custody and staking. Its current product page reports 275+ tradeable assets and 90+ assets available for financing and cross-margining; those are Coinbase-reported page figures, accessed October 7, 2026, and may change. Coinbase’s own account descriptions show why the account name matters. Its Help page says Prime Custody uses Coinbase Custody Trust Company, described there as a New York-chartered trust company regulated by NYDFS. The comparison on that page marks Prime Custody and Prime Vault as qualified-custodian offerings, but Prime Trading as not qualified-custodian custody. It also says Prime Vault requires a sweep before trading, while Prime Custody permits direct trading and financing. These are Coinbase-specific product descriptions, not a rule for other providers. Kraken Prime
Kraken says Prime provides access to 20+ liquidity providers and uses smart order routing. It also describes financing against assets in custody, with collateral remaining in a Kraken custody vault. The 20+ figure is Kraken’s current provider-reported reach claim, accessed October 7, 2026; it is not an independent measure of market liquidity or proof of best execution. Availability and protections depend on client eligibility, jurisdiction and contract terms. Kraken Prime

Is crypto prime brokerage safer than keeping assets on an exchange?
There is no safe general answer based on the service label. A prime arrangement might separate execution, custody and financing across distinct entities or account types; it might also concentrate those functions with one provider. Safety depends on the relevant legal entity, how customer assets are held, who controls transfers, the account’s insolvency treatment and the rights a provider has over collateral.

In U.S. contexts, the SEC Division of Trading and Markets’ staff FAQ published May 15, 2025 discusses broker-dealer custody and capital questions. It identifies the absence of Securities Investor Protection Act (SIPA) protection for non-security crypto assets held through a broker-dealer. This is a narrowly framed warning about those assets and that context—not a statement that every crypto prime brokerage product, asset or jurisdiction has the same treatment. Do not infer that “qualified custodian,” “custody,” or a provider’s regulatory status resolves every risk. Establish which assets and account are covered, and what the operative agreement says about ownership, segregation, transfers and a provider’s failure.

How should an institution evaluate a provider?
Use the actual account and service documents—not the general product label or marketing page—to answer these questions. Record the answers for each entity and account involved.
- Identify the contracting entity and governing law. Confirm the legal entity that contracts with you, where it is regulated, and which law governs each service. Coinbase says the applicable entity depends on the product and the client’s incorporation location, so do not assume one entity covers every Coinbase service.
- Map custody and asset control. Name the custodian for each asset and account. Determine whether holdings are segregated or omnibus, who can initiate or approve transfers, and what happens to assets in insolvency. Review asset segregation and withdrawal controls in the agreement.
- Trace the trading and settlement workflow. Establish whether orders execute on one venue or are routed across venues, what order types and execution support are available, and how fills and settlement are reported. Check whether assets must be moved or swept into a trading account first.
- Test financing and collateral terms. Confirm eligible assets, credit criteria, haircuts, margin requirements, liquidation rights, collateral custody and any rehypothecation rights. A general statement that financing is offered does not establish your eligibility or the terms you will receive.
- Review oversight and operations. Confirm what reconciliation, transaction reporting, account permissions, audit evidence and operational support the actual contract provides.
- Compare cost and resilience using evidence. Assess explicit fees, spreads, financing costs and transfer costs alongside outages, provider concentration and recovery terms. Request comparable quotes and evaluate execution using a defined method rather than treating a liquidity-provider count or routing claim as proof of superior results.
What cannot be concluded from the available provider descriptions?
The cited product pages do not establish that prime brokerage has lower total cost, better realized execution or better insolvency recovery than exchange brokerage. Those conclusions require comparable pricing, executed agreements and account-specific diligence. Likewise, provider statements about aggregated liquidity, routing or financing describe capabilities or claims; they do not by themselves demonstrate the outcome for a particular institution.
